Original Post by digigirl: I just ran across this thread again today and discovered I had answered this way back in January when I first started dieting! A little blast from the past! So here's a little update: Since then, I've lost 35 of my 50 pound weight loss goal. Here are the new stats: Bust: 36 with only an A cup. Sigh. (previously 39 with a C cup) Although I haven't hit my goal of losing 50 pounds yet, I've been on a plateau for the last couple of months, which I realize is totally normal and usual. So I've kinda been thinking I'd just go into maintenance mode until after the holidays then get back on the losing track next year. My BMI went from 30.7 (moderately overweight) to 24.7 (healthy weight). My body fat has dropped from 35% to 25%. I've lost a total of 29.8 inches over my entire body and went from a size 12 to a size 6. I'm definitely a zillion times happier, healthier and feeling better now than I was 35 pounds ago! I still have work to do, but I feel like I can take my time getting there. I finally broke down and got some new clothes and even made a drastic hair change (had hair down to my butt, now it's just below my shoulders and layered), all for the better. Everyone at work tells me I look 10 years younger! Anyway, thanks for listening. It was just a little reminder to myself when I ran into my old post of how much I've changed this year. I still don't have the tiny waist and big busts that many of y'all have, but at age 42, I'm feeling pretty good anyway. :) Valerie

Original Post by jessiemccrory: The different flavors don't all have the same amount of fiber - according to their website, the Original flavor has 28 grams per cup, Honey Clusters 13 grams per cup, Raisin Bran clusters 11 Grams per cup and the Caramel Delight 9 grams per cup. But even that is a lot more than most other cereals and a way to add some more into your diet. To help keep the calories low and give yourself room to have more cereal, or something else to keep you full, use Unsweetened Almond Breeze for milk (you can get vanilla flavor or just plain). Once it is chilled and poured on your cereal, you can't tell the difference between it and regular milk. If you drink it by itself, you can faintly taste the almond flavor, but it's very mild. It's a lot less calories than milk! I like the Fiber One yogurts, too. They have 5 grams per serving. And I eat the Chewy bars for snacks all the time - 9 grams per bar. But it doesn't have to all be Fiber One products. If you start reading and comparing labels on everything you buy, after a while, you'll have your pantry all stocked up with higher fiber items and next thing you know you're hitting your fiber goal without even trying! |

Original Post by jessiemccrory: I've tried the Fiber One Raisin Bran Clusters and Caramel Delight and found them both very tasty. No different in taste or texture than any other cereals. The Raisin Bran tastes basically like raisin bran and the Caramel Delight is a lot like Golden Grahams. Even the Pickiest Eater In The World (my boyfriend's teenaged son) will eat them - and he won't eat ANYTHING that is healthy (he just doesn't know these are). |

Original Post by avg1333: I have a friend who is a biology professor who recently told me that there is new research (not yet published to the public) that indicates that after losing 10-15% of your body weight - which you definitely have - it is normal, and should even be expected, to have an extended plateau. Apparently, the body needs time to reset itself to the new parameters, endocrinologically speaking. She said the plateau can last anywhere from just a couple of weeks to several months. So, it may just be that your body needs to get used to the new size before you can go forward again. Don't get discouraged - you're not doing anything wrong - you're body is just working on itself on the inside right now! Just keep plugging away, knowing that you are establishing and cementing good, healthy habits and eventually your body will get settled into these new parameters and then you'll start to lose weight again. Whatever you do - don't give up!

Original Post by mollymouser: Heroes!! I may have to record it to watch it since I am currently working two jobs, but that's the only one I care about. Not that much of a TV watcher, but that one I like (plus Food Network is kinda my go-to background). Original Post by mollymouser: My ears are super picky - they only like solid gold. If I wear any other kind my ears get all red and irritated. So I haven't worn any earrings in ages. Rings end up bugging me and since I got divorced, I only wear them when I'm getting dressed up. Necklaces give me headaches (boy, am I wussy, or what?). I used to wear ankle bracelets and I do like regular bracelets, but have just gotten out of the habit of wearing them. Now that I've lost some weight and am just getting started working on a new wardrobe, I intend to get a few bracelets and other accessories. May try some necklaces too if they are very light. No piercings or tattoos, but thinking of getting a "tramp stamp" on my lower back. Just have to find a design I really like!

