Over the last year I've looked around for sodas that are sweetened with cane sugar.  There aren't many, and they sell for premium prices.  But if you can find Goose Island root beer it tastes great.

Another way to get fructose-free soda is to make your own.  I used to make my own root beer several years ago; using yeast, cane sugar and Hires root beer extract.  You have to get a capper and bottles, and it takes a few days for the soda to mature. It's not nearly as sweet, has a slight yeasty flavor (plus a little bit of yeast dregs in the bottom of the bottles), and isn't as fizzy as regular soda.  After one bottle you don't crave drinking any more.

This might not be possible for everyone but may be helpful for a few: Some of my friends get their soda by the case from other countries. For example, the Coca-Cola sold in other countries, such as Mexico, is still made with cane sugar. It tastes MUCH better. I don't drink soda myself but my friends who do frequently carry back several cases of soda every time they leave the United States.

Furthermore, it is sometimes possible to get the "Mexican" Coca-Cola inside the U.S. because it is produced in U.S. factories. I know folks in Texas who buy it straight from the factory that way. Something to investigate perhaps...

I love this thread!

I recently switched my Rice Krispies addiction for Rice Chex because Rice Krispies contains HFCS. Chex have a few more calories per serving but not enough to keep me from switching.

Foods Cottage Cheese: making it more palatable? Nov 05 2009

I like to use it on top of a salad instead of salad dressing. I also find the smoother texture of "small curd" cottage cheese much more palatable (2% Breakstone's is my favorite).

I like this recipe a lot too: http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/ Herbed-Cottage-Cheese-with-Multigrain-Bread-1 08654

Foods What is everyone's obsession with oats? Oct 04 2009

Love rolled oats for breakfast. There are also steel-cut oats and the "quick oats" which are just different ways of cutting up the oats. Rolled oats are whole and I prefer the texture. I add skim milk, cinnamon, and dried cranberries to mine. I find that 2 minutes is too long in the microwave because it causes the milk to boil. I do one minute, 40 seconds.

They're also great with banana & almonds, brown sugar and blueberries, cinnamon and raisins, a little maple syrup... just about anything you can imagine!

I am a huge cheese addict. I loooove Cabot's 50% light cheddar slices. Just 70 calories per slice and all natural, not processed. I use it on sandwiches but also, since it's sliced into one serving portions, if I eat a little cheese snack it's much easier to watch how much I eat.

Also, a lot of hard and swiss cheeses have relatively low calories when compared to softer cheeses.

That sounds pretty healthy and delicious... assuming you add some toast and fruit or nuts or something. I might add some spinach for additional vitamins too.

I think you should do what feels healthiest for you. You are going to have to pay attention to the overall trend regardless of whether you weigh every week or every morning. For me, weighing every day is a reminder each morning to stay on track and it helps me understand my body in terms of what too much salt or dehydration or hormones etc can do. But that's just me and you need to do what works best for you and helps you stay healthy.  Of course, you could try a compromise... maybe you could weigh every third day, for example?

Health & Support Hair Loss? May 25 2009

This happened to me after I had a really nasty bout of flu. I was convinced that the new medication my doctor had recently put me on was causing it... and that I was going to go bald. Luckily, my sister-in-law is a dermatologist. She told me that lots of people lose a bunch of hair after their body has undergone some stress or change. For example, after pregnancy, change of medication, hormonal changes, or being sick. What happens is that when stressed, your body may stop losing hair in its normal cycle. Instead, it holds on to all the hair. Then when things have calmed down, you shed all of the hair that you normally would have lost slowly over that period of time. However, you do not lose any more hair than is normal, you're just losing it all at once. It's called telogen effluvium. Thank GOODNESS she mentioned this to me, as my doctor was ready to take me off every single medication I was on, including birth control, allergy meds, etc! He had never even heard of telogen effluvium. A dermatologist should be able to tell if this is really what's happening. Apparently it's very common!

Yum, I love breakfast sandwiches! My open-faced creation from this weekend:

One slice low cal oatmeal bread, 1 egg, 1 tbsp of salsa, 2 oz chopped spinach, sprinkle of weight watchers mexican shredded cheese (half serving = 40 cals), 1 tbsp low fat sour cream.

I scrambled the egg, salsa, cheese, and spinach together (though you could fry the egg and layer the ingredients instead).  Then I toasted the bread, spread my sour cream, and topped with the scramble. Even the boyfriend liked it!

200 cals.

I'm in! This is the first group I've joined. I think it will help and I like the idea of celebrating together. I'm 5'4" and I want to lose 15-20 lbs by Labor Day. (by my calculation, at 2 lbs per week it should be 22 lbs by then? am I doing the math wrong?)

Step one: I had a great day today and kept to my calorie goal for the first time in too long.

I also learned to like it because I don't eat much meat. It can be done! I now love cottage cheese as a topping on salad. I also really love the chive flavored kind. I do hate how much sodium it has... I tried buying the low sodium kind and then adding my own stuff to it and it was just awful :(  Definitely try it on greens with cucumbers and grapes though.  It really bulks up a salad and is a quick way to add some low-cal protein.

I learned to love it by eating those Breakstone's Doubles. It's pretty much just like adding fruit preserves.

I've also been known to add it to a veggie wrap as a substitute for mayo or regular cheese. You might really like it this way! The texture is much less noticable when incorporated into the wrap.

5'3.5" 143 pounds; apple shaped

In Canada, so I think US sizes are closest (when I was younger, US size 6 = Canadian size 8; I'm not sure whether that's still true or if they're the same now)

  • Size 6-8 pants
  • Size 8-10 tops (small or medium; I *never* thought I'd ever fit into a size small top so this is weird to me)
  • Size 8-10 dresses

I've never actually found an EXACT twin on here before. That's me, 100%, right now. Cheers!

