Tiziki! Love it with my veggies.

  • 6oz plain yogurt
  • 1 cucumber
  • 3 cloves garlic (pressed through garlic press)
  • squirt of lemon
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • Black pepper to taste.

Just put everything except the cucumber into the yogurt, mix well. Slice the cucumber in half and de-seed with a spoon. With the small side of your cheese grater, grate the cucumber over a paper towel. Squeeze water out of the grated cucumber. Put the cucumber fibers into your yogurt mixture. Mix it up! And enjoy. For the best flavor, you should refrigerate it for 24 hours. Also works with greek yogurt. So low cal, and so full of flavor. I also use it as sandwich spreads and pita spreads.

PS: You can also buy one of those hidden valley ranch packets at the store and mix it with yogurt. that works well too. but give the tiziki a try.

Thanks! That sounds tasty, and easy! I'll give it a tryLaughing

Hello, I stumbled across this entry and I think you need to cut out grains from your diet and increase your protein and healthy fat intake, especially if you are trying to increase lean muscle mass. Grains cause an insulin rush in your body that retains fat and causes inflammation.

My information comes from the following site:

http://www.marksdailyapple.com/

Also, the more protein and fat you eat, the less hungry you'll feel and the less you will feel the need to eat. (I go over 14 hours without eating almost every day and my body doesn't care anymore. Even when I am hungry, it's more of a "Oh... okay... let's eat sometime soon" rather than the insane "I'm staaarving!"

Essentially, the way to burn fat and increase muscle is to cut down on foods with high glycemic loads and up the intake of foods with high protein value. This way you support muscle growth, but not fat.

Best of luck,

Thank you for your informative link! But I thought that an isulin rush only occured upon eating high glycemic carbs by themselves, or when you mix them with protein. Whole grains mixed with proteins and small amounts of fat ensure a slow increase in insulin, don't they? And I tried that before....I lost muscle, energy, and my immunity, plus I gained weight(fat)....I don't know what to think honestly. Half the population says carbs are the way to go, the other half say carbs are bad, don't eat them. I tried both approaches, and I like carbs more than no carbs, I'm just a little concered about what my calorie intake should be right now. ?????

Thanks. I was 120, but I'm very afraid to step on a scale right now. My goal is to build muscle for a few months, and then work on losing whatever fat I put on a few months before next summer. Bulk and cut. The amount of weight I can lift is dramatically increasing every workout, and that has never happened to me before, and all year I have been having bad sinus problems and no energy, plus lack of muscle growth so I think my body likes the additional calories. I was a size 1 or 0 and now my size 1 jeans are tight. I'm just thinking that I'll be able to manage my weight more efficiently after eating normal for a while. CC says about 2400 a day to maintain, but that scares the heck out of me. When I first started to increase, I was never hungry, and now my appitie has returned so maybe a slow increase?? I feel terribly fat.

I get the same feeling but what I realized was that it is not the alcohol, but what was in the drinks or what I ate while drunk.  Sugar causes the same body tenderness/bruising/inflammation for me and when I was drinking I would sometimes have sugary drinks and then I would over-indulge in sugary things while drinking (cookies, chocolate, etc.)  I used to think that it happened from certain types of alcohol because it didn't happen EVERY time I drank, etc.  After doing elimination diets and really paying attention to what I was drinking and what I ate each time, my doctor and I figured out that it is the sugar that does it to me, not the alcohol.  We had it narrowed down to gluten or sugar and I tested negative for gluten intolerance and didn't have a problem with the gluten elimination diet.  Now, if I drink too much I really have to watch what I eat in order to avoid the pain.  If I stay away from sugar then I'm okay.  I would try and see if you are affected by one type of alcohol as opposed to another (beer v. vodka v. wine, etc) and track what you eat while drinking... you maybe surprised!