Original Post by mollymouser: Have been through many earthquakes, as I was born and raised in California. Never had anything bad happen to me because of them, though. Now that I'm in Texas, we evacuated for Rita a few years ago, but that ended up being a non-event in our area. Now we've got Gustav possibly coming this way but they're saying it's going towards New Orleans instead, now. In any case, even if a Cat 5 hits Houston, we won't evacuate - where we are is well beyond the evacuation area even for a Cat 5. So we'll just batten down the hatches and wait it out. Here's hoping Gustav ends up being a non-event, too (for everyone)! |

Original Post by mollymouser: Peanut butter - both! Depends on the usage. Chocolate - both! Depends on the usage. Chocolate is my latest obsession! In a good way. I am learning how to make fine chocolates - truffles, dipped and molded, etc. Love playing with chocolate! Sodas - RC is my usual go to, but Coke / Pepsi are interchangeable as well. NO DIET drinks for me, I think they're vile. I'd rather just have less of the real thing than try to choke down that poison they call diet soda. |

Original Post by mollymouser: My favorite thing about Christmas really is finding and/or making gifts for everyone. I've already started working on some things and love to present a really beautiful gift that shows that thought went into every aspect, from the color of the bow, the type of wrapping, the shape of the box, to whatever is inside. I don't always achieve what I aim for, but I try! And then, of course, there's all the yummy food! This will be my first holiday season after having lost 35 or so pounds, so it will be a challenge to indulge without undoing all my hard work! |

Howdy group! I'm following Molly from the Summer Countdown thread to this Fabulous Fall thread. I started dieting in January of this year and have lost about 34 pounds so far. Just in the last two weeks, my scale has crept back up a pound, which seems impossible since my calories have still been in the deficit, so I'm wondering if a plateau is hitting (ugh). I only have about 16 or so pounds to go to hit my main goal of 120 pounds, and it's getting harder and harder as I get closer. My goals for Fall: 1. Lose that last 16 pounds! 2. Start exercising more. So far, I've lost weight primarily by watching my calories, but I can tell that my metabolism has decreased and I don't want to be having to constantly be a nazi about food, so I need to build a good exercise habit, get the metabolism up so I can be a little more free. Plus, even though I'm a lot skinnier than I used to be, I'm still flabby. Need to tone! It seems like I've been doing this for a long time, even though I know I haven't been doing it as long as some others. But I'm close enough to my goal that I am just so ready to be done! I want to get into maintenance before the Holidays if at all possible. Valerie |

Original Post by mollymouser: My original goal had been to hit my main goal of 120 by the end of August. However, I hit a plateau over the last 6 weeks or so, and just last week finally lost a little more, so I've still got 19 pounds to go. I'm okay with that, though, because as previously stated, the plateau is a normal thing due to the weight I've already lost, so I just keep reminding myself that I'm not doing anything wrong - my body just needs to reset. I started a second job a few weeks ago, too, so now I'm pretty much working all the time. The upside is that the part time job is much more physical, so it helps me burn calories and is very busy so I don't have time to snack. The downside is that I also don't have time to, and I'm very tired when I do have any time off so am not motivated to, work out. At this point, not much I can do to kick it up a notch. Just keeping on, keeping on. Probably won't lose 19 pounds in the next month (wouldn't THAT be nice), but that's okay. I know that the fact that it's getting harder and slower now just means I'm getting closer and closer to my goal. I'll get there! |

