Motivation evenings exercising not eating Mar 31 2009

Evenings are my wasted time as well. I can't WAIT to get home at night when I get off work. Before I leave the office, I tell myself I'm going to jump on the elliptical the minute I walk in the door, but after the 30 minute commute, I usually jump right on over to the wine cabinet for a glass of chianti.

Pre-planning the meals sure helps. It helps me KNOW what I'm going to eat and I can avoid the other stuff that comes along.

But once I'm settled in to my glass of wine, exercising gets avoided.

I've started getting in 30 minutes before everyone else gets up in the morning, and if the weather is nice, I'll take a long walk at lunch. Weekends are good times for me to work out at home, too, but I'm with you- evenings are BAD!

I think you just need to give it a little more time. Right now you are in limbo- you still probably look and weigh pretty close to what you did before you started, and your whole motivation for doing this was to make a change. So you're probably just not feeling 'different' enough yet to realize that you have made a big change in yourself.

I agree with the others, the workout regimen seems a little intense. If you are doing the same exercises each time you go, you might just feel like a hamster in a wheel right now. A caged bird. I don't know about you, but working out feels a lot like work does to me, and when quitting time comes, I can't wait to get out. And I tend to get depressed and stressed at work even when the work load isn't that bad... I just would rather be doing something else.

Maybe you could try changing it to 3 days of walking around a lake or something and 3 days at the gym. At least that way you can get some good walking in, and still get the benefit of the gym machines and classes, too.

Once you really start to see a change, I'm thinking your spirits will brighten. Hang in there!

Motivation Arrrrrrrrg! I'm so FRUSTRATED!!!! Mar 31 2009

Grrr! How frustrating. You are exercising CIRLCES around me! Way to go with that!

The only thing I didn't see mentioned was Fiber. Are you getting 25 grams per day? On a TMI basis... fiber helps get the food back out. So the more fiber, er, scrubbers you have, the better.

Good luck dear! Hang in there!

Motivation What kind of things do YOU do to get motivated? Mar 31 2009

I agree with the poster that said waiting for motivation to strike just hasn't been working for me.

My problem is this: when that motivation DOES strike, I immediately go into planning and list making mode, thinking that NOW is my time to get a plan in place.

But inevitably what happens with that is that I spend the motivation window planning, and when I wake up the next day "planning" to execute, the motivation is gone!

I'm not sure what the answer is. My only thing I have been sorta successful at as far as exercise is concerned is getting up at 6am instead of 6:30, flipping on the workout show that comes on public television and just doing the dang thing before I even give myself time to yawn, or change clothes, or make up any excuses.  It seems to be easier to get 'er done before ANY part of the day has happened.

OK- I don't even like hip hop music, but Pon the Replay by Rhianna made its way onto my mp3 player last year and I never delete it. Because whenever it comes on I find a way to boogie through the whole song.

I would like to be 142.5 and stay there for ever and ever Innocent

But my body has been about 20 pounds heavier than that for almost 5 years.

I don't think I would look right at 125. I like having some meat on my bones, but we all have different body types even at the same height!

Good luck!

Weight Loss Anyone tried this? Mar 23 2009
16:12 (UTC)

I worked there for a week and quit because they expected me to wear pantyhose everyday. Wasn't worth it for a part time job- LOL

After quitting, though, I recommended it to a co-worker who wanted to join a weight loss program and failed with WW, Jenny, Nutrisystem, etc.

She joined, and lost around 25 pounds at a rate of about 2 pounds per week on most weeks. So it's nothing fantastic, but she managed to meet her goal.

She would not have been able to make that much progress without the protein drinks and pills and stuff. I think she ended up spending close to $1000 before it was all said and done.

She met her goal in November. It's now March and she has put about 8 pounds back on. So if you are going to do it, just understand that they are feeding you specific foods and supplements to make it come off. If you don't stick with the maintenance plan, you will gain it back I guess.

IF there's a seafood option, like a piece of fish, with the rest on the side, go for that. That way, in case you don't care for the flavors, you still have a great piece of fish!

Oh, and mulligatawny soup is awesome if they have that!

I'm so sorry for your loss!

Hang in there, though. It will grow fast, I'm sure!

Otherwise, maybe you can get some extensions ala Britney.

And if you were me, you'd be trading in that cake for a nice smooth 5th of tequila.

I'm 5'7 and my man is 6'2.

And no matter what we do in our lives, dieting or not, he always weighs exactly 100 pounds more than me.

