GREAT FOR YOU.  That has been a pet peeve for me as well.  A few years ago, my son got a bad report card and the explanation was that he sometimes "looses" control.  I sent it back to the teacher and gave him a "D" is spelling and suggested that may be the cause of my son's frustration.  :)
Weight Loss Abdominal Area Pains Sep 01 2006

It could be that your digestive system may be getting used to your new eating habits.  For example, if you were not consuming as much fiber, the change can make you somewhat gassy which can contribute to abdominal pain.  In my case, I got a bit constipated at first until my body realized that I was serious about eating more healthy.  It may be a mild food allergy if you are trying something new.

If the pain persists, I recommend you see a doctor just to make sure it isn't some sort of serious problem.

Do you guys do this.  Right before I step on the scale (and nobody is looking) I suck in my stomach and try to LOOK thinner.  Weird - it is as if my trying to look a few pounds down will influence the scale.  :)

Hey - I am 51 and agree whole-heartedly with you folks.  Before losing 10 pounds was a breeze, now I have to work like heck for every pound! _ But on a good note, I am feeling better, my pants fit a little less snugly, and that motivates me.  Every pound is difficult, I haven't had the fortunate experience of losing the first 10 quickly, etc.  So, one pound at at time and good luck to you all!

I used to have the worst knees on the planet.  They got sooo bad, I had trouble going up and down stairs.  You really ought to try Glaucosamine and Chondroitin supplements.  (sorry for the spelling).  You won't see immediate help, but if you take them daily, you will find your knees to really get in better shape. - it took me about 5 weeks.    Now, I too am up to 3 miles of running as well  I can't say my knees are perfect but heck, they are certainly better than 5 years ago.   I can run and walk but still have trouble with the high heels.  That's ok at my age, flat shoes are fine!

That is exactly correct.  If you are burning more calories, you will need to increase your calorie consumption - I would suggest you use the tools provided on this site to find out what an optimal amount of calories you should be eating.  List yourself as sedentary and then add in the calories burned for the day.

Magic,

I know how hard it is.  There is nothing more demoralizing than having some sort of reminder that you are not as thin as others.  I remember how horrible I felt when I tried to sit in a chair with side arms and my thighs smashed into them since I am so broad in the butt.  I think it was at the movies, and had a bruise on my thigh to prove it.

Just remember than you are not alone - and what really counts is feeling better!  If you keep it up with a healthy life style - slowly but surely things will be brighter.  Some of the advise above it great and I can't add anything else except to let you know that we are all in this with you and are here to help.  Feel better - you have a whole group of folks who care!

I find a glass of wine to be relaxing and not too bad.  Of course, you need to stop at 1.  Also, a white wine spritzer always worked wonders for me at cocktail parties (do they still have them?).  It is half wine and half selzer water so you still can have a little drink but cut the calories and sugar down.

Congratualtion on turning 21!  I've been celebrating my 21st birthday for about 29 years :)

Well - a little update.  It has been two months of frustration and discouragement.  I finally said "to heck with it - the scale is not important" and I continued to count calories and exercise.  I got on the scale today and lost my first 5 pounds.  Needless to say, it was slow but it is the most rewarding 5 pounds ever!

I am not a doctor, but my thoughts are this:  My body reacted to the change in life style and took some time to realize this was not temporary.  I am looking forward to moving the scale in the right direction, but I am more encouraged with my attitude and endurance.  I couldn't even walk well when I started, and now I can run (very slowly) 2.5 miles every morning.  I don't crave the junk food anymore and I just plain feel better.  Isn't that what it is all about?  I have a long way to go, but at least I know the direction this time.  Thanks everyone for your encouragement!

Doctors are not perfect.  It is someone you are trusting your physical well being to.  If you don't feel comfortable with him or her get another one.  I have had some really whacky doctors who mis-diagnosed some serious issues.

Just make sure you trust him - I would recommend you try another doctor just for another point of view and if he says the same thing, then it is your choice to make a change or not.

