Fitness personal trainer - very discouraging introductory session Jul 03 2008

I am also a trainer and I am sorry that you had such a bad experience. As a trainer my number one goal w/ my clients is to get them feeling good about exercise!  Because, obviously if the person doesn't want to be there, then duh they are not going to lose any weight or get any benefits from it in the first place.  I think some trainers go overboard w/ giving new clients too much to work on at once.  A better approach for most clients is to start w/ one aspect of their lifestyle and work on changing that and then as they progress give them some new goals to focus on.  Some clients can handle more than others and it is up to the trainer to get a read on the client and give that individual person what they need at a pace that they can handle it.

As some other posters said, the info the trainer gave you sounds correct...but her delivery of the message sounds completely tactless.  My experience w/ coworkers and trainers that I know is this: There are some who have exceptional knowledge but no people skills.  There are some that have amazing people skills but very little knowledge.  There are some that have neither and there are those that have both. Try to find yourself one who has both and you probably be a lot more satisfied with your experience.

I hadn't heard of IFTA, so I looked it up (I'm a personal trainer too) and basically you order the materials and take a test in a week or two....doesn't sound too good to me. ACE is better. Other good ones are NASM, NSCA, ACSM or ISSA. Ask the trainer what their education background is also. They should have some background in exercise physiology or related field.

A real Christian would never be part of the Upper class. They would give all their money away, and be in the lower class.

my guess is, they aren't

edit: and considering the population size of christians that are poor to middle-class vs those that are super rich, it makes your argument silly.

When you think about the numbers, the vast majority of christians are giving a lot of themselves even when they don't have much themselves.

Please. In the United States, most garbage disposals eat better than anyone living in a third world country. Give me a break -- "don't have much themselves". Hah.

Are you really going to compare someone living in a third world country to someone living in a first world country? That's ridiculous.

Go ahead and tell me how a family that's got $2,000 mortgage, a $250 gas bill, a $500 grocery bill is living high on the hog on $4,000 per month BEFORE taxes and healthcare...

Cost of living matters. Yes the standard of living is higher, it also costs an arm and a leg to live here.

Sounds like that family you mentioned is spending in a large, lavish house. I live in one of the most expensive cities in the nation for housing, and my rent is less than half of that.

Not really following this thread but where in the world do you people live? $2000 a month is a large, lavish house?  In the SF, Bay Area you cannot buy a decent house for much under $1 million dollars. Our tiny 1500 square foot townhouse sells for $850,000...and that is true all the way from San Francisco to San Jose and everywhere in between. Our mortgage is roughly $4000/month.  And gas....today I paid and I kid you not $4.99 a gallon. It cost me almost $100 dollars to fill up my sedan.

I have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.  They are SO sweet and great family dogs.  They do have some health problems so you HAVE to get one from a reputable breeder. No pet shops or backyard breeders.  A healthy one will run you about $1500-$2000 but they are worth every penny.

Slampe...you are a genius!!! I got fitted today and I need a 51cm bike.  You obviously know your stuff. Ok, next question. I have narrowed my selections down to two different bikes: the Specialized Dolce Elite or the Trek 2.1. I can't decide!  There also two others that are a step down from these two. The Specialized Dolce and the Trek 1.2 but I am worried about buying the lowest end in terms of the components and all that. What do you think?  Also, do you have a preference between brands?  At the moment I am leaning more towards Specialized. I have read good things about the Dolce...and most have said they preferred it to the Trek. It is SOOO hard to make this decision though.  I am such a total newbie to this.

First off you are incorrect. There are many posts discouraging people from using light weights ie dumb bells. If you don't know this already please spend a little time actually reading the posts in this forum. Also if you had actually read and comprehended what my original post stated, then you would know that I was asking those who are committed to heavy lifting to ENCOURAGE those of us who are not currently doing it instead of speaking to us as we are moronic and what we are currently doing is somehow deficient.

I am still having a hard time w/ your implication that people are discouraging dumbbells. First off, dumbbells come in a variety of weights from 1lb all the way up to 125 lbs.  I use dumbbells but I tend to use higher weights than lower weights depending on the exercise. Secondly, no one is saying don't lift light weight dumbbells if that is what is challenging for you.  All they are saying is if you want to build/maintain muscle and achieve the most fat loss, it is better to lift heavy weights for fewer repetitions than to lift light for a large number of repetitions.  It really isn't that complicated and no one is trying to be mean...that is just the way it is.