I like it that way! Need a big guy in my life to balance me out.

Edit: In your answer to your comment about being underweight.. I've never really had a long term relationship with someone who weighed less than me. I think I just feel more comfortable like that... it keeps me from feeling fat myself.

Here's what I think-

You aren't allowing yourself these things, which is not healthy or, as you've showm, sustainable. Curiosity killed the cat, remember?

Your mentality is that if you didn't purchase it, it didn't happen, or it isn't going to get in your way.

But you can only do without the things you love for so long. What happens to you is that you hit a breaking point. Your body obviously NEEDS these treats...

so don't cheat yourself (or your friends) TREAT yourself!

Set a budget for fun treats... things that are GOOD for your soul... and only buy as many calories worth as you can resonably eat and still lose weight, each week.

That way, you're not robbing yourself of happiness by denying all treats,  you're not robbing your compadres of their snackage, and you're not going to get arrested for stealing from the bulk isle at the store!

Sometimes, I think that my body reacts favorably to a 'pigout' now and then.

I think it likes to be 'granted' the extra fat and calories and works extra hard for me the next couple days.

I usually eat something bad, or drink extra alcohol on Friday or Saturday, and still manage to lose 1-2 pounds per week as long as I'm good the rest of the time.

In the words of Spongebob, It's good for your soul, Squidward!

I like to have a granny smith apple, cut into pieces, with a wedge of Happy Cow Light cheese. (it's in the fancy cheese isle). I take the time to lay it out nicely on a plate and take a little break in between wedges. Every single time I eat that, I am totally satisfied by the end.  Especially if you enjoy it with a tall drink of water :)

I know this might sound picky, but what kind of wheat bread and oatmeal did you have? If it's not whole grain, just whole wheat, it may be missing some of the essentials that keep you full.

And with oatmeal, I was studying the glycemic index for a few weeks and learned that instant oatmeal is not considered as satisfying to your body as traditional slow cooked oats.

That being said, I bought a bag of steel cut oats from the health market and boiled up a big batch to last all week. I grab a cup full in the morning and reheat in the micro. and have found that they stick with me longer than the instant oatmeal packets I used to bring to work with me.

Otherwise, that sounds like a yummy breakfast. Maybe you need to up your water intake in between meals to keep your hunger at bay?

I don't observe Lent, but I decided it would be motivating to do a reverse-Lent.

So instead of giving up something, I decided to DO something. My goal is 35 cardio sessions between feb 6 and march 29.
Good luck to everyone with their goals!

I say, sure! Keep doing what you are doing and you will see excellent results. Even if the number you are going for doesn't hit on the day you want it to, you are still WAY better off than not trying! AND, I think you are doing exactly what you should be doing to see lasting healthy results, so keep it up! If you want an extra healthy boost, try eating 35 grams of fiber each day. It helps!

Vegetarian Fish eating vegetarians? Feb 14 2008

My opinion, as an omnivore, would be that you could say you "stick to a mostly vegetarian diet but occasionally eat fish". IMO, there's really no need to call yourself by any other name (or label)  than the one your parents gave ya!

Peace to all. Recycle!!

If I had to guess,  I would say it's the sodium or maybe the sugar. But I don't think the grading tool accounts for the fact that you're getting mostly natural sugars from Kashi.

I myself am absolutely addicted to their granola bars. I eat one almost every morning. And the lunches are so awesome I can hardly ever finish one! Last time I had the Black Bean Mango I had to throw out 4 or 5 bites because it was so filling!

THIGHMASTER!! I totally used to have one.

The last silly gym product I got suckered into was the Bun and Thigh Rocker... basically a seat you just pushed up and down on with your feet. It's still sitting in my parent's basement. My mom calls it the "bun and skyrocket". hehe

Unfortunately, Hydroxycut became famous when it was able to use small amounts of Ephedrine in its formula. Five years ago, I was taking it and had great success. But I tried it again after the laws changed and it's definitely not the same thing.

Weight Loss Alcohol Oct 10 2007
20:17 (UTC)

I prefer scotch or whiskey and soda water myself.

And I am a firm believer that, yes, this IS a lifestyle change, not a diet.

And I don't intend to ever be a non-drinker, so why would I cut out something that I intend to keep as part of my lifestyle?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with alcohol in terms of my life. Yours might be different, but for me, I choose booze!

I remember from the 1st or 2nd season of the Real World when that Tammy girl got her jaw wired shut. I thought that was a little strange to be presenting to America's teenagers.
