Congrats, you look great!

I was wondering, I just started a new blog and I wanted to do a 'Sunday Success Story' Column. Would you like the be the first person featured? I was thinking that you could give me some information on why you started, how you've been losing the weight, what your goals are and a tip for other people and then I could write up a post about your success.

The blog is http://shrinkingwaistlines.blogspot.com/ if you want to check it out.

If you don't want to be featured that's totally fine and congratulations to you anyway!

It's going really well. It took a while to get used to eating enough again, but I've been pretty set and comfortable with food for about a year now. I haven't lost/gained any weight for months now!

Weight Loss When do you feel different? Sep 16 2007
00:39 (UTC)
After losing over 60 pounds I still feel mostly the same as before - but instead of taking that as a bad thing I see it as a good one! It's proof that you are who you are no matter what you look like. I'm happy I'm healthier now, but I'm still the same person as I was before and I can't blame any self-confidence (or any other) problems I have on my weight. Keep going until you reach your goal, but even then you are still you and that's a great thing because the real you is awesome and don't let anything ever convince you otherwise.
Fitness I did my rowing trial - and my results were average!!! Jul 01 2007

I am a high school rowing coach and I can tell you that it takes years and years of practice in order to get the form of rowing down. Since you have until 2012 I'd say that if you joined a rowing team with the right kind of coaches you would have enough time.

Although I know that you will want to hop on that rowing machine at the gym I would suggest that you NOT until you have someone who can show you how to do it correctly. It is much much harder to fix bad technical problems then it is to teach someone who knows nothing. You might feel like you are helping yourself while you are really shooting yourself in the foot. The fact that you said you can go 5 minutes without breaking a sweat tells me that you need someone who knows about rowing to help. 5 minutes on the erg can mean anything depending on how hard you are pulling. If you are only going at a 2:30/500 meters then of course it isn't going to be too hard. On the other hand if you are pulling under 2:00/500 meters for 5 minutes then you should be sweating bullets. It all depends. Rowing isn't about how far you can go without feeling like you are working, it's about how long you can pull extremely hard before you feel like you are going to die.

I hope I'm not coming off mean or anything, but I've seen people hurt themselves before trying to row when they don't know how. We have so many injuries every year and I just want to make sure you don't kill your chances by hurting yourself. I've coached freshmen and while their enthusiasm is great, they often think that they can just hop in a boat and row away. It takes weeks and weeks to even them to the point where they are all able to row at the same time - and very very slowly at that.

Honestly, your best bet is to join a great club with great coaches. Even if you manage to find someone outside of a club who can show you how to correctly row on the machine it will not be as good since rowing on the water is extremely different from rowing on the erg. As the saying goes - "Ergs don't float".

Rowing is the most complicated (and fun!) sports I've ever done and my advice is to get as much help from experienced people as you can.

Yeah that's what I figured it was, but I'd really like to make sure. That's pretty much what happens to me when I try to walk to class in the winter too... not to mention the fact that I coach rowing starting every Febuary. It's a spring sport but it's still really cold for the first month or so of the season and it's hell having to be outside, on the water, for hours while trying to keep the blood in my hands and feet.

I don't have any answers for you (sorry!) but I do know how you feel about your doctor not taking things you are worried about seriously because they sound weird. It happened with my doctor and questions about my asthma in the past and agian this last winter. My hands and feet will go compeltely white, red, and/or purpleish black in the cold. It doesn't even have to be that cold for it to happen and it happens a lot more now that I've lost a lot weight. It scares me. I've done a lot of research on it and I think I know what I have but the doctors just don't want to help me make sure or even talk about it. I think we both need to either change doctors or demand to be taken seriously - that's what we pay them for afterall.

I would like to know too since those are songs I play often... What I do to estimate is use jumping rope for the same amount of time as I play since playing on heavy means you are pretty much just jummping around at a very fast pase.

Of couse. I'm not too worried about the weight gain from muscle, more about gainning back fat if I start to eat more to gain muscle. Basically, what I want to know is if I eat more, gain some muscle and fat, then diet and use cardio later, will I be left off will an end result of more muscle, less fat? It makes logical sense to me, but that doesn't mean it's right.

