| you probably are in starvation mode. When you're in starvation mode you STOP losing weight because your body holds onto every pound it possibly can. When you don't feed it enough it starts automatically storing all that it can. That's why you aren't losing weight. I agree with everyone here: eat more. | |||

| Mine is the bain of my existence. But i don't consider it a dent, because below my beltline nothing comes out again. I always referred to it as my fat-ledge. It is literally a LEDGE of fat. I had it when i was at my lowest weight. It was smaller, but it was still there. My mother always had it and she used to be stick thin. NONE of my friends has it. I'm actually really happy to hear about other people who do have it. I have never seen it on anyone else. Forget the ab workouts ladies (well, don't--ab workouts are great, but you can't spot reduce). I think the only way to get ride of that baby is liposuction and....YUCK. |

| I think you should shake up your exercise routine a bit. Your body gets used to the same exercise and stops responding effectively to it.
I notice you don't do any weight traning. Add some weight training if you can. You DON'T need to add more cardio. You get PLENTY of cardio. If you don't have access to weights, add pushups, situps and squats to your routine. It will raise your overall metabolism and help you burn the extra fat (if you really have any--if not, it'll just make you look more ripped, and who doesn't like that?). Also, eat a few more calories. If you are burning 500 calories and eating 1800, you have room for 300 or 400 more calories in your day to allow for effective weightloss. If you starve your body you won't lose the weight because your body will hang onto that extra weight to protect itself. I understand what you mean about having fat where it isn't supposed to be. I am 5'3.5, and weigh 122. Most people think this is the ideal weight for a woman but i have a gut, ample thighs, and very obvious love handles. And i have a healthy view of my body. So sometimes you can be an ideal weight according to your BMI and still have fat to lose in order to look the way you want to look. So feel free to ignore the people discouraging you from reaching your goals. However, make sure that you are reaching your goals in a healthy way and that you don't undereat. Mix up that routine! And good luck! |

| HATE: my thighs, my spare tire, my floppy boobs and my neck. But i either love or hate my body parts. Quite literally, i LOVE the rest of my body.
Maybe we should also add to this post the parts of our bodies we love (yeah, yeah, i know, we're supposed to love our whole selves *yawn*, whatEVER!). I LOVE my arms and my calves/ankles and my shoulders and my face and my hair. And i have no complaints about my hands and my feet. |

| Weight Loss | Should I Be Feeling Constant Hunger? | Nov 22 2007 19:35 (UTC) |

| Whenever i am being good and dieting properly, i feel STARVING ALL THE TIME. The entire time i was losing weight, i ate all the calories in my allowance (and sometimes more) and i ate all the things you are supposed to eat (lots of veggies, foods high in fibre, lean proteins, sufficient amounts of fat)--it didn't matter. I felt HUNGRY when dieting and stayed hungry until i lost the weight and moved back up to maintenance calories (which still kind of feels like dieting, actually...).
I'm not saying it's normal to be hungry all the time, and i'm sure most people adjust...i'm just saying you're not alone! Having said that, it does get a bit better after the first couple of weeks, but MAN. I'm not kidding. I was seriously hungry all the time. |

| Weight Loss | 1200 calorie minimum even if exercising? | Nov 16 2007 22:03 (UTC) |

| YES!!! You have to eat more! Mariyumm is wrong (sorry, Mariyumm). You want your net calorie intake to be at 1200. If you burn 400 then your body only thinks it is taking in 800 and it will enter starvation mode. It isn't an exact calculation--if you burn 400 calories, you shouldn't necessarily eat an extra 400 calories because in the time you burned those calories your body probably would have burned around 100 cals anyway. So you would eat something like 300 more. (This is just an example--the numbers are not accurate, obviously.)
So, yes, lynn, you're right. You have to eat to make up for the burned calories until your net calorie intake is around 1200 for the day. |

| Kem, there are lots of posts about plateauing that are more detailed than mine--they give you all the reasons one's body plateaus during a diet, so you might want to do a search on that to learn more about it.
Also, yes, i prefer to eat the low fat foods, but i was just suggesting a way that you could increase your calories in a healthy way without actually having to eat more food (if you don't want to eat more food). A nonfat sugar free yoghurt is usually around 50 cals whereas a yoghurt with fat in it is usually around 100 to 150. If you need to add an extra 50-100 calories, that's an easy way to do it. Also, you could try having a glass of juice. That's a really easy way to add around 200-300 calories without feeling like you are eating more. Keep in mind that you only have to eat the additional calories until your body starts losing weight again, and a few days thereafter. After that, you can go back to your regular 1200 calorie diet--as long as your deficit keeps you above 1200 calories. (i.e. if you burn 1000 calories a day, make sure you are making up for that 1000 calories with additional food such that your net calorie intake (after the deficit) is still around 1000-1200 calories per day. If you eat only 1200 calories and burn 500, your body thinks that you are only eating around 800 calories in the whole day, and you WILL plateau because your body will be starving. So eat to make up for it. This really works--trust me. Good luck! |

