Foods veggies on the go? Nov 25 2009

Have you tried putting salad in a cheap Gladware container, or even making a veggie sandwhich or pita wrap. They travel fairly well in a Gladware container.  (you can used dressing packets or use a smaller container (I take my lunch to work and use these, though I have access to cooking and a refrigerator0

I assume you dont' have access to a microwave during day. But there are many veggie dishes that don't require cooking that would travel well. Oranges also work great, and you can use any empty bagor container for the peels until you can dispose of them., also Grapes, strawberries etc.. Just switch from baggies to reusable containers, if you have room for them.

If you have access to a microwave at school, leftovers from dinner would also be a great way to get healthy food cheaply

The Lounge Do you have a "hippie" name? Nov 25 2009
17:05 (UTC)

My name is rather normal, but not common. However being an August baby with the name Holly, does get annoying sometimes, especially around the holidays.

My mom's name is Marcella Appolina and my dad's name was Nordine Milo (my brother became Milo Dean) so unusually names are no stranger to me.  Even worse my mom has sisters named Magdalena (Maggie), Floretta (Sandy) and Hedwig (Heddy), and a brother names Aloyisious (I think I spelled that wrong).

I think the oddest name I can recall was a girl I went to high school with for a short time whose name was of all things Honey. And yes she did get all the jokes.

I think as long has meaning and sounds as good on a 40 year old as it does on a 2 year old, go for it. Later the kid will pick what she wants to be called or earn a nickname, but that's up to him/her.

As much as I dislike my ex, I do like the fact that the oldest son in the family has his fathers first name for a middle name. I continued that without meaning to. My son is Warren Michael (again "normal" but uncommon. I didn't want him to have the same name as 10 other boys in his class), his father is Michael Kenneth, and his grandfather was Kenneth Walter, Great grandfather was Walter something or other.

I also had a good friend in high school name Erla Mae (as in Early May, her birthday was the end of April).  She has sisters named April, June, Julya and Holly. (sensing a theme here)

I would just bring it over. Also I would definately check into the elder care services in your area. There are many services (depending on where you live) that exist to help care for seniors, especially those who may not have someone else.

I might also stop in ocassionally for a welfare check, just to chat or bring some food the rest of the year as well, another words just be a caring neighbor. Offer to help where you can.

I wish more people cared as much you do

What and how much are you eating? It could be a vitamin deficiency, a lack of good fats, or a symptom of something else.

The most common causes can be anemia, lack of b-vitamins (especially biotin) or a diet that is too low in fats. Also stress can cause it, as well as dry hands from dishwashing detergents, or really dry weather.  How is your skin and hair? Many things that can affect your nails will also apply to your hair and skin.  Make sure you are getting adequate calories and nutrition, try a good lotion, if you need to wear gloves when working with detergents etc such as dishes, or other cleaning tasks.

If you need to wash your hands alot, also make sure to moisturize well, and try to use a soap that is mild and gentle.

If none of those apply and you are other wise healthy,  I would bring it up next time you go to a doctor.

Hair loss/thinning can have numerous causes, from the benign to the serious.

Keeping your hair pulled back tightly or with the wrong hair ties can cause breakage.

Some people are genetically proned to thinning hair (both men and women)

Vitamin/mineral definiciancies can also cause it, though you will often also have sallow dry or other skin issues.

Too little fat.

Hormones.

Growth cycle issues:  Hair goes thru a growth cycle period where it grows than rests and eventually falls out being replaced by new hairs. This  is normal and usually we only loose a few hairs at a time, but sometimes many hairs get on the same cycle causing a noticable hair loss. This is quite normal. Usually a good conditioner, a sympathetic beautician and time will "cure it".

If it doesnt' go away with time, I would suggest a good physical. Most causes are benign and treatable, but in a few cases it can be a sign of something else, especially if there are other symptoms as well.

Vegetarian Vegans, do you get sick when you eat eggs or dairy? Nov 19 2009
20:38 (UTC)

I haven't eaten meat in at least 2 or 3 years. Now even the smell of meat (esp raw) makes me sick to my stomach.

I'm not a total vegan as I do eat organic free range eggs (from a local farmer), but I don't do any other animal products (save an occassional bit of honey).

I have found that since I stopped eating dairy the black circles under my eyes have all but disappeared and I no longer "machine gun sneeze". But if I do injest any form of dairy my eyes and my sneezing immediately flare up again.

I'm not lactose intolerant and I'm not allergic to milk in the tradional sense. However I do have asthma. I also have a similiar but more severe reaction around cattle. My folks raised cattle when I was younger and I think it may tracce back to that somehow.

Vegetarian I love you, now get that out of my face. Nov 19 2009

I love the phrase "real food" as opposed to say fantasy food. Tongue out

Sometimes a little gentle humor can go a long way.

My ex does the same things to me, though not going as far to so shove it on me, more like picking on me, but so does my 16 year old son/

I had my boss once ask if I was still doing "that vegetarian thing. Good thing she was my boss, so I had to bite my tongue. Had she not been a boss, I would have asked her if she was still doing "that smoking thing", (okay I do have a bad snarky side sometimes)

A registered dietician has a 4 year degree and must pass and exam. They are also required to keep up education hours much like any other professional such as a doctor.