Thanks for the replies. This is exactly why I decided to ask here after doing some reading on my own - no one agrees on anything.

Maybe I'll just play around trying things out until something starts to work for me. To tell you the truth while I do eat a lot of protien I'm very agiasnt low carb diets so I'm sure I'm not going to start restricting them even if that will help. Also, I'm not setting out to gain a lot of mucsle so I'm not looking for the best diet for a body-builder or anything. What I'm really wondering is not so much what I should be eating, although that is helpful as well, but how MUCH I should be eating. That's the part I'm unsure about and the part that scares me since I'm still so used to eating under mantinence.
Maintaining quick jump to maintain cals Apr 28 2007
22:03 (UTC)
When I first started to maintain I tried to slower up my calories and failed. It was making me feel out of control for some reason and I was pretty much panicing for a while there that I could never near normal again. Finally I decided I had had enough and started eating almost enough to maintain all at once. I didn't gain any weight doing it that way like you did though. I wouldn't worry about the 6 pounds yet, there is no way to gain that much in less than a week unless you have been eating crazy amounts of food. Give it another week and see what happens. Don't worry about the weight, even if it really came back (which I doubt) you know you can get rid of it because you already did it once!

Fitness Did I really burn 915 calories?? Mar 11 2007

I wouldn't trust the DDR counter. I play on heavy mode and and it tells me that I burn something around 30 calories per song. I really think as you move from light to standard to heavy it gets more and more innacurate. I normally cut the calories it tells me in half in order to get something that sounds about right. If someone could prove me wrong that would be awesome though!

Morji - I've been going to talk to someone about how I was having a hard time eating more even though I don't want to loose any more weight, and to be honest they haven't been helping me much. Now, this isn't to say it was a problem with them, but rather a problem with myself. What I really needed to do was the same thing I did when I set out to loose the weight - wake up one day and say "I AM going to eat enough calories to mantain today." That's it. No elaborations, and no "I should's". When you say "should" it gives you room to not do it, People should floss everyday, people should get enough sleep, people should keep in touch with old friends, but do they really? Not very often. By useing "I AM" there is no room for you to shrug it off. I've been much much better about eating now that I've, for lack of a better way to say it, hardened my reslove. Go at eating just like you went at dieting, with willpower and a desire to be healthy.

Also, a lot of people say to stop weighing everyday but for me it helps me eat more because I get to see that even though I feel like I ate sooo much food that it didn't make me gain any weight. And even if it did, I know I have the power to change something and loose it.

If you honestly say to yourself "I AM going to do this" and still can't do it then maybe it's time to go see someone professonal. I think this is where the line between "just so used to dieting" and "having an ED" is. If you are on that other side then there is nothing to be ashamed about in getting help.

As far as my body goes I like my neck, hands, and face. But the thing I love the most is my eyes, they have rings of different colors that can change.

I don't like my "ant tummy". I have a very defined waist line and instead of that being a good thing it makes me have two lumps instead of just one. It's starting to go away (yay!) after having lost so much weight.

I also hate my boobs. They are too big and do nothing but make me not fit in clothes. I haven't worn in a dress in years because they won't zip up the top because of them. I thought loosing over 60 pounds would change that, but nope! Same problem, smaller numbers. It's come to the point where I can't even find a bra that fits in normal stores because the difference between the cup size and the band size is too big. *sigh* I hate shopping because of this problem!

I like making a strawberry wrap. You get 1 la tortilla wheat wrap (50 cal. 8g. of fiber) and spead 2 tablespoons of cool whip free on it. Then you chop up some strawberries (or whatever fruit you like) and put them inside. Simple and yummy!

Radbird - I'm so sorry. I'm 20 and my parents got a divorce when I was about 14. Before Mom moved out things at home were really really bad. My father is an emotional/mental abuser and it's messed up my mother even years later. All thoughout high school I used school activities to gain some control over my life, then when I went to college I used my grades as a control (not that straight A's is a bad thing, but sometimes I overstress about not getting a B+...) and now that I've lost a lot of weight those control issues have moved to food. I can understand how you must be feeling. It isn't easy to deal with parents who seem to act younger than you do.

