Fitness numb feet on the elliptical Mar 31 2007

It happens to me on the elliptical unless I wear sandles so I can wiggle my toes. It doesnt bother me because my sandles have really good support.  If I wear sneakers my feet are numb after 15 minutes and I have to stop.

Fitness whats' teh better estimate for calories burned? Mar 27 2007
17:03 (UTC)
I would say the best thing to do would be to get a heart rate moniter.

Every elliptical I have ever used gives me a different calories burned number for about the same workout. The machine I own now only has me burning about 125 calories for a 40 minute vigorous workout, which obviously isn't right.

Fitness Asthma & Exercise: Questions Mar 20 2007

I have had asthma since I was a young child. Its pretty much everything induced (allergy, exercise, irritants).

First off, get a good doctor. That is the most important part. You want someone who can tweak your medications until they are just right.

As far as exercise I am good with indoor exercises like an elliptical or bike, but I can't jog or run without some problems. Hiking and walking outside are fine for me unless the pollen count is really high. Swimming is also great. Normally I use my inhaler before any really intense exercise.

Losing weight really will help. My pulmonologist said that some people who are diagnosed with exercise induced asthma can get rid of all of their symptoms just by losing weight. Extra weight can really make things much worse.

The Shanghai Gesture crackers have 250 calories for the whole box!!

Most of her other crackers (although really good), are more like 500 calories for the box, which still isn't terrible I guess.

I love these crackers. At first they were an impulse buy at igourmet, because my name is Nicole, lol, but they are awesome!

You are better off going by oz's and weighing your cheese. One persons slice would be different from another persons slice.

I wont give up cheese either, but eat it in moderation, because it does have a lot of calories!

Mine is in miles and it says I run about 10 miles in 40 minutes (working my butt off). It also says I do 15 MPH which makes sence for the 10 miles, but I don't know that I'm actually going 10 miles.

You can't really compare it to running though because 1 stride would take you further than 1 step. I guess it would almost be more comparable to biking. Does anyone know how fast bikers normally go (in MPH)?

I don't bother logging spices for the most part. I also don't log gum, or anything small that I may eat (a pickle, a few grapes).
Fitness Most embarrissing gym/workout moment?.... Feb 26 2007
15:00 (UTC)
LOL, I used to work at the YMCA when I was in college. I had quite a few of my own moments as well as witnessing lots of other peoples moments.

Mine most embarassing was probably when I was teaching a water aerobics class. It was a class for elderly people. I was instructing outside of the pool and then I got in to help someone with something and my top got tangeled on the ladder and came right off. So I ended up topless in a swimming pool full of senior citizens trying to untangle my bathing suit from the ladder. I was mortified. I never wore a 2 piece again to instruct, and later down the line they came up with a uniform for the swim instructors which I was happy with.

When I worked there I did some classes as well as some nights I was the safety person. Basically I bandaged people up who got hurt, and walked around and made sure everything was okay in all the areas. They always had someone on staff that did this. Pretty much every night we had "cell phone related accidents". Someones phone would ring while they were on the treadmill, and for some reason they would pick it up and automatically stop running and thus fly off the back of it.

A lot of people also would try to lift weights with no spotter and not be able to do it. You would just hear someone yelling "help" with a weight bar across thier chest that they couldn't lift off.
The Lounge I'm sorry, but it has to be done: EVERYONE PLEASE READ THIS about grammar Feb 23 2007

Grammar is very important in say an email from business partner, but not so much so (in my opinion) on the internet. My grammar on this site is not always perfect. I don't have a lot of time to post, and I do not always proofread what I have written. My grammar and spelling are ALWAYS perfect in any email correspondence that I may send out as part of my business. In the professional world I do think grammar is extremely important.

I just don't think small mistakes are that big of an issue on a site like this. Things like "loose" and "weighted" are somewhat annoying, but I have better things to worry about when I come here (like getting healthy).