Original Post by mollymouser: ICE CREAM!! Ice cream is my very favorite food in the whole world. If I had to choose just one dessert that I could only have for the rest of my life, it would be ice cream. Even the whole time I've been dieting, I have had ice cream nearly every single day. My usual ice cream fix is just plain ice cream or just plain with some fruit i.e., plain chocolate or plain vanilla with some berries, that sort of thing. I also enjoy fudge bars and ice cream sandwiches. I do like banana splits, but only have one in a blue moon and prefer to make them myself. I love the banana and some hot fudge and caramel, but am not big on strawberry or pineapple sauces (love fresh fruit, hate fakey-sauces). Whipped cream and nuts are of course required, but maraschino cherries are the work of the devil. Although, obviously, premium ice creams can't be beat, there are some pretty darn good low fat and even fat free ice creams out there right now that work very well to satisfy my addiction. I have found that the Breyer's fat free double churn ice cream is very creamy and delicious and is only 90 calories per half cup. Blue Bunny makes a yummy fat free Brownie Sundae one with swirls of hot fudge and stuff but it doesn't agree with me - I think maybe it has one of those funky fat substitutes in it - so I've stopped buying it (your mileage may vary). Skinny Cow and Weight Watchers both have pretty decent ice cream sandwiches and there's a whole host of good low cal fudge bars out there. I even like fat free and low fat frozen yogurts. You picked my favorite topic for this question! I love ice cream!! |

Original Post by southern_midwife: Trying new (or old "new") clothes is a great way to emphasize how much weight you've lost. Isn't it fun? All of my clothes are hanging on me and I have to belt my pants way in - they look silly! But I don't have much money right now, and I still have 20 pounds to lose, so I'm trying to buy only the *bare* minimum until I get to my goal. I don't want to (and can't afford to) have to replace my wardrobe twice! Midwife - be sure to tell us how you get your arms firm! I have ALWAYS hated my upper arms, even when I was young. They have definitely slimmed down with the rest of me over the last few months, but they still look out of proportionally thick (I think I just collect fat there) and are less firm than I want them to be. I've tried doing weights and stuff and nothing seems to help. So if you find a good technique for getting that part to look good, I'm all ears!

| Ooh, I hear you Molly! I can't stand how some people treat animals. Have you ever watched Animal Cops on the Animal Planet? I can't watch it anymore because of all the horrible things they find - it just makes me so angry. You are so sweet to take care of Marsha Mellow. She's a lucky kitty that she found your house! We have a dog, 3 cats and 4 ferrets - all adopted, not purchased, and they're spoiled rotten. I just don't understand how someone can get an animal, then mistreat it or (just as bad) totally neglect it. There are places you can take animals if they don't fit in your life anymore, so they can find a loving home. Don't just abandon them!!! Arrgh! |

Original Post by mollymouser: 1. Take the pressure off of yourself - there is no deadline for losing weight or getting healthy. As long as you are working the right direction, it doesn't matter how long it takes. You are building habits for a new lifestyle, not running a race. Even if you only lose 1 pound in 3 months, that's still 1 pound less than you weighed before (I remind myself of this often, because like us all, I get bummed out when the weight loss slows down)!
3. Read labels! Learn what they mean and what you are putting into your body. You can make some big differences in your diet just by reading the labels on store bought products and choosing wisely. 4. Plan ahead until you get the habits built. Plan out your meals, including snacks, for a while until you have established some good habits and learned what you can eat that will fit within your goals. If you just "grab and go," you're likely to sabotage yourself. If you plan ahead and make sure you have appropriate foods available when you need them, after a while you will have a better idea of what types of food you should be eating, as well as appropriate portion sizes, and will know how to make better choices on the fly. 5. Try new things. There's lots of great food out there, and some of it is more filling, less fattening and better for you than others. Try them! Find the things that help you reach your goals while still feeling satisfied. Healthy eating shouldn't be about depriving yourself, it's about learning how to eat in a way that makes you happy AND keeps you healthy. |

Original Post by mollymouser: All of those stupid diets out on the market! Some of the girls at work were talking to me one day about the weight I've lost, and one girl started talking about the "Grapefruit Juice" diet she did a while back. "Lost 15 pounds, isn't that great? It really works!" Uh huh. Yeah right. Substitute whatever fad is currently the rage in place of "Grapefruit Juice Diet" and it applies. When are people gonna realize those diets are only short term solutions? For real, lasting weight loss and maintenance, we gotta eat right and exercise. I just don't think there's any other answer. Sheesh. |

