zeppelin,

One thing I tell friends when they say something negative is, "Please don't talk about my friend that way!"  I have to remind myself of that sometimes.

I think it's wonderful (and healthy) to find humor in things, but I wonder how helpful it really is to you to demean oneself.  If it works for you, okay, but if you're at all like me, the "I'm going to say it myself before someone else does" thing applies.  I have so much negative self-talk going on inside of me, that I have to work at being positive.

In fact, while people noticing me losing weight is very encouraging, part of me cringes at all the attention and the negative self-talk of "How bad did I look before?" creeps in.  It's fun (and sometimes hard, too) to be getting smaller and challenging to find things to wear.  It's a positive direction in my life, but it's not without its challenges, too.

I'm finding old habits creeping back into my life - the holiday indulgences and the "too busy to eat healthy" problem.  I found a quote in a FlyLady post yesterday that I've put on a post-it on my computer monitor at work.  I'm hoping it will help me with food choices (at least somewhat) in the days to come:

I AM WORTH MORE THAN NUTRITIONALLY NEGATIVE FOOD!

Are you on blood pressure medicine?  If so, did you consult your physician before starting an exercise regimen?

The reason I ask is that some BP meds force your heart rate down, and really intense exercise can be dangerous and counterproductive.  Are you aiming for 60-70% of your maximum heart rate target for your age?  If you are going higher than about 70% that could be the problem.

You might try interval training - sprint speed alternating with slower speeds - to avoid that, or just make sure your heart rate doesn't go higher than 70%.

In any case, it would be wise to consult your gym's trainer or your doctor, not just us.  Good luck!  (And congrats on the excellent habit of exercising and then walking home!)

I'm with Bill.  Been trying to eliminate clutter from my apartment for about 5 years now, and I ask for small-sized items (like DVDs) or just time with friends.  For my birthday a couple weeks ago, I asked a friend to get my watch repaired, and she did.  It was only a few bucks and the time to take it to the repair stand, but I didn't have to do that.  One year, I told a friend that my only wish for a gift was an evening alone - we're usually with her and her family or with church friends.  I enjoyed that evening soooooo much!

You do so well on the ACT you score highest in the country, but every college in America wants you so badly, and you have a nervous breakdown trying to decide which.

Sasianu,

Congrats on the great start - and for choosing to get healthy!  Woohoo!

However, please note that 1200 is the absolute minimum for a woman - 1500 for a guy - to eat in a day.  Otherwise, your body will go into "starvation mode", that is, your metabolism will slow to nill to conserve because it's afraid you won't get enough to eat to keep it going.

Eat at least 1200 if you're a woman, 1500 if you're a man, of healthy calories per day.  (See site too calculators to help you figure out what calorie level you should strive for in order to lose 1-2 pounds per week based on your activity level because that's a healthy loss plan that will have a greater chance of staying off.  1200 may be way too low at first to lose only 1-2 pounds per week.  I started at 2000 and then reduced to 1800 and then 1700s.)

Yes, that was wrong, but hopefully it hasn't caused permanent damage.  If I were you - and I'm not, so this is really just an idea - I would do as much as you can to rebuild your muscle.  It will then help you metabolize the food you're eating.  Stick with a *reasonable* eating plan, as someone said, high in fiber and protein, low in salt and fat (and what fat is included, aim for good fats like omega-3 fatty acids and no trans fats).

You definitely want not to eat less than 1200 calories per day, or your body will continue to eat itself from the inside out, as you put it.

I'm sure with a positive mental attitude, proper nutritition and hard work you can rebuild.  I'm guessing the road will be longer than you would like and bumpier - just like for all the rest of us.

My prayers are with you for success!
Weight Loss What is your menu ~on an average day? Dec 06 2006

I aim for the 1700s on average for a week to ten days.  I also aim for about 25-26% of total calories to be fat calories, and I try to keep sodium under 2000mg/day (definitely under 2400mg due to my high blood pressure).  I drink about a half gallon a day of water.

Typical menu:

Breakfast:

Shredded wheat cereal with 1/2 cup fruit (blueberries, strawberries, blackberries or raspberries) or lightly sweetened versions (frosted) and about 2/3-3/4 cup skim milk (or 1%).  Today it was blackberries, and I ate a whole cup - finished the package after I finished my cereal.

Lunch:

Salad (one of several varieties, here's one):

3 oz. salmon (from pouch); 1/2 cup each shredded carrots, red cabbage and broccoli slaw - all chopped fine, a couple scallions, 1/4-1/3 cup diced jicama, a couple of celery stalks diced, maybe a half a sweet red pepper diced; and 1 tbsp. Newman's Own Lighten Up Lowfat Sesame Ginger Dressing.

