Young Calorie Counters Why is this not working? Am I doing something wrong?? Jul 09 2009

I agree with erin.  120 is really thin for someone who is 5'7".  Have you used the tools on this website to determine a goal weight.   I'm only 5'2" and the goal weight given me is 120.  Personally, I will be happy at 130, but I am 50 years old.  I know when I was 16 I weighed about 120.  Of course I thought I was overweight but when I look at the old pictures of myself, I was just fine.  Honestly.   You need to follow the guidelines of how much to eat after you use the tools.   You are exercising plenty.  Yes, a little bit of weight training would be useful to strengthen your upper body, but you have to realize that muscle weighs more than fat.  This means you could weigh 140 and be just perfect because you have lost the fat, but gained muscle.   Please note,  a woman should not be too lean.   I know men will work out and muscle up to get really low body fat percentages, below 10% and even below 5%.   A woman's body is designed to carry more fat.  It's not just to "have babies", however it is part of the complex set of hormones and cycles that a woman has.   You can do harm to your body in so many ways by getting too low a body fat.  Please read as much as you can on woman's nutrition.  An woman who is an athlete will often have so low of body fat that they do not cycle.  Although this will eventually rectify itself ( usually ), it is not necessary for the average woman.

Getting in shape and developing good nutritional habits at a young age is a great thing to do!  Just learn as much as you can so that you know you are doing healthy things.

Weight Loss Recording in the weight log during that time of the month. Jul 08 2009

I try to log everyday.   It just depends how it effects you!  If it is too much of a downer, then only weigh every week or every other week.  You really need to pay attention to the trend line.   That should consistently be going down.  It calculates whether you are loosing or gaining over the long term.   The more you weigh, the more your weigth will fluctuate from day to day.   Someone 200 pounds could easily fluctuate  a couple pounds each day.  That is be 200 one day, 203 the next and 197 the third.   The trend at that point would say 200 across the board.   If over three days time, the scale shows, 200, 196, 201.  The trend would be going down, that is, weight loss is occurring.

So, if you can handle seeing the weight flutaution, put it all in.  If it bohers syou, just record once a week, once every two weeks, or only when the weight is the same or lower than the previous entry.

Hi Chrystal,

Myself I have only been on a few weeks, but I am doing really well.  I've only lost 4 pounds but I feel better.  I have to say this is result of many different things going on.

  • Been in therapy for a little over a year with a therapist that is good for me.  I am really learning to respect myself and demand respect for myself.
  • A change of meds.  In Feb and March I was really really tired and consulted a physician.
  • Finding Calorie Count.  There are other equally good sites, but this is the one I find.  Having a convenient way to keep track of what I eat is great.  I'm not a good note taker, but have constant access to a computer at work and home
  • Walking my puppy ( technically no longer a puppy as she just turned 1).
  • A Marvelous week at Girl Scout Camp, with lots of walking, makes it easier to walk now.
  • Oh..... turning 50 in April.  I'm tired of making excuses for not doing what I want to do.
  • Journaling on CC.  I don't care if anyone reads it, but I leave it public because somehow, I feel that if I don't leave it public, then what's the point of writing it.  But writing helps keep it focused.
  • Somehow, right now, it is easy to pass up the chips and the cookies..... I have no explanation.   I do have chocolate protein shake at least once a day. Yogurt and fruit is really yummy right now.

One of the things my doctor did was move my Zyrtec to the evening.  It had never bothered me as far as causing drowsiness, but just in case.   Allergies can make you very sleepy too.  You should probably continue the Zyrtec, talk to your doc.  Sometimes I stop Zyrtec for the same reasons you did... I end up with hives a few days later and swollen and tired.  I don't get respiratory symptoms though.  That has never been my issue.  Also, my doctor started me on Cymbalta in the morning and I have been weaning off of Zoloft.  I had been on Zoloft for 5 -10 years.  I can't remember.   The first few days I went from tired to depressed, but then started feeling good.   I slipped back into depression, called doc, she upped the dosage of Cymbalta to 60mg.   My Zoloft was at 200mg and is now down to 50mg.  In a few weeks I am to drop it altogether.   Ok... these things may not be your answer.  All I know was I was so tired..... I couldn't even move a millimeter, at least that is what it felt like.  I didn't feel depressed even.  The main point is TALK with your doctor.  Hopefully you have one you can talk to often, to get results.   It helps that I had been seeing a therapist for a year and she agreed that 80% of the problem is physiological, the result situational.   I know this all sounds cliche,  oh.... another crazy, middle-aged (50), over-weight woman.... but it is who I am.   I have to say that these changes are part of the reason I even have the energy and drive to diet right now.   I feel so much better.  No, life around me hasn't changed, I am changing.  This site is helping because I am forcing myself to participate in forums, log food and activity,  and journal.   Anyway, I hope this helps and I am not overwhelming with too many details

Try to get some rest!  Yes, easiser said than done.  Are you eating enough?   If you feel like this for too long, talk to your doc.  I felt like that for several weeks, and one day couldn't get up to go to work.  I had taken kids to school, come back home and just couldn't do anything.   Called the doc and basically had some med changes.  It didn't help overnight, but with calling every few days,  I feel better.  Of course I don't know your whole situation, but just a thought.
