Hey Twiggy!

You're doing much better with the protein!  Your meal plan looks pretty good.  Cut back on the carbs and add a little more protein and that should do it.  You're doing great!

Ok, when you find me I'll force you to drink green tea! :-)

Finding the right foods is all about trial and error.  My nutritionist asked me lots of questions about my life style and suggested  a food plan for me to follow.  There is nothing that I do not eat.  I admire you for being able to cut out processed foods, I have not been able to do that, but I try to eat whole grains and foods that are low in added sugars.   Try seeing a nutritionist for a food plan.  There may be one at your gym.

No, you won't look like a she man! :-)  We all need muscle mass to stay lean and healthy.  As we get older, good muscle tone will keep us looking young and sexy.  With the proper strength training routine, you'll be long and lean, not big and bulky and you'll also strengthen your bones so you won't be all stooped as you age.  Light weight, high reps is generally the guide line, but ask a certified personal trainer for some tips.  Tell him/her that you want to be lean and ask for a serious of exercise.

I know getting older is the last thing you want to think about, but how you treat your body now has a real effect on your later health.  Looking thin and sexy is great, but don't neglect your nutrition.  I've been working with a nutritionist to help me make better food choices and I don't know why I waited so long to get help.  It's fantastic!  I feel better, but I'm not over my bad habits yet.  Work in progress.

Oh, you don't have to quit drinking cold turkey.  A beer or glass of wine or two over the weekend won't do too much harm.  But watch out for the mixed drinks that have lots of sugar in them.  They can pack on the pounds (been there, done that).  Everything in moderation.  I'm sure you're just as much fun without the drinking!  :-)

Hey Twiggy,

Binge drinking on the weekends isn't going to help you even if you don't drink during the week.  There are lots of empty calories in alcohol and you could be reversing a week of good work in just two days!  Personally, I'd rather eat my calories than drink them.  Plus, excess alcohol just isn't healthy.

Also, try to add some more cardio to your gym routine.  Since you're already doing 90 minutes a session, try doing a 45/45 split.  Cardio is key to fat burning.

Since you don't eat meat or fish, are you sure you're getting enough protein?  The Butternut soup sounds delicious, but there's not much protein in it.  Protein is key to good muscle growth.

I think you'll see some positive changes if you a) limit the booze to an occasional cocktail and b) add some more cardio to your routine.

Happy Holidays!
Weight Loss no eating after 8 Dec 05 2006

I used to follow the rule of no eating after 7pm, but when I got a real job after college I couldn't follow that rule anymore.  I get home at 7pm so sometimes I'm eating at 8pm.  I'd like to blame my weight gain on that, but I'm more inclined to believe that my visits to the pastry shop are to blame! :-)

I agree with marneedear.  I can never sit still, I'm always doing something and I'm still chubby.  I even have a stability ball in my office so I can bounce on it.   Sometimes I annoy myself, but I do provide comic relief to passers by!
Weight Loss What to do about school lunch? Dec 04 2006

Hey Jonathan!

I agree with the Future Mrs. Haifley, bring you're lunch to school even though you might get strange looks from the "cool" kids.  In High School I would crash diet and lost a lot of weight.  I ate a diet bar for breakfast with water, M&Ms and Diet Coke for lunch and then I'd eat whatever my grandmother cooked for dinner so she wouldn't worry.  Then I'd exercise in my room for an hour.   But in the long run it didn't work and I gained back about 25 pounds of the 60 pounds I lost when I started to eat normally again.  You see I never learned to eat properly!  If there's one thing I've learned it's that you must eat!  If you do not eat, you can not burn fat.  Skipping meals just backfires in the end.  You're better off bringing a healthy lunch and a healthy snack or two to school.  Kick the bad habits now, learn to eat properly and you'll be better off when you're older.

Best of luck!

Weight Loss 7 lbs by Christmas? Dec 04 2006

Hi Rire!

I have the same goals!  I need to lose some inches and get rid of some extra fat.  The problem is spot training just doesn't work.  To get rid of extra fat we need to do cardio, cardio, cardio.  The trouble for me is that I only seem to see results if I do 90 minutes of cardio a day.  I just can't fit that much time at the gym every day.  I'm thinking about asking a trainer for some tips on doing intensive, short bursts of cardio that will equal 90 minutes in fat burn, but is easy on my tired knees.

Also, while cardio is key to losing fat, we must keep up with our strength training so we don't get loose, flabby skin.  Yuck!

Finally, make sure you're eating enough.  I know it sounds counter-productive, but if you don't eat, you don't burn fat.

Good luck and Merry Christmas!

I love the grading.  It really helps me make good decisions.  If I choose a snack that brings my grade down, I can change it to a better snack.  It's great.

Oh, do I hear you ladies.  I got married in October 2005 and I'm up 8 pounds.  I'm so angry with myself because I worked so hard to lose weight for my wedding and now I've almosted gained it all back.  I do this all the time though, so I really can't blame my hubby, but I will anyway b/c he's such a good cook!!!

I'd like to join the club!  I'm supposed to eat between 1200 and 1300 calories to lose 15 pounds by July 4th!  I realize that's not too far away, so if I don't lose the entire 15 pounds I won't kill myself.  I'm finding it difficult to stay within that calorie range though.  Yesterday I ate about 1550 which isn't bad, but I won't lose any weight either.  I just get so hungry!  This is what I've eaten today so far:

Breakfast:

Thomas' Light English Muffin (100)

1 tablespoon chunky peanut butter (100)

1 tablespoon sugar free strawberry jam (20)

Baby Carrots (25)

1 tablespoon hummus (25)

For lunch I'll have deli turkey, with low fat cheddar cheese on Wasa Crisp Bread with an apple.  Later I'll probably have an orange and a Chocolate Crisp Rice Cake.

My problem is tonight at home.  I'll be hungry and my husband cooks. I try to eat only a small portion, but he's a really good cook! Help!  I need some low calorie but filling food suggestions for during the day so I can resist at night.

I'm 5'5" but with a small frame and my weight usually falls between 124 and 138.  If you have a larger build I'd say that 145 would be about perfect.  I think 156 is a bit on the high side.

Cyndya is right.  Don't stess about it.  Go back to your normal routine.  If you were REALLY bad you can shave off 500 calories today and tomorrow to compensate a bit.

I could not have resisted the cake and pizza either!  What a pillar of strength you are for only have 1 piece each!  I would have gone for 2 each! :-)

Keep up the good work!

I like the South Beach Diet Ham & Turkey Wraps.  You get two make it yourself wraps and sugar free jello for 220 calories.  The big down side is the over 1000 mg of sodium.  If you're watching your sodium intake, don't eat South Beach's lunch boxes too often.

If you have over 100 pounds to lose, talk to your doctor first.  He/She will make sure that you are fit enough to exercise.  Then all you need to do is eat less, move more.  Also, I recommend Weight Watchers.  You can join on-line so you never have to attend meeting or get weighed in from of lots of people.  Weight Watchers will teach you portion control and the online support forums are great.  Especially when the weight doesn't come off as quickly as you'd like it to you'll always find someone who will empathize with you!  YOU CAN DO IT!!!
