| Health & Support | calories and burning them......confused | Sep 23 2009 15:34 (UTC) |
|
Original Post by niccinoonoo: You will burn that just living, you don't have to burn any more through activity. Your burnmeter (blue block on right hand side of "My Home" page) will indicate how many calories someone of your current weight, height and activity level burns. Your burnmeter minus your eatmeter gives you your defict (for weight loss) or surplus (for weight gain) for each day. It takes a 3500 calorie deficit from your maintenance calories for a pound of weight loss, and a 3500 surplus (on top of your maintenance calories) for a pound of weight gain. For weight loss, don't go under 1200 and aim for a deficit of around 500 a day. If you can't get that through diet because you are already at the minimum of 1200, increase your activities. Every little deficit counts towards the 3500, every pound contributes towards the goal. Good luck!

| Weight Loss | Eating most of the days calories at once/having a large dinner | Sep 23 2009 15:16 (UTC) |

Original Post by bettiebebop: I hear what others are saying here, but my purely anecdotal experience as a big supper eater has not indicated that I put on weight as result of consuming the majority of the same amount of calories later in the day as I would have spread out through the day. The one problem I have encountered is that I am pretty hungry while preparing dinner and that can result in uncontrolled snacking while cooking. I try to counter this by making sure I have a snack at about 3pm (apple, yoghurt etc) and have healthy snacks on hand while cooking (crunchy crudites are good). Its seems more sensible to space your calories but it doesn't work for everyone.

I can't believe my spot at 5'2" 110 STILL hasn't been filled. Pity about my aversion to posting photos of myself online else I would jump in there. I have got to say the 5'2" girls at 130 look great to my surprise as I always though that weight would be way to heavy for me at my height. |

| Health & Support | Do "Normal" People Count Calories?? | Sep 23 2009 15:03 (UTC) |
4 |
No, normal people do not count calories. I think a percentage of the urbanised population of industrialised communities count calories because we are so inherently detached and alienated from all natural acts that we can't function without constant supervision lest we starve or gorge our senses in a myriad of destructive ways. |

Its not slang, but English biscuits are American cookies, but I don't know what biscuits are in American. Are they scones? And not being American or British, will someone please tell me how to find normal pouring cream in foods on CC? Man, the variations on cream here are astonishing. Car and traffic related slang: boot - trunk bonnet- hood pavement- sidewalk traffic jam - traffic jelly :) |

| Weight Loss | How many pounds do you fluctuate in day? | Sep 22 2009 11:08 (UTC) |

Between 2-3 kilograms (4-7 pounds). I weighed 50 kgs or 110 this morning and I will probably be 52.5 before bed. I eat a lot weight wise (around a kg and a half) and drink 3+ litres of water, so that accounts for it. |

| Calorie Count | Change in activity level justified? | Sep 18 2009 16:18 (UTC) |

If I did that, would I still log activities on top of the light activity level that I 'earned' through walking 1/2 an hour? If I changed to light now, I wouldn't log my activities on top, but it would still give me more calories burned than 'sedentary' and logging. I'm just dumbfounded that there is such a large gap between being sedentary and working my @$$ off twice week and a bit of gentle exercise twice a week, and just being lightly active with no extra activities *sigh* Anyway, thanks for the good and prompt advice, as usual, and have a lovely weekend. |

Thanks! I found the nutritional info on the pack which gave 186 calories per 100 grams which works out to be about 372 per pizza base or crust. I had estimated 470 so I had a bigger deficit than I thought. I think the jewel pizza crust is waaay off. Even looking at the fat content it appears that more than half the dough is made of oil. Yuck. |

| Weight Loss | Calorie amounts per meal? | Sep 16 2009 15:17 (UTC) |

Its up to you. A lot of people will insist that you must eat breakfast, or that you shouldn't eat a big supper, but there is scant scientific basis for these view points. Mix it up a bit and see what works best for you: a three way split, or allocate the bulk of your calories to your favourite meal and skimp on the others. Just bear in mind that you do need energy for activities, so don't starve before a workout just so you can gorge yourself later. |

If you are only eating 500 calories I am surprised you are feeling good and doubt you are eating 'normally'. Why don't you post a sample menu of what you eat in a day to see what you are surviving on because I can't understand how your body functions on so few calories. |
|||
| Weight Loss | Anyone lost by eating maintenance for ideal weight? | Sep 15 2009 11:28 (UTC) |
9 |
Your current maintenance is between 1730-1950. That means if you eat your maintenance at 110 (about 1600 calories on lightly active) your deficit is 130-350. Taking the average of a deficit of 270 per day, That means it will take you about 325 days to get to your goal. So yes, it seems more than possible that you will lose weight in a year by eating the maintenance calories at your goal, as this will create a deficit. Another way of looking at it is to say 25 pound times 3500 calories= 87500 calories divide by 365 days = 240 calories deficit per day. Whether you do this with diet or exercise is up to you. Its been said that the slower you lose the weight, the more likely it is to stay off, so this sound like a good plan provided you are not discouraged by slow movement on the scale. |

Sorry, the quoting made it seem that my remark was pointed at you alone, but its actually meant for everyone (including the OP) who thinks its ridiculous to be inspired by a celebrity's looks but its okay to denigrate a celebrity for those same looks. Its the flip side of the same superficial coin. |

| Weight Loss | Over-indulging dinner last night and working out today... | Sep 14 2009 14:43 (UTC) |
|
Original Post by gi-jane: I would say eat normally and take the deficit created by the additional activity. I take the week's consumption minus the week's burn to determine if I am at risk of gaining. 400 calories once a week should not be problem, but at some point you need to create a deficit (calories in vs calories out), whether you want to do this in two days or seven. As you have already created the deficit with exercise, put the over-indulgence behind you and move back to the regularly scheduled programme. 400 calories over would be a problem if you do it every day for 9 days: that could cause you to gain a pound. The point is not to panic and throw in the towel, but if its going to be regular occurence, consider "budgeting" for it. For example, my maintenance is between 1400 and 1700, so most days (during the week generally) I try to keep between 1300 and 1600. As I don't calorie count on weekends, I find I unwittingly consume about 2000 calories on each of those days, so I do need to budget for that 600 calorie surplus during the week.
