Weight Loss How fast is too fast? Aug 30 2007

Judging by your last post, you are losing weight by not eating much.

This is NOT a healthy way to lose weight.  While you will have immediate results, the long term and unseen problems are so not making the quick results worth it.

You should aim to lose a CONTROLLED 1-2 lbs per week.  By controlled I mean in a healthy and safe way, with a balance diet and enough food.

Are those 1400 calories you eating before or after your exercise is factored in?

Eating 1400 and then working off 500 of those means you are at a net of 900 calories at the end of the day, which is not healthy at all.

Your problem is that you seem to look at it as a weight loss, a temporary change in diet to get down to a more comfortable weight level.

You need to change your mindset and look at it as a healthy lifestyle change.  Learn new ways to live, to eat and to drink that will enable you to have fun, go out, and not put the weight back on.  Having a few drinks once and a while is fine.  Having too many 5 times per week is not healthy.

Take a step back and evaluate why you are losing the weight, what you want out of it.  And make sure that you change your life habits while you are losing the weight.  Without changing those habits, the weight will come back on.

Learn once to be healthy, be healthy for your whole life

It is typically recommended to be around 50-55% Carbs, 20-25% fat and 20-25% protein.

And yes, the fiber is really low.  You should be at about 24g if you are a woman and 35g if you are a man.

Hmm...there was a library post about the Calorie-Count.com diet that HK did a while ago, doesn't seem to be here anymore.  It listed all the values you needed for each category

Well, knowing that 1200 is the minimum that is medically recommended  by doctors for all women, you should not go under this amount.

Are you eating 1200 and THEN running?  As in, you eat 1200, then run and burn off say 500, giving you a net of 700 calories?  If so, then that in itself is not healthy.  You need to hit your recommended daily calories as a NET at the end of the day, after exercise is factored in.

I would highly recommend upping your calories.

As for high calories snacks, I agree that you should not aim to fill the extra calories with chips and crap.  But making some small changes with healthy higher calorie foods will often make a nice difference.

What comes to mind is olive oil and nuts.  Adding 1 tbsp of olive oil to a sandwhich or salad gives you 100 extra calories, and they are almost all healthy calories.  Your body needs good fats and olive oil is full of it.  Same goes for nuts.  Not the ultra salted ones, but regular nuts.

Cycling your calorie intake is never a bad idea.  While you might still hit a plateau later on (there is no perfect cure for getting over those other than patience and determination), keeping your body guessing along the way is fine.

Don't get so stuck on the numbers.  Calories are not 100% exact.  I always suggest to aim for a range of calories and not a specific number.  Hit in the range and you are fine.

I typically set my range at 500-750 under my maintenance level, never going under my 1500 (I'm a man).

While feeling cold is often associated with your body going through changes during weight loss, heading to your doctor to get some blood work done is the best bet.  They will detect if you are deficient in any vitamins and such.

You can go to fast food places, but you still have to make healthy choices when you are there.

A BigMac trio will net you about 1200 calories.

Some of the salads are insanely high as well, mostly due to the dressing.  So ask for low fat - non fat dressing, or bring your own!

The fajitas at McDs are not that bad.

Skip the fries.  There is no nutritional value in the fries.

At Wendy's (my fave) ask for a Grilled Chicken sandwhich without the bread and a side salad.  Cut the breast up and put it in the salad.  WAY more chicken then their chicken salad.

Counting calories will get you to lose weight, yes.  But watching the rest of the stuff is what will make you healthy.

If you don't aim to be healthy, once you drop the weight, you will start slipping and going back to the old routine, and gain the weight back.  Aim to be healthy and happy, and if that includes a very occasional trip to fast food, fine.  Just make it healthy there to.

Yeah, the upage in the scale in going out with your dad was probably due to a high sodium content that you always get in food in restaurants.  They salt everything, probably to cover the bland tastes.

Higher sodium = water retention = higher weight on the scale.

But you are right, it is water weight.  Keep drinking your daily water and you should be fine.

As for the cheesecake place, why not have a talk with your mom-in-law to let her know the troubles with losing weight you have been having and how you are trying to put yourself on the right path, and how going to this place will not help you.

Tell her you want to spend time with her, but you would greatly appreciate going to a place with more healthy choices.

Then, order 1 cheese cake for dessert and split it between the two of you =)

I feel its very important to have good communication between you and your family about your plans.  Skipping it means isolating yourself, which is not good.  You need to have support from all sides and get everyone on board with it.

