Thank you mkculs for saying that a slow pace is ok! I just finished week 1 of couch to 5k, and I feel stupid because I really do go quite slow. At the back of my mind I know that I will gain speed with time, but thanks for the reminder that slow is not a bad thing! |

You can also do it in the crock-pot. Pierce the skin in several places, stick the whole thing in the crock pot, add a cup or two of water and cook on low for 8-10 hours. Voila! Let it cool a bit before cutting it and removing the seeds. |

| Weight Loss | Seemingly doing everything right, yet gaining instead of losing! | Aug 22 2008 14:05 (UTC) |
|
I realize that I am within the healthy range, but it is the upper end of that range. I've gained rapidly with little to no change in my diet, neither of my parents struggled with weight until they hit their 40's or 50's... and I can't stop gaining, not to mention start losing. I guess it is the principle of it more than anything else, it is a puzzle that I can't solve. I will try upping my cals for a couple days and see if that helps... I think I am counting my food pretty accurately, but I could be wrong. I would love to try swimming, but the nearest pool is about 18-20 miles away and I can't afford the YMCA membership right now anyway. :( I'll try to think of something else that is different than what I've been doing but still free. :) Thanks so much for your suggestions! |

I am rather shocked that anyone would suggest that Anna Friel needed to lose weight... everything I have seen her in she looks prettly tiny, in a natural way. Good for her for standing up for realistic standards! gadzooks: I love Chuck and Pushing Daisies too! :) |

| Weight Loss | Anyone walking off the weight? | Jul 05 2008 05:35 (UTC) |

Walking is great, I walk 5-6 days a week as long as the weather is at all cooperative. It is good exercise, and it can be great exercise if you push yourself a little bit. For instance, I add a few extra hills some days or break into a run for short periods during my walk. I also find that it is easier for me to get motivated to walk when I'm tired than to do some other forms of exercise. I tell myself I'll just go for a short walk, but then once I'm out there I enjoy it so much that I go farther and might even add some running. It seems like walking is kind of looked down on by some as not a legitimate form of exercise. All I will say is that I walk faster than most people jog, so it must have some benefit. :) |

| Weight Loss | Binge-ing as a result of lethargy? | Jul 01 2008 14:53 (UTC) |

Original Post by gadzooks: Wow, finally someone else who had the same mono experience I had! I gained weight with mono, but the classic symptom is to lose weight. I felt so jipped! :) And in reply to the OP, I, too find myself eating more when bored, lazy, procrastinating, etc. Yucky weather doesn't help, either. My advice would be to get out and do something first thing in the morning. Go for a jog or head to the gym or something. It will help you feel like you are accomplishing something, and hopefully curb the excess eating. Good luck! |

I just wanted to join in the chorus of people who have stretch marks from puberty... I had stretch marks long before I ever needed to think about keeping my weight in check. Clearly this guy has problems... I would advise you to stay away from him as much as possible, just for the sake of your own peace of mind and sanity! |

| Foods | How much do you spend on groceries per week | May 06 2008 20:49 (UTC) |

My mom spends $160 a week for the five of us, but 3 of us buy our own lunch stuff much of the time. Also, no one else in my house really eats healthy, so I buy some stuff for myself at times (I spend about $15 a week on my own lunch stuff and other healthy things I want for myself). My mom scours the Sunday paper for coupons, cross checks the weekly circulars and makes a detailed grocery list before going shopping. |

| Foods | Fiber One Bars - Oats and CARAMEL | Jan 17 2008 19:32 (UTC) |

I just bought some Fiber One bars after reading about them on these boards... so far I have only tried the Oats and Caramel ones, and I really like them. They are really filling and don't taste like cardboard (what you expect when you hear the word "fiber"). I guess they don't really taste quite like caramel but they are great anyway. The texture and consistency is good too, really chewy. Yum! |

| Weight Loss | Snack ideas for work.. | Jan 17 2008 18:47 (UTC) |

Some of the things that I snack on at work (I keep them in my drawer): Almonds, though be sure to put them into individual portions or else it's too easy to go overboard (at least for me). Half an ounce (12-15 almonds) is 80 calories. Sugar free pudding cups, only 45 calories Dry cereal measured into 1 serving portions Fruit -- apples, bananas oranges grapes... anything you want Fiber One bar 140 calories but nice and chewy so it takes awhile to eat Fun size packages of M&M's... not really healthy, but I usually will suck on one at a time so it takes a really long time to eat the whole thing. Thus my mouth is busy and I feel like I treated myself. 1 package is only about 90 calories (20-23 M&M's). One thing I just came up with but haven't tried yet is to make my own "Trail mix" with a few almonds, a few M&M's and some cereal (I bet Fiber One or Kashi Go Lean would be good). Again, its all about keeping my hands and mouth busy so it feels like I am eating alot... usually when I snack at work its not because I am actually hungry but more like I just need a distraction (terrible work ethic I guess!). If you have access to a kitchen you could also try making yourself a cup of herbal or decaffeinated tea. Sometimes drinking something hot will take my cravings away. I have more ideas if you would like some, but I hope this helps you get started! |

| Foods | Plain Nonfat Yogurt taste help | Jan 14 2008 14:58 (UTC) |

| I will often slice up 1/2 a banana or apple and mix it into plain yogurt with some cinnamon. The fruit adds enough sweetness to the yogurt to make it easier to get down and I like the flavor of the cinnamon. I find that berries aren't sweet enough to add to plain yogurt without some sugar. | |||
| Foods | Who owns a Food Scale? | Jan 08 2008 18:38 (UTC) |