But, now we're going to have to put it off. We just can't justify spending that kind of money without knowing how long he will be out of work. Sigh. |

| Congrats home4ed! Great work! You're an inspiration. I almost forgot! Good thing I saw your post! Starting weight: 170 Goal weight: &n bsp;   ; 120 Current weight: &n bsp; 143 This week's change: +1 what!? Very disappointing. The scale says I gained a pound. How is that possible? My calories were well within my deficit goals. It IS the TOM, but I haven't had gains during that time in the past. In fact, so far, TOMs have been my best losing weeks. Have I hit the dreaded plateau? The numbers, though, look pretty good. I got the sodium down, the saturated fat down, even the sugar down a little. Unfortunately, the fiber's down a little too. Hmm. Very discouraging. Exercise goals - only worked out a couple of times. It's always especially hard during my TOM. I know I should work out anyway, but I talked myself out of it several days this past week. With my sudden GAIN (ugh), I plan to change up my workout routine anyway. Instead of doing cardio every day, I'm going to alternate cardio one day, strength training the next. Maybe adding some muscle will increase the metabolism and kick in some more weight loss. Keeping fingers crossed! |

Melly, glad to hear your plateau has broken, but I think it came to me instead! Last week I only lost half a pound and this week the scale said I GAINED pound, which I find hard to believe, since I'm still averaging less than 1500 calories a day! So, the dreaded plateau may be here. Ugh. Keeping my fingers crossed that it's just "one of those weeks" and I'll see a loss next Wednesday. Valerie |

Original Post by mollymouser: Well, this doesn't really count as "wish you hadn't eaten" because I'd almost certainly do it again, but it does make me feel a little guilty. Yesterday, it just accidentally worked out that I had hardly any calories by the end of the day and had already had breakfast, lunch and dinner. I had made some brownies for my boyfriend and since I had a WHOLE BUNCH of calories left for the day, I made myself a dessert with 3 small brownies and a couple of scoops of fat free ice cream (Breyer's Double Churn vanilla - yum!). It was well within my normal calorie goals for the day - even a little low really. But it still makes me feel a little guilty just because I haven't done anything like that in such a long time! Yes, it was very yummy. :) |

Original Post by mollymouser: I have always taken a daily multi-vitamin. I find that whenever I stop (usually because I run out), I immediately catch a cold, so it must be doing something. Also, when I'm not taking vitamins, I get lots of hang nails. Weird, huh? I also take Cranberry Extract supplements daily. I have always been really prone to UTIs (not fun) and don't really enjoy drinking cranberry juice. Haven't had a UTI since I started taking the supplements (over a year now). Yay! I just recently started taking an additional calcium / vitamin D supplement daily on my doctor's advice. I am 41 and menopause could hit anytime, so she said now is the time to start loading up on it to get the bones strong and avoid any osteoporosis issues. Also, if it turns out I do have rheumatoid arthritis (still waiting for news back on my test results), it will be even more important. So all of that, in addition to my blood pressure meds, cholesterol meds, birth control and low dose aspirin (heart disease runs in the family), I take HANDFULS of pills every day! Oh joy. Valerie |

| Hang in there home4ed! Sometimes it seems like our bodies just aren't cooperating, doesn't it? But usually I find that after I've had a disappointing week or two, the next week after that is a really good one. Just get right back on the horse and you'll be back on track. Just cutting down on wine might help a lot - those calories can add up quick. Here's my report for this week: Starting weight: 170 Goal weight: &n bsp; 120 Current weight: 142 This week's loss: .5 lbs Calorie goals: This week I was under my calorie goals about half the days and over about half the week (although still below maintenance). As you can see, I only lost .5 pounds, so obviously those "over" days added up. Water goals: Same as last week. Exercise goals: My current goal is to do cardio 4 days a week and strength training twice a week. I did do some weights one day this week despite still not hearing from the doctor about the possible arthritis. Only did cardio twice though. The weirdest thing is that consistently since I started dieting, I lose the least weight on the weeks I work out the most. And sure enough, the past week was no exception. So on Wednesday and Thursday of this week, I was feeling tired and cranky (TOM), so I skipped out. I know I should exercise anyway, but just wasn't motivated. Not a great week, but any loss is a good thing. Keeping on! Valerie |
