| Thanks for the prayers, healing light, etc. Her parents said they could feel the energy flowing their way. She lost her fight yesterday. No comments please; just go hug a kid, especially, if you have 'em, yours. |

| The Lounge | 6000 calorie diet.. im not kidding! | Mar 01 2008 02:28 (UTC) |

| I know someone who needed to eat over 9000 calories a day (!!!!!) to maintain his weight -- and he is skinny and shorter than I am. His metabolism is incredibly fast. He's physically active, but even though he's now middle-aged and has an office job, he eats and eats and eats. We used to work on a committee that got together twice a year (people from all over the US), and everyone would watch what this guy ate.... because we are all amazed at the quantity of food he has to pack away simply to maintain an already low weight. | |||
| Weight Loss | Does anyone have a problem that if they eat too littlle food, they lose muscle instead of fat? | Mar 01 2008 02:21 (UTC) |
3 |
| it's not the stomach doing it. It's the way a body preserves itself. It's not normal to eat "too little food." Your body needs fuel, and that fuel is food. If you don't eat enough, your body is going to get rid of tissue that costs a lot to maintain: muscle. Muscle is metabolically more active than fat is, so, eat too little, and you'll lose muscle. Fat will be saved for even leaner (food-wise) times. If you want to lose fat, you have to eat enough, but not too much. That's why a deficit of 500-750 calories is recommended for safe weight loss. |

| Anyone who doesn't believe antidepressants work is welcome to review the stats on teenage suicide, which started going up after black-box warnings appeared on antidepressants (which led to a decrease in their use for that population). Or you could spend one week with my ex while he's not medicated, and one week with him while he is. You'd be able to tell the difference, believe me! |

| I have a three-legged cat. He used to be a four-legged cat who went outdoors (before I got him). Being outdoors led to his being a three-legged cat; he also lost half his tail at the time he became three-legged.
He's an indoor cat now. He used to use Arm and Hammer Super Scoop flushable litter, but that's hard to find now, so he's currently using The World's Best Litter, which I get at Petsmart. It's also a clumping litter that is flushable. It isn't quite as good as keeping down odors, but it doesn't have the "clay cloud" that the A&H had. |

| For a female coworker: "A boyfriend! What a great idea; what's your husband's phone number?"
For a male coworker: "I'm not interested in you that way, but thanks for asking." (This is likely to confuse the male coworker. That's okay; in fact, that's preferable.) For your mom, assuming she has a good relationship with your dad: "You know, Mom, I think when they made Dad, they broke the mold. My standards are as high as yours are, and men like Dad just don't come around very often." (Come to think of it, this would work if your Mom hates your Dad, too... :-D ) For your boss: "I prefer to concentrate on my work; is that okay with you?" (Is a boss really going to say "No" to this? I hope not!) |

| Well, I read it. If his parents need education about bipolar disorder, you might have to educate them. The good news is that THERE IS HELP FOR THIS DISEASE! If they don't understand that, the disease looks much, much scarier.
I'm glad things are better for him right now, that his family is more involved. I think your anger is perfectly understandable; I know I'd be mad, too, in that situation. I hope he gets the help he needs, and I'm glad he's got you for a friend. He will be, too, once he gets into treatment. |

| The Lounge | Really weird question- I get hit on by older guys? | Feb 25 2008 15:46 (UTC) |
3 |
| It's not necessarily context, nor anything in body language. I used to get hit on by guys, many older guys especially, when I had done NOTHING to attract their attention other than exist. Even when dressed like an old-school banker (because I worked part-time in a bank), carrying a bookbag, covered up in a completely unflattering (but very warm!) coat and walking like I was headed somewhere and in a hurry to get there, guys would stop me -- or try to -- and hit on me.
It's something some men do. It's obnoxious as heck. I did NOT like men I didn't know approaching me; it's rude. When I was a few years older than the OP, I worked in a fine clothing store. The store often hired help to assist with the Christmas rush. One assistant manager at one store used to hit on all the young women who worked there. I didn't realize the extent of the problem until a 16-year-old told me she had replied to his ... ah.... invitation with, "I'm jailbait." Good for her! This guy was married with four children; didn't stop him from hitting on anyone. |