Fitness What Qualifications Should A Trainer Have? Jun 06 2008

This is a response that I wrote in another thread a while back. There is one other cert that is good and I forgot it now....but it starts w/ an I. Sorry, can't remember now.  Anyway, I am a trainer and this is what I would look for to hire one.

If you are looking to hire a trainer you should ask what certification they have. It should be one of the top 3: NSCA, ACSM, NASM. ACE is ok too. They should have a four year degree in exercise science or something related. They should have a minimum of 1-2 years of experience. They should sit down and talk with you prior to your first workout. They should go over your health history, prior exercise history and goals. They should take basic measurements height, weight, blood pressure etc... Some will take body measurements and some will measure your body fat (I don't always do this because clients with a lot of weight to lose are often uncomfortable and sometimes it is better to just have them pick a pair of pants to act as their measuring tool). They should preform some basic fitness assessments to see if you have any movement inconsistencies that need to be addressed. They should allow you to ask questions. They should explain to you what they are thinking in terms of a workout plan for you. They may need to work on this after the see you workout a little because it helps to watch a client in action before making an exact plan. They should be able to explain why they are having you do a specific exercise. If they don't do these things and you don't feel comfortable with the person for ANY reason....DON'T let them train you. If you like the person but they are having you do something you don't like or understand....you MUST speak up. It is partially the client's responsibility to inform the trainer if you are not getting what you want.

Bigmommah, I think you are misunderstanding the point of the don't use the "pink dumbbells" thing. You are losing weight (by the way congrats on that) right? But, do you want to end up w/ a skinny, flabby body or a skinny, fit and non-jiggly body? If you continue to lift for endurance (light weights/high reps 15+) then you will end up w/ the former. If you lift as heavy as you can for no more than 10-12 reps, you will end up w/ the latter. There is a myth perpetuated by magazines etc.. that women will get big and bulky like a man if they lift too heavy. This is false and that is why women are encouraged to put down the "pink dumbbells" and pick up the heavy ones. It is not that anyone is trying to put someone down because they are unable to lift heavier weights. You should lift as heavy as you can w/ good form...period. The poundage of the weight doesn't matter as long as it is heavy enough for you. All we are trying to tell women is how to do the proper type of exercise to get the results they want. If you prefer to have a skinny, flabby body...by all means continue to lift for endurance but if you want a hard, fit look then you need to change your training. It's not an insult it's just the way the body responds to weight training...you can't change it.

Kash,

I didn't choose my workouts based on magazine articles. Long before I found CC I found The Firm. Here were women and men who looked liked me, lived similar lifestyles and found a way of working out that works for them. Many of them have lean bodies that don't jiggle and work out in a way that I find enjoyable.

My point again is that there are viable options to obtaining our goals and that there are those of us who for whatever reason are not into heavy lifting. Will I try heavy lifting one day? It's a possibility that I won't rule out but in the mean time I will continue what motivates me and is helping me reach my goals.

Thank you for expressing your viewpoint without deliberately trying to denigrate mine.

I wasn't saying that YOU personally picked your workout based on magazines...just that is one of the places that the "pink dumbbell" myth is perpetuated. BTW, I have THE FIRM series at home and I am also a personal trainer. And, one thing I know about the THE FIRM is that the weights that come w/ their videos are adustable! Meaning you can and absolutely NEED to add weight to them as they become too light for you. The other thing I can tell you about THE FIRM is that even though I think it is overall a pretty good series for someone who is new to weightlifting, I can promise you that the women in that series did not get their muscular shape by just doing the exercises in those videos. Some of those girls are very muscular and there is no way to get that muscular by doing those DVDs. They are too cardio based and it is difficult to lift your absolute heaviest while doing the movements as quickly and w/ as many reps as they are doing. Anyway, I don't have a problem w/ THE FIRM as a good introduction to weight training and I think it is great that you are doing something that you enjoy to lose weight. Even, I occasionally use the videos when I can't get the gym and I want a fun cardio/weight lifting circuit style work out. However, after you get past the beginner stage you will probably find that the DVDs are not difficult enough to really get the results you want. And, if you continue to do endurance based weight lifting (especially in a calorie deficit) you will eventually end up w/ a smaller and flabbier body rather than toned body. Again, this is not a put down to you it is exercise physiology plain and simple.