Weight Loss i have a question about bmr... Jun 08 2007
20:46 (UTC)

Your BMR is the amount of calories your body is burning when it is at total rest?ie you are in bed not moving type of thing.

What are your current stats? (height, weight, age, gender)

So on top of your BMR, you need to add daily exercise and moving around.  A sedentary level will yield a somewhat higher amount of calories needed to maintain your weight.  The more exercise you do, the more you need to eat.

But note that BMRs and caloric intake for kids and teens is usually higher than what a fully grown adult body needs.

If your BMR is 1600, I would say that eating 1200 is way too low, specially on days you exercise.  Burning off 500 calories on a 1200 calorie day means your net intake is 700.  This is 900 calories UNDER what your body needs if you were not moving at all.

If this is the case, not healthy at all.  I would highly suggest to talk to your doctor.

Nothing "really" works.  They are tools that should be used in a healthy living plan to make you lose weight.  No gimmicks will shed weight.

It comes down to regular exercise, healthy foods and portion control.  Any tool can be used to help in each of the areas, but all three areas need to be looked at to lose weight
Fitness Cubicle workout?? Jun 08 2007
17:59 (UTC)
There isn't much you can do in your cubicle during the day.  However, there are things you can do in the office to make sure you are being more active.

Try not to call people, get up and go talk to them.  Use email only when you need a written proof something was sent / said.  Drinks lots of water but have a smaller water bottle, making you take more trips to fill it up.

Take the stairs up, not the elevator or the escalator.

Keep good posture when sitting, straight back and all.  Make sure your office is ergonomic and has enough light to keep you working in a healthy way.

Take walks at lunch.  Eat and whatever for 30 mins and take a 30 min walk at a good pace, either outside or inside.  Invite others to take a walk with you.  Having company makes the walk go by faster.

I wouldn't be so quick to say that you will be just fine.  It all depends on what your current health level is, your current weight and your height.

Just because 1200 is a minimum does NOT mean that is a number to shoot for.

You need to find what the right amount is for you.

What are your stats?  1369 sounds like a low number.  I'm assuming that this is with little to no exercise?

Cutting down calories to the point of starving will not put weight on right away.  Your weight loss will suddenly stop and you won't know why.  You will not be healthy.  Nails will be brittle, hair will be thin.  After you are done freaking out, you will be told to eat more.  You will eat a more normal amount, at which point your body will store some of that as you have been starving it and it takes time for it to feel safe again.

Ok, that is a bit extreme, but you should get the basic idea.  Saying that eating too little will make you put on weight means that where you heard this is either giving out false information or that you didn't pay proper attention to what was said.

The most important thing is making sure you are eating the RIGHT amount of calories so your body to ensure that you lose weight in a healthy way.  Aiming for a minimum, or just above to make you think you are ok, may not be the right way to go.

Do it right the first time, even if it takes a bit longer.
Weight Loss Big thighs.. Do they go? Jun 08 2007

For starters, you are 15 years old.  Your body can still be growing.  So any advice / comments are not 100% accurate as your body will be changing on its own.

As far as adult bodies are concerned, people lose weight in different ways.  Some lose all on top, some all on the bottom, some all over.  An adult can end up losing alot of weight on top and still have somewhat bigger legs (or vice versa) as this is the way their body works.

Which is why it is SO important not to be overly worried about a stupid number on a scale, but focus more on healthy eating, portion control, regular exercise, and feeling mentally good.
Weight Loss Do you consider your BMR when adding/subtracting calories? Jun 08 2007
17:46 (UTC)
1
Not sure I get your question.  BMR means the amount of calories burned laying in bed and doing nothing all day.  Once you get up from bed, you are not at a BMR level.   Are you saying that exercise is added to your BMR?  So a BMR of 1300 and 300 calories of exercise = 1600?

So if you are aiming for 1500 calories, the same 300 calories means that you need to eat 1800?

If so, then that looks ok.

Again, your question / statement is not too clear

In order to establish what amount of calories you should be eating per day, you definatly need to take into account your BMR.  You can't just pick a number based on assumptions.

