The Lounge Who do you want to be in 10 years? Nov 23 2009
01:34 (UTC)

  1. How would you like to envision yourself and your life in 10 years
  2. If you were that person right now what would you be doing?
  3. What can you do today to incorporate the characteristics and life-circumstances of the man or woman you want to be in 10 years?
I'll be 35 (gag). I want to be a more confident person and to be working for Human Rights Watch, UNICEF (or some other large organization dedicated to helping humanity). If I were that person right now I'd be stoked. To become that person I must simply continue on the path I'm on. The last 6 years of my life has been to make my plan to reach that goal and start down the path. I'm nearing the end of that path and am hoping that through my hard-work and dedication to the cause it will all work out as plan. I also want to have traveled the world extensively. Money is no matter to me if I have a worthwhile career.

This has gone beyond ridiculous now. You posted this exact thread just a few weeks ago and this is more than the fifth time you've posted about this guy. Not that I track your posts (they just happen frequently), but you've been posting for a LONG TIME about fighting with him and if I remember correctly you posted something when you first started dating saying you felt insecure with him.

As I said last time, if after a year+ you still feel insecure, move on. This is ridiculous. You're gorgeous so he's lucky to have you for that reason but perhaps the reasons for your fighting is your personality. You need a serious confidence boost. No guy wants to date a paranoid girl and if you honestly think he'd cheat on you with his ex or something, then as dnthrox says in every thread "just dump the jerk" but it sounds to me like you have some personal things you need to work out yourself and perhaps it'd be best done whilst being single.

This is Mandarin for "Donkey Hat".  The Koreans must have a word for donkey, no?

Well, sure but it doesn't have the same meaning haha.

"Donkey hat"= 단나구 모자 (dah-nah-goo moh-jah)

At my uni we HAD to take health class, general PE (which was more focused on lowering body fat, upping endurance, etc) and then a free class (yoga, tennis, etc).

I think a nutrition class should be mandatory as well.

It doesn't really translate haha.

엉덩이 모자 translates literally as "butt hat" but Korean grammar is weird so I guess that's the best way to say it. And after asking a few Korean friends they said "butt" doesn't have a matching word for "ass"~ no "bad word" for butt. haha

엉덩이 모자= oeng--deong-ee moh-jah (the "oe" sound is more like a short "o" sound but not quite as harsh as in "ought")

Every email I get from my mom is about the Bengals and all my friends back in Cincinnati constantly update their facebook statuses regarding the Bengals games. It is really nice seeing them do well for a change though. They always have some really great players (Ocho Cinco is pretty sexy haha) so it's nice to see them finally get their stuff together... make that stadium worth the tax payer money. haha

The Lounge Temperature Nov 20 2009

Well you all are suckers anyway. The best thing about Korean crappy winters is the amazing ondol floor heating. I've got a basement apartment and it gets fairly chilly my thermostat doesn't register the current temp. My heat is off if I'm not here and when I'm sleeping. When I wake up I turn it on for about 15 minutes before I shower then turn it off and then when I come home from work I turn it on for two hours then back on one more time an hour before bed. It works for me. I'm a bit chilly now but I just turned the heat on so I'm under a blanket.

I believe the child only has dual citizenship until he/she reaches age 18. Then the child has to choose which citizenship to retain.

I don't really agree. If you're parents are Korean and you're born in the US, Korea gives you dual citizenship until you're 18 (or 21... I don't remember). Then you're forced to choose. It's a really crap decision to have to make and it's not the kids choice on where they were born...

Edit: I didn't even curse but it edited my post anyway... changed.

You're smart.

I have two tattoos on my chest in between my collar bone and my shoulder (if that even makes sense). They do show sometimes but I do my best to keep them covered, especially until I know how my boss will react. Right now I teach ESL in a country where tattoos are synonymous with drugs and gangs so people stare a lot when they're showing (I get a lot of whispering and pointing on the subway). My students have been curious about it but just initially. They don't mention them anymore.

My advice is just to place them where you can still cover them, if need be, for a future career. Mine can always be covered somehow and if I want to show them, it's still easy to do.

American women told you how they would think about it: it's disgusting but we either laugh or walk away saying nothing.

Your English is great however I think there are some things that were translating to you and you took them in the wrong way.

www.projectenlighten.org ;

This one is close to my heart as I'm in the process of getting involved with the organization and hopefully heading to Cambodia soon to do work with them. You can purchase cows which go to a family. The cow is bred and then another family gets a cow. They also have a bike program. You can buy a used bike for $25 (refurbished) or a new bike for $50 and it goes to a student so they can get to school. Once the student finishes school the bike is refurbished and given to another student.

This isn't the one I was thinking of but I can't remember the website right now. Basically you buy animals and they go to needy families in developing countries.

I think most people in the thread remember she lives in Egypt. It's been mentioned several times.

We all feel bad for her. It must feel horrible to go outside and always have these things happen to you because you want to stand up for yourself and stand out as your own person. Though it doesn't happen to me on a daily basis it has happened more times than I can count where Korean men have assumed I'm a prostitute (simply for being a foreigner) and propositioned me for sex. However, I don't let it ruin my day or my life...

Really... it's not the end of the world. One of my best friends in high school was number 5 in the class and her gpa was like 4.3 out of 4.0 (because of IB classes that are weighted higher) and she didn't get into an Ivy League school like she wanted. She did, however, get a 100% scholarship to Ohio State (which is still a good university) and was given a stipend of $1000/month.

You'll be fine. The valedictorian of my class even went to Ohio State.

I'm 25 and the bf is 27. The biggest age gap I had was with my ex... I was 24 and he was 30. I don't think it matters much once both parties are legal (well, I'll say above 21... there's something creepy about a 30 year old dating a 19 year old to me) and the compatibility is there.

While I prefer soy milk, it's basically on par with 2% calorie wise. That's not going to tell.

A friend of mine and I used to sometimes take coffee and mix with with a packet of fat free hot chocolate mix for a treat... saves on calories and tastes pretty good.

Your response demonstrates how under-acknowledged women's issues have become in our society. If someone were to have yelled a racial slur at the op, then a frivilous post like the one from "jackattack" likely wouldn't be tolerated. Like race-based prejudice, gender related prejudice should be taken seriously whenever possible. Comments like the one the op was subjected to (from the construction worker) are often reflective of the way many still think and feel about women. I don't think the comment from "jackattack" was appropriate. It probably won't be moderated, but it's disappointing to see that a young women doesn't acknowledge the obstacles women face, because it's only by being as resilient as possible that they can be overcome.

Fluffybunny: Glad you're feeling better :).

Yes because thinking there is no reason to moderate her comment means I don't acknowledge women's issues in the world. You don't know me so please don't act like you do. I live in a non-Western country and have been accosted by men assuming that because I'm a Westerner I must be a prostitute and have been treated as such. My goal after finishing my Master's is to work for Human Rights Watch so don't talk to me about women's rights and the obstacles women face. I'm not stupid.

However, it's also not my place to say how someone should react to someone yelling something at them. If someone chooses to laugh it off that's their decision to make.

Where did I say I liked it? I think that moderating "I would laugh my ass off" is unnecessary.