My advice as a fitness professional to a client like you would be to keep doing your workouts, but make sure you using the heaviest weights you can (while still keeping perfect form) AND to consider adding a day of just straight heavy weight lifting w/o the DVD's. You can still use dumbbells BTW you just need to make them heavier and drop your reps to no more than 10-12. Anyway, I have no interest in putting you down and I think it is wonderful that you are making a healthy change in your life. That said, I can't lie to you and tell you that an endurance based fitness program is the answer you are looking for...unless of course you prefer the look of a skinny, soft body. If you do (and that is totally your perogative) then you are doing exactly what you need to be doing to get that result.

It's just a medicine ball...big effing deal. You can buy one at Sports Authority...probably even Target.  They also come in different weights...gasp!  So, when your G-ball gets too easy for you...which it will.... you will have to get a heavier one if you want to continue your progress.   Also, there is really nothing I can think of that you can do w/ a medicine ball that you couldn't do w/ a free weight.  I guess if you have money to blow...buy it...it certainly won't hurt you, but why waste the money?

Fitness avoiding building neck muscle Jun 06 2008
17:18 (UTC)

Make sure you are not engaging your trapezius muscle when you do shoulder stuff and don't do any exercise that specifically targets that area.  For example, don't do upright rows. If you are doing lateral raises or front raises or even rear delts make sure you are using your deltoid muscles and not your traps.  Don't lift your arms above your shoulder. Be mindful of keeping your shoulders down and rolled into a neutral position. Some people (present company included) have a tendency to scrunch their shoulders up to their ears when they lift.  Make sure you are not doing that.  I also have over developed traps... sucks on a woman...but I have big boobs and that makes it worse.

You can try adding oxyclean to your wash....that helps sometimes. Also, pretreat the stinky areas (arm pits) w/ liquid detergent. I have found that my deodorant seems to lock in the smell there. I know TMI but I have found that pre-treating the area helps.  Also, wash your clothes right away...don't let them sit in the hamper growing funky bacteria.  If all else fails, toss the clothes and buy some new ones.

Yes, Nordies has them and so does Bloomingdales. Make sure you buy them a size too tight cuz they stretch quite a bit.  They are truly my favorite jeans and I have tried them all.  Citizens for Humanity are good too.   I buy the Seven Boot Cut Stretch BUT I think you would do better w/ the non-stretch especially if you have a really tiny waist. I am built the exact opposite of you...super skinny legs and thicker through the waist.  Anyway, try on all of the styles to find one that works well on your body. You will love them.

I do this too....especially at the gym. I am seriously hard on myself and sometimes I get really envious of girls that I think have awesome bodies.  It's not that I wish them ill cuz I don't....I just wish I could look as good as they do.  It is a total insecurity thing on my part and has nothing to do w/ my husband at all. He worships me and not that he never looks (he is human and male) but he is not horribly obvious about it and always tells me how hot and beautiful he thinks I am.  He actually gives me grief about my comparing myself to others. He says I need to stop doing it cuz it just makes me feel like crap and he is totally right. But, I just can't seem to do it.  Being female is hard sometimes. Oh well, it does make me feel better to know that a lot of woman are doing it too. I'm guess I'm not as crazy as I thought I was Tongue out.

Weight Loss Weight going up May 26 2008
03:39 (UTC)

This happened to me too. I started losing then I stopped, then I upped my cals and then I started gaining again. What got me losing again was one or more of the following things. I'm not really sure because I did them all at the same time.

1. I took my weight lifting workout up to a new level.

2. I increased my calories slowly. I am up to between 1500-1600 (from 1400)

3. I stopped eating my starchy (whole grain) carbs after 12 pm

4. I added a cheat day every 10 days or so

Also, I can't remember if gave up sugar or not. But, if not, you are probably going to have to in order to lose. You are already at a healthy weight and in another post you mentioned your belly as your problem area. It gets really difficult when you are where you (and I) are. Your diet is going to have to be very clean.

kashicat do you know that Jack's father (Christian is his name by the way, haa) is also Claire's father? They revealed it last season, I believe. It showed Claire as a goth teenager with black hair and she finally met her biological father, which was also Jack's father. Drunk doctor and cheating husband--what more could you ask for?