If you can afford it, I would invest in a heart monitor - with the activity monitor.  That way it will record you age, weight and figure your calories for you.  I just press "start" at the beginning of my run and at the end it will tell me my average heart rate, max heart rate and calories burned.  It is really a great motivator and keeps me from overdoing it as well.

Forgot to tell you, it is more than just a watch, you have to wear a strap across your chest, which is light weight.  This strap actually measures your heart rate.

I have one a love it!  I just started running a few weeks ago, and I clearly was overdoing it.  I was exhausted and frustrated after only a 1.5 mile run/walk combination.  However, when I slowed down, kept in my heart range, I found myself running 2 miles with ease, and  I am looking forward increasing the mileage ( I think I can get to 3 miles in two or three more weeks).

I have the kind that tells me clearly how many calories I burned, will time my workout and keeps a weekly diary which I can download to my computer (although I haven't figured out how to do that yet).  I got it as new on ebay for way less than retail.

The thing is great, it keeps me honest and helps me know when to slow it down.  If I did not have it, I probably would have given up on the running, and written it off as something that I could not do.
Weight Loss Water Pills? Jul 10 2006

My dad needed them when he was older because he suffered from edema which was a direct result of liver damage due to alcoholism.  Therefore, I think it is best to stay away from them unless there is a severe medical reason.

I bloat up quit alot and am often tempted to take them, but I also know that you can lose valuable electrolytes when you do.  Solution?  Cut back on salt and salty food, try cranberry tea (a natural diuretic), and I love to drink Sugar Free Cranberry Juice mixd with Selzer!  Delicious and it is good for reducing the excess fluids.

Of course, alot of water flushes it all out anyway.  It was hard for me to accept that a few weeks back, but now I am seeing the result.  These folks on the boards seem to really know their stuff!  Good Luck!

From what I hear, the one that you will stick with is first and foremost the best.  Otherwise, they all will help, but the cross trainer and eliptical are better since you will be using your arms.  You may want to supplement all of these with some upper body weight training.

Thanks for your response.  Unfortunately, my heart rate actually got up to 174!  My husband, who is a thin runner, was pushing me and I guess I was trying to show off, but when it hit that high, I knew I had to stop.  Honesly, though getting up to 160 doesnt seem that bad to me, but the best thing is to get a doctor's advise.

My daughter told me to just not wear the heart monitor, but she is only 17 and has no clue about someone getting up there in age :)

Yeah, I got the cinnabon at the Service Plaza when I was driving home from a business meeting.  The funny thing was, I was considering something else, but thought that one little bun (big, actually) couldn't hurt.  I was amazed at how fattening they are when I looked it up on the food log.  One thing is for sure, I will get a piece of fruit next time - - heck that one bun is the same as about 11 apples!

The good news is, my weight did not spike - and I took everyone's advice and just wrote it off.  To be honest, if I had cut way back, I would have probably given up so thanks soooo much for eveyone's support!

At age 50, I think it should happen soon.  I have had the Peri Menopausal symptons for 10 years now, and I am noticing new changes - lighter flow etc.  As for weight, this is the first time I am showing slight weight losses.  There really is something to be said about eating healthy balanced meals.

Veevee, I am surprised that it happened to you at such a young age, it must have been tough.  Now that it is over for you, I am a bit jealous!  Thanks for sharing and good luck to you too!

When people make rude comments, I just shrug it off and feel sorry for them!  They don't understand that we have so much more in our hearts and the fact that we are overcoming something as difficult and personal hurt means we are better, stronger and a heck of alot better than they are.

I would say to that bratty girl, "Oh, sweetie, I hope you never have a weight problem, because I am certain it would be hard for you to handle your own comments!"  And if your friend doesn't like it, tough!

Don't know if they still have them, but years ago a white wine spritzer did wonders.  Half Wine half Seltzer.  Tasted good and was light.
