courtesy of Sonoma....Chili-Lime chicken skewers

1)  finely shredd lime peel (from 1 lime) into bowl, add 1 1/2 teaspoon of chile pepper, garlic-herb seasoning (i use mrs. dash garlic-herb) and mix together.  Rub (pour over and coat) over 1 in. cut chicken breast strips.  Thread chicken onto skewers and bbq or broil in oven (turning once) til done (10-15 min.)

2)  use pork or chicken:  sprinkle pieces with chili powder (i coat heavily) and massage it in a bit; chop up some garlic (to your taste); squeeze the juice from one or two limes;  put it all in a ziplock bag; pour a can of beer over the top and marinate for a couple hours (or while you are at work....leave it in the fridge!);  take meat out and cook it your favorite way...broil, bbq, etc.  Discard the liquid.

3)  Chicken Salad:  1 lb. cubed cooked chicken,  1 granny smith apple, cored and chopped,  3/4 c. celery chopped,  1/3 c. green onions chopped,  2 TBS parsley chopped,  2 TBS walnuts chopped;   put it all in a bowl and stir.    In another bowl:  2TBS light sour cream,  3 TBS red wine viegar,  2TBS light mayo,  1/2 tsp kosher salt,  1/8 tsp black pepper;  mix and add to chicken mixture.    Top a serving of mixture over your favorite dark green leafies!!

I've tried adding fresh baby spinach and sliced up red peppers to boost nutrient, fiber content, and I like the flavor.  It might make a good addition if you like them, and keep the calories down too.  They would pair nicely with the burgers.

The Lounge Home - is it warm from the heat or are you keeping things cool Jun 21 2009

I'm weathering the heat, but chillin in my house the old fashion way :) !!  I'm with you on the expense of AC.  Don't have it and don't want it.  I live in the northwest so our heat isn't bad yet.  That's relative also....I might feel different if I lived in a more southerly state.   I leave certain windows open with window fans on at night.  I open the house up when I get up earlier in the morning.  I close things down at a certain point and I stay comfortable throughout the heat of the day.  I have energy effecient windows (a great investment for us!! Our electric bill seldom goes over 90$ a month all year) and the insulation in our home helps keep things cool.  I learned this from my aunt and grannie who grew up in Minnesota!!  Enjoy your summer!!

Health & Support Period Question Jun 20 2009

I had very irregular periods from the beginning til far into my twenties.  I also had excessive bleeding....at the time my mom told me it was normal.  I was not underweight....your weight could be fine depending on your structure type....my daughter is 11 and weighs 72 pounds....built like her dad, very active, very healthy, and genetically slender (didn't get it from me!!).....

Anyway, it turns out my periods were not 'normal', my hormones were very off and I had a vitamin deficiency....ask your doctor to do some blood work.  It is normal to a certain extent for periods to be irregular in the beginning...you didn't mention your age...older teen?  younger teen?      &nbs p;  Also, not eating enough, or a lot of the wrong kinds of food can hurt your metabolism at any age.  Make sure that your eating style is supportive of a growing teen....you need more NOW to help you be healthy and lean now and later on in adulthood...example: calcium, vit. D for prevention of osteoporosis....you may not care now, but you will later!!  Be your own bestfriend for your future!  BTW...the damage you are asking about shouldn't be perminent....depending on the cause.    Good luck with the doctor....GREAT JOB TALKING TO YOUR MOM!

Fitness Workout to do with pilates? Jun 20 2009

I frequently add a cardio to the day I do pilates.  Pilates alone isn't enough for me, but there are other great benefits.  I use yoga and pilates to keep me limber and fluid in my movements.  The benefit of this is that my back and hip pains are reduced to nothing as long as I have some consistency of these two exercises.  I look at it like this...after building strength and endurance, pilates and yoga are the key to keeping all the muscles running like a smooth lubricated machine.  Plus I feel more graceful, elegant and beautiful...those things count in fitness too, along with strength!!  Btw....I do a routine only once, maybe twice a week....its enough for me.   Don't it after a cardio might also be a good add on to a cool down.

congradulations on getting out, getting safe, and moving on!!!  I came from an abusive family life, as well as having an abusive relationship.  I was also diagnosed PTSD.  When I was in that relationship I was also an aerobics instructor and in the best shape of my life.  So I can relate a bit.

that is well behind me these days and I'm much happier.  I am working on the last dreggs of that period in my life though....body image!!  Here is what I have to offer.  First, I affirm Mel's advice....surround yourself with healthy, positive friends.  Find what you enjoy....nature, art, dancing, planning, whatever....and enjoy it!!

OH....BTW....how long have you been out of the relationship?  I'm ten years out.

Second, be aware of your thinking patterns and decide to challege them.  Choose behaviors that support your positive, healthy body image thinking patterns.  Visualization is really helping me.  Since you have the experience of being very fit I also recommend a book titled 'The Mental Edge'.  It is a sports psychology book, but the advice can cross over to whatever your needs are.  Your athletic experience will give you something to connect it to as well.  Well that's my nugget.  I hope it wasn't to vague....open to more questions if you like.  Good luck!!  :)

Foods Garden HELP!! Jun 19 2009
06:21 (UTC)

Kaufmkk gave some great advise.  Might I add another thought to your gardening and weight loss goals.  Herbs can be a great addition to your garden, many are easy to grow, and can save money because herbs in the grocery store can be expensive.  I recommend Rosemary, Thyme, and Oregano.  These are easy plants.  Rosemary especially can be used all year around.  Bush beans (green beans)...possibly blue lakes are easier to tend to for beginners than pole beans.  Beyond that plant what you like and just enjoy it!!!  Good luck!!
