Foods Pumello ? Aug 14 2007

The correct spelling is pomelo, and --> here <--, the calorie count is given as 72 cals per cup.

Pamplemousse is grapefruit in french. =)
Foods What happens if you don't refrigerate better 'n peanut butter like it says to on the package? Aug 14 2007

To posters #2 and #3, Better 'n' Peanut Butter isn't actually peanut butter.  It's peanut 'product', for lack of a better word.  Half the cals, way less fat, and more carbs.  It tastes different than PB, but still very good in its own right.

To clementine6... I don't know.  Sorry.  I think I've always refrigerated mine, just because I wasn't sure.  Since there are preservatives in it, and it does say to refrigerate it, I'd do it unless you have a good reason not to.

Two fun recipes I've tried lately, and loved!:

My favourite: Bake it and take it out of the skin.  Mash it up with a few tsp of natural almond butter (adds healthy fats and protein!), 1 tbsp of orange juice (less than 10 cals, but lots of taste), cinnamon, and a pinch of nutmeg and a dash of salt.  Put the mixture back into the skin, serve, and eat!  Great with a few raisins on top, if you can afford those few extra cals.

A sweeter dish: Bake it and take it out of the skin.  Mash it up with 2 tbsp of light coconut milk (only 17 cals), 1/4 cup of crushed pineapple (about 30 cals), and a dash of curry powder.  Put it back in the skin and serve it with a few pieces of pineapple on top, and a few walnuts (but only if you have the cals.. don't sweat it if you don't use the garnish).

In a local health food store (not a chain), I found a bar called "Elev8Me!" (<-- click for the link).

The cocoa coffee flavour had, for ingredients: whey protein isolate, dates, organic raisins, apples, cranberries, apple juice, sunflower oil, almonds, organic fair trade cocoa, organic fair coffee beans.

No added sugar or unhealthy fats, gluten-free, wheat-free, soy-free, and all natural ingredients.  Nothing artifical.  I recognize everything on that list! It was 200 cal, and 18 g protein.  That's the best I've ever found, and it tasted good too.

For healthiness, I'd say this tops the list.

Of course, you could make something like this on your own, I'd think.  It's just fruit for the body, nut/sunflower oil to bind it, cocoa and coffee beans for flavour, and whey protein for the protein.  Experiment!

I, personally, am not gluten-intolerant.  However, this website seems to do a great job of addressing eating under these restrictions: Gluten Free Goddess.

She has tips and tricks for eating without gluten, as well as some fabulous-looking recipes, many of which are vegan.  Hopefully it can help you out.

Yep.  I choose a recipe, then put it into the recipe analyzer in CC to calculate nutrition and calories.  This works really well, especially if you want to modify some ingredients.

(Also, I'm a complete calorie-counting-nerd, and I know the estimates of most of my regular foods offhand.  I can glance at a recipe and estimate the cals per serving to see if it's worth even plugging into the analyzer.)

This page is brilliant: The Cottage Cheese Page.

It has desserts, breakfasts, lunches, main meals, and snacks.  Almost all of them are super easy, with little or no preparation, and few ingredients.  They range from quiches and pancakes down to simply chopping an apple into 1/2 cup of cottage cheese.

I can't vouch for all of them, but the few I've tried have been great (the 'cottage cheese and spinach pie' is great - I made it last weekend!), and pretty darn low cal.

Enjoy!

Try it with hummus (I like chipotle or something with a bit of spice) mixed in, and diced red peppers.  Then eat it plain, or on bread, or with a salad.  I've made an easy salad with this tuna mixture and some mixed beans!  You can also add diced apple for some unexpected sweetness.
Foods Is this right?? Aug 07 2007
17:13 (UTC)
Well, here's the recipe.  Here are my rough calorie estimates for each ingredient:
1 cup all-purpose flour = 500 cals
1 tablespoon baking powder = 15 cals
1/2 teaspoon baking soda = negligible
1/8 teaspoon kosher salt = negligible
1 cup bananas, mashed = 200 cals
1/4 cup sugar = 200 cals
1/4 cup applesauce = 25 cals (assuming unsweetened)
1 egg = 75 cals
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract = 5 cals

Total: 1020 cals for the whole recipe, and about 85 cals each if there are 12 muffins.

Pretty low cal, but yes, it's right.  This doesn't look like it would make that much batter (there's only 1 cup of flour).  The estimate is probably right, but the muffins may be smaller than you think, that's all.  They probably don't fill the muffin papers.

Recipes Cake mix substitutions question Aug 03 2007

Eggs: You need more egg whites than one per whole egg.  For three eggs, try substituting 5 egg whites.

Applesauce: If the recipe calls for 1/3 cup oil, try anywhere from 1/3 to 2/3 cup applesauce.  Sometimes double is too moist, but the same ratio can be too dry.  It depends on the recipe. I'd probably try 1/2 cup (unsweetened) applesauce for this cake.

Cooking time: Shouldn't change drastically.  With any recipe, you have to keep an eye on it as the distribution of heat is different in every oven.  Just make sure to check it frequently and take it out when you think you should! (Test it with a toothpick).

