Motivation go big or go home...not working... Jul 08 2009

I agree with bennyboy.  Don't do it all too fast.  If you know that you always cave at night and end up eating junk, be honest with yourself and remember that you're going to do it no matter what, so work it into your calorie intake.

When I'm having a bad day, and I'm seriously craving junk I used to just do it... and then not eat proper meals.  It's obviously not healthy for you, but it works!  If I knew I wanted to go out for a big horrible dinner at night, I'd eat fruit for breakfast and then soup and salad at lunch to leave room.

Don't deprive yourself, but if you know you go crazy, make sure the bad stuff isn't in your house to eat.  If I wanted something sweet, I'd buy a chocolate bar, and then the portion would already be determined for me, so I couldn't go overboard and have more.

I also doubt that it burns THAT many calories.  When I was swimming I just made sure I continuously swam for 30 minutes, and really tried not to put my feet down at all.  I felt like I got a good workout, because my arms and legs were exhausted.  I was just more concerned about making sure I got a workout for the day.

I sprain my ankle as well, about two weeks ago.  Even though I'm able to walk on it now, my range of motion within my ankle is still very limited, and walking up and down stairs, or quickly is still painful.

I looked on here for advice for different activities, since even weight work right now, that would require me to plie, or squat in anyway wouldn't work.  I'm glad I found your post, because I've been enjoying my pool all week, and keeping up with my workouts!Cool

Something that I learned the hard way when I first started having sex, is that sex can increase the chances of getting a bladder infection or a yeast infection, especially when you're not using condoms (semen changes the pH of your womanly areas).

You might "feel funny" because you're developing something.  Always remember to go pee right after having sex, to make sure all the bacteria in your urethra (the tube that leads from your baldder to the hole you pee out of) gets pushed out.  The friction of sex causes bacteria to be pushed up and can cause bladder infections.

I'm in! I'm 5'2", 130.5 lbs (as of today).  I work 6 days a week, and am obligated to several organizations almost every night of the week.  I'm working hard to fit in my workouts, but I struggle because I'm used to having the time to workout more than I am now.

I've been watching my calorie intake, and I've learned to fit my diet to match what I need, such as a big breakfast in the morning to keep me going a filling snack after work before my work out, and a quick and early dinner after my workout, because I'm always ravenous and will eat everything in sight if I don't!

So far my schedule has been:

Monday: Spin class/weights

Tuesday: off (back-to-back obligations all day until it's time to sleep!)

Wednesday: Something active with my boyfriend like snowboarding, or I go to the gym for Spin class/weights if we can't make plans.

Thursday: Pole dancing (I'm at level 8, so I can get a really good workout from this!)

Friday: off (sleep in between my double shifts)

Saturday and Sunday: I'm trying to push myself to go to the gym these days to do more weigh training, but I haven't been too successful.  I'm exhausted by the weekend and have to work all Saturday night.

Class was great tonight! I definately felt it!

Thanks for the suggestion smurf, but the bikes we use don't have anywhere for you to read the watts.  Isn't effort how you feel your doing though?  If I feel like I'm putting in a vigorous effort and can only give a little bit more, than aren't I working vigorously?  Someone who's less in shape than me will require more effort to reach the same watts, so they will burn more calories than me.  Does that make any sense?

I don't normally count the number of calories I burn, I just make sure I get 3-4 workouts every week, so I guess it doesn't really matter.  It makes sense then why I'm sooo hungry later in the evenign after a spin class!

Weight Loss How Can I Make Myself Accountable?? Jan 07 2009

Thank you so much for all your replies.  I especially liked gi-jane's. I think you totally figured out what my problem is. I don't have a lot of weigh to lose, and I always approach it as something to defeat, "just get through the next few months and it'll all be over".

I DO need to find ways to make me enjoy it.  I enjoy working out, but the healthy food leaves me feeling deprived.  I'm only 5'2" so I don't get very many calories in a day and don't have a lot of room for decadence. I bought some Skinny Cow popsicles though, to help me feel not so deprived of treats!  it's hard after the holidays and lots of careless munching!

I totally agree with getting a real-life buddy, because I too always forget about the groups on here.  My boyfriend, who I live with has tried to help me, but he is the WORST eater ever, and the #1 reason I fell off in the first place and gained it back (we moved in together a year ago).

