there are also plank variations.  one is an elevated plank, where your elbows rest on a swiss ball and your feet are on an hard surface level with the ball.  i have not tried this one myself, but am about to embark on it this week!

Fitness Treadmill vs outdoor running Aug 12 2009

I run on a treadmill b/c I refuse to run in a busy city--too many people.  I do put the treadmill on a slight incline (1.5) in order to mimic possible hills.  It's not as pretty or fun as running outside, but there's no one in my way ;)

You should be fine jumping into a 5K without running outside first, but I'd be wary of pushing to yourself too hard.  It will feel different, and it's possible you'll feel more tired.  In the end, I guess my best advice is just to enjoy the run.

Goodluck!

Honestly, I did not have a butt until I started doing squats about 8 months ago.  And I've been a runner/jogger for about 5 years.

NROLFW has some very cogent arguements about women overdevloping the front muscles of their body as opposed to the back, thus setting us up for potential injury and poor alignment.  That was enough to get my to try weight lifting.

Pardon me for a brief vent...

I started doing HIIT on the treadmill at my gym about a month ago.  HIIT was a replacement for a long slow run I was doing, which wasn't really neccessary as I'm not training for anything long distance.  At any rate, I'll do 3 min warm-up, 30s @ 8.6, 2m @ 3.3, and then get up to about 9.0 on the 7th or 8th cycle.  It's awesome.

However, from reading the threads, I don't think I'm going "all out".  I'm going to switch to running outside, but I live in NYC and I'm dreading running into someone, or some pulled up sidewalk.  Keep your fingers crossed for me.  There is a track in my neighborhood, but it's pretty far away.

Vyperman, I know you recommend the bike, but I looooove to run....

I'm at work too!  Until midnight.  There are people in the office, but none of my office buddies have arrived yet.  I'll either read or watch Hulu.

I sprint now!  9.2 on the treadmill.  Makes me feel like a warrior.

And I used a swiss ball for the first time yesterday.  I fell off trying to get into position a few times, but I stuck with it.  Who cares if people at the gym laugh; it's good to get a laugh when you work out!

i agree with valpal.  no need for style.  My favorites: i swiped a pair of my husband's mesh nike shorts--they're super breathable and b/c they're reversable, the material is too thick to get "caught up" anywhere it shouldn't be ;)

Where are you getting them?

I'm no expert, but if they're side stitches, I usually get them if I've eaten within the hour before I run.  Also, if I need to drink water right before the run, I do sips.

This one is pretty plain, but it almost tastes like ice cream: freeze a peeled banana in a plastic baggie.  If anyone knows a good way to make it more interesting, do let me know!

I find that keeping calories in the range you are comfortable at but reducing carbs & using protein & fats to balance it out makes a difference.  I try to keep to a 45% carbs, 30% protein, 25% fat breakdown per day, no matter how many calories I eat.  If nothing else, it seems to work if I keep my carbs at only about 50% of my intake per day.  Hope that helps.
