Weight Loss What's the recommended daily intake for sodium? Aug 10 2006
17:16 (UTC)
1
recommended intake is 1500 mg per day.

most americans consume 2000 - 7000 mg per day.

the tolerable upper level is about 2300 mg per day (above this level is when you start to see undesirable effects such as increased risk for hypertension).
Weight Loss Can anyone analyze this? Aug 08 2006

Here's the breakdown from my nutrition class:

calculations are for a 1200 cal/day diet:
energy: 4g/cal carbs, 9g/cal fat

carbs: 45-65% of total cals --> 135-195 grams
fat: 20-35% of total cals --> 27-47 grams
protein: (your desired weight in kg) x 0.8g/kg protein = #grams protein... so if you want to be 143:

143/2.2 = 65kg
65 x 0.8 = 52 g protein

Weight Loss College Students Aug 08 2006

I'm a college student... again - I graduated 2 years ago and now I'm back.

height: 5'11''
small/athletic build
current weight: 149
goal weight: 135

I gained so much weight my first time in college, with a high of 193 about 3-3.5 years ago. It's coming off slowly, and I do have setbacks (especially lately - I've put on 4 lbs since starting school again), but I try not to get discouraged.

I've done the pantyliner thing before, but it gets really uncomfortable.

Here's what I do:

Try to avoid "hanging out" in sweaty clothes. As soon as you're done running, take your underwear off. If you have to drive back home or something, just take them off and put your shorts back on, or bring a change of clothes. I also carry a baggie of baby wipes to give myself a quick cleaning (they work all over - armpits, face, "down there" etc).

Weight Loss What do you see in the mirror? Jun 26 2006

Distorted. Body. Image.

I'm plagued by it as well. And from the previous posts, it seems like a lot of us are too!

Something that works for me - first thing in the morning (before you look in the mirror), get up and think of something positive but NONPHYSICAL about yourself, something that other people admire. Then look in the mirror and try to see that.

I'm a peanut butter addict. I've recently started using natural/organic peanut butter. I prefer crunchy.

The Whole Foods brand - 365 - makes an AWESOME peanut butter with only peanuts and salt. And it's pretty low in calories (compared to "regular" peanut butter).

NEWLY VEGAN!! :)

I recently decided to make the switch from psuedo-vegetarian (seafood - especially sushi - was my weakness) to vegan. I'm in the process of eliminating all the dairy/animal products from my house. I decided to make the switch for 2 main reasons:

-I'm lactose-intolerant and shouldn't be eating dairy anyway
-I'm a big advocate of animal rights, sustainable farming, healthy/peaceful living, etc.

Any tips? Suggestions? Recipes? I'm really excited about this lifestyle change and I want to get involved.

One question - do you go as far as not wearing leather?

P.S. I added you all as friends!

I am obsessed with this place! Especially the hot/salad bars. There are TWO within ~15 minutes of my house! There's also a smilar store, I think it's called "Earth" that's about 25 minutes away, but I haven't tried it. Anyone ever heard of it?

These are my favorite breakfasts:

cereal (i.e. optimum slim, fiber one, or kashi) and fresh fruit (i.e. strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries) mixed in with fage 0% greek yogurt (this stuff is the BEST yogurt EVER - high protein, low sugar, low fat)

cereal medley (i.e. optimum slim, fiber one, kashi) and light vanilla soy juice with fresh fruit

smoothie with fresh fruit (I usually take a can of slimfast high protein and ice and blend with fruit)

oatmeal with rasins

I mix in a high fiber cereal (Fiber One is my favorite) with my normal cereal for breakfast. Or I'll combine yogurt, fruit, and Fiber One and have that.

