Fitness What is a good 5K time? Nov 27 2009

Well, I finished my run yesterday morning and had a great time! Running with approx. 35,000 others through downtown Dallas on Thanksgiving morning is definitely an experience. The first place runner had a time of 17:25. I finished with a respectable time of 29:57. Not going to win me any prizes but I didn't finish last either. Like someone said, I ended up finishing somewhere in the middle. For the timed 5K runners, I was 679 out of 2,495. I look forward to doing it again next year!

Are you from the Dallas area? I am running in the Turkey Trot in downtown Dallas in the morning and it will be my first public running event as well. My advice is just do your best but don't push yourself past your breaking point. If you need to walk, slow down & walk. Just enjoy the experience and have fun. That's my plan!

I just keep it short and simple. 'I've changed my eating habits and started exercising on a regular basis.' Normally, that wasn't the 'miracle-pill, easy-fix' answer they were hoping for and it's dropped at that. If they press on further, I know they understand that eating right and exercising IS REALLY the way to lose weight in a healthy manner and I will go into further details about counting calories and how much I exercise. But most people tune out when they hear it actually is work & will power. Poor, poor lost souls!

Minus the crock-pot-in-the-car idea, you could cook it overnight, wrap it in several layers of aluminum foil (aluminum is a great insulator) and then put that in a styrofoam chest. (styro is also a great insulator). You may have to warm it up a little when you get there but it should still be nice & warm & juicy.

I'm new to running (about 3 months now) and am running my first 5K on Thanksgiving morning so I can't offer much advice other than don't be dissapointed with whatever time you log. It will only get better as you keep running and improving. Good luck and have fun with it!

I will be treating every day up until and every day after Thanksgiving like any other day. Workout as normal, count calories as normal. But on Thanksgiving, I am throwing counting calories out the window. I honestly don't even want to think about the number of calories I will be eating because, while I'm not going to eat anything just for the sake of it, I'm not going to NOT eat something I want because of calories. I will definitely enjoy myself and not feel any guilt about anything I eat. Hopefully, the 5K race I'm running Thanksgiving morning will help counteract at least SOME of the extra calories I eat that day!

1. candy - This would have to be the Cadbury Egg at Easter. Some people hate them but I have to have AT LEAST one each year!

2. cookie/bar - There's no real set time of the year but at least once a year I will have to buy a bag of Oreos. They are way to dangerous to have around all of the time but now and then, you just have to have some. A stack of Oreos and a tall glass of cold milk. Nothing better!

3. main dish (turkey, honey ham, tamales, etc) - It would have to be roasted turkey at Thanksgiving. I buy sliced turkey from the deli for sandwich meat throughout the year but there's something about a nice, thick cut of turkey with dressing & all the other goodies that makes the turkey taste that much better.

4. side dish (baked yams, green bean casserole, etc.) - Again, back to Thanksgiving for the ever popular green bean casserole. It's just sooooooo good. Creamy & crunchy all at the same time.

5. pie/cake - Back to Thanksgiving for pecan pie. It's a Thanksgiving staple here in the south. Even my wife who is allergic to nuts will get a piece and meticulously pick out every single little piece of nut just so she can get to the middle.

Thanksgivingis coming!!! I can't wait until next week!!!

Sounds like every one is doing great and going strong! Keep it up!

I did my Day 1 yesterday and got through it fairly well. My initial max out was at 20 so I started off in column 3 and ended up getting through the workout fine and had an ending max of 12. I plan on doing this on M-W-F so today is an off day (at least from THIS workout).

You can't spot reduce fat where you want. Your body will decide where it will remove fat from. You'll just have to keep working until it's gone. Sad truth.

Looks like the line is pretty much drawn down the middle. Some of love the can stuff while others love fresh sauce. To each is own! Like I said, I grew up on the can sauce so it WAS a tradition until I tasted what homemade, real cranberry sauce tasted like and now it's hard to even think of going back!

Sad as it is to admit, I LOVE all the cereals that are not so good for you. In no particular order, on any random store outing I will buy a box of:

Reese's Puffs
Cinnamon Toast Crunch
Fruity Pebbles
Cocoa Pebbles
Frosted Flakes
Apple Jacks
Count Chocula
Cap't Crunch (normal, peanut butter, crunch berries)
Cookie Crisp
Fruit Loops

I am trying to start eating healthier cereals but I do LOVE all the yummy cereals I remember from my childhood.

