Weight Loss Will protein shakes help me lose weight? Jul 16 2007
19:40 (UTC)
As a athlete at college, our nutritionist advised 40% protein, 40% carbs and 20% good fats (not from animal sources) to help us slim down and peak performance ability. This has helped me tremendously and provides a good balance for losing fat, maintaining muscle, and having energy available.

Artificial sweeteners are an interesting idea. I used to drink so much diet coke its disgusting, but I have weened myself off all together and I do feel better. The reason phenylalanine is in bold font on the back of the labels is because it causes a life threatening reaction in people with certain nervous system disorders. However, next time you go to the doctor ask them if they use it and most I have encountered won't.

ISOPURE.. tasty, nutritious, and fat free! I use it every day and the best part is that it fills you up for quite a while. Price at about $100 a tub, but worth it if you weight train any amount

j, i never said anything about stupidity, and im sry if you felt my explination was inadequete, however, i will stand by my information in the simplified form. I'm not stupid, but I know there are many smarter than me and Im not afraid to admit that. (Unless everyone would like to come to phila and sit down with a textbook and cup of coffee [and my transcript]) the cheap jibes are unnecessary

athena, that was a simplified version for the nice people of cc, as I know not everyone is interested in a 30 page essay. however, seeing as my "sophmore bio" classes are the pre-requesite to med-school, and your name is not "Dr. Athena_Tavener", your welcome to contact me for a more detailed explenation. best regards

Athena: i will look at this thread from time to time, and all the while think about the bio 210 and bio 220 courses which served me so well, bc you see, anatomy and pysiology serve as a basic course for progams which require a brief overview as opposed to the in depth discussion of biology (pre med). I guess things have changed a bit since you were in school.

well, you can imagine that while you maintain a healthy diet and exercise with lots of will power, shes home sneaking ice cream..in the end she has noone to blame but herself, while you take all the credit for your success. I say: congragulations and kep up the good work!

haha im glad someone else found this interesting..maybe im not the only biology dork in the land lol..supersized, you do make a very good point and i agree whole heartedly that it would be hard to isolate one of these nutrients to invoke such a result, however, i do know that it was the collene that improved the memory so im going to do some research and see if i cant find out more about this stuff. Thanks for the insight!

hahahaha oh athena, this "child" you respond to managed to get you worked up beyond what you should, its not healthy, you know. Hopefully you at least understand that the fundamentals of weight loss prohibit you eating large portions of your favorite sweets and having the weight fall off of you. Maybe im not being fair without knowing your resting metabolic rate, but if it were astronomically high (to be eating tons of ice cream and still lose one pond in one day, a total of over 4000 calories) then i assumed you wouldn't be on this website in the first place...sorry for the mix up

athena, lets be honest with ourselves..if you ate all that ice cream, and a pound of fat is 3500 calories, there is no way you could have lost a pound of fat in one day..unless you run for 7 hrs every day as well as not eat. Your weight loss could be due to loss of water, which weights 8lbs per gallon. A little water loss could add up to loss of a pound. btw, branched fatty acids (like fats and heavy diary aka alpha and beta lactose) will stay in your system longer. They bond to the stomach acids, which in tun takes longer to break them down (8-72 hrs)..its chemisty, my dear athena

when you eat that junk, it latches onto your body. the simple carbs (sugar) and fats will sit in your intestine longer and wait to be used as energy or turned into fat, they are just thicker substances. The pros of the complex carbs (whole wheat, etc) is that they are considered ruffage along with fruits and vegetables, which all clean out your system reletively quickly.

So when your eating these bad things, they stay in your body and pollute it until vitamins and minerals come along and whisk them away. This logically will take the two or three days. If you eat 200 calories of ice cream before you go to bed, your going to feel noticebly worse the next day then if you eat 200 calories of broccoli. The broccoli will pass right through and the sugar and heavy dairy will stick to you for a bit making you feel sluggish.

my suggestion is a) not eat that crap; or b) have a little, but make sure it is within you daily calories. If it takes 3 days a week to get back on track, your spending 12 days a month just making up for your "free days". this means that all that hard work your putting in is only 60% effective. Is it really worth a bowl of ice cream every week to slow your progress by 40%? you have to really love ice cream...
