That's why when people ask me about it, I say that I am "somewhere in between vegan and vegetarian." I hate labels of all kinds, because there are so many gray areas out there. You might be amazed at how many vegans buy products that are tested on animals. I'm not vegan, but I try to only buy household products certified by the CCIC. I guess if I had to label myself it would be "cruelty-free" but even then it's impossible to be completely cruelty-free in this world today... |

I agree. Sometimes I wonder if I will ever be able to get off sodas or if it's just a pipe dream. |

So then you also disagree with the 14-page list of sources they used? |

Kim Barnouin has a Masters degree in Holistic Nutrition. I would say she definitely qualifies to give out nutrition advice. I didn't notice any contradictory evidence in it. In fact, one thing that impressed me so much is that everything in the book was pretty parallel with other great health books I've read. I gotta say, I'm quite surprised at the negative reviews. The only thing I could see that would put people off would be the attitude in which the book was written. |

There are so many different levels of veganism. I commend people who wish not to exploit other creatures. Good for them. I'm happy just not supporting any sort of cruelty. Chopping off a bees legs is horrible to me. That's much worse than my original visualization of the beekeeper squishing one! Not only does her leg get cut off, but as the article said, the worker bees smother her because she's injured. Now if you want to keep eating honey, that is your decision but it seemed like this forum was started precisely to discuss why some people won't eat it, and that's what we should stick to. |

A lifelong diet of too much protein damages your kidneys. I've read that in several different sources. It's the same for our pets too, which is why there is such a huge controversy surrounding high protein dog foods. Their point with the numerous althetes they mentioned in the book is that you can get all the protein you want on a vegetarian diet. They said you need between 16-80 grams a day. So say, for myself, I would probably need about 16 because I sit on my butt all day. The althetes probably need 80. But people in general consume more than that just because of all of the animal products they eat too much of. Keep in mind this book lists sources for almost every point they make- it's not just two people giving their opinion about something. They pull their info from factual studies, books, and articles. |

That is so true. It just depends on the indivdual. If someone spoke to me that way in person, I'd want to hit them and do the opposite of what they say. But the book really helped me. I NEED a smack in the face to get me to quit my bad habits. I have veg books of all type though, and they all do their part. |

That's what I don't understand. I feel stuffed all day and I am always full, yet according to the calorie counter I'm only eating about 1100 calories a day- this is NOT on a diet. This is just what I eat. There has to be a mistake somewhere. I even started doubling up on servings that I would add to the counter just in case I ate more than I thought, and it made it up to I think about 1400 doing that. So I guess instead of cutting calories, I should just really beef up the exercise I'm doing (which right now is almost nil). I guess I just have really bad metabolism. |

This is such a great idea to do with everything you buy. Lately I've been trying to really branch out from "almost" veganism to being environmentally friendly in every way possible, and I learned so much about where things come from and what goes in to making them.... It's amazing how little we are aware of- I really wish industries would not keep people in the dark about this stuff. |

I also found this info: Supersedure is the process by which an old queen bee is replaced by a new queen. Supersedure may be initiated due to old age of a queen or a diseased or failing queen. As the queen ages her pheromone output diminishes. When a new queen is available, the workers will kill the reigning queen by "balling" her — clustering tightly around her until she dies from overheating. (This overheating method is also used to kill large predatory wasps that enter the hive in search of food and may be used against a foreign queen attempting to take over an existing colony.) Balling is often a problem for beekeepers attempting to introduce a replacement queen. located at this link: |

The last book I read was "Prey" by Michael Crichton. I almost literally read it all in one sitting- took me from around 10am to around 4pm to read it straight though. I mostly just stopped for bathroom breaks and to eat. lol. It is a little science fictiony which I am not normally into, but if you can dig Jurassic Park, than you can dig this book. |

The protein chapter is quite informative. To paraphrase it: People are more in danger of consuming too much protein rather than too little. Vegetarians get plenty of protein from beans, nuts, lentils, imitation meats, etc. It also says it's a myth that we have to combine certain foods in order to be able to use the protein, i.e. you must eat beans with rice. What they are actually finding out now is that as long as you eat a variety, you are fine. You do not have to eat certain foods together at the same time because it will all even out over the days. They make a good point asking if you have ever heard of someone having a protein deficiency. Nope. Doesn't happen. In fact, people in other countries who generally eat about half as much protein as we do, live much longer and healthier lives. And the ADA reports that an average vegetarian diet provides twice as much protein that is required in a day. |

I definitely didn't post that article to start a peta debate, but they don't just go around killing dogs. They euthanize abandoned pets that people dump off on them. There are not enough homes for all the unwanted pets in the world. Shelters euthanize MILLIONS of pets every year. Peta does NOT have a shelter, they just do fostering. Where would they put the dumped off animals! It's either euthanization, or back on the streets. Anyway, that being said, I kind of understand the thing with not putting insects on the same level as animals. I swat mosquitos and biting flies. Anything else I definitely won't touch. But it does bother me if there is cruelty going on when it comes to making money. Yes I'm going to swat them if they are biting the crap out of me, but no I do not condone killing them to increase profits. BUT, it doesn't bother me that people eat honey, while it devastates me that people eat factory farmed foods. But the article pointed out the fossil fuels being burned having to truck bees all over the country- and THAT is an issue we'd better take seriously because if we don't drastically reduce emmisions in the very near future, we are literally going to kill our species off. |

I looked around and am still trying to find where I read that they kill the queen bee. I am 99.9% certain I read that from a Burt's Bees article, but I did find this article which was VERY informative: http://prime.peta.org/2009/01/but-what-about- honey-is-it-cruelty-free I was going to just post the article in here but it was sooooo long. |

I remember it because they said that their bees are raised humanely in that they DON'T kill the queen, but other honey producers do. I'm going to go try to find where I read that as soon as I'm done postinjg this. I think you are probably safe if you buy locally though because I'd be willing to bet it's only the mass producers of honey that would do that. I only buy mine from the farmer's market, and I've only bought like one container in the past year because agave nectar is just as good and is supposed to be much better for you anyway. |

| Health & Support | 5'8" what is your weight | Jun 23 2009 03:13 (UTC) |

I'm about 5'7" and right now I weigh about 165. For about a year or so I weighed about 135 and I looked and felt GREAT. I keep talking about wanting to be that way and my new friends tell me I'd look sickly at that weight... but I wouldn't- and I didn't!! It's so annoying and hurtful that people don't think I know my own correct weight. At 165 I feel awful, like I'm huffing and puffing all the time. At 135 I was out exercising all the time, and it didn't even feel like work..... I was lean and energetic. It's really glad to talk to people who understand that different people are best at different weights.... |

I believe I read from Burt's Bees that beekeepers kill the queen bee every so often to increase production. I don't know anything about that- that's just what I read. I didn't have a problem with honey until I read that. Now I mostly just buy agave nectar, but I will buy honey from local farms sometimes. Either way, I'd still prefer it not be from a large mass-produced company. |

I absolutely loved Skinny Bitch. I am a vegetarian on my way to being vegan. It didn't just talk about animals though. Probably the most helpful for me was the chapter on sodas. I'm a total soda addict and I'm really working to cut them from my diet. This book definitely does not advocate eating whatever crap you want. I wanted to add though, that my favorite veg book of all time is John Robbins "The Food Revolution." Seriously, the guy is a god. |