Thats really funny...The last two times it happened was when I drank apple ciders! They have something like 30 or 40 grams of sugar per bottle, and I drank like, 7-8 over a long period of time (which was on vacation and I've learned never ever to do that again!) I took it easier the second time and only drank 3, and I was hurting the next day, but not as bad.. Beer is fine, wines ok too, but the ciders kill me! I thought it was because I drank so many and they are 7% each, but I think it definitely could be the sugar. Thank you for your insight! I will stay clear of sugar and sugary drinks from now on!!Smile

Weight Loss Heart Rate Monitor Sep 16 2009

I recently got a timex one for about $50. I bought it for the same reasons you want one. I wanted to know how many calories I'm burning and I wanted to see how hard I was exercising in my spin classes. When I started using it I was shocked that during the same class I would burn as little as 450 and as much as 750 on other days. I also burn 300 calories an hour lifting weights, which is more then calorie counter says I burn. I wish I had bought it sooner, and highly recommend it. I didn't buy a polar because I wanted to change the batteries myself and they mostly start at $100 for the same features I get in my Timex. The indigo light is a nice feature too. You'll want one with a chest strap if you want to use the heart rate monitor to count calories.

Ack! That looks really good for the price. I wish I could get one like that for so cheap. I don't think I could get a deal like that at the walmart in Newfoundland, though..Frown The cheapest one I can find here is about $90. Thats why I need peoples opinions-they are expensive!

Did you buy one from walmart that you liked? I'm still open to suggestions- they probably carry a few different brands. I'd still like to hear your opinion!Laughing

The reason I want one is because I do a lot of outdoor activity as well as weightlifting and I have no idea how much I am burning whille doing those activities. I would like to build muscle, and I know I need a calorie surplus, but I only need a small one. I want an estimate of roughly how much I am burning, so I can have some idea how much I should eat in order to build muscle, without gaining too much fat. I think I'll stay away from the walmart ones and invest my money in something good, if I do decide to purchase one.Laughing

So, using a heart rate monitor you are able to determine how many calories you are burning? Because that would definitely be worth the investment.

And c.c says I'd only burn 272 calories doing vigorous weightlifting for 50 mins. How would squating and lunging with an extreme amount of effort for an hour only burn that much?

I've been lifting for years now. Earlier this year I was doing a three-four day split, but I wanted to try something different. I find when I do two bodyparts at a time, I burn out before doing the second one, and therefore my efforts aren't as intense as with the first. I find that when I seperate the two body parts into two different workouts, I tend to go all out during both, with energy to spare-probably because in order to do this I have upped my calories a lot. I hate doing cardio, and have lots of time in the run of a day for physical activity (I'm in school full time, but doing college online) so I figured two weightlifting sessions would be funner than one weightlifting and one cardio. Plus I've read that the results are better-providing adequate rest is had during the day, and nutrition is right. Did you ever try this before? I'm having great success so far, just wondering if I should worry about ovetraining or if more rest would be better for growth.

Health & Support Frustrated with sinus problems Aug 30 2009

I don't ever get headaches very often though. Only about twice, or three times a month I get really severe head pain. I only got these glasses in January, and I've had no problems with them. I've had eye headaches like that in the past though, so I know what the pain is like. This is different, and predominatly in my nose when I breathe, which triggers pain in the base of my skull. I've had many sinus problems for two years now, regardless of whether or not the doctor can find anything, I can't ever breath through my nose, and have post-nasal drip. I'm just beside myself. I have to suffer because he doesn't believe me. When it gets really bad-like today (I know I have a bit of an infection) I feel like theres nothing I can do about it. I can't go to the doctor- he just throws anti-biotics at me and thats it. I don't want to be taking them all the time. I've been there 4 or 5 times this year already.

It could very well be a migrain...I never really thought of that one. That never used to happen to me before. Would a migrain be linked to pain breathing through your nostrils?? And I wear contacts/glasses so I don't think its eye strain. Good idea, though. Thanks so much for your responses. Maybe I'll invest in some migrain pills, and see if that works. Although there's nothing new in my diet, its quite possible. I'll monitor it more. Thanks again.

I appreciated your response. My problem is, though, sometimes the pain is so severe that inhaling anything causes me so much pain that I curl up in a ball and tears fill my eyes! Its brutal. I have a cortiosteroid that the doctor finally gave me, but it doesn't help, and when I try to take it on a day when my face and head already hurts, the pain cripples me. I even tried making a saline solution like the neti pot, but it was way to painful. It sent a shooting pain up my nostril, through my skull, right to the base of my skull, and felt like a cold, icy pain that lasted for hours. I swear, there is something not right about that! And the doctor is useless.

I use the Presidents Choice Organic oatmeal at the moment. I always use some kind of oats that cook in 3-5 minutes. I like the texture more.

