| Pregnancy & Parenting | Making Baby Food | Mar 29 2009 04:07 (UTC) |

I think I waited on making my own meat baby food until she was old enough for finger foods. It's really hard to grind up the meat smooth enough for little ones. I know the packaged ones smell/taste bad to us, but babies aren't used to all the salt and seasonings we are, and my kid actually liked them. |

| Weight Loss | Cookie Diet. | Mar 27 2009 02:40 (UTC) |

I know that a lot of people on this website are anti diet programs of any kind. You're not going to get a lot of support on this website for that kind of diet. I happen to like slimfast myself... but anyway. I think that diet programs (nutrisystem, slimfast, cookie diet, etc.) can be a good starting point, provided that these cookies have the vitamins and nutrients that you need, which I'm assuming they do since they're made as meal replacement cookies. Once you lose a few pounds on the diet, it might inspire you to start making healthier overall food choices. If you can slowly wean yourself off of the cookies eventually, and then replace them with healthy foods, then you'll have a sustainable weight loss plan. For me, it was easiest to make a radical diet change to slimfast, which was pre-packaged and easy, and then after losing some weight I slowly incorporated healthier food choices. Good luck. |

| Weight Loss | isn't fiber supposed to HELP you poo? (sorry for the excess of info) | Mar 27 2009 02:32 (UTC) |

It only helps if you also drink a lot of water with it. Think about fiber- it's undigestible material, and a lot of the time it's dry, so it can clog you up unless you drink enough water with it to let the fiber soak up some water. |

| Weight Loss | How do you lose belly fat? | Mar 27 2009 00:34 (UTC) |
|
Unfortunately I've heard that fat comes off from all over the body pretty evenly, and there's no good way to target belly fat alone. Usually fat loss follows the last on first off rule, so the part of you that has had fat the longest is the hardest place to lose it. Congrats on the 30 pounds lost! That's a great accomplishment. |

Take a look at this webpage regarding domestic abuse: http://www.helpguide.org/mental/domestic_viol ence_abuse_types_signs_causes_effects.htm It is not ok for him to call you names and make decisions for you without even listening to your point of view. These are abusive behaviors. Even if he doesn't hit you, the things you mentioned are not part of a healthy relationship. You deserve someone who does not call you names and tell you what to do with no discussion. The part where you said that "i try to tell him how i feel he tells me i am wrong and deserve it b/c i don't listen to him" really worries me. Is he telling you that you deserve to feel bad because you didn't do what he said? That's definately him trying to belittle and control you. Another common abusive behavior is a partner that tries to isolate you- like keeping you from socializing at the park. The webpage says "In order to increase your dependence on him, an abusive partner will cut you off from the outside world. He may keep you from seeing family or friends, or even prevent you from going to work or school. You may have to ask permission to do anything, go anywhere, or see anyone." Seek some counseling- for you and him. Your kid should not have to grow up in a house where his daddy swears and calls his mommy names in anger. It's not right and you don't deserve it, no matter what! Also, if he ever hits you, or any other physical violence and you need to get out, call the national domestic violence hotline and they can help: 1800-799-SAFE (3224). |

Doesn't anyone remember what they learned in high school health class? You can get pregnant the first time you have sex. You can get pregnant if you have sex during your period! It has happened to people before. It's not very likely, but sometimes people ovulate at irregular times. Just because you have your period doesn't mean you're not going to ovulate and there's zero chance of getting pregnant. Telling people they can't get pregnant during their period is irresponsible and inaccurate. And yes I have charted my temperature before since we have fertility problems. Sperm can live 7 days. |

| Pregnancy & Parenting | How much does a pregnancy cost? | Mar 09 2009 14:51 (UTC) |

It depends on your insurance and if you have short-term disability at your job. If you have disability, they usually pay a percentage of your income for 6 weeks after the baby is born. For me that was 60% income. For my health insurance (which I paid 20% after deductible of 500) and with an induced labor and then a c-section I spent around 3000 dollars for the doctor visits and hospital bills in the end. If your job has a flex spend plan or "cafeteria plan" it is really helpful to put some money in there in the beginning of the year you plan to have a baby so it's not all one giant bill when the baby's born. I have read that the average uninsured and uncomplicaed normal labor costs 7000 dollars without insurance for just the hospital bills. |

If you think you are pregnant, you should have your IUD removed. A pregnancy that results while a woman is wearing an IUD increases her risk of an ectopic pregnancy, serious pelvic infection, preterm labor and miscarriage. During the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, a woman who has an IUD in place has a 15 to 50% chance of miscarrying. After this time, the risk goes up to 50%. http://www.epigee.org/guide/iud.html It's not safe to accidentally get pregnant with an IUD, so if you're thinking about trying, have it removed and use another birth control until you're ready. Also, start taking a prenatal vitamin or at least a folic acid pill now if you're going to try soon. |

Call the doctor! They will give you instructions on exactly how to do it. I did it for my wedding, and the doctor explained exactly what to do. It's not bad or anything. |

When I took a test, I had to pee in a cup and then dip the stick in for the recommended time to make sure it worked right. I thought it was kind of hard to pee right on the stick for long enough. That was easier for me. Good luck! |

| Pregnancy & Parenting | Birth Control + Ovulation Symptoms = Ovulation? | Feb 25 2009 23:53 (UTC) |