I like your "moving the island to another dimension" theory. But, it did show an episode or two ago that once the Oceanic 6 were off the island, Kate was talking with Sawyer on the phone.

I really hope the season finale answers some of these questions. I was disappointed at how short the season was. Ah well, the writers managed to condense enough hell and chaos in 8 episodes.. :)

Yeah, I knew that Christian was Claire's dad too. I mentioned it in the post but I didn't word it very well.  I also couldn't remember his name.  Anyway, I agree the season was way too short...how dare the writers strike interfere with our viewing pleasure....lol.  I do recall the part where Kate is on the phone but are we sure she is talking to Sawyer? I can't remember.  It is just so freaking complicated. There is definitely some kind of weird time/space thing going on. But, another theory is the island is some kind of place between life and death, a place where you can redeem yourself and go back to life or move on to death. I don't know it's all really freaky!  But, I LOVE IT!!!

I think skinny jeans look good only on girls that are 100 ft tall and thin as a rail. For me it is Seven For All Mankind Stretch Bootcut. I don't care if they cost $150, I would rather have 2 pairs and wear them all the time, then spend $40, $50, $60 on others and hate the way they look.

I love Lost. My husband and I watch it religiously.  It drives me a little insane though because for every question answered, it leaves another 100 unanswered.  Anyway,  I am thinking that when the Oceanic 6 somehow get off the island (most likely in the helocopter) the other survivors who are waiting for their turn to go get stuck when John Locke somehow "moves" the island (which I am thinking means it goes into another time/dimension or something.) And, the Oceanic 6 want to protect the other members of the group and the existence of the island so they make up the story about being the only ones who survived. I have no clue in hell what happened to Claire and why she is hanging out in the cabin w/ Jack's and her Dad (who I guess is Jacob?). I don't know but that part just scrambles my brain.  My brother thinks that the African American dude who is John Locke's caretaker in the hospital flashback is actually "Walt" (Michael's son) all grown up. But, I am not sure about that part.  The episode prior to the last one or maybe it was the last one (can't remember) when John Locke was a kid and Richard came to his foster house and started asking him which items belonged to him. That part made absolutely NO FREAKIN sense whatsoever. AAAAAHHH, I can't think about it anymore cuz it is making me crazy to not know what is going on!!!!!  I can't wait till Thursday night!! Don't be hard on yourself....all that does is set you up for failure.  Remember that eating small, frequent, healthy, balanced meals all day is what is going to fuel your metabolism and get you the results that you want.  You need to not be afraid of food. I know that is hard, I have had that tendency in the past. Food is fuel...period and your body is like a car. If you put premium in it and fill up regularly your engine is going to run at it's best. If you put lousy fuel in it and let it run out of gas your engine isn't going to work so well.  Just think of that way.  Also, try planning out your meals/calories for the day before or even for the week and just try to keep yourself on a schedule of eating.  You may not feel hungry at first but eat your planned meal anyway.  If you are used to going long periods between meals, your hunger cues are probably messed up. You don't get hungry for hours and then all of a sudden you are ravenous.  That is your body going into starvation/conservation mode. You don't want that.  You CAN do this though. It takes some dedication and some time but you will accomplish your goals if you make yourself a priority.  Good luck.

Pseudoephedrine has somewhat the same chemical structure as ephedrine but not quite the same effect. The fat loss pills containing ephedra/ma huang relied on the apetite supressant effects of pseudoephedrine combined with the increased fat-burning effects of ephedrine (and the interactions with aspirin and caffeine that extended the effects of ephedrine on fat burning) but had nasty side effects on the beta receptors in the heart.

Considering the amount of users and the side effects per 100,000 reported ECA wasn't all that harmful compared to other medication when taken in the indicated doses - but when it comes to fat burning supplements, people are in general idiots and it wasn't uncommon for people to take 10 times the recommended dose. Which as it turns out is bloody dangerous, particularily when combined with dehydration.

Synephrine, the ingredient in Bitter Orange that a lot of companies are using to replace ephedra in a desperate scramble to find something that at least works a bit and can save their cash cows are nowhere near as effective, has a little less side effect potential and doesn't jack up your nervous system as much, but I've seen a study that says people taking synephrine lost 30% of their 1RM strength which makes me shy away from it entirely ;)

Interesting. Well, I will take the appetite suppressing benefits and I'll just have to keep up the killer workout (just finished 3X15 Workout B) to get my results.