| The Lounge | what's the point of marriage? | Feb 25 2008 15:28 (UTC) |

Original Post by aocean:Sure, contracts can help with some. However, the point is that there is NOTHING like marriage except marriage, not in the eyes of the government, the law, many religions, and society. So contracts can be used for those things they can cover, but even with contracts, a couple will NEVER get parity with married couples without marrying. I don't know why you say " As for the societal benefits...well, I refuse to go there. We'll just have to agree to disagree." Agree to disagree on what? Are you disagreeing that there are societal benefits? If so, then yes, we will indeed have to agree to disagree, because I DO find that there are societal benefits (or, if you don't like "benefits," substitute "repercussions." ). If you're not disagreeing about there being societal benefits, then about what are we disagreeing? |

| Contracts and legal arrangements won't give the committed but not married Social Security benefits, rights to pension and other retirement funds, and the same parenting rights that married couples have. Contracts are not a substitute for the legal and societal benefits of marriage. If contracts could cover all of the benefits of marriage, gay couples wouldn't be fighting so hard for the basic right to marry. For those who question the value of marriage, check out gay parenting forums. |

"I think he probably just wants some money of his own" I think this, and the "Um, who me? Ok, I guess so (no thought process utilized)" scenario are both very likely. I think everyone should have some money for which he/she doesn't have to account to anyone. I don't want my husband raising eyebrows at my Oreo cookie expenditures, and I don't want to know how much he's spent on peanut M&Ms! :-D |

| cellulitedelight, I looked up the price for the gardens I mentioned before I posted. They are public gardens, but private events cost, and yes, this one really does charge a minimum of $500 just for the ceremony.
If a public garden knows you're going to hold a wedding on its grounds, it may very well charge for that. I strongly suggest that anyone thinking of holding a wedding in a public space check. Public spaces are for the public -- private events, such as weddings, in public spaces often require permission from officials responsible for the public space, and may very well incur a fee. I have to wonder what kind of tent you'd be renting for $150/day, but hey, if you found a rental that included everything usually used for a wedding for that low a price, more power to you! |

| Nobody said these things are ALWAYS the case, and there were plenty of "maybes" in the original posts. There happens to be plenty of truth in all of the possibilities listed above; some of us are old enough to have seen these possibilities played out plenty of times.
And just because you've never heard the comments that are levied at women who date much younger men, and the men they date, doesn't mean the comments don't get said. They do! |

| GETTING married costs very little: $20 in Michigan for Michigan residents for the license, and the cost of the officiant, which could be nothing if this is a friend or family member doing the honors, or a couple of hundred bucks if you have to shop for someone in the yellow pages or online.
Celebrating getting married is what costs $$$. The hot air balloon idea is great, until you learn that a private hot air excursion costs $900 or so. Tent rentals most certainly are expensive if you're on a budget that balks at a $500 facilities fee for a chapel. Weddings in public spaces usually cost; a garden here that is popular for wedding ceremonies charges $500 and up for having the ceremony in the garden, with the reception co$ting more, and museum rental is way more than that. If you have a friend/colleague/family member who will work with you who is licensed to officiate at weddings and you don't plan to have a dozen guests or more, you may be able to have a park ranger look the other way if you get married in a park or forest. You might look to a local college, private school, or university for a place to wed; they often have pretty gardens and people not really concerned with why folks are standing around in them. If there is someplace special to you and your fiance -- a movie theater, bowling alley, restaurant, store, whatever -- consider having the event there with the blessings of the staff. THAT, you may have very good luck with. People who don't usually throw weddings may love the opportunity to make this happen for you in their theater, bowling alley, restaurant, store, whatever, especially if they get some press out of it! :-) Good luck! And yes, April is a lovely month in which to wed, as is May. I like them so much I got married once in May, and the second time (to someone else) in April. (I also like October. I'll have to save that for husband number 3! :-D) |

