I always use a salad plate and small mug when I serve myself at home - makes the plate look full of food, same with my drink.

Double portions of veggies, half portion of meats.

Weigh and measure occasionally to be sure I'm not serving myself a bigger portion than I think I have.

I choose salad dressings that are moderate in calories and low in sat fat - then I do measure out the portion (usually 2 Tablespoons) and mix with 1/4 cup low fat cottage cheese to put on a big salad.  Really tasty, makes a salad really filling, and accurate for counting fats and calories.  (I wouldn't eat salad if I didn't have a tasty dressing to go on it)

Weight Loss High Blood Pressure Aug 20 2008

Terrific weight loss - be sure to celebrate that!

Llama - I have a friend who took premarin for menopause (an estrogen) and she too experienced high blood pressure.  When she discontinued the drug, her blood pressure returned to normal.

Kouklabunny, there are worse things in life than taking blood pressure medicine.  It is life saving and once your doctor finds the right medicine for you - it's magic.

Also - your pharmacist is actually the best expert to ask about medicines and their possible reactions.  Just call your pharmacy and ask if one of the side effects of your bcp could be high blood pressure - you'll find out in a flash.  Don't wait to see your ob/gyn.

You can cut and paste your analysis into your journal - as long as you permit friends to see your posts, she can see yours - and do the same for you to see.

How nice that you and your wife are using cc as a way to encourage each other.  I do believe you know how to be your wife's friend :)

I remember hearing that Mary Lou Retton and Dorothy Hamill - small female Olympic athletes from the past ate 15,000 calories a day.  Then, when they ended their careers, they rapidly gained weight because they had difficulty retraining their eating to be less.

I'm grateful I'm not much of an athlete!  I have trouble enough with balancing calorie intake vs. burn living a reasonably sedate life!!

Weight Loss When to start counting again? Aug 13 2008
21:10 (UTC)
1

When I began CC several years ago, counting kept me honest and I lost 20 pounds.  When I stopped counting, I gradually increased portions and made poor choices and voila - I've regained what I lost.

Now, I count, not so much for the calorie content issue, but for the analysis.  I'm paring down my sat fat, total fat and calories - I love having all that information at hand to help me learn daily combos of food that work within a low fat eating style.

I believe I will continue to count what I eat, because I've proven to myself that it works for me and without it - I don't do as well.

Foods too much dairy?? Jul 27 2008

I think dairy is good for you, but that does sound like more than enough.  Whether or not it is bad for you depends upon what else you are eating.  The dairy will give you plenty of protein, but are you eating veggies and fruit and some grains as well??

I recently bought fat free yoplait, and yikes!  It's full of high fructose corn syrup, which is thought to cause you to eat more.

So as for me, my opinion is that you may eat dairy and enjoy it - just read labels and be sure you are eating what is good for youi.

Weight Loss The cost of food... eat healthy cost a lot. It is really hard for me to purchase healthy food... any one else in this situation? Jan 23 2008

When I cooked for a family of five - I watched the grocery sales and planned menus that used ingredients on sale... especially meat.  If chicken was on sale, I'd buy three or four chickens (whole chicken is cheapest) and I'd cut off the breast meat and freeze it for later, then throw the rest in a dutch over with water, celery tops, onion bottoms and carrot tips and bottoms (the pieces you usually discard when chopping)  It makes a great broth, and you can strain and toss the veggies, pick the meat from the carcass, skim off the fat after refrigerating the broth, freeze 1 cup portions of meat and broth and you are instantly ready to make soups or cassaroles.

I also made the cassaroles, planning on chicken ones.  I would keep one in the refrig for a meal that week and freeze the rest for another time.

I did the same with beef and pork.... so that my refrig was full of cassaroles ready to cook of all types.  Worked well and saved lots.

I would do all of this on Saturday afternoon.  Everything I bought fresh I processed by peeling, chopping, slicing, etc.  If I did serve a side dish of cooked veggies and have a few spoonfuls left, I scraped them into a freezer container marked "soup" same with veggies that needed to be eaten or tossed... chop and drop in the container.  When the container was full, I made soup.

Not wasting food helps a lot in saving on the food bill!  Sadly, my kids never knew how to cut a piece of meat with a knife and fork because all they ever had was meat as flavoring, already cut up in soups, stews and cassaroles.

Weight Loss What's the 1st thing you will do for yourself when you hit your goal weight? Jan 22 2008

I'm going to go to Milwaukee, WI - go to Boston Store and buy the cutest outfits I can find.  I'll put on the favorite outfit...Then I'll go to the cosmetics counter for a makeover and buy everything that looks good on me, then I'm going to a stylist and get the cutest haircut they give.

When I get back home, I'm making dinner reservations at the nicest restaurant, get a manicure and pedicure, put on my wedding dress - use the makeup, fix my hair and sweep my hubby off his feet!

And then, I will finally look like I've felt inside for a long, long time.

Weight Loss I think my family is going to sink my weight loss goals... I am feeling really alone. Jan 22 2008

In a perfect world, our families would stand beside us and do everything possible to encourage us in our efforts to lose weight.  Perhaps we would not even be the size we are if we lived in a perfect family.

Life happens.  My hubby feels like he encourages me when what he is doing is not encouraging.  He can't help it.  He doesn't know unless I tell him.

Bless his heart, hubby has will power to put a bag of malted milk balls in the freezer and take out two or three to eat after a meal.  When I'm sneaking them out two or three at a time every few hours, he exclaims "You have to learn to just have a few!" NOT ENCOURAGING.   Makes me mad.  Why does he have to bring in sweets when he knows I have no will power?  Why does he scold me like a child?  Why am I sneaking them when he can't see... acting like a child?  Well, it's all because of me, not him.

