| At 4%, you start sacrificing body fat that cushions your organs. Anything above that is superficial fat.
My issue is extra skin which I know will tighten up as my build increases. |

| Feel free to AIM me sometime (chiefpack86). I am an engineering student so my AIM is on almost all the time for research crap. You seem like you have a ton of questions, and that might be an easier way for you to get them quickly. Kell might have a leg-up on me about the running, though, because I am more wanting to do an ironman 70.3 rather then a marathon.
Anyway, Gatorade is great.......after you run. I mean, it has all these nifty sugars and electrolytes, but you aren't really lacking in those until after your run so all it does before a run is make you feel like your mouth is drying up. Powerade Option is my favorite thing to drink before and after a work-out. Propel is ok, but I don't like the taste...honestly they are about equal. Water is, of course, the best thing for ya since it helps flush your system out...always a good thing, especially if you take suppliments like creatine or vitamins (because they build-up in the liver which can cause issues). I have issues just drinking plain water...I just don't like the way it tastes. Anyway, I like this CrystalLite stuff that you can get in the little cans. You can just make a quart at a time and just keep taking glasses of it through-out the day. I probably forgot something, but I am sure these other guys will fill you in. |

| lil - oh, by no means drink right before you run.....that makes them REAL bad. I am talking more about the hydration you get from drinking water over a long period, not from drinking right before you run.
healthy - "Drinking Coffee" must be an idea that is related to taking caffiene pills before a work-out...it works ok. What this is running off of is the idea that you can stress your muscles much, much more if you have more energy. Before I do this, I would start creatine loading. Caffiene burns in a lot more unnatural way then the natural glycogen that exists in your muscles which CAN cause injury (since you will be tempted to overload what your joints can take). I would really suggest looking at Creatine techniqes if you are looking for some extra "oomph" in your work-out. This only applies to actually working out anaerobically. Some people claim caffiene will help in running, but I have had the complete opposite experience unless I was dong sprints in which case it helped some. It will dehydrate you, though, so it will make your stitches feel worse. Is pushing yourself good? Hell yeah, it is. There are a lot of people that claim that this medical research says this and that medical research says that...blah blah blah blah. Experience shows that as long as you don't suffer from heart issues, pushing yourself is great. I knew one distance running that use to say that if you didn't feel a little nauseated (sp?) after a running work-out, you didn't run hard enough. DISCLAIMER: My spelling looks like crap, but honestly right now I don't care...it's after midnight :-p. |

| Better hydration. I know EXACTLY what you are talking about it because if I am not hydrated, I can't go half a mile before it starts to hurt.
You really need to begin hydration 2 or 3 days before your activity so your system can absorb the water and saturate. It will also keep your joints lubricated. Anyway, this means that if you are wanting to run every other day, just start drinking a lot more water every day. I shoot for 120 ounces everyday, but that is for several reasons that may not apply to you. I will say that I have felt a lot better since I started drinking 120 ounces, though. |

| I did get a bit of a kick out of this, I have to admit. There are a couple guys at school (true gamers....Lord they get on my nerves) that were giving me crap about my little IBM Thinkpad. I just look at them now and ask them if they have any burns ;) Anyway, did you guys hear about that dude that had his laptop in his pick-up truck and it burnt the entire pick-up to the ground? He said he had several ammo boxes in there (he was hunting and had his Dell there for his GPS) and so him and his hunting partner had to "hit the deck". Scary, but he admitted it was a little funny in retro-spect. Do word as to whether Dell is going to buy him a new truck or not... EDIT: You know, if I was a nerd, I would so get the hydrogen-cell battery you can get for these Thinkpads. 8-hours of battery life, full throttled...haha! |

Some women do gain more muscle mass, but they don't look masculine. I have seen some of the girls in the gym that [complain] (edited for your approval) about looking masculine.....it's all in their heads.
I mean, there are repercussions for what you do and do not do so if you do a ton of aerobic activity and no weight lifting...just remember that. ;) |

But, just like the "thermal death of the universe" theory, I don't believe in the catastrophic event of "global warming" because there is no substantial proof of it. |

| Fitness | Just do cardio? | Aug 16 2006 05:11 (UTC) |

| Wouldn't hurt, as long as you are still getting a full-body work-out between the days you do weights. If anything, I have always heard from a lot of trainers that you don't start getting serious benifits from cardio work-outs until after 30 minutes into your exercise, though I am sure it changes from person to person.
It might be worth it to alternate between days of pure weights and pure cardio. |

| GNC stuff. I know a lot of the athletes on our football team and basketball team (division 1 ball, so they must be doing something right) use "Extreme Whey" which is a even more refined version of "100% Whey" that most people get at GNC. It's a little more pricey, but has less fat.
Muscle Milk is good, but it is really not the best thing if you are trying to get big and cut...just if you are trying to get big. :) |

