i agree with rachel on the spirophobia - its hilarious. i figured that the proper answer would have been given (spiro's answer) within 5 responses... but no one asked yet why and wherefore of the chest exercises? so, why chest exercises? there are billions online (exrx has loads of course) but advice with no background is pretty much useless... so what is the goal elbow? there are ten different answers to that question - and ya, getting some weights (5 to 25 pound bells to start i guess.... you didn't mention if you are a beginner tho) is a good idea. there are billions of chest exercises to do on the bench as panke listed. but the why is far more important than the how. ~~~ jazz up? hike. swim. bike. kickbox. climbing. et cetera. |

wow. i had no idea this was even a topic for much thought. 'bush women'? i am afraid i am not very social and don't even spend time noticing people so i suppose the bush women exist ~lol~ but i can't recall seeing them. the women who are fully nude and in a chatting gaggle for an hour are annoying, but i figure i am in and out of there because i have a life - and guess that they don't have one. heh heh i am not a hider (was for a bit in middle school) but ya, the super tanned pilates queen waspish yakker types are quite annoying. people should never be hung up on this - men are not as bad even though it works behind a veil of homophobia or whatever - maybe girls should take hint. but then... i go camping fishing or sailing with male friends and it is not a big thing when adult women change in front of adult men, or any combination... whatever. change time is not really convo time, but it is also no big thing. |

i am curious to have nautilus explained to me and how heavy a 4.0 is.
yes, of course you can lose fat from the arms, or anywhere~ it takes time, and keep in mind there is no such thing as spot reduction! work your whole body, it will come off eventually. |

i apologize but please disregard the previous post. "If you want NO BULK, high reps low weights." wrong "I would recommend not going over 5lbs with any excersise aside from your lower half of course." wrong "you could end up looking like a body-builder lady" wrong i am no expert, yet have been lifting, and know women that lift, and have done quite a bit of research along these lines and the truths are that you must lift heavy to look strong, toned, fit and sleek. the only way you will attain huge bulk is to eat mad amounts of calories, take supplements and have loads of testosterone. if you eat carefully with a mind to body recomposition and lift heavy and never take steroids the only result is all around fitness. i have to stop before i go on a total rant here~ 48 year old femme weightlifter in your face

glad you are learning and reading before hand - it will save loads of time in the gym or at home. the above book has got to be great as so many have found their new routines (and new bodies) in it~ learn and read as much as you can. this forum is a perfect start :) one of the oft mentioned sites stumptuous.com is what really started me, and others. super helpful site. keep in mind, there is not much difference between mens and womens bodies in regards to fitness. use information geared towards men in the same fashion~ |

not to keep myself mentally on track as much as turn off this world and have some time where i am not bombarded by people, electronics, music or advertising.
meditation requires no special instructions truly. after my weight set i often close my eyes on the cross trainer and find i slip into the same quiet-mind that i would while making a point to clear my mind. Although, in this day and age it is a lot easier to find zen in the middle of an island, on a dock, in the sun :)

football/soccer. or what i think is referred to here as beer-league baseball. they have loads of games and the whole point is going out later... those who like the game and just like a less serious atmosphere just skip the party :)
or tennis of course, if you have a friend who will meet with you~ |

(grrr) mm hmm joekame, that is a myth. your muscles are the shape they are from now until forever. i would suppose that slight muscles with a little fat are mistaken for 'leaner' muscles and muscles that are maxed and under low body fat mistaken for 'bulky'. how ridiculous really. melkor on reps in a previous thread. think of muscles like a beach ball (sort of).
no way will the long and light approach turn it into a football either... or an air mattress, or a pony -- it is still a beachball. there is no exercise on earth that will 'give you' longer leaner muscles (like a dancer!!! hee hee pilates advertising is so lame). the women you see with long lean muscles are likely tall, have a small bone structure, have parents who have long muscles, have low body fat or a combination of these traits. normally, when these women look super toned and sleek, they lift heavy weights.

as melkor has quoted 'abs are made in the kitchen'
no amount of crunches and junk will give you a flat tummy. if you insist - try Ab Boot Camp. 600 crunches a day and you should be able to hack it right? :) right? |

perhaps, as fat is fat regardless of how it came to be. ask your doctor if this is a fatty deposit of excess skin. there is little that can be done for excess skin except lose the weight, drink lotsa water, and eat clean and healthy. good thing you are young as your skin is very elastic still (on average) and should bounce back eventually~

welllllllll ~ yoga should not make you sweat, with the noted exception of Bikram Yoga where the ambient temperature of the room is increased to 40 degrees. the sweat has little to do with the poses though. Ashtanga Yoga is a fast yoga where you may experience an elevated pulse - but no real sweat. Neither of the aforementioned Yoga are really for the beginner - unless you like to get frustrated with ventures early on and give up quickly.
The stretches and poses are great for a cool down after weight lifting too~ namaste |

