when i do them (i have never had back problems) i try to focus on sticking out my chest and slightly sticking out my butt, keeping my back strong...not arched in an exaggerated way, but just with my butt sticking out slightly, also knees slightly bent. i never let my back round during a deadlift.

Original Post by jjlewis305:

I have to jump in on this real quick as I've checked out the link that the poster provided in their beginning thread. I do most of these exercises, some are seperate (like the lunge, then I do overhead press) , some the same. I'm a little worried though about the jump squat to chin with knee tuck last one in b column. I do not have a pull up bar so any suggestions. I can't do a pull up anyways. I have to say though, I just started jump squats yesterday and I hurt today, but a good hurt. I am taking a break today to start my new improved routine tomorrow.

Thanks for you time.

i do cardio 2-3 days of the four off days...i try for three.

also, the pull ups are a lot easier when you add a jump up to the bar. still, i have trouble doing 15 of them as called for on some days. on those days, i make up my own exercise, usually consisting of jump squats, squat thrusts, planks, and pushups, making sure it's a full body exercise and it's something that keeps my heart rate up. so you can be a little creative. but i've also had a lot of fun sticking to the program as is, with that one exception. i'm in the third week of eight and already very pleased with the results.

Foods I'm confused by the pie chart. Jan 15 2008

it works out cause a gram of fat is 9 calories, where protein and carbs are 4 calories. so:

Fat: 39*9 = 351

Protein: 63*4 = 252

Carbohydrates: 206*4 = 824

Total calories: 351+252+824 =1427

Fat percentage: 351/1427*100 = 24.5%, your fat intake for the day

Protein percentage: 252/1427*100 = 17.65%, protein

Carb percentage: 824/1427*100 = 57.7%, carbs

hope that helps.

you may be able to cook without oil. try it! this site, world's healthiest foods, tells you how to saute and stir fry without oil, using chicken broth. click the link and then look for "healthy saute" and "healthy stir fry."

kankan you should also do squats and deadlifts in conjunction with your lunges. and use very heavy weights -- really challenge yourself. the only way to get the butt muscles to go OUT is to grow them! so you shouldn't be afraid of building bulk there at all.

stiff-legged deadlifts...number one butt builder in my book.

read this article. it suggests a variety of approaches. and melkor posted it on another thread.

there's nothing hugely wrong with the body bar, but using a barbell provides extra benefits in terms of balance, stability, and challenging all those muscles a bit more.  variety and continually challenging yourself is the key, which is what you did, so kudos for that.

also if you want super toned legs, add some deadlifts. a good exercise for the butt and hamstrings, which you want to strengthen to balance all the quad work you're getting from lunges.

check out this website on female weight lifting. it's a great resource.

i would have to say yes. i'm pretty sure this is a myth. you need to talk to someone who knows better than me, like melkor, but by doing high reps and low weights i believe you are building on your muscular endurance but not doing anything to change the shape of your muscle. you do want the muscle to be more defined, and it's not going to get bulky. for most women that is a physical impossibility. try it and see, if you don't like it you can go back to low weights, but that's not going to help you in terms of pure functionality and strength or definition.

low reps, super high weights (like 4 to 6 reps maybe) is what body builders use. you should aim for 8 to 12 reps with increasing weights. i have found that it's only since i started squatting with 40 and 50 pound barbells that i see a major difference in the slimness and muscle tone in my legs and butt. my butt i actually kind of round now where it never was before, EVER. don't be afraid of the heavy weights or the "guy" weights.

15 reps might be a bit much. why not try increasing the weight to something you can only do 8 to 10 reps with? and build from there as giggle puppy said. i think you'll see much better results. this would require a barbell, or you could do dumbbell lunges.
Fitness Sore Knees from Running Jan 14 2008
13:35 (UTC)

do you do any strength training? your knees need muscle to support and power them through your runs. it's very important. your other muscles need to be strong too, running involves your whole body. read this article.

also, the elliptical doesn't seem kind to proper knee movement. a combination of the exercises might be jarring to your knees. maybe switch to the treadmill or stairclimber, even just one day. you can get an intense workout that's easy on your knees and great for your legs by walking on the treadmill at super high inclines, like 10 or whatever feels comfortable for you. it's great for the butt which is also important for running.

