Motivation The Numbers May 06 2008

I absolutely love it!  "I DON'T WANT TO BE A SLAVE TO THE NUMBER."

I am a slave to the number, indeed.  I weigh myself about 3 times a week or more, I obsess over my calorie consumption.  I look to see how much calories/fat intake I've had over the last day/week/month.  I measure myself, I look at my clothing size tags.  UGH! STOP THE INSANITY!

Much luck in your endeavor.  You certainly have the right attitude!! Just hold onto it through the rougher times and it sounds like you'll do fine!  Thanks for some great insight.

Health & Support Alcoholics & Weight loss? May 02 2008

Recovering alcoholic here, ten years sober as of March 3.

I've struggled with weight loss my entire life, and now realize that the same things that made me drink, made me overeat.  I have finally begun using this to count my calories faithfully, and exercise as well.  I am determined to do it, as I think this is my last chance.

My mother died when I was 19, and a friend told me my daughter would experience the same thing if I didn't quit drinking.  That was enough for me.  With the help of AA, my higher power, and a loving family, it has been a struggle, but gotten easier over time.

I have to agree that it seems odd that you're concerned about the 15 lbs, but not so much the alcohol consumption.  Find out why you need to numb your feelings.  I had a memory I had totally blocked out of my mind, that finally surfaced with some treatment.  I was shocked because I wasn't ever all that sure that people could block out memories like that.  But it was a relief that helped in the long run.

Good luck.

Thank you so much everyone for such kind words and support.  It's always harder to get right back to it after a bad day, don't you think? And my calories for Monday were higher than I would have liked, but I was at least more active.

Onward and downward...lol

Weight Loss What is calorie expenditure? Mar 07 2007
08:59 (UTC)

Ok, I wondered about this too, even though I've been all over this site and have been there before.

I think this means, and someone correct me if I'm wrong please, that the difference between expenditure and calories per day intake is your approximate loss or gain potential?

My expenditure is 2300 per day, so if I eat 1200 per day, I should be losing 1100 calories, or roughly 1/3 lb. per day...is that right? So if you were on a weight gain diet, you would want to eat more than your expenditure, I think.

I'm still a bit confused as to how my activity calories burned figures in.  Is that already in my expenditure figure? Or can I add that to the 1100 calories difference in intake?

ugh...math...

My motivation is my daughter's graduation from college in May 2008.  She goes to school 1000 miles away from us, and although she'll be home time to time and see my progress, I will be able to enjoy Boston like I have at no other time when I reach my goal.

Also, I want to be able to go up a flight of stairs free-hand...not have to pull myself up by the banister.  I've always been frightened of stairs because I can't get my fat butt up them without huffing & puffing so badly.

The Lounge Anybody live in Ann Arbor, Mich? Mar 06 2007

Congratulations!  I live in Michigan, but over on the Lake Michigan side of the state.  Lived here all my life - 53 years - and have been through Ann Arbor but never spent any time there.

What I can tell you however, is that it's known as a college town, so there will likely be many people your own age around, and not just ones going to U of M.

It's fairly centrally located to other major cities so if you get a weekend you can take in some things in Detroit, Toledo, or Lansing.

People around the state seem to love either the Wolverines or the Spartans (Mich State), and lay proud claim to the team of their choice, so don't be too offended by their fervor.

Much luck to you.

My husband calls a chimney 'chimley' and instead of deaf it's 'death'...I swear after 29 years he's doing it on purpose now.

Years ago his mother was telling our daughter, who was about 4 at the time, that there was a groesbeck bird in the back yard. She pronounced it 'gross beek' to which our daughter must have heard 'roast beef' because that's what it became known as from then on, the 'roast beef bird'.

I have favorite shows I watch on tv at night with the hubby...but seriously what KILLS us both are the commercials!! I hate the food commercials!! They tempt you into eating...maybe that's why it's so depressing?  All the restaurants and fast food places and cake mixes and sweets.....UGH!  I wish we could legislate to get those limited to only one per hour!

I have a question about the yogurt.  Is it 1 cup yogurt made with skim milk? or 1 cup yogurt and 1 cup skim milk? or 1 cup combination of yogurt and skim milk???

Weight Loss 3,879 calories from peanut butter. Mar 04 2007

Just like everything else that you consume, moderation is the key.  Peanut butter is not evil.  I find that if I have one slice of toast in the a.m. with a tablespoon of peanut butter, it helps curb my hunger and keeps me satisfied throughout the morning.

Too much of anything is bad for you.
