Weight Loss Water question - cleanest water? Dec 22 2006
09:32 (UTC)
1
i work in the environmental/water sector - but in europe - so i don't know the regulations in the usa

over here tap water needs to comply to a certain standard (which is comparable to the standard of bottled "spring" water) - there's a different regulation for bottled "mineral" water - wich doesn't need to comply to the same standard (it can have actualy a higher concentration of certain minerals then the tap water/spring water rules allow or even the levels that are obliged in the food-processing industry - so if you're on a special low sodium diet or need to be carefull with other minerals - always check the analysis on the label - too much of anything is never a good thing! - or have some variation!)

because of my professional experience i know the source of both bottled water and  tap water ( which is in some cases just the same -  when they both pump groundwater from the same aquifers - but the price is always very different!) - but as said before i don't know the regulations in the USA

the tap water supliers here need to do regular tests - it's a bit of a professional habit but i always check the labels for any water i drink and i know the composition of the water i drink at home from the tap - so i do drink tap water (but i always let the tap run for a while - so i don't drink water that's been standing around in pipes all night) + i also drink bottled water but only if it complies to "my standards"! My favourite is spa - because it is low in salt.

( i could talk about waterlegislation all day long - but  i'm gonna stop here )

The Lounge I bite my nails - please help! Dec 13 2006

well - not sure i can help - but i've been biting my nails since i was a child - i'm (almost) 27 now and i have never been able to stop for a long time

i usually can stop for a couple of weeks using bitter tasting nail polish (byte-X) - but when i stop using the polish - it doesn't take very long untill i start biting again

i really don't like the polish because the taste rubs of - so if you eat a sandwich with your hands - it also tastes bitter!

i'm a very nervous person (i also always wobble my legs & stuff) and have a stressfull job - so for me it's easier to stop during holidays - i try to be concious of my stresslevels when i'm trying to stop - but i bite my nails almost subconciously - even when i'm sitting in my couch in front of the tv

i have a friend who does fake nails - and she said that this could help me - but it costs a fair bit of money - and i'm not willing to spend that amount for something that might only be another temporary solution.  i also thought about hypnosis, but i would like to hear from someone who has tried this.

i stopped again last week with byte-x and some new found will-power - so i haven't bitten my nails in a week - and i love how i can use them now for opening things !

The Lounge Ever heard of the Montignac Method? Dec 09 2006

Montignac was a big hype over here in belgium a couple of years ago (end 90s) - in every store you could find montignac-chocolate, montignac-tomatosauce, ... His book was a bestseller and there was even a word : you could 'montignac' instead of 'diet' ...

a big hype - but not much substance if you ask me ...

i found a good article that looks with some scepsis at his method - it 's in dutch - so i don't think it will help you - but it looks at the "science" his books were based on (they asked his publishers his scientific sources) - and its very weak to say the least ...

so if i were you, i wouldn't start spending my money on montignac-products  ... i think portion control and healthy eating will do the trick better !

when i got the verdict "full grown" at age 14 and 5ft2 my doctor advised me to get more exercise (i thought he said swimming) - so i could grow another 0,5 centimeter ( this was the maximum possible according to my x-rays - which is almost nothing)

i didn't start doing sports -   i'm still 5ft2 ...  so maybe start swimming ?
Weight Loss BMI Question Dec 01 2006
16:36 (UTC)
2
i know this one !

if you work in kilos (weight) and meters (height) - like us europeans - there's an easy formula:

BMI = weight / (height*height)

pe : 55 kilo / (1,6 m * 1,6 m) = 21,5 BMI

i suppose for pounds and inches you have to convert to kilos and meters first ... wich makes the formula probably a little more difficult !

that movie was a real eye opener - it shocked me that even in the "healthier salads" there was a lot of junk - it really put me of of fastfood-places

i was also really shocked by the portions in the american fastfood restaurants -  those supersize meals and - a 1 liter can of coke !!!! It was the first time i saw something like that - i can only hope that things like that are an exception and not standard ...

let's compare ...

in belgium you pay for 1 us gallon (3,79 liter) :

4,82 euro / 6,18 dollar (Super)
or
3,98 euro/ 5,10 dollar (Diesel)

now ... that puts things in perspective :-)

I?m 5?2? ? when I was 14 years old I had my back x-rayed and the doctor could see that I was already ?full-grown? then.  The funny thing is I can still fit in some of my t-shirts/tops from when I was 14. I?m 26 now ? so yes I definitely don?t carry my weight in ?the chest department?.  I do however carry it all on my butt :-)

I weigh about 55 kilo (121 pounds) now (I?ve come down from over 60 kilo/132 pounds) ? and I?m very happy with my body at this weight ? I?m trying to maintain it.

Pant shopping can be very frustrating ? in some shops I don?t even bother fitting ? they don?t have pants for women with some serious bootie! I always go back to the shops where i already found a fitting pair ? looking for a similar model to fit around my hips and waist.   And luckily my MIL is a good seamstress :-)

I also look totally ridiculous in those cropped pants that you see everywhere ? I guess I?ll just stick with my regular pants!

hey erin,

i also like my beer - but i try to limit my consumption!

especially in this warm weather (i crave cold rain!) - a nice chilled beer tastes really good !

when i looked up the calorie numbers for beer for the first time - i was actually quite surprised how (relatively) low they were - so i rather indulge in a beer than in ice cream in this hot weather ...

when surfing i found this site about beer :  http://www.beer-and-health.com/  - there's lots of info on there if you're interested !