Weight Loss Natural Appetite Suppressants?? May 04 2009

Cinnamon! I try to eat 2 teaspoons a day. Usually on my oatmeal in the morning. Sometimes on a baked apple in the afternoon as well. I read somewhere that it helps to keep your blood sugar levels even, so you're less likely to get run down and grab a snack as a pick-me-up.  It seems to work for me.

Also, I'm not sure if it really counts as an appetite suppressant per se, but I like to pad most of my meals with a bed of baby spinach. It significantly reduces the calories I consume at each meal.

I love it! I am glad that they came out with new games as I was getting a bit tired of the ones that came with it. I live in a second floor apartment of a very old house so I had to give up Dance Dance Revolution. Tragic! Luckily, Wii Fit has some similar activities plus the balance activities and it is much more low impact! Hooray!

When you're sick, I think it's good to eat whatever your body craves (within reason of course).  If you want to up health-factor, making your own soup can be really easy. Just get some low sodium chicken or veggie broth (or whatever kind you like) and add veggies, noodles, rice, beans, or whatever you have around. Just cook the ingredients as you normally would in water.

So I did a bit of research on someproducts mentioned, including I can't believe it's not butter. It does in fact have calories thanks for that info. I understand it also has artificial ingredients. It did not list hydrogentated fats although apparently we the consumer can easily be mislead by deceiving marketing. I found Brummel and Brown at Haggens and it has partially hydrogenated soybean oil, I also found Smart Balance and it had TBHQ, when I looked up that it said it is a chemical which causes cancer in lab rats but only at high levels, which is why the FDA approves it in our food.

Before my diet I would have never put any of these things in my body, however now counting calories I want to get the best bang for my buck without clogging my arteries or giving myself cancer. Being new at all this it sounds like I'm just better not eating any of it or just carefully portioning my real butter consumption.

Ack! That's what I get for believing everything my mother tells me. I think of myself as someone who reads labels and is very conscientious about what I put in my body and yet I completely missed the partially hydrogenated oils in Brummel & Brown! Thanks for letting me know. Maybe I will try mixing my own butter and yogurt spread.

It gets easier, I promise! I am very similar in that I've always eaten very healthy. I just love food so much I overeat the healthy stuff. We have the same calorie goal and my problem area is the tummy too!

My most trusty trick is bulking everything out with spinach or romaine... or whatever low-cal high-fiber bulk food you love. I have a friend who uses carrot and cabbage strips. Pasta, couscous, sandwiches, soups, sushi, cottage cheese, even pizza... when I'm getting used to eating less, nothing gets eaten without a hearty helping of spinach to bulk it out. It really, really helps me feel full while eating proper portion sizes.

To satisfy my sweet tooth I eat low sugar hard candy or apple slices baked with cinnamon.

I get through work by planning out my snacks well ahead of time and I keep them in single servings... no endless bags allowed! I usually go for fruit and nuts/low-cal cheese. I've also found that a little caffeine helps since I get the munchies when I'm feeling tired.

I second the margarita pizza idea. You can do the sliced tomatoes with lots of other toppings as well. I love spinach and mushroom. Artichoke hearts (not the ones soaked in oil) are great too.

Also, if you investigate your canned tomatoes section, you can find sodium-free versions of just about everything. I love the petite diced tomatoes or just plain tomato paste when fresh tomatoes aren't in season.

Quaker Old Fashioned Oats

Craisins in the winter, blueberries in the summer

Tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, canned diced tomatoes, etc.

Pepperidge Farms Light Style Oatmeal Bread

Brummel & Brown

I JUST bought a canister of America's Choice Sun Dried California Raisins. That's the generic store brand at A&P, which I bought because they were cheap. No oil at all listed anywhere on the package! I honestly wasn't aware that raisins came with oil but these seem perfectly normal to me.

Brummel & Brown!  It's actually real butter and yogurt. It tastes slightly sweeter than butter but I actually like it better than butter now! No scary artificial fats or other scariness, just deliciousness.

Oh, and another lesson I had to learn the wrong way. While dairy foods are a trigger food for many people, switching to soy may cause even more problems. It turns out that you are more likely to be sensitive to soy than you are to dairy products. I switched back to dairy and personally, I've been better off.

One more thing: Campbell's double noodle soup (no chicken chunks) is a godsend. I eat it whenever I'm not feeling right. I'd recommend trying it!

I have Ulcerative Colitis, which is very similar. I have to agree that this sounds like a strange recommendation considering you now need to be concerned about your nutritional intake. Lots of people with IBD will restrict what foods they eat during times when they are prone to flares. This can be very helpful so long as you also make sure you are getting enough nutrients. However, 15 days of juice just sounds excessive! Unfortunately, there is no one diet that works for everyone and everyone has different trigger foods, so you need to figure out what works for you. I highly suggest keeping not only a food diary but also a diary of your symptoms so you can begin to track which foods might be your triggers.

I also strongly suggest checking out the message boards at http://www.ccfacommunity.org There are some very knowledgeable and experienced people there.

I  have to share my own experience with GI doctors. I went to one doctor for the first 2 years. Although I had a very rough time keeping the UC under control, I loved him and felt he was wonderfully competent and caring. Eventually, he moved away and I had to find a new doctor. I tried 2 doctors. One of them immediately recognized that my course of therapy had not been working and suggested going in a completely different direction. It worked! And I've been feeling great for 6 months now!  Lesson learned: Second opinions are worth the trouble! Even if they only confirm that your own doctor is right.
