Weight Loss Scale Confusion ... Aug 30 2009

Bathroom scales are not pinpoint accurate and it's the trend that matters rather than the absolute number.  Pick one set to weigh yourself on and stick with that...

I completely agree because I had the same problem! If you want to look for other weight loss indicators take measurements weekly and look for downward trends because even if the scale shows that you are not "losing" weight you may still be losing fat.

I saw that article too and I was totally amazed!!!! I just think about all the parents that give their kids crap like sunnyd and soda and then wonder why they have fat kids! I never had any of that **** as a kid. If we wanted soda we got seltzer water with a splash of juice!!!

Kickthehabit - congrats!!! I too have an "abnormal relationship" with food and I think it is fantastic that you have found something to help you get over it. I definitely think I will try to keep your sponsors advice in mind since I think it is very pertinent.

Health & Support recent gluten intolerance... Jul 27 2009

Carcar-

I am not gluten intolerant but I have Ciliac's and I know between when I first had symptoms 2002 to when they made the official diagnosis and I learned about it in 2005 I went from about 130 to 95 pounds and put all of the wieght back on when I began effectively following the GF diet, according to my doctor due to the extreme circumstances of my case this was to be somewhat expected. If you are maintaining the 4 to 5 pounds you began gaining in jan. I would look to what has changed in your diet of other than gluten ie what is in the GF products that you might not have been eating before or eating in such high quantities.

Ok  the taking of a bath, eating turkey, cheese, a banana, reading, etc, I can mention to him.  The other thing he will have to discover on his own.

Thank you, everyone.  It's good to hear he is not alone.

LOL I'm not sure I would have been able to mention that to my son though either!!! But no, he is definately NOT alone!!! Glad we could help :-)

Have any of you experienced teenage insomnia?  What did you do?  Please help.  My son is getting so tired of not sleeping and being well rested.

Hello-

I am 21 and have had insomnia for my entire life. I was on various forms of sleeping meds for about 7 years which I slowly weened myself off at christmas time. I was fine for a few months and then couldn't sleep again. My doctor referred me to a neurologist to who recommended I take these steps:

1. Turn away all clocks so that I cannot see them

2. Leave my cell phone outside my bed room

3. Get up close to the same time everyday, at a reasonable hour, so for me on school/work days I get up around 8 am the other days I can sleep later, 'til about 10:30 am.

4. Turn off all external stimuli i.e. music (my preferred choice), tv, etc.

5. Masturbate right before going to sleep - and yes that is really what he suggested and you are probably having the same reaction I did >:-O "Really? Is this guys actually telling me to masturbate???" - it actually works better than sleeping pills because there is no morning hangover.

Hope this helps, once the freak-out factor has worn off.

California Pizza Kitchen- the closest one I know of is like 4 hours away!

Trader Joe's and Pinkberry- never been to either, but want to try both!

Chipotle- I've been to one and thought it was pretty good, but there aren't any where I live

Whole Foods Market

Where are you from?

Really? Authentic ones should only contain corn flour, no wheat at all. Are there any Mexican markets in your area? They'll also be cheap there! Trader Joe's also sells real corn tortillas, if you have a TJs near you. Whole Foods also sells a wide variety of GF products, but WF tends to be pricey. I bought a ton of GF flours at a local health food store and used them in baking. Rice flour was consistently the best in baked goods, IMO.

Also, Chinese, Japanese and Thai markets are a great place to get yummy rice noodles, udon and rice flour wonton/dumpling wraps, etc. They also sell many different types of soy sauce without wheat in the brew process, like tamari. I'm also allergic to nuts, so I feel you - I just leave them out of any Thai recipes that call for them :)

I'm a big proponant of not trying to re-create gluten things with GF products; I've always found them dissapointing. Instead, you might try looking at cusines in countries where gluten is generally not used, like those above. You'll find recipes that are delicious, flavorful and won't need any kind of substitutions.

I never thought of the mexican markets but I will definately have to find out!!! and i totally agree about trying to recreate regular food with GF substitutions and usually I stick with asian cuisines and rice noodles, although I dont really eat carbs all that much but some times I just really crave chicken ceasar wraps... Thanks!!