I get my parents to pick up:

  • whey protein powder (waaay cheaper than health stores)
  • babybel cheeses (they're wrapped in wax, so don't go bad)
  • kashi bars
  • salmon!  It's great there, and cheap!
  • cereal: if there's one you want, get a big box that's cheaper.
  • edamame
And, if you're feeling naughty, they make a great trail mix that has M&Ms in it. ;)
Recipes Wild Game Meals Aug 02 2007

I don't have exact recipes as everything made with wild game at my house was pretty much a staple -  we ate it all the time, no recipes needed.  I learned by watching.  Here are my favourites for deer or elk:

Try using it in stews instead of beef; venison or elk stew is a favourite at my house (or moose, if you have it, is even better).  Throw in carrots, parsnips, potatoes, or whatever else you want.

Venison cutlets: flatten with a meat mallet, bread it (egg and breadcrumbs), and fry it. =)  Okay, not healthy, but very delicious.  This is the only type of fried food that I enjoy.  Maybe just use less oil?  Or bread and then bake instead of fry?

My dad makes a great venison mock stew.  Just small pieces of venison in an oven-safe dish with a package of instant onion soup mix for flavouring, and some water.  Bake it until it's done.

You can also make burgers, or smoke it, depending on where you're getting it butchered (if you just have a freezer full of meat, though, it's kinda too late for this option).
Foods Questions about what actually leads to weight gain... Aug 02 2007
20:24 (UTC)

besides the effect of increasing appetite and causing one to eat more, do diet soda and eating quickly cause weight gain?

I would say no, just because it does indeed all boil down to math.  If you can resist the increased appetite and not eat more, I don't think either of those would (logically) contribute to weight gain.

However, our bodies are not always logical. =P

I think everyone's body reacts differently to different stimuli.  For example, I know some people swear that if they eat dairy, they have a harder time losing weight EVEN if their total calorie count doesn't change.  For some, dairy may actually seem to increase their weight loss.  Listen to your own body.  Maybe, in some people, diet soda slows down their metabolism, so they gain weight easier.  Anything's possible, really.

Weight Loss A technical question Aug 02 2007

The eat meter doesn't take any added activity into account.  You have two options:

1. Set your activity level to light and don't log your workout.  It won't be exactly the same as what you're burning, just approximate.  But your eat meter will adjust to reflect the light activity level.

2. Set your activity level to sedentary, and log your workout in the activity log.  Your total calories burned will be more accurate than in option #1, but since your eat meter is based only on your activity level, not your added activity, it won't change.  You'll have to live with a red eat meter.

If the eat meter REALLY bothers you, do #1.  If you can live in the red zone and it doesn't freak you out, then do #2 and be more accurate.  Or, suggest in the C-C forum that Erik and Igor adjust the eat-meter so that it reflects the extra amount you should be eating to compensate for added activity. =)

If you're doing 2 hours of exercise, and you're a teenager, you definitely need to eat more than 1650 calories a day.  That's why you're hungry and want to eat.  You should be eating more like 2000 calories, hon! Use a teen calculator, not the one on this site, and make sure to factor in your exercise and eat more on the days you have field hockey - your body needs it!

Two pounds in 12 days is nothing to turn your nose up at!  That's a little more than a pound a week, which is perfectly reasonable.

Plus, if you weighed with your clothes on during that time of the month, I highly doubt your weigh-in was even accurate - you've probably lost more than just 2 lbs.  And if you weighed in the middle of the day (ie, after eating anything), your weight also reflects whatever food and water is still in your body.

Weigh in the mornings, without clothes, before eating.  And don't weigh during that time of the month!  As a general rule, women often gain weight (bloat) during that time (I've seen posts of women who gain 8 lbs, and then drop it right after the week finishes and they go back to 'normal').

Bottom line: you're doing just fine.  Don't worry.

As long as your muffins are still the same size as the originals, even if there are less of them, bake them for the same amount of time that the original recipe calls for.  Don't feel bad, it's a perfectly reasonable question. =)

Haha.  This was my food challenge from my journal last week. =)  I also eat veggies, and quite a variety, so it was harder than I thought.  Thanks to some suggestions of friends, I had tomatillos and kale for 2 new veggies.  (I think I may have had kale before, but the tomatillos were definitely new for me).  I can post a recipe using tomatillos, if you're interested!
Foods Just add water?? Jul 31 2007

I also have a kettle and I use it for tea, coffee, and oatmeal, like you do.  The Thai bowls are a great idea.

I've also found a great instant black bean soup that comes in a paper cup and only requires hot water; check your grocery store to see what they carry in the way of healthy, high protein/fibre soups.

It's not really "healthy", persay, but I keep some light hot chocolate powder at work.  Even though it's not healthy, it keeps me away from desserts and snack machines if I know I can have a cup of hot chocolate.

Fitness Elliptical vs Treadmill - confusing Jul 27 2007
00:50 (UTC)
16
I have read that ellipticals often grossly overestimate your calorie burn (up to 20%), and that treadmills are the most accurate of all the stationary equipment.  I'm sorry I don't have a source for you; I've searched for it and can't find it right now.  I do know that I read it in an article based on a scientific study, not just on a fitness forum or something.  If I do find it, I'll edit this post and link to it.

Also, if you did not put in your stats, don't trust the machines at all.  They're based on a standard formula for a 'standard' person, and each person is so drastically different that this is often pretty useless.

Personally, I trust how I feel.  Even though an elliptical may say I'm burning more (and they do for me, too), I *know* that I work harder when I run on a treadmill.  I sweat more, breathe heavier, have a higher HR, and I hurt way more afterward.  Trust your body, not a machine based on a standard formula.
That being said, I do whichever I feel like.  I like the elliptical because it's easier and I can read a magazine while I'm on it =), but I know running makes me work harder, so it depends on whether I'm feeling lazy or ambitious. =)