Nutriionist is a meanless term that almost anyone can hang on a shingle.

If you need nutrional advice I suggest you start at the library or your local bookstore, Skip the secions on fad diets du jour and get a good book about nutrition/fitness 10 and educate yourself on the basics.

If you have an underlying medical condition such as diabetes or heart disease seek out a professional who works in that specific area

If you are morbidly obese (ie super heavy) I recommend seeking some one in a bariatric field who is trained specifically to deal with weightloss.

IF you have had eating disorder issues, seek someone who is specific to working with that area.

Most MD's get at most a few hours of nutrional training.

As a 40 yr old woman whose father died of a massive coronary 2 days after his 65th birthday  (13 years ago this Dec), and whose family tree is rich in cardiovascular disease, I can relate.

It took the 10th anniverary of my father death for me to take a good look at myself, 300 lbs, bad skin, bad attitude, bad teeth, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and generally just miserable.

I found making small changes gradually , was much easier than trying to change an entire lifestyle 37 years in the making in one week.

I started out by reducing the amount of soda I drank until I gave it up compleley (eventually I replaced it with coffee but that's another issue).

I started walking more, parking further from the entrance and skipping elevators in favor of stairs (unless we are talking more 6 stories).

I started gradually adding more veggies and less junk food.

I started making more foods myself, using healthier methods but not changign them so radically I didnt' like them

Eventually I became a vegetarian but not overnight.

I took one day at a time and only worried about that day (or mostly tried) not about next year. I didn't forbid any foods, or mark them as good or evil. but rather as everyday foods, sometimes foods and special occassion foods.

I still struggle but I am stronger and believe me I totally understand about life being beyond my control. My ex is an idiot, my 16 year old son thinks he's 25 and I could go on.

Set goals each morning for that day, reward yourself periodically for doing a good job (with somethign non food), and check off your goals at night.

Remember bad habits develop over long periods of time and from what I've read a new habit can take 2 or more weeks to become fully ingrained to where you dont' have to think about it.

I also think about my son, my brother and my family. I want to be there for them. I want to be healthy and enjoy life, not be stuck on the sidelines too sick to particpate.

I also sought professional help as I have a mental illness and found that the correct medication helped immensly.

The healthier I got, the better and more in control I felt and the more I wanted to do and change.

I've since regained a small portion back, but I'm struggling with getting it off again.

I'd be happy to lend my support. There are many of us here who can relate.

What method of Birth Control do you use?

Depo-provera

How long have you reallied on this method?

It must be close to 5 years or more

Has it always been effective?

I haven't been pregnant on it, so I guess I would say yes

Any side effects?

Some women have negative side effects, but I haven't had any. Unless you count the fact that I haven't had a period since I started taking it.  It actually helped with weightloss in my case as I no longer had monthly madness to contend with.

It's only 4 times a year, and there is a 2 week window in which to get the next dose, however if you miss that window you are required to take a pregnancy test first, since it can cause many problems if you are pregnant. I believe they also make you take one before the first one.

I've used the pill, but could never remember to take it at the same time each day. I've also had norplant which was okay.

What do you know about IUD?

Not much

Most, but not all employers provide insurance for full time employees, a few for part time employees.  Smaller companies and the self employed people have to pay for thier own. If you are considered below poverty level you can quailfy for medical assistance. There is also medicaid for people with disabilites that prevent them from being able to work, and workman's comp which employers are required to pay, and will cover anyone with an injury resulting from work (only for the injury related expenses)

Referals may or may not be needed depending what you are seeking and what insurance plan you have (plans range from barebones to cadilac plans that cover almost everything), there is also often a deductible and the plan in some many cases will only pay part of somethings.  For example I have to pay a $25 copay evertime I visit a doctor, $75 if I go to the ER.  My prescription are only partially covered so I still have to  shell out, admitedly a fraction of what I'd pay if I didn't have insurance.  I pay about $70 or so per month, vs over $300 if I didn't have insurance (that's only my plan)

some people can be excluded if they have a pre-existing condition. My last employers insurance company wouldnt' pay for my asthma because I had gone to the ER for it in the previous 12 months before I worked there.

When I wanted to see a dietican a number of years ago I needed a refferal and my insurance company would only cover it, if deemed medically nessecary (ie diabetic, high blood pressure, celiac etc..).

I could go on, and I won't even touch HMOs. Nor will I engage in the Univeral Medical care debate

Foods Stevia? Nov 14 2009
15:35 (UTC)

In reasonable amounts stevia is not harmful, it does have an aftertaste if used in too large of an amount. I don't really recommend it for baking unless you find a specific recipe as like many other non sugar sweeteners it will not add the texture and browning required for a good result.

However I use it in my coffee and tea all the time. I recommend starting with less than you think you will need and increasing from there until you find a level you like.  It is several times sweeter (upwards of 300x) than  sugar so most stevia products are mixed with something else such as inulin or in a liquid form which is usually measured by drops.

I love it in my coffee and tea, and sometimes on oatmeal or cereal.