My friends are all really sensitive about weight related issues, and the mention of losing weight brings on fears of anorexia.  I need to find myself someone who isn't so jumpy about weight-loss.

Ugh, please don't try to make an argument about this.  I posted this in the fitness forum because I know there are other people on here who do Crossfit workouts, and would know that what I described is not ridiculous. If I wanted to plateau or have to work for hours to get the same effects than I would do lower intensity workouts.  Doing tons of cardio will never improve my overall strength which is why I have chosen to participate in these workouts.

I didn't post to get ridiculed. Maybe you should save your judgmental attitude for the posts about starving yourself to get thin.

My workouts are high intensity, training your body to be able to do more. When I started I would have never thought I could lift a 45 lbs bar over my head (I'm a small female). Thrusting a bar into the air may sound not so "brilliant", but it's a common workout technique for doing push presses with a heavy weight.  It's a similar movement that Olympic athletes use during lifting events. By thrusting the bar you're able to use your legs and core to assist your arms with the movement.  Sorry if I made it sound crazy, but these workouts generally are safe, I'm just the clutz who left my face in the way of the the bar!

The Lounge New Puppy Question Oct 03 2008

Everyone's right about not rewarding your puppy for whining.  I know it's hard and you feel mean, but it's not going to kill her to hang out by herself while you go out during the day.  I'll bet you notice that she sleeps most of the day anyways when you are home, so she probably just settles down and naps.

Make sure when you come home though, that you don't go right to the cage and open it.  She probably starts whining again as soon as you come in the front door to get your attention, but if you open her crate right away, she will think it was because she was whining. Try using a command word like "quiet", said sternly but calmly, and everytime she hushes for a moment say "good quiet" and then finally open the crate when she's stayed quiet for a few moments.

My 4 year old chihuahua doesn't stay in a crate, but in a baby grated area of the hallway.  When we get home she has to go wait in her bed quietly before we'll take the gate down.

My friend had horrible acne and used Accutane for awhile, but her doctor has to get her off of it, because it mad her really depressed and insanely angry all the time.  she said she's never felt anything so horrible in her whole life and doesn't care how bad her acne gets, she'll never go back on it, because she's afraid of what it'll make her do (ie, try to kill herself).

She now uses Diane 35, a birthcontrol pill with acne medication in it.   She says it works great.

It depends on how you filled out your profile.  Did you fill out your profile o here and get that calorie amount to eat?  If you did, it depends on if you filled out your activity level or not.  If you put yourself as sedentary then you have to eat more, but if you filled out "moderate exercise" or something, than the calculator already took how much you exercise into account.

Weight Loss Any feelings on the "Zone Diet"? Sep 01 2008
17:55 (UTC)

Hi nikkihmr!

I was just searching for forums about the Zone diet and I found this.  The gym I go to swears by it to help you maintain the required energy to do hard workouts (I go to a Crossfit gym).  I just started at this gym in May and love the workouts, but have just been calorie counting to monitor my food intake, but now I'm trying the Zone way of eating.

My dad lost A LOT of weight on the Zone this spring.  He was previously overweight and inactive.  He started running for only 20 minutes or so, 5 days a week and sticking to the Zone diet. I was amazed how quickly he lost the weight and for someone  who has years of bad habit eating, he said it was easy to stick to.  He did take a few cheat days to go out for his birthday, etc.

I've decided to follow the methods of the Zone AND count calories to make sure I'm eating enough... some people claim they either ate too little or too much.  It makes sense that it would work, since you're getting the calorie count suggested 40-30-30, carbohydrates, protein and fat.  I bought the Zone cookbook, so I can serve my boyfriend however much he wants (one of those naturally skinny people) and then only take what I'm supposed to eat.  My trainer told me I should eat 5 2-block meals, even though Dr. Sears claims no one should eat less than 3, because I'm short (5'2") with a small bone structure and looking to lose weight.

Let me know how you're doing with it!  I just ate lunch... it looked really small, but I'm satisfied and I have another meal coming up in 3 hours ish.

I was born without wisdom teeth (I know I'm lucky), so I have no idea what you're talking about.  I looked up what dry sockets were just because I was interested.  I found this:

http://www.dentalgentlecare.com/dry_socket.ht m

It says one of the things that can cause dry sockets is excessive mouth rinsing because it prevents blood from clotting.  You said you've been rinsing your mouth a lot, so maybe you should ease up on it, but still maintain a clean mouth.

