| Pregnancy & Parenting | is it healthy to be a vegitarian while pregnant? | Dec 13 2009 14:00 (UTC) |

I read it in the books of N. Worm, a German nutrition scientist. It was something about the long-chained fatty acids and the brain development, and that vegetarian had babies slightly retarded, because the lack of those special fatty acids affected the fetus's brain development. It doesn't mean vegetarian can't have healthy babies, sorry, that was misleading. Usually vegetarians take great care for their health and their family and are knowledgeable about their compensational needs, so no problem here. I guess not every vegetarian is that knowledgeable though.

Well, statistically, vegetarian have less healthy children. Whatever you choose, take care that you get enough protein and iron! |

Is there a link to report mistakes in the database? There is just no way an apple can have the same amount of iron as red meat. Where does the data come from, anyway? |

I have read somewhere, that NASA would consider producing Quinoa on a spaceflight, because it has all the essential proteins. But it doesn't have much fat, does it. |

I am recovering from my 2nd bout of hip pain. I've had it. Again the wall came at the 15 min total jogging time, even though I increase jogging time slowly. Shrug. I can forget about jogging half an hour now. |

thanks for sharing your story. I was surprised myself, I wasn't sure whether the deadlifts were such a good thing for my back. But boy, I had so much sore muscles from the lunges! I am looking forward to how I feel in the next week. Hopefully stronger. |

yeah, I am figuring that out as well. So far I have bought "New rules of lifting for women" and read it. Then I bought a pair of dumbbells, which you can screw weights on, and a swiss ball, and have started the first week of the workouts in the books. I think I already can feel a small difference, especially with my low back pain. Is there anything you enjoy beside walking and biking? Swimming? What do you think about jogging? There is something like the couch 2 5k program, there is a thread in the Fitnessforum.

ok, I jogged/walked again, but not more than 10 minutes. My hip likes that much better. I have to break off the c25k plan and do my own revised plan. *scratching my head. |

I think I have to stop running, my hip pain is back, :( .
I don't know what I should do, go back to week 3 program (there I had no hip pain at all), or entirely stop until pain is gone. The pain is not bad, I can walk normally and all, but I am afraid it's gonna be worse. |

| Weight Loss | At what BMI did you reach waist circumference of 35 inches? | Aug 11 2009 15:37 (UTC) |

hmm, I found a study that says, that abdominal obesity is overestimated in women! "In the San Antonio heart study, twice as many women as men had a waist circumference above the level given in the current guidelines, whereas the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome was similar in both sexes, thus supporting the notion that abdominal obesity is overestimated in women" I saw the study here: http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/330/7504/ 1363#TBL1 the measured insulin resistance and mapped it against waist circumference. |

Original Post by vwiggins: it's frustrating, isn't it. I got a bit confused by the text: that below 35 could be low risk, if waist circ. is low. I see this table: http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/public/heart/ obesity/lose_wt/bmi_dis.htm
and I see BMI<30 and Waist circ. <35'' equals very high risk. :-(

well, I really don't agree. Like the poster above, my hunger is diminished directly after workout. Exercise was sometimes the only reason for my weight loss. |

oops, my app is called Trails not iTrails. So iTrails is better than Trail? For Hiking is Trails good enough, just not for jogging. |

I am using iTrails too, but it has it quirks. Sometimes the points are all over the place and the data is all wrong. I have to restart the iphone. For Jogging it has been completeley useless, it only made 3 points in 25 minuts. Argh! |

hang in there, chiquita. It gets easier the next time. well done! I ended week 4 today and it has gotten a bit easier. But after the end of the run I have now belly cramps, which is my body telling me that I was overdoing it. So I am considering an intermediate step for week 5. |

hmm. I have to read more info on this. thanks for the article.
At the gym I was put on those machines, and after a while, I could do a little bit of free 2 weight training with max 6lbs barbell. Was that all wrong? The article is saying the machine is not for women, why?

Well, there could be other causes than exercise for your tiredness, for example iron deficiency and such. But to check this you have to go to your doctor and have your blood tested. |