It is derived from the stevia plant, which is native to South America where it has been used for 1000s of years by the natives. It was orignially banned as a sweetener in the US dues to the Sugar Lobby and could only be sold as a supplement (ironic that it was banned as a sweetener due to potential effects, but safe as a supplement). Until the large sweetener companies found a way to profit from it.

It is considered safe at normal amounts,  most studies with bad effects involve amounts several times what a normal human would ever consume at any given time.

I consider it perfectly safe. I would read labels and look for one with as few additives as possible. Look in health food stores, rather than the sweetener aisle at your local grocery store. It has to be combined with something because the amount of dried needed is so tiny.

when my son (now 16) was little he would refuse to eat PBJ unless I put the PB on one slice and the Jelly on the other. If I put them together he said he didn't like it. (yes he was a unique kid, still is).  Even if he didnt' see me make it, he could tell, because of the way they were squished together.

Personally I'm team PB, otherwise its a mess. The jelly sits nice on the pb and the pb moistens the bread (usually toast for me) a little.

I think its pretty self explanatory.

He was a good looking 20 somethingish guy too

I try my best not to pass judgements, but sometimes it is fun to people watch and play junior behavior analysist. One never knows if a person is buying for themselves or someone else, and there is always way more to the story, but it still says alot about a person.

Or maybe I've just watched too many episodes of Criminal Minds.

North Dakota taxes junk food but not "regular food". its a complicated law.  I'm in ND, where fruit can be expensive during the winter, but I usually buy what is on sale, assuming it is of decent quality. Most of it is trucked in either from FL/CA or South America or Australia.

In the summer its still a little high but not too bad when certain things are season.

Since you are in IL, there may be some cool buys right now at Farmers markets and such, before it gets too cold and they close up.

I do often resort to frozen for really expensive things like berries as they are much more economical.

buy in season! like right now apples are pretty cheap because theyre in season, especially in the US. Plus, when you buy out of season the fruit has to be shipped in from either Europe or South America.

The USA and Europe are  both in the northern hemisphere so the seasons are the same. The USA has apples so Europe has apples. Wink

I think you mean Austrailia or New Zealand where the seasons are opposite of Europe/Americas.

Though in the US much fruit comes from FL/CA which has much longer growing seasons.

I suggest buying in season, watch for sales, and when ever you can go to a local farmers market.

Foods A low sugar diet for a headache sufferer? Nov 06 2009
14:49 (UTC)

I used to have similiar type headaches. I found for me just cutting out processed sugar (and no artificial sweeteners) helped. I stuck to naturally occuring sugars in thier original form, that is fresh fruit, very little fruit juice since that has no fiber.

eventually I did add some treats back in, but never on an empty stomach only after I had eaten some "real food" first.

I believe it may be from a form of hypoglycemia, meaning my headaches were caused in part by wonky blood sugar, as the high sugar low fiber would cause my blood sugar to spiken and then suddenly drop, creating a viscous cycle, of blood sugar ups and downs.

I've slacked off a lately and I've found the old sugar craving returns. In part due to increased caffiene consumption which can cause blood sugar issues in some senstitive people. Certain medications can also interfer (never change or alter meds with out first consulting your heathcare provider).

Google Idiopathic (fancy term meaning we don't know why) reactive hypoglycemia (basically wonky blood sugar issues in someone who is NOT diabetic.

Almost all of symptoms fit me perfectly.

Asparagus has to be one of my favorite all time veggies, especially in the spring when you can get the really thin fresh ones. Though I can get it here year round if I'm will to fork over major dollars in the winter, when its just not as good.

I wont' touch canned veggies, but frozen veggies are great.  I even freeze some of my own in the spring and fall when they are cheap.

I love my asparagus either lightly steamed in the microwave or tossed with a bit of olive oil and a few herbs than roasted in a very hot oven.  I get hungry just thinking about it.

I'm not sure if you can roast frozen asparagus, but it is great in soups and other veggie dishes.

Vegetarian gelatin capsules = ANNOYING Nov 04 2009

there are veggie caps out there, just read the label. It will also usually say vegicaps or somethign similiar on the label.  They are usually pricier since animal gelatin is cheap.

Softgels are harder to find.

I would just empty them out for now. I use either whole flax, or flax oil straight.

DON"T ever cook with flax oil, it'smoke point is too low. Also heat will destroy the benifits. It is great for salad dressing however

I can switch between 2 or 3 simulatanous tasks easily. I do it at work all the time, and at home.

By Mike (my son's father) drives me crazy. Its like he has the attention span of a squirell with one too many expressos.

He'll start one task, than walk buy and see the dishes, so he'll take them out of the sink to fill it, but then realize hey the doors on the buffet need work so he'll remove them to work on, but just leave them there for 3 weeks, until I put them back in, then go to the bed room and start sorting drawers before he goes back to work on something else. some tasks do get finished (key word is eventually), but others just sit..

Absolutely makes me crazy. I am one that believes when ever possible do not start something until you are ready to actually do it. If I am going to sort clothes I don't dump them out today, and get back to them a week later.

Of course I drive him crazy keeping 3 pots stirring at once (methaphorically speaking) and getting them all done.
