I agree 100% with le3. How you carry yourself is super important. Whatever size your are, whatever you're wearing when you leave the house, it's a guarantee that you'll look better if your posture is good. Being aware of your posture and carrying yourself well is also subtle exercise for your core muscles (will make you look thinner instantly!). I know, I sound like your 7th grade Health teacher, right? LOL! I'm just sayin'...

Sounds to me like you could make a great Thai-style peanut sauce for marinading or salad dressing. Just substitute it for the peanut butter. |

| Calorie Count | Enhancement Request: copy prior meals or multiple tags | Aug 17 2007 08:29 (UTC) |

This feature already exists. All you have to do is give them the same tag. For instance, I have a tag called 325breakfast, which has my usual breakfast of high-fiber cereal, 1% milk, 2 servings of fruit, green tea, and a few supplements with calories like omega-3 oil. All I have to do to add that breakfast to my log is click on the arrow to the right of the tag, and wa-laa! my breakfast is logged. Likewise, I have a salad that is my usual basic tossed green salad which are tagged BasicSalad, so I can easily add it to my dinner. |

| Calorie Count | Food Suggestions for Me | Aug 17 2007 08:10 (UTC) |

This site isn't very good at tracking things like sodium, calcium, cholesterol. Even the things it does track, like fiber, don't seem to show up in the food recommendations. There is no way to say, "calcium is important to me, please track it, and figure it in to my food recommendations." So far, the recommendations seem fairly useless. Who knows, though, perhaps they'll get better with time, since they will learn more and more about what foods I eat. It will be interesting to see if they change over time with more food log entries. Also, as their algorithms get more sophisticated. Let's hope their algorithms get more sophisticated. |

| Calorie Count | More charts/graphs/bar tables reports especially to show long term progress | Aug 17 2007 07:57 (UTC) |

I'm disappointed that I can't see the progress chart with the trend line that the old site provided. The trend line was especially useful, but overall that chart was very helpful in keeping my motivation up. Are there any plans to add it here? Edit: Never mind; I finally figured out how to find the chart. Doh! |

| Weight Loss | Eating 1200 cals a day is too hard! | Aug 15 2006 22:49 (UTC) |

| As you get smaller you need less food. Also, your metabolism adjusts. So don't be discouraged if you have to lose at a slower rate now (to avoid being hungry). You can always drop 50 calories or so off your allowance after a month or two of losing, then 50 more in another month, and so on, until you're able to get to 1200 without suffering from hunger. That will speed up your weight loss. I agree with all that's been said here about high-density low calorie foods. I've been averaging 1200 for my entire weight-loss period, but I'm seldom hungry, and if I am I eat high-fiber cereal out of the box, or I eat a high-protein no-fat food like unsweetened yogurt, and that gets me through. AND I've been very successful with the weight loss, averaging 1.2 pounds per week. I'm only 3 pounds from my goal and starting to think about maintenance! |

I read this book. It's fun to discuss it with my Afghan consultants. The issue of child abuse is a big one in that part of the world. The people in rural Afghanistan are so poor, and uneducated. Soldiers returning from Afghanistan have told me that when you go to these villages, you have to be careful not to express any admiration for the beautiful children you see there, particularly the boys. The men might offer them to you! What impressed me most about this book was that he does such a great job of exploring shame. A very worthwhile theme. And a very worthwhile read. I agree with alibuch. Reading Lolita in Tehran is a wonderful book, and will make you want to run right out and start a book group (not to mention, re-read Lolita). |

| Foods | Keeping Veggies Fresh | Jul 25 2006 20:03 (UTC) |
|
| Here's another suggestion (I always seem to get mine in late, sorry...): I use Ever-Fresh Green bags. They really work! I'm noticing an increase in how long things stay fresh. You can find them here: http://www.reusablebags.com/store/evertfresh- green-bags-pack-medium-p-27.html I buy lots of organic baby greens at the farmer's market every weekend. Lettuce is hard to keep fresh. What works for me is to divide my large bag of lettuce into two smaller, green bags. Squeeze the air out and fasten tightly. As you're eating out of the first bag, the second bag stays fresh because no air is getting in. Air is the enemy of freshness; it oxidizes the food. |

| If you take annah's suggestion and blend it smooth, it makes a great topping for a baked potato. If your cottage cheese is the low-fat variety, this is fewer calories than sour cream. |

| Fitness | walk, run or bike? | Jun 26 2006 20:38 (UTC) |

| Just to add a point to jjelden's good advice: get a tire pump and check your tire pressure before you ride. Good tire pressure's not only safer, it will make your ride more enjoyable. I commute to work by bike, so that's a big part of my aerobic exercise. It takes me over a couple of hills and I'm always hauling weight with my lunch and work clothes, so I get a good workout. I also jog/walk down to the beach pretty regularly (about a mile, over those same hills) and once I'm there I walk in the sand which is great for shaping the legs and butt. |

| aprii, how much fiber are you getting and for how long? Eating a lot of fiber is something that your body needs to get used to. If you are getting enough water and enough exercise and you're still constipated, maybe you really are getting too much fiber, at least for now. I frequently have days where I eat in excess of 30grams of fiber, and I'm unfailingly regular, twice a day. |

| That tip will work with some fruits, too. I added a kiwi fruit to my log the other day and it went from A- to A. Kiwis are high in vitamin C; I thought maybe it had to do with that.

| I agree with dbderby. I like the bagged salads, but I always rinse and put it through the salad spinner. It freshens the taste. When you first open those bags the salad has a bad odor but a quick rinse will take that away, and hopefully rinse away the bacteria, too. I know, a tad less convenient. But much easier than the thorough washing and chopping that head lettuce requires. |

| yogamonkey, it sounds like you're finding good ways of coping. The shared cooking and the indirect responses to implied criticism sound like good strategies. It also sounds like she'd soften up if you pretend to be very interested in what she's trying to teach you about cooking, even if it's something you already know. She obviously wants to share herself with you and your husband, but lacks the social skills to do it gracefully. I hope it gets better and you're able to enjoy yourselves despite her. |