Another typical one is the same veggies with 3 oz. of tuna from a pouch, with 1 tbsp. of mayo and one diced up boiled egg.

I had been having a salad with broiled lean meat, pork or poultry diced up with the above veggies on a bed of half spinach and half lettuce, but I got out of that habit during the e-coli scare.

With either I *might* have low- or no-sodium chips or Kashi TLC crackers.

Today, I bought a sandwich at the grocery store deli because it took so long for my weigh-in at the doctor's office; I supplemented that with fresh mango and drank a bottle of Fuze Green Tea.  It has been taking longer and longer for the weigh-in all the time since they've been noting it in my chart and I have to wait for a nurse to be available.  I used to eat sandwiches a lot, but I don't much any more because the things they put in the sandwiches and the bread itself is usually high sodium (and often high-fat). This was an exception.  Another common exception is Panda Express, but I stick to the two lowest sodium entrees they have that I like - black pepper chicken and mushroom chicken.

Dinner:

3-4 oz. of broiled lean protein (steak, chicken breast, salmon or pork loin), sliced turkey breast or a slice of Celebrity low-fat/low-sodium ham

vegetable (green beans, corn on the cob) and

either 1/2-1 cup rice or potato or a dinner roll.

Snacks:

Midmorning:  I eat a banana.  Sometimes I also have a whole wheat or "everything" bagel with maybe a teaspoon of Smart Balance 37% margarine on one half and 1 tbsp Skippy low-fat peanut butter on the other - or just the bagel plain.

Afternoon: It varies, sometimes fruit (orange, apple, another banana, a peach or pear...), maybe a Skinny Cow or Slim-a-bear low-fat ice cream sandwich, a 1-ounce portion of Cornnuts, some lowfat Zucchini Date Loaf from Trader Joe's or 2-3 cups of light popcorn.

I'm here...these 240s pounds hanging on as if their life depended on it...wait!  it does!  LOL

I had dipped down to 245 according to the doctor's back-up scales (balance scales) and as low as 247 on the balance scales at Curves.  The doctor's old (pre-breakdown) digital scale had me at about 249.  After a couple weeks on their (lower) balance scale and posting a gain on the new digital scale - CONFUSED YET? - I'm finally seeing a downward trend again.

Last week it showed a tenth or two-tenths down.  This week down another eight-tenths of a pound to 248.1 (29.5 down from my original weight in May).  Like pulling teeth, I tell you!

I drank copious amounts of water yesterday - probably very nearly a gallon - because it was my massage day.  (My reward for another six weeks of going to Curves at least 3 times per week.  Okay, I admit it was "on average" this six-week period, because of my trip in early November, but I have gone 23 times in those six weeks.  AND I bought a row machine and have actually put it together and used it.  Okay, I've only used it once, but I *have* used it!  And walked for nearly an hour on Thanksgiving day after dinner!)

Hang in there, everyone...and I'll try to do the same.

Happy,

What I love about typing in the recipe is that in future, I have that saved and can use it over and over again.  Of course, I eat a lot of the same stuff because that's what I like.  I eat a salad each day at lunch, and I really tired of entering the ingredients one by one on the log.  So I put in a Tuna Salad and a Salmon Salad (and actually a couple varieties of my tuna recipe), and now I just click "add to log".  So easy.  Of course, if you cook lots of different stuff, it *would* be a lot of entry the first time you add one, but much more convenient thereafter when you finally repeat that recipe.

And yes, especially if you have any blood pressure issues, *DO* watch your sodium intake.  If I buy canned, I try to buy only those veggies (green beans, tomatoes and corn are about all I buy canned - oh, and tomato sauce) marked "no salt added".  There'll still be a bit naturally, but it makes a big difference!  Any processed food you buy - hamburger helper, mac and cheese, rice a roni, etc. - is going to have more sodium than if you make it from scratch.  My one big-ticket item (sodium-wise) I allow myself is tuna and salmon, and I just have to make sure other things are low that day.  You can buy low-sodium canned tuna, but they charge a LOT for it.   Bagels are really high, too.  I don't need a lot of cream cheese on mine, but just the bagel is pretty high - can be 500mg!

And that gal's *total* was 28 - inches PLUS pounds lost.  Like mine was 9 pounds plus 6 inches for a total of 15.  She was probably 18-20 pounds and the rest inches, I would guess.  Still it's a lot to lose in your second mond.  Most morbidly obese people can lose 20 pounds the first month, but I think it should taper off to 2 -3 pounds a week the second month, for an 8-12 pound loss.  Who knows?  That could have been the case and she just dropped LOTS more inches than I did, though I suspect that pounds accounted for about 2/3 of each person's total for the challenge.