I wouldn't think that walking on the snow would burn near as many calories has hiking (saying this as an avid hiker).

I'm sure it burns more calories than walking on a level surface, but probably not that many more.

I agree that its a training thing. Try a toy or treat (whichever she is more interested in) to keep her attention on you.

She also could be tired. Dogs need to work themselves into activity like that just like humans. Make sure you do not over run her. At 1 she is probably not done growing (and joints wont be fully fused)and you could increase her risks of hip and elbow displascia especially if she is a larger breed.

My grandmother had some of these when we cleaned out her house. I'm not sure where they are now. Most of it looks pretty yucky.

Foods Food ideas - post-wisdom teeth removal Feb 22 2007

This is a good post. In 2 weeks I'm getting 2 wisdom teeth out, and have 2 fillings and a route canal. I plan on sticking to soup.

I had my other wisdom teeth out a few years ago and it wasn't really so bad. I don't think I ate anything for at least a day though. The pain killers made me sick to my stomach and I pretty much just slept.

Make sure you give the gums plently of time to clot. After my dad got his out he immediatly took out the gauze and ended up with dry socket. Just try to leave them alone as much as possible for the first day.

I understand your frustration. We bought one a few months ago, put it together, and it had a broken piece (of course this was the piece for the last step). So we had to box it up take it back and we picked out a new one and had to put that one together too.

Its like they make them more complicated than they need too. And I hate how they put all the screws on the bottom where they could have easily put them going the oppisite direction. I didn't even want to get on the thing after I put it together.

They also put all of these stupid trim pieces on mine, so if you have to tighten anything (which you do have to every so often) you have to remove the trim pieces first. I just left them off the last time. I really don't care if the thing is pretty looking.

Foods Annyone else addicted to cheese? Feb 20 2007

I'm a cheese addict as well. I can't get enough, and I can't eat the low fat stuff. It just doesn't do it for me. I really dislike american cheese too (probably the only kind).

I limit myself, but once per week I have a cheese plate with crackers and fruit for dinner. I make sure I am fairy low calorie the rest of the day and it never hurts my weight loss. I look forward to cheese night.

I also will scramble some cheese into my eggs (but not much), and I have parmesan on my pasta. Parmesan is strong enough so you wont need very much to get the taste across.

The Lounge Cruising to Mexico Riviera!! ^^ (any tips?) Feb 07 2007

I love Mexico. The local food is very safe to eat.  As far as street food, eat where the locals eat. If there are locals at the stand then it is safe. Mexicans also get food poisoning so they don't eat where is isn't safe. Go to Pipi's in PV if you have time. Not very healthy, but really good (although somewhat touristy). The fresh juice stands are also wonderful, and we had some awesome fish tacos near the isle de cuale. Watch out for the time share sharks in Mexico. They are everywhere. Don't take anyone up on anything free (unless you want to be held hostage for a 3 hour presentation). It not worth the free excursion, rum, or t-shirt.

Don't make the mistake that a lot of foreigners make and get sick. A lot of people think that they get sick from drinking local water (which in most of the bigger towns is very safe). They are in actuality getting sick from drinking 6 pina colatas (a natural laxative) and staying out in the sun all day and not drinking water. Drink plenty of water, alcohol in moderation and you will be fine.

As far as exercise walking and swimming will be your best bet. I eat and eat everytime I go to Mexico and never gain weight, because I am constantly active. Your cruise ship will probably have a gym too.

As far as safety you will be fine in the areas you are going to. Just use your common sence same as back home. Don't buy drugs (unless you want to spend the next few years in a Mexican Jail), don't walk in alleys alone, and be aware of pickpockets. The main safety concerns right now are in Mexico City, Oaxaca (had to cancel my trip there recently). Its mostly government protests going on. Check out all travel warnings before you go just in case, but I'm sure you will have a great time.

If you have any specific questions email me at geminmd@yahoo.com. I've done a lot of travel through Mexico.