| I'm really surprised that no one has said that you have probably reached your first diet plateau. It sounds to me precisely that you have simply plateaud, particularly since you are so vigilant about eating under 1200 calories and are maintaining such a huge deficit.
And yes, the way to get out of a plateau is by eating a bit more. You body is probably hanging onto any fat that it still has because it has recognized that it is working at a very large deficit and thinks it needs to hang onto the fat to survive. As you have probably read on these forums, the way to deal with that is to eat MORE (it doesn't have to be a ton more, just 100 -300 more calories per day...making sure your deficit isn't any greater than 500 calories). This will shake your body up a bit and it will recognize that it is getting the calories you need and will let go of the remaining weight. And keep shaking up your workout routine as well. That will help too. By the way, adding extra calories doesn't necessarily mean adding MORE food, just different food. You could butter your bread on your sandwhiches, for example, or add some mayo. Or have a full fat yoghurt with sugar instead of a non-fat yoghurt with aspertame. Or prepare your oatmeal with milk instead of water. That kind of thing. It's easy to add calories without adding a lot more food if you are creative about it. Good luck. |

| If i kept track of sodium i would die. I eat a lot of asian food and i think my sodium count is through the roof. But i'm not going to stop eating it, so i just have to pay attention to my calories. But the Calorie-Count.com tools are designed so that you can take all that stuff into account. So if you are really following the Calorie-Count.com diet, you should be taking it all into account.
But i'm not... |

| Man, can i ever relate. I lost about 15 pounds in three months--lost about 20 over the course of the whole year (the last 5 or so were killer) but now i am back up to 124 instead of 118, where i should be. I'm 5'3.5. I think most people here will tell you to stop being a slave to the scale and concentrate on toning up. I guess that's good advice, but i tell ya. I don't think i can find time in my life to do much more exercise than i do, and i think i just have a spare tire and saddlebags that will always be there unless i get lipo which...NEVER!!! Anyway, i don't have any great advice or anything. I just wanted to let you know that i am in a similar situation--i've been a few pounds heavier than i want to be for many months now...just concentrating on exercise but my body just seems to want to hang on to that extra flab. So if not good advice, at least you have empathy! Try to stick to it. Good luck! |

| Thanks guys!
To answer your questions, JC, i have definitely reached the soft goal of being happier with my health and appearance. I have developed a strong sense of what i should eat and what i shouldn't and, more importantly (since i had a very good sense of right and wrong foods before), I now have a strong sense of reasonable quantities! It's excellent. I feel like calorie-count has offered me this power and freedom. I don't even really count anymore. I am happy to have got to the point where i can eyeball foods and know how much of them i can and should consume. Those last few pounds aren't really that important. They are symbolic to me of where i want to be in size and shape and a reminder that i am not quite there yet, but I am happy enough where i am that they don't bother me enough to really push through to the end. In a way, those last few pounds staying on me kind of keeps me on track in terms of maintenance. Anyway, hooray to calorie count! Thanks to my fellow counters and thanks to Igor and Erik! |

| Man. I have been trying to lose the last 5 pounds since--I am NOT joking--September 2006. My body just doesn't want to do it. It sucks sucks sucks. I wouldn't even care if those last chunks of flab would hit the road, but they just won't budge. It's so frustrating.
I am currently 118.2 and my goal weight is 115. I fluctuate about 3 pounds up (never down...i think my "real" weight right now is about 120). Ugh. |

| I have heard that it has less to do with lunch than it has to do with our circadian rhythms/sleep cycles. Something about 2 or 3 in the afternoon being about 8 hours after we wake up so our body and mind experience a natural slump around that time...something like that. Hmmm...maybe i'll google that. | |||

| I am 5'3.5 and i weigh around 120. I started at 135 or 140. My goal is 115, but as long as a fluctuate between 115 and 119, i am quite happy. I think i may have reached my goal but i'm not sure as i have yet to actually get down to 115. But it's not a magical number. i'm pretty okay with how i look now, though i would prefer it if i didn't have a huge tummy roll. The last five pounds seem to be impossible to lose and I have had the goal of losing them for about 6 months now. They aren't going ANYWHERE! I'm 30 years old. |

| I'm going to say basically what everyone else is saying. Get into absolute awesome kick ass shape. Be as happy as you can with yourself all on your own. And make yourself busy. Busy busy busy busy busy. Do things. Try new things. Don't let any oppportunities pass you by. Spend lots of time with friends doing fun activities. And be good to yourself. I moved out of my apartment with my boyfriend 11 months ago. I am still working on it, but I'm doing okay! It's hard work, but eventually you will feel better. Time time time. | |||

| I don't think that it is totally accurate to say that your body can't process other calories while you are drinking. What happens is that your body processes the calories in alcohol first (just like it processes simple sugars first) so that if you drink 500 calorieswhile you eat a thousand calorie meal, your body will process the 500 from alcohol before the 1000 from food so that any excess calories over your daily calorie expenditure will be stored as fat. I think that's what michellew54 was trying to say. It's not like alcohol inhibits calorie processing or something. It's just that it is easier for your body to process alcohol so it deal with those calories first. Either way, a calorie is still a calorie so you can drink 1000 calories and eat 500 as long as you are still within your daily expenditure. You'll probably be hungry though, and not feel very good the next day... :) Al |

| I've had some people tell me that i look better and healthier with a few more pounds on. I am by NO MEANS too thin and I have never had a body dysmorphia issue. I also notice that the people who specifically tell me that have their own weight issues and are generally obsessed with losing weight. So yes, i think the belief that jealousy is at the root of these comments is a good bet. I just rely on the weightloss tools. I am right smack in the middle of a healthy BMI range. I know that i could actually lose another ten pounds and still be within a healthy weight range, and i know that the squishy, wobbly tire around my waist and the fact that my body is healthy and that i have had fewer colds than ever this year tells me that I am not too skinny (in addition to the fact that I don't look to skinny). So, thankfully, I have got to the point where I just don't pay attention to those people, as much as it bugs me to hear their comments. |