"A gym, however, has a duty by virtue of its very nature..." hm. no i liken gyms to the bartenders. they don't really care about your health, it's about money. if they cared about health, all the new years resolution people would stay year 'round. if the girl is still tubby, she is not endangering her health. she is only a victim of bad information, not an exercise disorder.

flattening your tummy? Fork-Put-Downs and Table-Push-Aways are all that will whittle a flabby waist. Toning a tummy? Hard work, like Ab Boot Camp may help. No amount of fiddling around with a swiss ball will flatten your tummy. use the search function to search this forum for other threads on abdominals and fat loss - there are about seven million a day. |

are you using a weight heavy enough to challenge you after 10-12 reps? 3 months is not very long. try another 3 months and track the progress with a measuring tape. This may take a year to see results you want... or longer. ensure you are eating clean and working your whole body to shed fatty deposits.

hoooo hahahah wow. nice. i have heard of using saran wrap and such as well. the effect you are after is akin to a Spa style Thermal Wrap. It don't work that way. this is kind of like an urban myth based partly in fact. if you pay good money to have a wrap done (with or without exercise) it will firm your skin for a short amount of time. a very short time. the effect is mostly useless save for photo shoots and wedding days.

yup. grip it. rip it. deadlifts n squats like most others have mentioned. hiking seems to do wonders, as does climbing. being on an unforgiving trail does something to your butt that no machine can - kick it! :) very similar to ladykelien's mention of stairs n bleachers.

| Fitness | Desk exercises | Aug 01 2008 15:36 (UTC) |
|
everytime i see these 'desk exercises' threads, i want to suggest these: 1] Desk Squats - Crawl under your desk. Somehow orient your head to the right or left and place hands squarely on the underside of desk - shoulder width apart just like everything else is always shoulder width apart. Stand with your feet flat on the floor and about shoulder width apart (toes slightly turned out). keep the abdominals tight and the lower back in a neutral position. Stand upright and squat the desk. simple as that.
2] Dead Desk Lifts - stand at your desk. grasp edge firmly, feet shoulder width apart. Grip it and Rip it! Leave your paperwork and office accoutrement on the desk for added effect. If you can perform these 10-13 times without muscle success please increase weight of desk or have a co-worker pose as best they can on the desk for added weight. |

hm. how big is big? i figure as an athlete (what sort has bearing too) you should have an 'athletic' amount of body fat. are you toned? perhaps you can trick the eye by working on your forearms. of course, this all kind of ties in with the spot reduction myth huh? some may suggest aerobics to cannibalize your muscle... but it just won't work that way. interesting question. |

| Fitness | How could she? | Jul 30 2008 23:39 (UTC) |

wow. look at her closely people. the only thing fake about her is her boobs. man, she really isn't even all that big! i have seen WAY bigger chicks and while i don't think she is hot by any means (but i am also a hetro gal and think she is like really really old... too old for me anyway) she is certainly attractive. kind of. she isn't chopped liver anyway. i can't even say if i am detecting jealousy here or what - have we forgotten that she is in competition mode? like, we all know she does not maintain this look year-round and yea, her tan and the amount of sheen is bordering obnoxious~ i would bet if she were in a more natural pose with less tan and one tiny percent more body fat we would be in some kind of awe.
besides, who is to say who takes roids or not? do these women? or |

| Fitness | is it possible... | Jul 30 2008 23:31 (UTC) |

hmmm this is the sort of thing that weighs on my mind every day. as a size 9 i certainly dont feel like a size nine compared to most girls out there. i have more excess skin than women who have had babies and see friends who are size 14 with way prettier tummies alll the time - and they are not models. i would have to say that 'that' kind of body at size 14 is genetics. i tell myself that since other girls can have the same measurements as me and look better, it just means my body should be a little smaller to carry what it has properly. my 25% fat is covering a whole different make-up of bones, guts, and muscles than what their 25% fat is covering... and in totally different places. that's all ~ does this mean i have to work harder than they do to look the way i want (or like any one of those girls in the photo)? yes. yes it does. so i do. |