I'm not pretending to know what your family life is like with just that small bit in your last post, but I do understand how it affects every other aspect of your life. Please learn to lean on your friends, I still wear a ring around my neck everyday with my nickname on it that my friends bought me to remind myself that I have people who care. And if that isn't enough I'll always be willing to listen to you.

I'm the same way, I'm about 5'6", 133 pounds. I've lost over 60 pounds now and reached my goal a few weeks ago but now I can't stop counting everything and I'm convenced that if I go over 1200 cals. a day I'm going to gain it all back. I excersise almost everyday and if I do it less than 5 times in a week I feel like crap about myself. On days I do I know I need to eat more than 1200, but I can't. It's a struggle to get there every day and now that I don't want to really loose much more the thought of eating enough to maintain is frightening.

It's gotten worse since school started agian since I don't know what is in everything I am eating and I tend to overestimate to play it safe. I know it's turning into a problem so I made an appointment to see the nutritionsit here on campus next week.

Wendy5000 - I DO think this belongs here because I think it is a problem a lot of people have once they reach their goal. Making sure you don't go back to your old ways of eating is only one problem that people have after weight loss. Making sure that you eat ENOUGH without feeling guilty is just as big of an issue for those of us who are having the oppisite problem.

Thanks laika, that does help. Over time I'm sure my mind will catch up with my body. And it's really not completely a bad thing that I don't fell any different, it just goes to re-enforce that it's not what you look like but who you are on the inside that matters.

It's strange, I hear of people feeling so much better after looseing weight but that just isn't happening for me. And it's not just that I haven't reached the point where it would make a difference since I've gone from 195 to 132 - you would think I'd feel different. I'm sure it because nothing in my mind has changed, in my head I'm still that 'big girl'.

I did have "humps" all throughout the 8 months since I started this. The biggest one was around 160. 160 was the lightest weight I can ever remember being past the point where I stopped growing and once I got back down to it I just couldn't get into the 150's. It seemed like to took forever to break though it, but once I did it was pretty much smooth sailing the rest of the way.

cmillington - Random question - where are people getting those virtual people in their profiles that show you what you will look like at different weights? Thanks!
Weight Loss Is this starvation? Jan 27 2007

Just because it is easy to do doesn't make it heathly. People aren't trying to argue with you, we are trying to help you so that you don't hurt yourself and those that care about you.

And just to let you know I lost almost 30 pounds in 3 months eating 1200 a day. After that it slowed down a little but now, 8 months in, I've passed my goal and I'm down over 60 pounds. Eating enough isn't going to slow down your weight loss because your metabolism is also going to be up. You aren't going to loose any faster when you are killing it with starvation.

Ok, so lets pertend that it isn't unhealthy (which is really is) and you are able to get down to 110. Then what? Do you honestly think you will be able to stop eating so little and start eating at a normal maintaining level everyday? I doubt it. I know that now that I have reached my goal, which I did by eating about 1200 a day, I'm having the hardest time ever convincing myself that it is ok to eat more than that without gainning it back. As soon as I go over 1200 I start to freak out. I'm sure the same will happen to you, except it will be at a much lower number and before you know it you are rail thin and killing yourself.

Not to be mean, but I'm sure you posted this here in hopes of getting someone to tell you what you are doing is Ok when you know that is isn't. If you are so sure that it is alright then you shouldn't be afraid to go talk to the doctor since they won't tell you to stop.

This is going to sound weird (it did to me too when my mother mentioned it) but what about baby food? I'm not talking about the goo, but about the little "finger food" puffs that come in flavors like apple cinnimon, strawberry, cherry, sweet potato and banana. You can have 80 of them for only 25 calories. I was surpised at how good they are to munch on.
Weight Loss Calling Calorie Counting into Question Jan 24 2007

I counted to the exact only about the first week or so. Then I started estimating and did that for over 7 months and lost over 60 lbs. Now I'm back to counting and recording everything because I recently figured out I was overestimating most things I was eating and going under 1200 almost everyday + exercising about 5 times a week. Now I have to count or I fall back into eating less than I need to be.

While I agree that it gets obsessive it's something that some of us need to do for a while in order to figure out how to estimate accurately.
