yea tofu pups are awesome.

there's a real good brand of fake beef jerky and i cant think of it right now.

yves has other awesome stuff like meatballs but yea...fake meats are not for everyone....ive been told sometimes people think they taste like play dough haha.

i like the tofurky peppered slices...they seem to be the most flavorful

yves brand are ok.

smart deli are my least favorite.

they are all high in protien but taste not that good if you are eating them alone. i say put veggies in the sandwhich too and some veganaise to disguise the flavor haha, although tofurky brand to me, doesn't really need that.

i had the 2nd generation ipod...(which is not nearly as good as the new ones) there was a lot of complaints as far as battery failure goes...so about 2 years in i started having battery problems...and it was running poorly.

eventually the hard drive would be wierd and it wouldnt play songs it would just skip to the next song or skip every song on one album not playing any of them. one day it did this and i got reallly annoyed so i threw it on the ground haha (bad idea)  whatever... so then it was working but really slow and the computer rarely recognized it in when id plug it in.... i took it to the apple store and they told me the hard drive was dying and to fix it would be more than buyign a new one...so RIP little ipod. haha.

my boyfriend has the 60 and its wonderful. longer battery life and just so much room to put movies and music. make sure if you get this ipod you get a little case for it too cause it comes with this suede pouch and its not nearly enough to protect it.

rahana, i say go big.... go for the 60 gig that way you can put as much video and music into it.

i had a 40 and i loved it...then 2 and half years later it died (it was kinda my own fault...so i cant complain about apple too much)

now im using my roomates old ipod mini 5 gig...its a big jump down from having everything at your finger tips to having to be really picky about what to put in so i say go big. that is if youre a big music freak. if you, are its a wise investment!

i am lazy so i will say that amethystlavender's initial post pretty much sums up how i feel and why i went vegan.

the "why vegan?" pamphlet was a major eye opener. (as i was vegetarian for 10 years before i even thought of going vegan)

reading diet for a new america reinforced my ideas and beliefs and really helped me make the step.

anytime i get even a slight temptation i read the "why vegan ?" pamphlet and i know what i'm doing is right.

you can download a copy of "why vegan?" if you haven't read it before, its really informational:

while i think peta has good intentions most of the time, i think they execute poorly, thus giving vegans and vegetarians a negative vibe.

i get alot of shit for being vegan...although a good number of people respect me, alot of other people seem to be threatened about it.  (i actually had a conversation about this the other day)  there are people who i know that eat meat (which is fine..this is a decision ive made for me)  who will hang out with me and my boyfriend (also vegan) and they'll constantly make comments "oh i dont knwo how you do it, i could never be vegan cause of this candy" or "well the reason im not vegan is cause of these cookies" and constantly throw in there "well i couldnt be vegan because of this or that" and NO ONE is even talking about being vegan at the time those comments are made. its almost as if they are threatened or insecure about the fact that they're not vegan and they have to constantly justifiy it to themselves. it kind of makes me uncomfortable because veganism is my diet, not my only topic of conversation, its not my entire being...

so this happens alot and its wierd.

i also get the poeple who say for every cow you dont eat i'll eat 3..and im like eh that's cool have fun w/ that.  its nto even worth getting into a discussion with these people. they are set in their ways.

i am vegan for health and animal rights reasons. if people want to learn about these things i'm down for talking about them and helping someone make better food choices...but i am certainly not intreested in converting the whole world...it just doesn't work that way and this to me is what gives vegans and vegetarians that bad rap like we're a crazy religious group knocking on your door at 6am on a sunday.

I think veganaise is the greatest thing ever. i love mayo and this is the excellent substitue...its around 90 calories per tablespoon.

you can find it in the CC Database by typing in Follow Your Heart . there are several types of veganaise listed there. i ususally use the grapeseed one.

follow your heart also make excellent vegan cheese but im sure you've heard me rant about this before haha.

i def see your points elmfraser. im not all "oh my god we are supposed to be plant eaters! everyone wake up and go vegan now!!!" i def think between you and i, some interesting points have been rasied and that was the purpose of my intitial post, not to ram "rhetoric" down peoples throats. i'm not sitting here saying "well we're 'designed' to be a certain way people!", because if i were to say that and turn it into a go vegan rant, then my post would've really been "rhetoric".  i didnt create the human species, so how can i say what we were desigined to do? i was just stating facts for the sake of a fun agrument/post.