Health & Support Juice fast? Aug 17 2008

A juice diet won't help much with the gas, and it might even make it worse.  Fruit has a lot of fiber and too much fiber can make you gassy.  I used to drink Booster Juice religiously and had to stop from the severe stomach aches it gave me from too much fiber. Plus, you won't be getting enough protein.

Water helps A LOT with bloating.  Just chug away and you'll get rid of a lot of salt.

It's funny that you mention being tolerant to certain tastes.  For awhile in the winter I was eating REALLY clean, and my boyfriend still makes fun of me, because I used to complain that things were "too tasty" and had "too much flavour".  By eating so clean I became intolerant to seasonings and flavourful foods.

I don't really eat chips or those sorts of foods, so I don't know what I'm really going to cut out.  I don't eat fast food regularly either, but I feel like that's more my downfall. Like eating pizza with my boyfriend.  I don't want to get to the point where I don't have ANY fun with my food!

Don't be so hard on yourself, I know it's hard, but you look great!  I'm jealous of your body frame, how you actually have a narrowed waist and hips.  My body is very square, so I just go straight down without any girly curves.

I agree with the other girls. I am 5'3" and 122lbs and I think I look the same as you.  The earlier pictures of you when you weighed 125lbs look waaaay smaller than I ever looked at 110lbs.

I'm giving blood today, so I search the forums and found this.  I understand that the number of calries you burn should be spread out over a few days, but doesn't your always replenish your blood, regardless of whether or not you give it.  It always gets rid of the old stuff and makes new stuff.

Also when you give blood, there's lots of glucose floating around in your blood, so wen you give it, that glucose and all those calories are removed, so you must lose some calories just from giving blood, even if it's not as much as 600 calories.

Really plan your meals before you grocery shop and eating healthy shouldn't be too expensive. I graduated from unversity over a year ago, but my job that's meant to give me the experience I need for grad school doesn't pay very well.  I found that eating healthy WAS very expensive if I just went to the store and bought whatever I thought I might like in the coming weeks.  I found that I'd buy too much for myself to eat on my own before it went bad, so I'd end up wasting a lot of my healthy freash foods.  Now I'm on a very strict budget and I grocery shop every two weeks as I am paid bi-weekly, only stopping in for small things as I need them, so I always have fresh stuff.   If I buy just enough to get me through a week-2 weeks, and buy the non-perishable stuff in bulk, I find my money goes a lot further and I can afford to eat healthily... I'm not saying it doesn't get boring eating tuna salad everyday for lunch during my second week, but until I'm rich enough to spend more on groceries this is how it is.

This week I bought enough lunch meat and fresh buns to last the first week and then 7 cans of tuna for the second week for my lunches.  I bought lostof fresh veggies, a bag of baby carrots and 7 pieces of fruit for my morning snack.  I usually buy bulk plain almonds and a block of light cheese for my afternoon snack, but I still have lots left over from my last shop. I bought a box of microwaveable popcorn and even though they're not the best for you, I bought a family pack of chocolate granola bars for $4.99, because I often get out of control chocolate cravings in the evening (probably because I only eat one piece of fruit a day, and lots of vegetable that don't have sugar)... oh I also bought raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, granola and whole fat plain yogurt, which I'm hoping mixed as a parfait will healthily rid me of chocolate cravings in the evenings. I bought whole fat... 3% because my daily intake of fat is usually low, and hopefully the decadence of it will super satisfy me.  I have a million packages of frozen fish in my fridge for dinner with roasted veggies, and I usually buy a few chicken breasts.  I hate cooking for just myself so minimal work is best for me.  I bought a box of tuna helper too, because along with 1 can of tuna I can get 3 meals out of one box.  I usually eat protein powder for breakfast with skim milk (buy the extra filter for a few extra cents so it'll last longer), but I already had both of those at home and didn't need to buy more.

Ok... so I know that made no sense but my bill only came to $63!!  I will have to go back again next week for a carton of milk and some yogurt and fresh fruit for my snack and a few veggies (one zucchini, egg plant, cucumber,  and a few potatoes will last 1 person the entire week), but otherwise, I only spend about $80 on food every two weeks. $160/month on food is not bad and I know I'm getting lots of healthy food in.