I'm on my 5th month using it and find it very effective. I did the 1st month on the easy level, the 2nd month on medium and am now doing my 3rd month on hard and it still makes me break out into a good sweat. I don't use the cheapo resistance band that comes with the game; I use dumbbells for the resistance exercises and have seen my arms get some great definition. Not huge muscles but definition. Granted, I do more exercising other than just the Wii Active but I have lost 45 lbs in about 5 1/2 months so it definitely works. Keep it up, continue to push yourself and you WILL see results!

Luckily, I saved all of my 'pre-fat' clothes so I have stuff to wear now. My problem is those clothes are now 4-5 (or more) years old and any newer clothes I have are all XXL and look like a circus tent on me. So, it's either wear older, slightly-dated clothes or go out and by some new stuff. Thankfully Christmas is coming!

They only count the cals on the net carbs, they don't count the calories for the fiber.

Correct me if I'm wrong but fiber doesn't have calories. Only protein, fat, carbs & alcohol contribute to the calorie count. Or was I misinformed?

So did you gain weight?

No, I did not gain weight. As I mentioned above, I planned in advance for it and took steps to avoid the pitfall of gaining weight. In fact, I've lost about 45 lbs  since I quit. YES, it is possible.

I eat a hard boiled egg (70 cal), a container of yogurt (110 cal), piece of fruit, usually a banana (120 cal) and a fruit cereal bar (140 cal). Total = 440 cal. I space them out throughout the morning so I don't feel really full all at once and then end up hungry 2 hours before lunch.

Fitness 100 Push-Ups Challenge Nov 10 2009
19:29 (UTC)

I'm in! I just discovered the 100 Push-Ups website today and have been looking for something to help improve my ability to do push-ups. While I do a quick 10 with side planks in my normal daily workout, I would really like to increase the amount of push-ups I can do and build up my arms & shoulders at least some. I will do the initial test this week (probably tomorrow; I have an hour workout and 2.5 mile run scheduled for this afternoon) and plan on starting Week 1 next Monday, 11/16/09.

Background: I am male, 37 yr old, 6'3". I started my weight loss journey on June 1st of this year at a pretty sedentary 237 lbs. I had moved from a 34" waist pants to a 36" and those were getting tight. I was NOT going to move up to a 38" and knew I had to get started so I started counting my calories and exercising at least 5 days a week. I'm currently at 195, down 42 lbs so far and hoping to lose another 10 lbs or so. I get up at 6:00 AM every morning and jog about 3 miles and have signed up for my first 5K on Thanksgiving (I'm excited!) and also do a mix of strength training and cardio for about an hour 3-4 times a week in addition to another 2 - 2.5 mile run each afternoon. I started wearing my old 34" pants a few weeks ago and it felt REALLY good to be able to fit back in them!

I will repost once I do my initial test and find my initial max. On the way to doing 100 push-ups! We can do this!

I actually just discovered the 100 Push-Ups website today. I printed out all of the sheets am am planning on starting this evening. I normally to a quick 10 push-ups & side planks as part of my daily workout routine but really want to get better at them as well as build up my arms and shoulders a bit. I may not actually start 'Week 1' until next week so I can have a hard starting point and because I want to keep my 3 push-up days as M-W-F. If that's cool, I'll definitely join your challenge!

Health & Support Outside of being high in calories, what else is bad about fat? Nov 10 2009
17:46 (UTC)

I really don't count grams of fat. Instead, I focus on the % of my calories that come from fat and try to keep it between 20-30%. I know that 1 gram of fat has 9 calories so if I'm eating something that has 100 calories, I try to make sure it doesn't have much more than about 3.5 g of fat which would make 31.5 calories from fat. I also try to ensure that the trans-fats are kept to a minimum.

I quit smoking six years ago.  I was a pack a day smoker for about four years.  I didn't experience weight gain during that time. I think a lot of that had to do with how I quit. I didn't go cold turkey.  Instead I tapered off until one day I just didn't buy another pack of cigarettes.  Good luck with quitting smoking.

Same with me. I did not quit cold turkey. I took Chantax (sp?) and was also on the Nicotrol inhaler which both helped a lot. I ramped my smoking down over about a month and got it down to 1 or 2 a day and then was finally able to quit all together. I still have 1/2 a pack of cigarettes in my house but have had the strength to totally avoid them.
