Um...maybe 45 minutes? Just give them a little taste--if they are soft and not crunchy, then they're done. Sorry I can't be of more help!! |

I've definitely felt a little disoriented after a run--but it usually goes away after a few minutes. I don't usually run on the treadmill more than 30-40 minutes, though. Your body just has to adjust to not being on the treadmill anymore. |

You may try looking at this page on Runner's World and see if any of it matches what you're experiencing. Other than that, you might just want to see your doctor--injuries aren't fun, but they get worse when they aren't treated. Good luck! |

| Foods | What should I buy to put together a good vegetrarian salad for myself? | Apr 01 2008 22:19 (UTC) |

Right now, I've been eating salads of mixed greens with pecans, dried cranberries, and feta cheese. I like the little bit of extra flavor--and I don't use dressing usually. Other things that are yummy on salads: sunflower seeds, sprouts, other veggies (grated carrot, cucumber, etc), fruit (apples, strawberry), cottage cheese, beans, I really like to eat lots of things on salads, hehe. Lettuce is a great base for much tastiness. |

Actually, it's from Michael Pollan's In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto, which is really good (as is his Omnivore's Dilemma). |

| Foods | Can't stop comparing myself !!!! | Mar 31 2008 21:02 (UTC) |

Comparing yourself is always a bit dangerous. Your body's needs are likely different than others around you. Also, at 13, your food requirements are going to be different than an adult's because you are growing/changing, etc. Your body is simply going to process food differently than someone who is done growing. Listen to your body. If you are not overeating and if you are truly hungry, then eat a snack. Pick something healthy (fruit, nuts, etc) and eat in moderation. And try hard not to compare yourself to the people around you!! |

If I were you, I'd try to avoid anything super processed. Granola bars (Kashi are my favorite--whole grains, no HFCS) are all right in a pinch--but they can be a little calorie dense and full of sugar. Beware the processed food that looks healthy--be sure to read labels and choose wisely (a good rule of thumb in my opinion is the longer the ingredient list, the worse it is for you). jef's idea is good--dried fruits and nuts. Portion them out into smaller (reusable) containers for a quick snack. Be careful here too--some companies sweeten dried fruit with HFCS. |

Hehe... I had a similar experience--my collar bones just pop out like crazy now. The funniest one was when I found my hip bones--I kept running into things and it would hurt, since there wasn't any fat padding them any more. Ouch! (But cool too--I'm such a klutz, hehe). Good work! |

Ooh, good luck! I failed twice before passing. I got so nervous with the officer in the car that I freaked out and did stupid things. On my final (and successful!) try, I just took deep breaths and talked to him about school, my future plans, etc. It helped me stay calm and not spazz out. Good luck... |

When I first started losing weight in college, I would record Denise Austin's sunrise workout (I don't remember the exact name--just that it was on at 5:30 am, so there was no way I was waking up that early!) and do it at some point during the day. It was a 20-minute workout, but it was a great way to start working out without going to the gym. Some sites, like Yoga Today, have a daily workout you can download and follow along too. If videos are not your cup of tea, there are exercises involving all sorts of things like the exercise ball, yoga, etc, that are easy to do in your room. I've also noticed, however, that people are rarely looking around during their workout--they are too busy trying to finish that last mile! Perhaps once you've healed up and feel more fit from doing dorm-room workouts you'll feel like venturing to the gym. |

I was 21, and it was with my first real boyfriend, who I am still with. I had some offers before that...but I'm glad I waited! It's a pretty funny story, actually. Me: Blah, blah, blah [chatters nervously]. *Quiet* Boy: Ah, there's that pause I was waiting for...*kiss* Me: *Internally freaking out* I've never been kissed before!! It was cute and sweet--I kept chattering, and he just kept waiting for me to shut up so he could just kiss me. So, if you're young, don't worry if you don't get kissed at the age of 13 or 14 or even 17 or 18--relax, and hopefully it'll be great when it happens! |

| As long as the carbs you're cutting are the highly processed, sugary, nutrient-less carbs, then you'll be fine--but, by all means, don't cut out whole grains! And fruits! I'm a big fan of whole grains: brown rice, quinoa, whole wheat bread, etc. I tried once to do South Beach and cut them all out for the first two weeks and I felt terrible--and it's because I don't eat the processed stuff. I made it three days, then I decided I couldn't do it. Cutting out everything with carbs is bad for your health. | |||

Just take it one day at a time--you know you can do it because you've done it before. If you slip up, just take a breath, concentrate on your goal, and keep on working toward it. Good luck! |

| Weight Loss | Fasting for Lent [religous season]... want to give up meat... need suggestions... | Jan 30 2008 22:39 (UTC) |

The first time I gave up meat, I had a hard time too--lightheaded, constantly hungry, etc. I discovered that I was eating too many carbs and not enough proteins and fat that keep us satisfied. I also think that sometimes when you switch to a meatless diet, your body has to adjust to it, so it "complains". I currently eat a vegetarian diet about 75%-80% of the time (I eat meat maybe once a week or so) and I have no problems anymore. I'd recommend the Gardenburgers--tasty. I've heard that some of the fake chik'n nuggets are really good, but I tend to avoid most "meat-like" products, even though I do like a Boca burger patty every now and then. Things like eggs, tofu, and beans combined with rice or corn give you complete protein that you find in meat, and are satisfying and healthier--they have lots more fiber than meat for sure! One favorite dish of mine is black bean enchiladas--made like normal, but replace the ground beef with a black bean/rice mixture. We've also added in spinach to the mix before stuffing, and it's delicious (esp. with cheese on top!) Definitely filling and tasty for the whole family. Good luck with giving up meat for Lent--it'll be hard at first, but you can do it. |

I agree with Bittman, and with another person who writes for the NY Times: Michael Pollan (author of the new book, In Defense of Food). They don't want everyone to become vegetarians (unless you want), but to make meat a minor part of one's diet. It's better for the earth and better for your health. Part of the problem is that we should be eating food this is a.) produced locally, b.) produced without the use of petroleum. So by buying a McDonald's hamburger, the beef used in that burger had to be shipped to McDonald's...but before that, it was fattened on grain that was produced using petroleum-based fertilizers, then shipped to the feed lot, then... It really goes on and on. Sooner or later, we're going to have to realize that eating meat with every meal is bad for all parties involved, that meat should be a luxury to be eaten a few times a week at most, and that the largest part of meals should be vegetable based. One problem I have with a lot of diets is the emphasis on "protein", and when people say protein, they mean meat. Protein-deficiency is rarely a problem (unless you're an athlete), and protein exists in many grains and plants: legumes, whole grains, seeds, etc. You don't have to eat a diet high in protein if you're eating lots of vegetables. I'll end with Pollan's words: "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants." |

I can see how the Pill could make you gain weight--when I started taking a stronger dose of it, it made me extremely emotionally unstable, thus prone to over-eating/emotional eating and not wanting to exercise. I was, in fact, a basket case. My own experience was that it could lead to a small amount of weight gain initially, but after my body adjusted, I was fine. The big thing there is that every woman's body reacts differently to prescriptions. I'm wondering, holiday_mouse, did you try a lower dosed pill, like Ortho tricyclen-lo or a similar brand? Sometimes that helps out with things like weight gain/moodiness, etc. And certainly congratulations on the weight loss. |