>>>and I assume that just by living a normal lifestyle, I burn 1300 (my personal BMR).<<<

A 5'6 woman at a healthy weight of 130 needs to eat 1650 calories per day with little to no exercise (slightly higher than their BMR).  So it all depends on your current height / weight.
Weight Loss I have been stuck for 2 weeks. Any advice? Jun 08 2007

Seems that you are doing the right things.  Exercising, eating right, eating enough.

Has your body changed size while the number stayed the same?  ie ? instead of using a scale, have you been measuring your body for physical changes?

You are on a plateau.  Sometimes, there is nothing but patience that will break a plateau.  Doing all the right things, I was on a plateau for 2 months, bouncing up and down a few lbs around the same weight.

So keep up with your healthy life style.  Keep working out.  Keep changing up your exercise and your foods.  The weight loss may have stalled (but it will start again), but keep in mind that each day you are healthier and healthier.

I know, not what you wanted to hear.
Weight Loss I had take-out twice today... Jun 08 2007

Your boyfriend's fast metabolism will catch up to him.  I'm assuming you are in your early 20s, so he would be as well.  I had a faster metabolism when I was that age.  I ate what I wanted.

Then when I grew up and started working full time, building a career, a family, a house and what not, I became less active and my metabolism slowed.  But my eating habits were sunk in pretty deep and I kept eating what I wanted to.

180lbs, 190lbs, 210lbs, 220lbs, 230lbs and 7 years later, I knew I had to do something.

Bodies changes all the time.  What we need are healthy eating habits to ensure that we can live a happy and healthy life with food at all stages of our lives.

Its ok to have take out food once and a while.  As long as 80% of the time, you are good.  The healthy habits you are creating will make you happier and healthier in the long run.  His rolling of eyes will ensure that he packs on the puge in a few years.
Weight Loss Protein Shakes(good or bad?) Jun 07 2007
20:44 (UTC)

Protein shakes are a good way to suppliment your daily protein intake.  They are not a weight loss solution.

True weight loss and health comes with a mix of exercise and healthy eating, of which protein shakes are a tool.

If you find that you are not consuming enough protein, then go with the shakes.  Personally, I prefer to get my protein from the foods that I eat.

Its the same logic as vitamins and other pills.  Its a huge business, so they keep pushing the importance of getting your suppliments.  But if you are eating a balanced and healthy diet, you should not need any extra suppliments.

How much protein do you consume on an average day?
Weight Loss Need your Advice. Jun 07 2007

In order to be fit and healthy, I believe you need a mix of both cardio and weight training.   Doing only cardio cardio cardio is a great start and will defiantly help with your weight loss and overall fitness, but a mix of the two is the best way to go.

Just as eating a variety of greens, getting your protein from a variety of sources, doing a variety of exercise is also a great idea.  That means different types of cardio and different types of strength training.
Weight Loss How much is too much? Jun 07 2007
19:34 (UTC)
1
The average is 1.5 lbs per week.

3 months = 12 weeks

12*1.5 = 18 lbs

So yes, I would consider 40 lbs pretty fast.  However, numbers can be different for different people.  If you are very overweight and have made drastic and HEALTHY changes, then you could lose alot more.  Going from 350 eating McDonalds 3x per day and no exercise to 310 eating healthy foods and exercise might be possible.

Going from 220 to 180 in 3 months sounds quick.

If you are cutting your calories too much, then you are potentially starving your body.  When people starve their bodies, and they decide to be healthy and eat healthy, then typically do gain some weight back temporarily as their body gets used to a regular food intake.  There is nothing is immediate in weight loss.

Another issue of cutting too many calories is the loss of muscle, which can be unhealthy.  Personally, I didn't exercise much and lost a good deal of muscle in my first few months, but this was planned.  I then had to work harder to gain it back.

You might want to speak to your doctor about such a sudden weight loss.  Not saying its not normal for you (although I know many people who it would not be normal for), but if its worrying you, talk to a professional to get a full evaluation.  THere are too many factors involved for people on an internet posting forum to give a 100% accurate diagnostic

Its not the amount you lose that makes it come back quickly, its how you lost it...both the methods used and the frame of mind you were in.

Losing alot of weight quickly often has a result of loose / saggy skin as the skin didn't have time to shrink back to its normal self

You should keep with a higher amount of calories.  As you said, this place?s tools are for adults.

If you have questions or concerns about your health, you should discuss these with a family doctor as they are more aware of your needs than we are.

But 1190 is defiantly too low for you, and even more so on a day you exercise THAT much