Put your frustration and anger from not being supported into the hard work of staying on track!  Think of ways to be smarter about eating despite their temptation.

The blessing of CC is that you are not alone!  We are here and you can vent at us day or night, and someone will be here to encourage you.  So stay strong!!

Weight Loss How do I find "filling" low calorie foods? Jan 16 2008
22:29 (UTC)

I believe we all have to "test" our bodies for what satisfies us the longest when we eat.

I've learned that a 3 oz portion of meat will satisfy me better than 3 oz of bread or potato.  I've learned that Fiber One Cereal (60 cal for 1/2 cup) will satisfy me better than 2 cups of Cheerios.  I've learned that adding cooked beans to my cooked veggies will really help keep me full.

When I really want to "feel full" I will stir fry a huge skillet of veggies and eat them over steamed rice or whole wheat couscous - a big meal with very little calories for the amount.

So don't be discouraged.  Try our suggestions and be creative.  You can eat steak for breakfast, cereal for lunch and a fruit bowl for supper.  Sounds to me like your challenge is to learn what is a filling portion of food that has fewer calories!  Best wishes!

Weight Loss low calorie breakfast anyone? Jan 16 2008

I like Fiber One (60 Calories for 1/2 cup) and skim milk (80 Calories for 1 cup)  That's 140 Calories which would permit a small serving of fruit and still be under 200 calories.  (Great for fiber too)

The frozen meals are an option for portion control.  Why not make your own?  Cook healthy meals then freeze individual portions - take them in a container to work and heat them up.  That's what I do...

Use an icecube tray to hold little portions of food to freeze, then pop them out into a zip freezer bag - use a permanent marker to label what's in the bag.  I do this with soups, leftover veggies, leftover cassaroles.

You can eat right at school!

  • Ask for more veggies and less starches.
  • Remove and do not eat any skin or crust on meats
  • Eat half and throw away the rest if it looks fattening
  • Ask for skim milk or water to drink
  • Give your dessert away to someone else
  • Eat green: meaning head for any green food
I have no idea if your school cafeteria serves fattening foods or has a healthy selection... but you can eat smaller portions of what is fattening and it will reduce calorie intake.

Mind over matter - you know what to do!

I think skim milk is a wonderful food for dieting. I've never thought of heating and sweetening it - sounds delicious.

If you are female, you are doing yourself a big favor to eat calcium rich foods. And if you are a teenager, you are suggested to drink 4 or 5 cups of milk a day.

I'm 54 and I've used Signature Club A Advanced formula 5 essentials cream for years.... you buy it from Home Shopping Network (HSN.com)

It is $25 per bottle, but often goes on a two for one sale. It has an eye cream as well as a general face cream... and it's really, really good.

Just be sure you didn't overestimate your amount of activity per day.  I agree with changeofheart... lucky!!

I suspect you need to eat some early morning protein to keep yourself from becoming hungry.  I think an egg instead of one of the fruits would help.

Congrats on the high fiber diet!!  I always struggle to get in 30 grams a day.

Weight Loss Do you journal? May 23 2007
13:40 (UTC)

I use the journal on this site nearly every day.  I limit who can view to friends only (that keeps it from being "Googled")

I record each morning's weight (yeah, I know the site has a graph, but I like to see the progress in narrative, not charts.)  I write about what my motivation has been like, what set backs I've had, what tasted good or bad, what inspires me to do better.

Sometimes, I put daily goals of what I want to accomplish (like how many glasses of water, how much exercise, reminder to not eat after 8pm, etc)  And as I accomplish these goals, I change the lettering color.

Experts say that a daily journal about eating is a good way to stay motivated for weight loss.  From time to time, I review my past entries, just for the fun of seeing what I felt or did a few weeks (months) back.

Best wishes on successful weight loss!

Foods Diet coke?? how bad is it really? May 21 2007

My former hubby drank diet coke instead of water for years - he got kidney stones from it.  My son, who drank diet coke instead of water for about six years - got kidney stones from it.

Both of their doctors told them to stop drinking diet coke.  Either drink a diet white soda (like Sprite or 7up) or drink sugared soda less often.  Personally, I think you would be best to drink water, experimenting with flavorings such as lemon, lime, etc that are natural.

Whenever a restaurant refuses to give nutritional information, its usually hard to find good choices.

If I were going, I would either order one of their salads, or I would order a country dinner plate of either grilled porkchop , chicken tenderloin or spicy grilled catfish - and for sides, sweet whole baby carrots and turnip greens.

If the portions are huge - ask for a to-go carton right away, then put half of the food in it and only eat what's left on your plate.

Stay away from the biscuits and bread.  Don't order dessert.
Foods are egg beaters any good? May 13 2007

Because I just hate to throw away the egg yolk - I buy egg beaters. Then, I take a 1/4 cup container and mix in a whole, fresh egg and use that for scrambling or omelets. It tastes better and you get a bigger portion for just a few more calories and no more fat than one egg.

Be sure you use the tools on this site. I checked your BMI at 5'8" and 135 - it would be about the least you should weigh and be healthy. Your current weight is at the highest amount to be healthy.

Depending upon your age, you might want to weigh a bit more - 140 to 145.

Exercising will slender you down, even if your weight is a bit more. Best wishes for a successful weight loss.

Yeah, the lighter you weigh, the less calories you need to burn to maintain good health.

I've had to increase my exercise to make up for the difference, as I am short and 1200 calories a day without extra exercise takes a long time to lose a pound.

Congrats on the 2 pound loss!!
