Weight Gain binge, need help! Aug 07 2009
17:09 (UTC)

Ninafish, as usual, said it better than I ever could. Great advice m'dear! <3

But I just quickly wanted to reiterate how much you are NOT ALONE in what you're going through.

When I started recovering, I used to go on these absolutely shocking two-day binges. I physically couldn't stop! I felt so disgusting, so out of control. But I realize now that these episodes were just my body literally crying out for more food. Now that I am closer to a healthy weight, I don't ever feel the urge to binge anymore.

It's part of the recovery process. The only way to handle them is to forgive yourself, and never ever restrict to compensate. Trust me- it only triggers future binges.

This is a normal part of recovery. It will pass. I promise.

Ooohhh... Tortellini please! But that was tough.

I asked this question before but got no answer:

100% all-natural peanut butter (the kind you have to stir) or skippy/jif type PB?

I'm all about the natural, myself.

Weight Gain Fat? Jul 22 2009

Hi! Not a weight gainer, but I had to pipe in! I think some of the above advice was well-meaning, but... it would be better to ignore it.

I really hope this is ok, but after reading your question I clicked on your profile for a little more info (and also to see another person who shares in my love of nut-butters!) and it seems that you're recovering from an eating disorder? Is that true?

If that's the case, then fat is exactly what your body needs, in quantities higher than any recommended limits which do NOT apply to your situation. Would it be totally presumptuous of me to guess that you don't have your period? I'm so sorry if you do, but I just know that many people who have/had anorexia struggle with amenorrhea. If I'm right, and you have any desire to regain your dreaded monthlies, than your fat content is right where it needs to be.

You also absolutely require every ounce of that fat to repair any damage done to your hair, skin, and nails. Even girls without EDs should think about upping the fat if they want those luscious locks from the pantene commercials.

Basically, I don't know you, but you're an incredibly brave person for taking the necessary steps to overcome what you've been through. My best friend had an ED at one point as well! And to answer your question- fat in food ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY does not equal fat on the body. Haha- just wanted to get that point across! A calorie is a calorie, and it's a complete myth that an increased fat content will result in a high fat body composition or something ridiculous. So do not cut back on even one walnut, ok? ;)

And if its any consolation- I eat more nuts and avocado and salmon and of course hummus (I'm Israeli- what can I say?) than most people I know, only because they're my fav foods. So just enjoy them!

Creamy Skippy/Jif or all natural PB (the kind you have to stir)?

I'm a natural girl myself ;)

Wow, Pgeorgian, that was cold! Haha, people seem quick to suggest that someone isn't 'intellectually up to it' if they dislike a novel. What can I say, Chuck P. just isn't my thing, but to each his own! I really should give Fight Club a try though..

Minda, I kind of take issue with the description of how he poked fun at the person who saw pro-nihilistic elements in Fight Club. I don't think an author should be trying to didactically tie down one meaning in their books. He should welcome differing interpretations, no matter how far out they may seem. I dunno- if I wrote a book, and a room full of people bought it, read it, thought hard about it, and found something different in it than what I had intended to come across- I would be intrigued, not offended. And I would certainly never try to embarrass anyone!

I have to agree with Minda on Dave Eggers though- love him.

Lately though, I've been on a non-fiction kick. I just bought 'Why your World is About to Get a Whole Lot Smaller' - anyone heard of it?

Hitchhiker's Guide and all it's sequels, and The History of Everything are great mentions in this thread. I'm fond of Harry Potter, nice little world there.

I would recommend "Life of Pi" by Yann Martel for those having a hard time dealing with spirituality, or lack thereof. "Sophie's World" by Jostein Gaarder for those who enjoy philosophy. "House of Leaves" by Mark Z. Danielewski is a great psychological thriller. Chuck Palahniuk is just a BAMF. All of his books are amazing, "Fight Club", "Survivor", "Choke", "Rant"... all terrifically dry and full of sarcasm with a lovely dose of the "wtf" factor.

Not to mention Hunter S. Thompson is a god in the literary world.

Maybe I need to thicker skin, but I could never handle Chuck Palahniuk. I read 'Survivor' ages ago, and more recently 'Choke'- far too twisted for my taste! Don't get me wrong, I can handle dark sinister material, just so long as it always seems meaningful and neccessary. I hate shock value just for the sake of shock value!