I love fruit (especially prunes!) so fiber isn't usually a problem for me. But when I feel...uhm "backed-up" - I'll take a fiber suppliment like metamucil. I don't suggest you do that daily though, unless recommended by a doctor.
Foods Slimfast? Jun 24 2006
21:48 (UTC)
I did SlimFast Optima for a couple months and lost a good amount of weight. This was a typical day on my plan:

breakfast: shake + fruit
snack: slimfast bar
lunch: shake + veggie
snack: slimfast bar
exercise: 3 mile run OR weight circuit
dinner: anything reasonable

But when I stopped, I just went right back to eating regularly (instead of gradually, like only replacing one meal with a shake instead of two) and gained all the weight back. Then I was depressed that I had gained it back, and ended up gaining more.

Overall, it does work. But you need to watch out for nasty preservatives and other yucky ingredients in some of the bars. And when you're done with weight loss, gradually ease yourself back in to "normal" eating.

I heart hummus/hummous!

I've never liked ranch, mayo, ketchup, mustard, etc., so I use hummus on sandwiches instead. I had some for lunch today on a pita along with baba ghanouj, tabouli and stuffed grape leaves. I love mediterranean/lebanese cuisine!

That's AWESOME and I really admire that. I try to have the same mentality as well, but it's so hard sometimes - food is just so tempting!
Weight Loss the freshman..50 or 15? Jun 21 2006

I graduated 2 years ago with some extra poundage. Hopefully you can learn from my mistakes:

Think of it this way - you're paying for the gym in your tuition/fees, USE IT! Play intramural sports or join club teams if you're really good. If you have time in your schedule, take a physical education course every term.

Remember: WALKING TO CLASS DOES NOT EQUAL EXERCISE! You need to do more than that! Find a partner (roommate, high school friend, random person) and hold each other accountable. It's easier to stay motivated when you have a buddy.

Pre-packaged/instant foods are quick and taste good, but beware of calories, fat (hydrogenated oils), preservatives, and sodium. Fresh fruits and vegetables are cheap and ready-to-eat. You can find healthy alternatives at the dining hall (i.e. salad bar). Limit your pizza intake! I was ordering pizza/wings/chinese 4 out of 7 days a week and didn't really notice!

But hey, as long as you're staying active, everything in moderation (alcochol, sugar, fatty foods).

Allow yourself to have fun and be open-minded. You do a lot of growing in college, just try not grow horizontally (in weight).

^^I've done that too! I opened the fridge one morning and was like "oh no I don't have milk!" so I just put yogurt on my cereal. My friends thought I was crazy, but they're missing out!

It's crazy what you can come up with in a dorm setting. I've made s'mores in the microwave, "baked" cookies on a George Foreman, and learned to like a lot of things "cold" that normally shouldn't be. It *almost* makes me miss dorm life.

I WISH I had your problem!

I think about food ALL THE TIME. I feel like a junkie, always thinking about my next fix. I can't even explain the restraint it takes not to eat all the time.

And maybe you could eat small but efficient meals - something where you're not eating a lot as far as ounces/grams/etc, but you're getting the nutrients you need. Maybe protein or energy bars? Good luck!

I never actually hit the 200 mark, but I came close!

At my heaviest I was 193, about 3.5 years ago. I've been trying to get rid of it ever since and now I'm down to 155. My ultimate goal is 130, but I've hit a plateau. That's why I decided to join this site, specifically because I was having a really hard time keeping a food journal on my own. And also because I need some encouragement to avoid those late-nite binges that get the best of me.

Good luck everyone!

That's awesome! I love mixing stuff in with my yogurt because I don't like the texture of plain ol' yogurt. And I'm a really big fan of FAGE 0% greek yogurt, which is thicker than regular yogurt.

And I think I'm the only person who ENJOYS the taste of fiber cereals (Fiber One is my favorite!), prunes, and all those other "fibery" foods. haha!

UGH! I know your pain!

During the day I eat very well - lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lowfat dairy, etc. But at night I CRAVE sweets, candy, ice cream, etc. And if I give in and have one piece of candy, it triggers some monster within and I can't stop. It's like alcoholism - one piece of candy is too much, and 500 pieces isn't enough.

Last night was the first night in WEEKS that I haven't had one of those crazy binges... but I also went to bed at 9pm. Ha! Too bad I can't go to bed that early every night!
