Foods Healthy lunches that dont cost to much Jul 23 2009
13:35 (UTC)

On the weekend I make a big pot of a vegetable-bean soup and then take a bowl of it to work each weekday.  It's cheap, healthy, and quick.  You can toss in carrots, celery, onions, garlic, lentils/beans into a pot with some seasonings/bouillon/salt and you're good to go.  I just use whatever I have on hand; it's hard to mess it up.  For a heartier soup, add more beans, barley, or maybe a can of cream of mushroom soup.

I also bring fresh vegetables and fruit in my lunches, although they can be expensive.  Hard boiled eggs are a good snack, also.

Weight Loss Sugar? Jan 29 2009
18:52 (UTC)

I think the analysis tool should count the sugar from fruit less than refined sugar.

I also have a high sugar percentage from fruit, but I eat fewer calories overall when I eat more fruit so I'm not worried about it.  However, there are "better" fruits that are lower in calories and sugar (e.g. strawberries are "better" than pineapple in that regard).

I'm 27 and my acne has been worse than when I was a teen.  I tried all sorts of over-the-counter things over the span of a couple years that only sort of helped.

Once I got health insurance, I finally went to the doctor and he put me on oral antibiotics--that really helped.

It's funny how my inability to eat just 1200 calories may have actually helped me lose weight! I'm 5'7" so I assume my BMR is higher than that. This is quite interesting...

Short term only, I assure you. What you're saying is that you can't even eat the minimum the Mayo Clinic suggests to keep your body running smoothly. Oh, I believe you you're losing weight. For now. But eventually your metabolism, which is no doubt slowing doubt as we speak, will catch up to what you're eating. That is the essence of Starvation Mode, that your body eventually finds an equilibrium with your daily intake and that you will cease losing weight that way.

I highly suggest that you work towards eating more. It really is worth it. It works, long term, and you don't have to fear the effects of malnutrition that typically comes with eating too little.

the way this was phrased, it's unclear whether the member is stating that she was unable to eat as much as 1200 calories per day or was unable to eat that little per day

I thought she meant she was unable to eat that little and that eating more had helped her.

Smile

I didn't realize what I said could be viewed that way. :) No, I eat like 1400-2300 calories.  1200 is so low, I don't know how anyone can eat so little.

Health & Support Packing on the pounds with Paxil? Mar 20 2008

I don't know why, but yes, paxil does often lead to weight gain.  Welbutrin is good because it has few side effects and generally does not cause weight gain; some people even lose weight on it.  But none of the anti-depressants I tried really helped me.  Having my life circumstances improve is what worked for me.

When I went off of such medications (while still being clinically severely depressed), I lost 30 pounds in 6 weeks without dieting.  So I think it's about the drugs, not so much what you eat.  But I'm just one case.

I would talk to your doctor about your concerns, especially because how you feel about your body affects a lot in your life.

Good luck to you!

Are there any lean/muscular 5'7" women out there who've had their BMR's measured professionally?  The posted link says mine is 1400 cals, but I have a bit a muscle on me so I'm wondering how accurate it is.  I'm 127 lbs.

Foods Is Splenda Bad for You? Feb 14 2008

This is why I largely stopped eating artificial sweeteners.  They may not be bad for you, but if they affect your body's fullness signals that would be a bad thing.  Of course this study is not completely conclusive regarding what happens with humans, but I figured I was better off just eating the real thing but decreasing my sugar intake.  For example, I drink my coffee black and switched to honey in my oatmeal, and then decrease the amount of it I used over time.  You can train your body to lower its sugar expectations.

You'll have to weigh the data and decide what's best/easiest for you. Good luck! :)

Weight Loss Those who eat 6x/day what do you eat???? Feb 01 2008

Mini meals that include fat, fiber and protein:

1 or 2 T almonds + an apple

1/2 c cottage cheese + raw vegetables

hardboiled egg whites (with a little bit of a yolk) + clementine

fiber one cereal

wheat toast + 1/3 T peanut butter

salad with small amounts of nuts and cheese; I use pineapple as my dressing

I pack my lunch everyday with many small containers of food and then eat little meals throughout the day. I make sure I have enough fat and protein so I feel satisfied.

I hope this helps/gives you some ideas.

Weight Loss Disenchantment? Jan 09 2008
13:01 (UTC)

What has worked for me is to make sure I eat a some fat, protein, and fiber in every one of my snacks/meals. Carrots alone are boring, but pair them with a little peanut butter or cheese and they're great.

Also, here is a salad idea that is healthy, filling, and (to me) delicious:

1 1/2 c greens

1/4 c cherry tomatoes

2 T cucumber

2 t green onions

5 baby carrots

1 small orange

2 T pineapple

1 T feta

1 T walnuts

calories: 180

good luck!

Not to hijack the thread but, what about the measurements for a male? And also what do pant sizes go by, when it is A x B. I know the B is length but...

My question's similar and I didn't want to start almost an identical thread.

devbanana, A in AxB sizes is the waist measurement.

Generally a 'T' shape is considered ideal in men meaning that the shoulders are relatively broad compared to the waist. But I don't know what measurements correspond to this shape in men.

I've heard that .67 is supposed to be preferred ratio across many cultures. That is, waist/hips = .67. But we all vary so much in body type and can do little to control this. Alls we can do is aim to be healthy. :)

I don't know why you've stopped losing; that's strange.

I'm 5'6.5" and I got down to 124 pounds last fall by eating 1200-1500 calories a day and exercising now and then.  I usually ate more (maybe 1800 to 2500 calories) on the weekend.  Maybe the up in calories keeps your metabolic rate from slowing down?  I'm not sure.

Maybe you should try eating 1300 or 1400 calories for a few days?  I know this sounds weird, but perhaps your body is in 'starvation' mode?  1300-1400 should still be less than what you're burning, so you should not gain any weight.

Oh, and I'm 26 years old.

Good luck!  Let us know what works for you.  :)
Weight Loss Emotional Eating/ bored eating???? Oct 04 2007
13:50 (UTC)

Here is something that has helped me: I'll wash and pre-cut raw vegetables, and hard boil eggs. Then when I want a snack (like cookies) I'll first eat some of the vegetables and an egg white, and then I'll have a cookie. This way, I feel fuller and don't eat as many cookies. It also helps to wait like 15 minutes after you eat the healthier stuff before you eat the sugar. I personally don't believe in banning foods; I just try to eat less of the calorie rich stuff.

I sympathize with you as I too struggle with this. Hang in there and keep trying.

:)

Weight Loss can body shape change? Feb 08 2007

I still have the same plastic measuring tape, I measure at the smallest part of my waist, and I measure 2-3 times at a given time to make sure it's accurate.  But I agree that inconsistant measuring would make more sense.

Maybe you're right, maybe maturation could play a role?  I would be surprised if this is the case though because I devoped early and stayed the same height for 10 years until now.  Perhaps bodies change during the mid-20s?

Thank you for the suggestions!

I recommend north Indian style dahl.  I make it with tiny red lentils, onions and spices.  It's quick/simple to make and the lentils are a nice source of protein.