Now, Life of Pi- THAT'S an incredible read. Martel is an amazing storyteller. Aaaand, I have a softspot for Canadian writers :)

Alright, my question:

Would you rather have a chocolate chip pancakes with maple syrup or eggs with toast and bacon/sausage? (Guess it depends if you're a sweet/savory type person)

You have my vote on the oatmeal. I will never, ever, ever, end my love affair with the breakfast of champions :)

However, if you're into the cold cereal thing (which I usually go to as a midnight snack type deal) then I'm all about shredded wheat, or Quaker 'Muffats' cereal. Both are awesome and have one ingredient- whole wheat. You can add some kind of sweetner if you wanted to (sugar, honey, agave), and/or some fruit, and/or some nuts/nut butter, etc. etc. etc.

Breakfast: Bob's Red Mill 5-grain hot rolled cereal soaked overnight in equal parts Plain Goat Yogurt (Delicious! Don't Judge!) and 1% milk, topped with raisins, 1 large banana, cinnamon, and sliced almonds

Lunch: Sandwich with two slices of dense Whole Grain toast with cottage cheese, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, and hot peppers. Carrot Sticks dipped in some hummus, and one of those bars of Lindt Excellence 70% dark chocolate.

Dinner: I was pretty hungry! I had a huge pile of Bulgar, with my famous honey-roasted Salmon, steamed asparagus and black beans. Glass of Juice, and an apple.

Snack: Shredded Wheat Cereal in milk with blueberries and some coconut. Warmed up in the micro, and topped with a dollop of Peanut Butter.

Woooo Canadians! Are you all going to check out some fireworks tonight??

Fav Canadian food is DEFFINITELY our abundant salmon, but you guys mentioned some great ones: montreal bagels, timmy hos, COWS ICE CREAM, and so many others.

Oh, and it might amuse you all to know that there was a topic a little while ago where everyone had to list their favourite places to get certain foods (burgers, fries, etc) and no one knew what poutine was. I had no idea that poutine was so exclusively Canadian!

After telling him he pulled a face and said, oh no he'd never be able to eat THAT... after a couple of minutes he admitted that he'd never in his whole life had peanut butter.... how is that possible? Almost 40 and never had peanut butter... ?!

Ok, this might even be worse than the guy who hadn't heard of raisins.

This actually made me think.

I consider myself an "adventurous eater", and deffinitely not picky, because I love to try foods of different cultures, and new foods in general.

But good lord, I would NEVER eat horse. Or dog. I actually think I would be sick if I had to. (Not trying to offend anyone who does enjoy a good... hearty... horse steak. ughhh).

But what is picky, then? People who won't try an avocado because it's "squishy" or people who won't eat animal products that they don't readily associate with food? Because I don't even understand eating Calamari. It's octupus! Common!

Really? Raisins???

Hasn't everyone's mom made them oatmeal raisin cookies at SOME point!?

And more importantly: do these people live in a hole?

I also find it weird when people don't like to eat food from other cultures, and would rather stick with the things they've always eaten. I seriously had a friend who ordered french fries at an indian restaurant (the waiter gave us dirty looks) and refused to try anything else.

Oh well, more tikka misala for me!

Just take it as a lesson!

Even if you feel like you're an 'all or nothing' person, not eating enough for a whole will ALWAYS result in overeating later on. At least that's what its like for me! Don't worry about it, and make sure to give your body enough fuel to feel good.

Wow, this topic got waaaay off track for a while. I didn't realize that eating more chickpeas would start arguments!

Anyways, thanks to everyone who actually got what I was trying to say here! I just used to eat a whole lot more meat, at least once a day, and sometimes twice. There was a whole lot of reasons for me to cut back, and I was just wondering if anyone in the CC community wanted to join me! That's all!

Eating a heavily meat-based diet is harmful to the environment and is unsustainable, I don't really know if you can argue otherwise. And although I really don't think that meat is bad for you or something, I do think there are a whole host of healthful meat alternatives that a lot of the carniverous Western world miss out on because they haven't thought beyond a dinner of steak and potatoes, you know?

And to those of you who recommended tofu- good god I love tofu. It's so awesome and easy to prepare. It's kind of intimidating to buy if you've never made it, but I'd reccomend anyone who hasn't yet tried it to do so! Yum.

And this wasn't supposed to be a thread arguing the merits of vegetarianism! I'm not even vegetarian.

I absolutely love quinoa! In fact I had some today with dinner.

I always wondered about the nutritional value of the differently coloured quinoa varities. Which one is the "healthiest"? I'm sure they're all good, but I've heard conflicting information. I usually go for the white kind, but I'll definitely pick up the red quinoa next time I'm in the store!