My recipe?? Sealed Its: 2 egg whites, a splash of vanilla extract, 1/2 tsp of cinnamon, 1/2 a cup of oats, a small drop of milk (maybe a little less than a 1/4 cup), a few tbps of splenda, and 1/2 tsp baking powder. Mix it all in a bowl, adding the baking powder last, and then gently stir that in. Throw in on a pan (makes about 3 pancakes) and add some blueberries and some chopped strawberries!! MMMMmmmmmm......Its good too also to get some plain yogurt, and add some vanilla extract and splenda to it, and use it as a topping. Or, you could put some vanilla protein powder into the yogurt and use that. Very tasty. Its like eating dessert! I make meals like that so its easier to stick to a healthy diet. Its not hard if you love what you eat!

Ok, thanks! I'll have to drink a protein shake with my pancakes for the protein, then. My recipe only calls for 2 egg whites, hence the ham (for extra protein). I eat this meal quite often, and I`m convinced the ham made me retain a crap load of water. Thanks for the advice!!!

I have organic oatmeal?? Hey, what if you made pancakes out of oatmeal and egg whites, and added a few blueberries, and ate a ham slice with it. Ham slices have a lot of salt. Would this combination be bad for water retention ?? Reason being, I'm going on a vacation in a few days, so I would like to eliminate any water weight I can.

Aha! I found the answer to my question- Keytones are only produced on low carb diets, and calorie deficits will not cause you to excrete keytones if your carbs are high, depending on the person. I apparently would have to lower them in order for ketosis to kick in, 90-100 is not low enough. I'm not going to do that, nor am I going to waste my money on ketosticksSmile. I'll have to rely on my strength to determine whether or not my muscle is getting eaten, which I highly doubt it is. Yup.

No no no. I mean besides my once a week leg workouts, I've been doing cardio twice a day. Intense enough so that my legs are burning throughout the exercises...step-ups, skipping, jumping jacks, stationary bike, running, stuff like that. Its just that I'm lean everywhere else, except the backs of my legs!! I would just like them to be more toned, thats all.

Thanks a lot! I do resistance training 4 times a week, eat less than 100 carbs a day, but still have about 1 cup of oats and often 2 slices of w/w toast with a sandwich. I've been doing a lot more cardio lately after weight lifting in the morning and again in the afternoon, and always have a high carb day once a week, but I'm not progressing very fast. I'm concerned because I've been doing lots of leg-work, and they don't seem to be getting any leaner. I have ketosticks, so I wondered if I could track muscle loss/fat burning with them. Maybe I'm just crazy.

Yea, I know. Calorie deficits are what matters. But I was wondering if you have to eat low carb in order for keytones to be excreted. And the less bodyfat you have, the higher the chances are of burning muscle for feul.

Thats interesting. I wonder, do you have to be eating low carb for Ketosis to kick in?? What about eating under 100 carbs and eating 1300 calories??? I'd like to understand this a little more so I can keep track of things a little. I do not want to burn muscle. I know that if you eat a lot of protein you will preserve muscle when dieting and exercising, but you could eat 1300 calories worth of protein, which is a large amount of protein, but you could still be burning muscle if your calories are not high enough, right??

Burn the fat, feed the muscle says that if you gradually lower your intake, week by week, and get it down to a low calorie level, and keep it there for three days, your metabolism will not slow down if you incorporate a higher calorie day on the fourth day, as opposed to keeping it low for a long period of time. Thats what slows your metabolism. Keeping it low for a long time. Thats all I ment.

Of course, you don't do this forever, you should be eating more than that on a regular basis. Normally, calorie cycling like that is for quick weight loss for an occasion-I'm vacationing soon, so I need to drop a few pounds. You'd be better off eating 1500 calories a day, for a week, and then having a higher calorie day on the weekend.

Apparently you can go around three days of low calories before your metabolism starts to slow down. So, if you exercise and keep calories low for a few days before the weekend, and then have one higher calorie day, it will just boost your metabolism. Its like calorie cycling-3 low days, one high day. You can lose weight easier this way. Keep it in moderation though. I do 3 days of 1200 calories, and one day of 1800 calories. Low carb on the low days, higher carbs on the high day. I'm 23 years old, and I've been doing this for almost a week, and lost fat, but actually got stronger. Just keep the protein high. According to Tom Venuto, its how many bodybuilders lose weight pre-contest.
