Weight Loss What was the smallest size you wore... Jul 27 2006

The smallest I can remember are 5s in juniors, but I was twelve.

I try not to put any weight on sizes (hahahahaha PUN!) because they vary from brand to style.  I've got a business suit and evening dresses that are size 4...and slacks in 6, jeans in 9, medium sweaters, small tanks, large coats...etc.

All the same, I would like to be a consistent size four.  I ALMOST fit into a size 4 pair of slacks from express (I'm in business casual frequently)...so that's my current goal.  I think.

Side effect:  a recent study came out saying that mixing alcohol with low-cal/light juices gets you drunk faster.  Apparently, the sweetness signals your  brain to do...something regarding insulin, but since it isn't real sugar, it makes you process the alcohol faster....yeah.  Something like that.

A bonus if you enjoy inebriation, but mostly a hint/warning for moderation.

Here is the first thing google showed...but I read it in a newspaper.

I have actually signed up to work with a personal trainer, so I will definitely be upping my calories to make up for the extra work.
Maybe I will do less than a 500 deficit to keep from shrinking too fast.  I don't want to look emaciated, and I will need more food to fuel my strength conditioning anyway.

Thanks for the responses (and the compliment!)...but if anyone sees this thread from this point, I'll still take advice!

It is possible you'll gain weight at first, but it will come off more regularly once it gets used to having food to work off of.
I've been doing 1250-1350 cals a day and exercising, maintaining a 500-700 calorie deficit, and weight came off much faster than I thought it would.

The drastic restriction is tempting, but in reality it is counterproductive.  Good job realizing it wasn't healthy, and good luck!

This doesn't really help answer your question, but if you aren't already on birth control, you might want to start.  I started taking it because my cramps were so bad I'd throw up for two days.  It has helped a LOT, and now I have no problems...barely even notice it.

Ice cream machines = bad.  That's really my one weakness....

Yay, Canada!  Absolutely gorgeous.  I've not been to Saskatoon; my last trip went through Regina, but I've never been through a part I didn't like.  Any part of Canada is my favorite place to visit.

(especially grocery stores because you have lots of things that I can't get - and there are big differences with some of the things that I get here)

Joined around the end of May at 5'6", 134.
Currently down to 128, and lost an inch off everything that people measure (even thighs!).

I stick to 1200-1300 cals a day as I am not very active, but I just signed up to work with a personal trainer to get back into the exercise groove.

I just bought out the produce section, too!

Half a papaya (so gorgeously red I couldn't turn it down), bananas, white peaches, white grapes, oranges, apples, sweet potatoes, corn on the cob, mini red potatoes, roma tomatoes....and lots of frozen green things.  I don't have enough time to cook EVERYTHING from scratch!

satchel - ditto the ice cream.  Our halls just replaced the generic chocolate or vanilla soft serve with Edy's.  EDY'S!!!  And four flavors available at any one time!  And oreos and butterfinger and sprinkles to put on it!

I am usually good and get the fat free strawberry...but still...

Our dining hall has a Sbarro's pizza in it, which translated into baked ziti for dinner about three times a week.  Other options at dining halls around campus are Panda Express, Charlies (?) Chicken 'n Sauce, Taco John's, Pizza Hut, McDonald's, Chik-fil-a...

Choosing between fast food chains or salad everyday was...not good.  No wonder this country is so fat.

drea - Collins (10th and Woodburn, across from the big field thingy by the HPER) serves vegetarian and vegan foods regularly.  It's all home-cooked style.  I loved it, but I don't have meal points anymore.  Try it once, if not to gawk at the subculture hippie kids that live there.

phimegaphi - I almost went to UNC!  waitlisted forever, got in, and decided since I had direct admit/honors/scholarships for the business school at IU, I'd pass.  But, I did LOVE it.  I'm an appalachian girl, so the scenery was fabulous for me.  We ate dinner at some mexican restaurant in the 'downtown' area that was good...I'm sure the rest of offcampus is great, too!

Boca is good, but the morningstar spicy black bean burger is AMAZING.  I haven't bought anything since.  It's great with salsa, kind of southwesterny tasting.

The steak strips morningstar makes are also quite good.  I haven't had steak in a long time, but from what I remember, they are remarkably similar.  Great with ketchup!  Mmmmm...classy.

For a fabulous, tofu/veggie kabob:

Brown the entire block in a pan with olive oil.  Then cut into about 8 or so cubes.

In a bowl, add the tofu and whatever fresh veggies you want (mushrooms, grape tomatoes, squash..).  Then prepare this sauce:
3 TBS mayonnaise (non fat, whatev)
2 TBS nonfat plain yogurt
2 TBS fat free Italian dressing
1 TBS Dijon mustard
1 TSP horseradish
...and pour that on the veggie/tofu mix and toss.

Arrange the tofu and vegetables on skewers and broil about 5'' from the heating element for 6 minutes, turn, and broil another 6 minutes, until veggies are tender.

I haven't tried it on a grill, but that might work as well.  The tartness of the sauce really complements sweeter vegetables like tomatoes and red peppers.

haha, no, as a side.  I'm all about random mixes of food, but watermelon sandwich doesn't sound appetizing.

Grilled, though?  Maybe.  Never had a grilled fruit/veggie that I didn't like.

Yeah, if you aren't actually walking, I'd not wear it.  Since it
counts based on being moved (some of them you can hear a bearing, or
something, rolling around), being on a shakey mower - and definitely a
horse - will cause it to say you've walked more than you actually
have.  Whether the amount will be significant enough to worry
over, I do not know.

Wow, thanks everyone!  Definitely learned a bit there...I think doing intervals sounds like a better idea for me.  I get bored really easily on the machines.

Another question, in case the thread isn't dead yet - if I want to be more lean/muscular, do I start out by long, stead, fat burning exercise, or do I head straight into the more intense cardio?

Thankee kindly.

Weight Loss Binge eating problem..please help Jun 15 2006

celeste, I have the same problem!  I didn't even know there was a binge eating disorder until I thought about how an entire day's worth of food in twenty minutes wasn't good.  I always wanted something crunchy at night (HALF A BOX of cereal!), and even telling myself I needed to stop didn't work.

I am currently going to counseling where we are dealing with (among other things) food issues.  I've just started, so we're still covering my background info, so I haven't learned anything about coping with it yet.

You may want to consider finding a counselor to see.  Many universities offer psychological services; mine does, and my first two counseling visits are free, and very cheap after that.  Depending on what you tell the counselor, they may refer you to a psychiatrist who can prescribe you something that could deal with the chemical issues surrounding the need to binge.

Good luck!

Jumping rope...I'm told ten minutes with a rope is like running a mile (at what pace, I don't know).  I think this site says that if I jumped rope for an hour, it'd be about 760 calories burned.