| "I do remember when I lost weight last year that I actually lost weight some weeks when I had a few really big cheat days after having so many good weeks. "
This should be telling you something. What you are doing now isn't working. The 1200 minimum is for someone who is sedentary, and that's just to maintain bodily functions, not to fuel hard work. Seriously, on the days you burn 500-600 calories by working out, eat 1700 calories or so. Try that for two weeks, see what happens. I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that you'll see results! |

| My whole body hurts.... Thanks, all, for the recipes; I've gained 10 pounds just reading them! :-D I ended up making 11 dozen or so cookies in addition to pumpkin bread. I'm glad I made the oatmeal raisin cookies, as the other oatmeal cookies there were just that: oatmeal cookies, no raisins. We had TONS of food, so much so that the team will be well-fed this weekend (they are working today and Monday), AND we fed the school's custodial staff and pep band, AND we went downstairs, sat outside the auditorium and sold food during the school musical's intermission after the fundraiser. ("Five cookies for a buck! Five cookies, one dollar! Two sandwiches for one dollar! Fifty cents a soda!") And we STILL had food left over! (It was good, too; Panera bread sandwiches and salads.) As much fun as this last part -- selling stuff at intermission -- was (it was wild!), unless someone makes a big donation in the coming days, the team lost money on the fundraiser, alas! But the cookies were GREAT!!! I've suggested that the team sell cookies and drinks at all school play intermissions. I think that will be one way they can raise money pretty easily. |

| The problem with making cookies is that I love them entirely too much; at least with cake, I couldn't eat any because it'd be completely obvious I'd eaten My husband looked at me as if I'd grown three heads and sprouted horns when I mentioned putting diced apples or butterscotch morsels (oatmeal scotties!) in oatmeal cookies instead of raisins. He didn't say anything; he just stared at me, stared, stared, stared, until I finally broke the silence with something about raisins. He was very good about saying, "Well, of COURSE oatmeal cookies have to have raisins, and only raisins, in them!," without uttering a word. (Gee, I like chocolate chips in mine; this is an abomination, according to him!!) I set out early this morning to make pumpkin bread, but after mixing the dry ingredients, discovered I was out of pumpkin. I also didn't have enough rolled oats to make oatmeal cookies, and I really wanted to get SOMEthing baked right away. So I found this recipe and made it with about half a teaspoon of vanilla and one teaspoon of almond extract, as one of the recipe reviewers suggested. OMG, are these goooooooooood! Since the team colors are lime green and black, I dyed some sugar lime green and black and dipped the top of each dough ball into both sugars. It's too bad the lime green is so pale once it's on the cookie, and the black comes out kind of a dark purple after baking. At least the cookies taste good! Since making the sugar cookies (OMG, are these gooooooooooood!!), I've been to the store which accounts for the bazillion or so oatmeal raisin cookies that have been or are being baked. Also the pumpkin bread. Coconut macaroons .... I'll have to look for the recipe, but making them will be a dangerous endeavor, considering how much I like them! santonacci, do you have a snickerdoodle recipe you like? I've never make snickerdoodles. Lemon cookies are a good idea, too (though those are another type of cookie that, alas, I like entirely too well!) and I'm intrigued by the sour cream cookie idea. Spoiled_candy, might you have a recipe for them? I don't know that I'd make them for the fundraiser, but they sound like just the thing for my husband's birthday! |

| Actually, I think what enters did IS wrong, and it appears she does, too.
Wanting to hack into his email account gave her the information that she needed -- she doesn't trust him. She didn't actually need to hack into it to get that information. If you don't trust the person you're with, get out or fix the trust issues. Trust issues aren't fixed by spying on the other person; that simply compounds them. (I hope I don't need to add that trust issues aren't fixed by paying for hookup sites behind an SO's back, either!) |