| I don't know what your work-out regimines are, but keep in mind that if you have started lifting weights at all or running or anything, your bone density could have increased some which would make you shrink some in theory...
...but you might want to check this theory out with some of the medical students on this site. |

| nomoreexcuses: just read the media disputes, what are you, high? The only time the media reports on it, it's society going to hell in a hand-basket. Good news doesn't sell newspapers. Like I said, there will always be extremists that are telling us this is a big deal because an ice cube melted on their back-porch or something, but there is just too much of a lack of material evidence to support any kind of catastrophic meltdown of the earth. Actually, if I recall correctly, we were all headed for a massive ice-age 5 years ago or so. Just wait, you same people will be complaining of how our meddling is causing the next ice-age. EDIT: BTW, Al Gore is HARDILY a reliable source of information. You know, he invented the internet.....;) |

| Arnold Schwarzeneggger's book about body building mentions the same thing. He mentions that many women complain that they don't want to look unfeminine so they just do a whole lot of aerobics.
Little do they know that later on when their muscles are atrophied to the point that they have to use a walker to get around, they wonder if they should of lifted weights. Weightlifting is good for the preventitive measures if nothing else. |

| Haha, I did want to add this, though. This is something I ran across a while back and thought you guys would...well, many of you won't like it, but I am sure it will put the woe-is-us monster in a temper-tantrum.
"Perhaps because there's little incentive for scientists to do anything but emphasize the negative and the destructive. Alarming news often leads to government funding, funding generates research, and research is the key to scientists' professional advancement. Good news threatens that arrangement. This is the reality that all scientists confront: every issue, be it global warming, cancer or AIDS, competes with other issues for a limited amount of government research funding. And, here in Washington, no one ever received a major research grant by stating that his or her particular issue might not be such a problem after all." http://www.cato.org/dailys/11-07-04.html Argue with CATO....good luck. I really am not trying to sow discord, I just see these wacko pseudo-scientific views on things and it bugs me. I am not saying that I know everything about this subject because honestly I don't care enough to learn about it since I know it's not an issue. I am just saying that from the little bit I have seen and heard and read from different credible sources, all of these weird things people claim are due to global warming are just silly. It's not worth getting another wrinkle on our foreheads worrying about something that isn't an issue. ......we should bring back the thermal death of the universe... |

| People don't agree because something can't be proven. This is something that is physical to the point that we have the science to look at it and with global warning, even WITH all of our science, people STILL don't agree on it. This is EXACTLY like the whole "thermal death of the universe" theory about entropic death.....every so many years, a group of scientists come up with something stupid like this and people believe it for a while, then after much argument, everyone agree's its all crap. And I know it'll never go away. There are still some people that believe in the "thermal death of the universe" and that idea has been laughed at by the scientific community since...what...the 1860's or 1870's? EDIT: BTW, as far as the engineer thing goes, being an engineer doesn't mean I'm in a lab coat with my TI calculator with an "open mind". Open minds in engineering blow up shuttles and ram billion dollar probes into the surface of Mars. Also, I just want to make sure you guys understand, the earth DOES heal itself at a rate about equal to how much we "hurt" it in today's society.... I am sure there will be some people that try to argue with that, but that is just the nature of the doom's-day globalwarming crowd, I guess. Woe is us. |

I know that a lot of girls around campus will use Underarmor and Nike sports bras...not that I am looking. But, yeah, those seem to be working for other people so you can look into those. I don't know where they would have those, but I have been to Dick's quite a few times since July and they seem fully stocked with those things for runners and whatnot. |

| Not a whole lot, but some. ...maybe, and this is a shot in the dark figure, 5 lbs if you are REALLY avid.
Are you WANTING to do some strength training, or are you just doing push-ups and squats just for the sake of fitness? Just curious. |

| Fitness | Sore muscles, is there anything to help the healing?? | Aug 15 2006 05:13 (UTC) |
|
| Trying a "bit" won't do much. Basically, you go on 4-5 days of "loading" where you are intaking about 20 grams a day, then take 5 grams from then on. You should be able to feel a difference in recovery time by the end of the loading period.
I just realized that my last statement came across a little mean, but I think you get the jist of what I am saying :). Good luck!!! |
|||
| Fitness | Sore muscles, is there anything to help the healing?? | Aug 14 2006 22:33 (UTC) |
3 |
| Depends what kind of soreness and what you are aiming for. If it's what I am thinking of, it's just part of weight lifting.
The actual moment you "tear" muscle is when you are performing eccentric flexes...in other words, when you are applying force in one direction, but you are forced in the opposite (i.e., muscle failure is the most extreme form of this). What you are probably feeling is the tearing of your muscles. Flood your system with complex proteins like whey and you will recover much quicker. If you want to be feeling decent within the next 24-48 hours, you may want to look at Creatine. Don't be afraid of Creatine. As long as you only take 5g a day, you are straight. |