I have the most basic that I could find - it was $4.29 at Linen's n Things. I agree with what everyone else has said, it is really eye opening to see what you have been misjudging and which measuring cups are inaccurate. For instance, 1 ounce of Cheerios (1 cup according to the box) goes quite a bit past the one cup mark on my measuring cup. My scale has a dial so you can use any container and set it to zero before adding the food. |

| Foods | More fiber?? | Jan 08 2008 18:26 (UTC) |

If you can't get the Fiber 1 down you could also try Kashi Go Lean cereal. I eat the regular one (not Crunch) which has 10g of fiber and 13g of protein with only 1g fat and 140 calories. And since the "fiber twigs" (as it says on the box) are mixed in with other things, they aren't as noticeable. All the above suggestions are great, too! |

I eat cereal with milk, oatmeal with a banana or pumpkin, toast & eggs or yogurt & fruit for breakfast (just one of those things not all). I keep almonds in 1/2 ounce (80 cal) portions stashed in my desk drawer to snack on. Also unsweetened applesauce and sugar free pudding cups are good. For lunch I will have a tuna sandwich or a can of Progresso soup or a Lean Cuisine as my main item, then a Dannon Light'n'Fit yogurt (60 cals) and some frozen veggies. I keep a bag of veggies in the freezer at work so that I can just heat some in the microwave each day. Later in the afternoon I will have another snack, usually an apple or banana that I brought from home. I usually have another snack when I get home at about 5; something not too healthy like Wheat Thins, then dinner at about 6:30. Dinner varries wildly... maybe pasta with sauce, veggies and bread would be a typical dinner. For dessert (if I have calories left) a little fat free frozen yogurt or a piece of fruit or a sugar free jello cup (10 cals). If I have no room left left but want something after dinner I will make a cup of herbal tea with 1 packet of splenda. Hope this helps. :) |

| I am 5'7", 141 lbs... at my brother's wedding in September I was 145 lbs, but that's not a big difference. My bridesmaid dress was a 12, which was a bit of a surprise because I wear an 8 or 10 usually. I think the shop where we ordered them screwed up though, because another bridesmaid who was not too much bigger than me ended up with a size 20 that was like a tent on her. | |||
| Foods | Entenmann's Little Bites Muffins, Blueberry ( 100 cals) | Dec 19 2007 16:05 (UTC) |

| Big waste of money! I bought the Entenmann's 100 calorie blueberry muffins to see what they are like. You get two tiny muffins for your 100 calories, whereas in a normal package there are 3 muffins for 150 calories. And they aren't that good. I bought the box over a month ago and still haven't finished them. If you must have something like that, I would recommend the Hostess 100 calorie cakes... you get three little cakes, they are quite filling and they even have fiber (I think 5 grams or so). Certainly there are much better options for indulgence, but they aren't too bad if you are looking for built-in portion control. At $4 a box they are not cheap, however. | |||

| Weight Loss | eating less on exercise days, more on off days? | Nov 29 2007 18:55 (UTC) |

I also noticed that I tend to eat more on non-exercise days than on days when I really go for it. On weekends I usually do 45-50 minute very brisk walks plus go up and down stairs with laundry baskets and such. Yet I have no problem keeping my intake low on those days. I think it might have something to do with the fact that exercise reduces appetite. So on days when you are exercising your body doesn't feel like eating much, but then on off days it has to make up for the days that you pushed it hard. That is my own theory at least. :) I found an article about the exercise/appetite thing: |

| I'm 5'7", around 140-142 and I am an 8 or 10 in most brands. I have noticed that in clothing suited for "older" women the sizes run big and I can wear a 6 but in clothing for "juniors" or younger women I have to wear a 14 or so. | |||

Well, this doesn't really contain nutrients other than sugar, but if you are looking to reduce the amount of sugar you are taking in but don't like artificial sweeteners, I would recomment Smuckers Low Sugar jams and jellies. I tried the concord grape flavor and it's pretty good. Only 25 calories per tablespoon, still good on toast and no artificial sweeteners. I've linked the low sugar strawberry preserves nutrition info. |

| I actually am part of a family of six, and though we don't drink that much milk (we get some dairy from cheese and yogurt) we spend at least that on dairy products in a month. I don't think that it is nonsense at all, just part of a healthy diet. We need the calcium and vitamin D (especially women and children or teens who are still growing). It makes perfect sense to me. |

| Hi, I'm kind of new, but I thought I would mention that I personally have found flavored seltzers to be a great replacement for diet soda. No sweeteners, no caffeine, no sodium, no calories. It counts 100% toward your water consumption for the day. I know not everyone likes them, but you could try it and see what you think (I really like Polar's cranberry-lime flavor). The first sip is a shock because there is no sugar, but it grows on you. Good luck! :) | |||

| I'm new around here as well, and I have a similar amount of weight to lose. My peak weight was 148 a few months ago, and I want to get to 129 (I am 142 currently). Weekends can be hard. Something that I recently learned on here is to make a plan of what you will eat the next day (so on Friday night plan your intake for Saturday and on Saturday night plan Sunday, etc). I am a person who likes having everything planned out, so I am surprised I didn't think of this myself. :) I tried it, and it really does help! Another thing is not to beat yourself up when you cheat. I am learning that when I come down on myself for a small failure it turns into a big failure. Just pick yourself up and move on! :) Good luck to you! | |||