Sounds like you're probably ok then. Unless you happen to be in that .01 percent where the pill doesn't work, you probably didn't ovulate. The pill also makes cervical mucus thicker to help prevent the sperm from getting up to an egg, so even if you did ovulate, the odds are good you wouldn't get pregnant. One of my friends got pregnant while on the pill because she got the stomach flu. Because of her digestive problems from being sick, the pill wasn't getting absorbed properly and she didn't know- so they didn't work. That's the only person I know that has happened to. |

Read the package insert that comes with the pills to see how long you have to take the pills before they become effective. I think it's 2 weeks if i remember correctly. Anyone else know? When I was on that kind of pill I felt really strange for about 3 months and had all kinds of weird side effects like hot flashes and heartburn- so it could just be you getting used to the pill. |

| Pregnancy & Parenting | Here we go...Vaccines! | Feb 17 2009 21:54 (UTC) |
|
I first want to say I know it is a very personal decision and you should be praised for doing extra research and making informed choices. That being said, there was a Measles outbreak in my city of Milwaukee last year. Many people don't realize that Measels is what made Helen Keller deaf and blind- it is a very serious disease and it is very contagious. If you (or anyone else) choose not to vaccinate your child- make sure you're aware of the risks. Diseases like Measles are STILL AROUND and your child can catch them. I have discussed this with my doctor at length- and I know many people disagree, but there is NO correlation between autism and vaccination schedules, and it has been studied a lot. My doctor seems to think we should look into a link between plastics and autism. I am leaning more toward researching pesticide use. Good for you though for even looking into it- and stick to your own informed reasoning. They're YOUR kids! :) |

| Pregnancy & Parenting | My cervix is closed up like Fort Knox!!!! | Feb 17 2009 21:19 (UTC) |

I totally understand that. I wasn't dialated AT ALL until a week after my due date. I was induced after that and it turned out that her head was exceptionally large and that was preventing her from pushing on the cervix and helping it to open up. C-section.. hooray... Anyway, I've read that it doesn't matter how dilated you are- it doesn't affect when you will go into labor (early or late) if you're a 0 or a 3 or 5 by your due date. |

| Pregnancy & Parenting | baby wakes up sooooo early ... any advice?? | Feb 17 2009 21:13 (UTC) |
|
Yes you can reprogram their sleep! Usually kids around this age will sleep around 12 hours at night- so going to bed so early contributes to the early wake-up. Expecting them to sleep 14 hours at night is the problem. Put them to bed later and just let them cry it out in the morning until a reasonable time (like 8pm to 7:30am). After a few mornings they'll get the hang of it and sleep in more. Try the book Solve your Child's Sleep Problems by Ferber. It worked wonders for me and my kid, who has slept through the night since 6 months old. |

| Pregnancy & Parenting | Could I be PREGNANT? | Feb 17 2009 21:09 (UTC) |

Dollar stores have pregnancy tests over by the pads and stuff. Buy one of those to help set your mind at ease. They are just as accurate as the 10 dollar ones. Then when you go to the doctor perhaps you could get a different kind of birth control as a back up- like the pill or spermicide foam (non-prescription) in addition to the condom so this won't happen again. Maybe you're just late because of the stress you're under about this whole thing. If you're pregnant- carefully consider your options and discuss them with your doctor. Just so you know, I'm about as pregnant as you would be right now, and the baby already has a heart beat and eyes and nose developing... just think about all of your options first and do what you need to do. Good luck! |

| Pregnancy & Parenting | PCOS and pregnancy | Feb 17 2009 14:52 (UTC) |

I have PCOS and I conceived my first baby by taking 500 of Metformin once a day. I resumed normal cycles after about 5 months on the medication. I weighed 190. For my second baby I ovulated on my own at a weight of about 177. Losing weight definately helped for me. Talk to your doctor about other options besides in vitro. Have you tried Metformin? It was really effective for me and there is no increased risk of multiple babies. Good luck with losing weight! There's also a really helpful site www.soulcysters.com that helped me a lot. |

| Weight Loss | Hollywood it's so wrong | Feb 05 2009 22:32 (UTC) |

You probably could be a size 4 if you worked out all the time and ate very healthy like some tv stars do. I used to use big boned as an excuse all the time, but once I stopped doing that I lost more weight. It is good to be happy with the size you are, but it's not good to use excuses like big-boned to be overweight (which I'm not saying you are...I don't know you). What bothers me is that it is so gender-biased in hollywood. The men seem to be any size and age and still get roles. It's the women that are always so tiny. |

Anything cheap will not work obviously. I think you'd be surprised. I worked for a company that made various lotions, and they sold one that was the exact same product in two different bottles- one was about 20 dollars and one was 60 dollars a bottle- for the very same formula. Sometimes they would even make a batch and split it into 1/2 the batch going to the "cheap" one and the other 1/2 of the exact same batch going to the "expensive" one. I've also heard that no creams work for cellulite, but good luck on that. |

| Weight Loss | Acai Berry & Colon cleansing >> has anyone any info positive or negative? | Jan 28 2009 22:23 (UTC) |

No reputable health care provider would tell you to take a "colon cleanse" product. It's just a laxative in herbal form. Laxatives are an unsafe way to lose weight, and with many of the herbals, your body can become dependent on them if you keep using them. It's clever marketing- you'll obviously lose weight from the laxative effect. I don't know much about acai berry. I bet it's also a laxative effect, the same as if you ate a lot of any berry. |

Original Post by trhawley: You're right. Science tells us different things all the time about diet. I was just going with what my nutritionist told me... That being said, I'm not sure Men's Health magazine is the most authoratative source for scientific knowlege. They probably sold a lot of magazines telling people they can eat as much saturated fats as they want. All things in moderation, right? |