Weight Loss New to the CC Forums, would like a quick eval of what I've been doing Jan 13 2008
19:57 (UTC)

rice, corn, and black beans with chicken would taste GREAT with some avocado. an avocado has about 300 calories.

also, i would make a burrito with all that stuff, and find a good hearty wrap for it (somewhere in the 170-200 calorie range).

i would also add a lemon juice and olive oil dressing to the salad...i really can't imagine a greek salad without it.

also, a turkey and cheese sandwich, or more feta on the greek salad...i think all that right there probably adds up to almost 1000 calories.

I don't think you look chunky at all. I think you look like you are in the 40-50 age range though. After seeing that you are only 33, I think you should maybe change your makeup a bit. I think the red lipstick really ages you! Try a lighter color, maybe a gloss and that would suit you better. As for working out..I would just say maybe focus on toning what you already have because it doesn't look like you really need to lose weight. Goodluck!

it's all in the red lipstick. don't do it!!! try a sheer color and sweep some gloss over it. also, you seem to have very light eyebrows...is that natural or are you a compulsive plucker? if the latter, stop it, let them grow in. if not, go to a makeup store and have someone help you find a nice eyebrow pencil and show you how to create natural looking darker eyebrows.

that dress also seems styled for an older woman. try something more decorative and youthful! i understand you have a daughter and don't want to be running around in a dress that shows your ass, but you are only 33! i am almost 30 years old and i wouldn't want to be in a dress like that, there are so much more fun things to wear.

you asked. sizewise, you seem fine, compared to most americans. just work out and be healthy. but yeah, definitely hit the makeup counter at macy's or lord and taylor. get a free makeover and they will give you some tips.

loving yourself and striving for "perfection" go hand in hand, but it has to be your own version of perfection, or your own definition. no one should try to look like a touched-up celebrity. but there is nothing wrong with wanting your body and health to be the best it can be. we all have our own personal goals and challenges, the key is never losing sight of those. hard work is reflected in our body composition, and while i don't look like jessica alba, when i look at myself i am reminded of all the hard work, dedication, and discipline it took to get here, and that makes me proud.

yes, i need to to eliminate it for a while also. for a couple months i hardly drank anything, maybe one or two light beers a couple of times, but then the holidays hit and bam, wine all the time, parties, end of school, lots of stress busting. i stopped losing, which was fine, but i'm having a hard time easing out of that routine. i finished off the last wine in the house this weekend and am going to go back to trying to plan different activities with my friends that don't involve alcohol. that really seemed to work well.
Fitness Exercise Class or Walking outside? Jan 07 2008
13:20 (UTC)

walking can burn calories if you do short run/walks.

i only started running by incorporating short intervals of running into my walking. say 30 seconds to 1 minute to start, because that's all i could do.

you work your way up to running more, and the intervals are good for calorie burning and challenging your cardiovascular strength, which is one of the major benefits of running over walking.

you can start at your own pace and level and take time building up. it's a fun thing to do because it's awesome when you realize you are making progress. the first time i was able to run for five minutes straight was a huge thing for me.

that said, i love gym classes as well, and kickboxing is an AMAZING workout. toned up my core, butt, thighs, shoulder and back really quickly. it's also a lot of fun, especially if you're stressed out. spinning is pure torture but also a mega calorie burner.

Some people smoke and live to be ninety. Some people eat 4 whole eggs per day and never have cholesterol problems.

trust me, if i knew i was one of those people, i'd be living it up. but one never knows, unless you have access to genetic testing, and even then, i'm not sure.

just eat more. it shouldn't be a problem. i wish i could post a thread on a forum with people yelling at me to eat more. i would in a heartbeat, no questions asked!
