It can be frustrating when you've been putting in the work and making all the right decisions but you don't see the sort of rewards you expected. Trust me, I've been there done that! The trick is to keep going in spite of the needle on the scale refusing to budge (or even going the wrong way). Still there are some factors to think about.

Have you calculated your recommended daily calorie intake with your exercise regimen included? Undercutting the amount of calories you need for a day could shut your metabolisim down and result in you not seeing the weight losses you desire. You may want to check out the tools section of the CC site just to make sure you're not under-doing it.

Also if you're building muscle you're adding weight to your body - good weight but still weight. I found (personally) that if I really get into muscle building exercise it's hard to rely on the scale as my only gage of progress. That said I don't think there is a wrong sort of exercising. If you're building muscle or doing cardio you're getting healthier and that is the end goal, right? Well, getting healthier and looking great in a swim suit!

LOL! Had to laugh at the list - my personal most hated would be the individual who talks on the cell phone while occupying a machine for the entire...long...drawn out...duration of their call or actually has a heated discussion with whoever's on the other end of the line. Like I need to hear your personal business...heck, I don't so much like working out, the last thing I need is ANOTHER reason not to like it! :)

As for the books - I envy those who can read and walk the treadmill/ride the bike/climb the stairs. Personally I tend to walk off the edge of the treadmill and end up on my face!

Eating healthy is definately a journey and not a destination - and every road's got a few pot holes, right? ;) So, you hit a buffalo chicken flavored hole...just keep driving!

It's also important to realize that some people are writing in a second language here on CC. In my experience that sometimes leads to strange, nearly right, word choices. Also the post reply function doesn't have a spell/grammar check option - something that might help those who are given to miscues.

I'm not sure if your plan is actually 'unhealthy', rjong. It always was my belief that spreading meals out over the day (6 small meals or whatever) helped avoid the feeling of being 'starving' when meal time comes around and, therefore, makes it easier to avoid over eating at meal time. I took a look at my own (admittedly spotty) food logs and found that I tend to take in far more calories at lunch time than any other meal (1900+ kcal's at lunch, <300 kcals for other meals) so maybe I'm following the same model you are!

Just remember - don't truly go into starvation mode or you'll wind up killing your metabolisim and not losing weight! Nothing like all the pain and no benefit, huh? :)

Weight Loss Is counting calories REALLY worth it? Jan 04 2007
11:38 (UTC)

Just an observation - if you log on religeously for four or five days, lose five pounds, stop logging on, and then gain the same five back...isn't the answer in the question? :) When you log on (and therefore control your caloric intake), you lose - when you don't (and eat whatever you want) you gain. That would say if you're bent on losing that 15 pounds, it's really worth it!

Another thing to think on is maybe the perception is the problem? I mean if you go into this thinking 'I hate having to log on and counting every calorie I consume' you're taking a kind of negative track. Maybe you can think more along the lines of 'I love the fact I've been able to loose x-pounds' or 'I'm going to love the fact that I set a goal and obtained it' or something that you really want out of your weight loss plans? What was your original motivation? Maybe you can focus on obtaining that instead of what you don't like about the process.

I'm with everyone else - it's hard to know if they do/don't help! I take One-A-Day Weight Smart for men and I haven't noticed anything significant. EGCG can't hurt, I guess. Mainly taking a vitamin was my focus!

Foods Why am I craving Coffee? Jan 03 2007

Being a lover of Starbucks I sympathize - I always try to remember that there's very little difference between drinking a Starbucks Venti Moca and drinking a milk shake! It's kind of a substitute for a candy bar or any other sweet that you've been denying yourself as you work on your weight loss program. For me (at Starbucks) you can get around this (somewhat) by going down the twenty-coffee-adjective rout: Tall non-fat cappuccino with two pumps sugar-free vanilla (or caramel or whatever other sugar-free flavor) syrup. In case you cant do that at your favorite coffee spot, I'd recommend flavored bean coffees, non-fat creamer, and splenda!

Weight Loss Is this allowed? Can I do this? Jan 03 2007
11:18 (UTC)

Hmm - ya know, I know in the Weight Watcher's world (when I did that system) they allowed you to 'bank' points (essentially calories) for use later. I would say that you can to some extent - as long as you don't go too far (no banking 1000 calories for that Burger King trip!).

Weight Loss what to choose? Jan 03 2007
11:15 (UTC)

Definately some good advice from our fellow CC'ers - I'd agree, it's fine to have a slice (or two) of thin crust, meat-less pizza - some places have something called a taco pizza which usually comes with chopped tomato, cheese, ground beef, and (sometimes) lettuce on a thin crust. If you leave the ground beef off and ask for the pizza place to go light on cheese this would be a good option. Otherwise I think the key is to remember you can dictate what goes on your pizza or salad, don't be shy about asking the place to leave off stuff that you don't want to pay the caloric price for (even on a heavy salad you can ask to leave the cheese and meat off and opt for light dressing given to you on the side instead of already on the salad).

Good luck with your lunch out!

I've been reading Clive Barker's Books of Blood but I've gotten bogged down a bit with some of the stories in the collection. I'm probably going to jump into a collection called Golden Age of Science Fiction shortly.

Jeesh - I feel so frivolous in my reading by comparison! Do like De Lint though!

Trader Joe's is pretty cool - lots of variety, things that are hard to find anywhere else. I didn't know they were considered a health food store though - they have a huge cheese section for a health food place! My fav still is Wild Oats, though - even more selection!

I've had the DC monkey on my back for a long time - but I have lowered my intake. I used to do 2 twenty-packs a week now I'm down to a can a day. BTW, I do Diet Sprite or Sprite Zero too but I try to keep that down due to the fact its caloric content is higher (not sure how that works but on the CC site it shows the caloric content of a Sprite Zero higher than that of a Diet Coke).

Anywho, I'd suggest trying to taper off - maybe one in the morning, one at lunch, and one at night? Sub in decaffinated soda in between and try Fruit2o too, it's pretty tasty.

I'd agree with Zeke on the salt angle - it's highly likely you're seeing water retained due to eating foods with a lot of sodium in them. Increase your water intake and get back to the less processed, lower sodium foods and you'll see the weight drop again. Just don't let it get ya down!

Yah, definately seems random! The first places I lost weight were my fingers (rings don't fit), face, and chest. Two of those were desirable but I'm already small framed so having thinner fingers wasn't particularly on my agenda! However, I can tell when my body is retaining water!