there are many similarties between us and the typical "plant-eater" as well as the typical "meat eater".  although i still dont think we look like cougars we certainly dont look like giraffes either and so i see what you're saying too.  my dairy comments are just a simple observation as far as our diets go....refrencing the points i brought up in my last post, (drinking the milk of another species etc) to me - really is the only thing that sticks out. (because in our culture its very normal to drink milk..it does a body good right?) yes, isnt it wierd we are the only species with technology too? of course... but im talking about diet not our intelligence advances and behavior.

i agree, we are a changing species, and as i stated before, we are very adaptable.  as for what i really believe? i know being vegan is the right choice for ME as you believe the way you eat is right for your body. we're all different. some of us can't digest ice cream, while others can eat a whole gallon of it and be completly unaffected.  i honestly believe we do better as vegetarians and vegans and its proven that you live a healthier and longer life this way.  so mixing this with the common sense of my earlier post reinforces my own beliefs. i was just curious as to what everyone else thought, not brainwashing anyone.

as far as nutrition books that touch up on veganism i must recommend "diet for a new america" this is a brilliant book that i think everyone should read.

elmfraser-while i cannot argue about junk food vegans and people who know nothing about nutrition and protien and how to get it (because i too have encountered many vegans who do not know what they're talking about) i will have to disagree with you on the meat eater/plant eater thing. this can be agrued forever because there is supported evidence on each side. for fun here's my opinion.

one major fact is teeth. meat eaters do not have flat molars (which are for grinding up food), but elongated canine's (to tear through...which we do not have.) yes we have a set of canine's but our mouth is mostly full of flat teeth.  the jaw and tooth scructures are completely diffrent if you were to compare us to a cougar or something.

we also have flat nails, not claws.

meat eaters sweat through their tongues while plant eaters have pores. this has something to do with the hunting of meat eaters (which is generally at night) and how they dont need sweat glands to keep cool.  plant eaters generally find their foods during the day (not hunting in the night) and need the pores to stay cool.

i agree, our body adapts and can learn to digest meat...but i have to disagree with the whole meat eater vs plant eater thing... we dont even have that instinct of hunting in us. we do not salivate when we see turkey's and chickens running around a farm the way an actual meat eating animal would...i can defintely say we salivate over foods like strawberries or watermelon.

these are just some things to throw out there. not meant to shoot ya down in anyway.

as for dairy..i will bring up this point. isnt it wierd that we are the only species that takes milk beyond infancy.  isnt it also wierd that we are the only species on this earth that drinks the milk of another species....

TOFU SCRAMBLE !!!

its an excellent source of protien...and its tasty and low in calories.

amy's makes and excellent tofu scrambler pocket sandwich. its 180 calories and it has great little flavorings including peppers and shitake mushrooms.

fantastic brand makes good mix if you want to make your own scrambler. (its a little high in sodium cause of the spices)  but its quick and fast.

or you can do you're own...flavoring your scrambled tofu with turmeric, cumin , adobo, and whatever other spices you might enjoy.

i do the english muffin thing...i like toasted things...so its a good substitue for bread...

also fruit and melba toast.

bran flakes is one someone already put up but i love it too.

fact: vegans and vegetarians are just naturally gassy...you will soon get used to it. it is proven.... vegan and vegetarian gas and bowels are way more pleasant to pass than meat eaters (this is also true for the smell) i know...you probably didnt want to know that but its true....

another thing....ive heard this from many people....and i expereiced it myself...the first month or so of going vegetarian (or vegan) your body kinda flushes all the meat (or dairy) out of your system.  meat especially is harder to get out of your system...so it should explain the not feeling so hot thing at first. if you continue to feel crappy after making the switch...check to see youre taking the right amount of vitamins and are eating enough protien.

stay away from too much junk...it'll just make you sick. just because its vegan or vegetarian doesn't necessarily mean its good for you.

-hydrogenated oils

-high fructose corn syrup

those are big ones...although i am guilty of indulging in these myself at times, you need to be careful this isnt in everything you eat.

that's all i can think of for now.

good luck!!!!

i have about 2 weeks to prepare myself for it, you know...not to be scared....

i am freaked out because they told me that my bottom wisdom teeth are really close to my jaw and the big nerve there and that there is a slight possibility that i will have permanent numbness & nerve damage in my lip, chin and jaw because of how close they are. do they just say this to everyone?