I'm a geologist :-)  But i don't do any volcano climbing - i have a government desk job ... so i sit behind my computer screen all day ... my only exercise is walking to the fax machine or copy machine!

i have yourself!fitness for a couple of weeks now ... (after i asked about it here on the forum)

and i'm already totally addicted :-) I already bought extra hand weights and a step so i can do more exercicses

i love that i can do the workout at home (where no one can laugh about my uncoordinated moves) - that you see in wich pace you have to do them - that they explain how you should do them - that you have to plan your workouts for the next week and if you stick to them you get rewarded - ... for me it's a great motivation to do some exercise !

slappy > i think the  x's have to do with straight edge ... or kisses :-)

here's the link:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straight_edge

"The X is considered both a mark of negation and a mark of identity. Attaching the X to one's name or band name is common practice for straight edgers. For example, 'John Smith' would become 'johnXsmith', or 'xjohnx'. "Straight edge" is sometimes abbreviated sXe (S.E. plus an X) following much the same logic and hardcore is sometimes abbreviated "hXc"."(Wikipedia)

ah plume - i see you're belgian too :-)

i also have a sweet tooth - but i find it very difficult to control

i still miss everything sweet and sometimes i slip

yesterday my boyfriend was eating candy right in front of my nose and i just had to have some too - so i ate one of those "vampire teeth" - but i could leave it at one piece - wich is a great accomplishment (for me)

most of the time when i really miss sweet foods - i try to eat some fruit (rapsberry, strawberry, apple, ...) at least it's healthier than cookies and cakes :-)

>nmeier : i saw that sportopolis (there is one in jette on the vub campus site) has a summer promo for two or three months  + you can get a discount if you are a student - maybe it's already too late - but worth checking (its 75 euro for juli+august all in at student rate)

concerning the swimming pools - when i worked in brussels a lot of colleagues went during lunch break - that was not to busy - i usually go to the local swimming pool late in the evening or early in the morning - normally sunday afternoon is way too busy ! but maybe with soccer and the tour de france a lot of people will be sitting in front of the tv

it's not that difficult - i'll try to explain but my itunes is in dutch so the names may be a little bit different

in itunes - click right on the "elfje's ipod" (or in your case "finewine's ipod" - with the little ipod logo in front) - you should be able to choose "options for ipod"

then you see a menu with different tabs - you should pick the "ipod" tab

then you see a tab called photos/pictures - you need to choose your wanted  photo directory ( i created one especially for my ipod) - and check the box in front and also check the "copy all pictures"

push ok - synch with your ipod ... and there you go

I have an ipod nano 2 Gb - and I love it !  I use it when I'm on the train to work or when I'm riding my bike.  I find that 2 giga is enough for me for those purposes.  Right now there's 311 songs (22 hours) of my favourite music on it and also a bunch of pictures (of my family, friends, my house, ... when i go somewhere and i meet someone i haven't met in a long time - i like showing off my pictures).  I really like the simplicity op the iTunes program - it's really easy to work with.

One remark : You need some protection for the screen (it scratches easy) + i have also bought a cute blue leather bag to put it in (so if it should fall it is at least a bit protected) - i know there are a lot of different options if you should use for running (on a necklace - on a band round your arm, ...) - since it was a present from my boyfriend it also has a romantic message (with my name in it) engraved on the back !

I also have an old (well - several years old - from way before the whole light mp3player/ ipod trend) mp3player from creative with a harddisc - where i can put 30 gig of music on - i used to take this with me on holidays (i could easily put it in a socket) - but this weighs a lot more in comparison - and takes a lot more space in my purse on the train (with the harddisc - i would't use it for biking eather - because off all the movement and shocks) - but nowadays those ipods with harddisc don't weigh much either ...

ah i have a couple of stupid fireworks stories

- my uncle has a big backyard that's next to a railway - on the 1st of january we were shooting fireworks in his backyard when all of a sudden we saw smoke coming from behind the railway (which lies higher than the yard - and has a border of dry grass) apparently we set fire to the railway border - luckily we were able to put the fire down quickly with buckets of water

- on the 1st of august in switserland (national holiday) i once saw someone who aimed his fireworks wrong (instead of vertical it went horizontal) and set fire to his bag of other fireworks - that was really something - it was shooting in all directions - very dangerous - and the same day we saw the two kids in the building in front of us at their balcony shooting fireworks - of course one bounced into the ceiling - leaving the balcony in smoke - so the two kids had to jump off the balcony (1st floor) - up on the roof of their fathers car ( lucky for them there wasn't any damage to the appartment, the car or themselves)

so beware of fireworks ...

i have the same problem - i just don't feel for breakfast

i used to eat nothing untill lunch - but since i've been on CC i've been forcing myself to eat at least something small

so now i eat a yoghurt at work in the morning (round 9'o'clock - i get up at 7 but then i really can't eat anything)

i blame my natural biorythm - when i was at university during the exam period  i stayed up untill 3:00 at night and then got up at 11:00 - this is how i would live if i wouldn't have a job - i'm just not a morning person
