and..cooking from scratch means you can not only control the amount of salt, but use good, unrefined sea salt. It also means you can control the quality of all the ingredients. low fat foods are quite bad for one, really. Fat supplies much of the flavour and texture of food, so when it's removed, companies resort to all kinds of unhealthy chemicals and additives to artificially create the flavour and texture they removed. |

I weigh myself randomly I don't keep track of my food or water I don't 'exercise' but do activities I enjoy I eat when I am hungry and have just what I want at the time (this means I never have cravings). I use lots of salt, but unrefined - it contains numerous minerals and does not contribute to water retention or health problems - and for certain people, it is very beneficial. I sleep 8-9 hours a night As close as I can, I eat a traditional, whole foods, diet: http://www.westonaprice.org/basicnutrition/di etguidelines.html |

| Foods | Today I got another F? | Mar 08 2007 19:48 (UTC) |

I don't even bother logging my meals, because I would end up the same as you. I don't think I'd get beyond breakfast before I had my first 'F'. I usually have either steel cut oats with cream, real maple syrup and cultured butter, scambled eggs with cream, bacon and toast with lots of butter. If I'm not hungry, hot chocolate (homemade using equal parts cocoa powder and unrefined sugar, and whole milk) or if I have a lot of time, homemade waffles with butter and real maple syrup and bacon. :) For us healthy is natural, unprocessed 'real' food like our grandparents and great-grandparents ate - whole milk, eggs, cream, butter, grass-fed meat, local organically grown vegetables, homemade bread and baked goods. Unhealthy is margarine, vegetable oil, soy, artificial colours, flavours and sweetners and other created 'foods'. |

| Yep, they are all bad. Sweetners are notorious for being released with very little testing or with the majority of the tests funded by the sweetner companies themselves. Aspertame is a neurotoxin. Splenda is no better, and perhaps worse. We use raw honey, pure maple syrup or unrefined sugar. People who prefer not to use even these usually use stevia. http://www.mercola.com/article/aspartame/hidd en_dangers.htm http://www.mercola.com/2000/dec/3/sucralose_d angers.htm "As of 2006, only six human trials have been published on Splenda (sucralose). Of these six trials, only two of the trials were completed and published before the FDA approved sucralose for human consumption. The two published trials had a grand total of 36 total human subjects. 36 people sure doesn't sound like many, but wait, it gets worse, only 23 total were actually given sucralose for testing and here is the real killer: The longest trial at this time had lasted only four days and looked at sucralose in relation to tooth decay, not human tolerance." |

| I avoid MSG, artificial sweetners, trans fats, HFCS, soy, margarine, unsaturated oils, artificial colours and flavours, and cheap, mass produced, processed 'food products', fake foods, low fat foods, and the like. It's not exactly difficult. They don't appeal to me anyway. | |||

| This reminded me of something I read a while back. I dont' know who said it, or I'd credit it. : 'There are times in life when it's worthwhile being ashamed. When I've lost my temper at a child, betrayed a secret, insulted a friend behind his back, I've committed an actual error worthy of actual guilt. But eating pizza is fairly low on the scale of moral lapses. No one on her deathbed looks back and says, "I'm filled with regret that I ate too much ice cream and not enough kale." |

Interesting about nexium. I did have the bacteria you were talking about - so I had to take 8 pills a day for a month to get rid of it, then take nexium for another two months. I gained weight during this time as well. My stomach is still not like it was before all this happened. I realise now that the whole thing began because of *low* stomach acid. (low acid causes same symptoms as excess) Right now I'm trying to heal my digestion - increasing stomach acid and getting probiotics from (homemade) kefir. |

| I saw one of the food channel chefs a week or so ago do this: In a roasting pan she placed two peices of chicken (hers were skin on, quarter sections), added a couple of potatoes in chunky cubes, some red pepper chunks, a quartered onion, some cloves of garlic and whatever else she had on hand, drizzled it with olive oil (not EV since it's being heated) sprinkled with salt and pepper and put it in a hot oven til done. Looked very good when it came out and no trouble at all. |

We are fairly frequent chipotle customers in our family. The quality is so much better than the usual offerings, we don't even bother with other fast food places. I have tried several things, but my 'usual' is a carnitas burrito bol with the works. I dont' worry about how many calories are in it - I am happy with about a third. Who needs more anyway? |

Hi all. It's a sunny day here and hopefully it will be warm. Spring is getting close, and today I'm starting my seeds in a seed tray:). Yesterday I painted my kitchen (all but the bits I cannot reach. My husband has been assigned those areas :) ). Today though, I'm taking a day off...sortof :). My husband is working today, so we're going in to have lunch with him. After that, I have a little necessary shopping to do. I'd rather just enjoy the sunshine, but it can't be helped. I have a roast out for dinner tonight and my son has a rousing game of Pokemon Monopoly planned for the evenings's entertainment ;) |

We didn't want them this year, but had to buy some cuz a friend's kid was selling them. It's not a matter of calories. I wouldn't mind if they were made with good ingredients, but if I went into a shop and saw them on the shelf, I wouldn't consider buying them. I make cookies at home all the time (my latest fav is Alton Brown's Chewy chocolate chip), so a store bought cookie doesn't measure up. |

| Now that it sounds like you have the culprit, if you still want the digestive benefits, you may want to try kefir instead of yogurt. It can be made cheaply and easily at home and is more beneficial than yogurt. If you're interested You can find out more info here : http://users.sa.chariot.net.au/~dna/kefirpage .html This website can probably help you get started: http://www.seedsofhealth.co.uk/ |

| Weight Loss | Question About Sodium Intake | Mar 02 2007 18:47 (UTC) |

Like everything else, sodium intake is an individual thing. Not everyone should limit sodium. For me, being told to limit salt was a very unhealthy peice of advice. Now that I know, I add as much salt as I want, and if I drink a lot of water, add salt to it. Not refined salt, of course. I still avoid that. |

| Foods | Best wholewheat bread? | Mar 02 2007 17:18 (UTC) |

I have never seen a loaf of grocery store bread I would consider eating. Bread 'requires' few ingredients - wheat, water and salt - yeast if it is not sourdough bread. Contrary to what many think, even sugar is not necessary. However, most of the bread in the US is highly sweetned so that most consumers have become accustomed to the sweet taste and artificial texture, they don't even realise this is not how bread should be. In addition to sugar, usually in several forms, the breads are usually full of synthetic vitamins, soy, transfats and other unhealthy oils. Occasionally I find a rustic bread with nothing but wheat, water, salt and yeast, but even those labels have to be read with care, and sometimes stores change their recipes, so a brand that was once okay, is now not so good. One commercial brand without trans fat or hfcs is Rudi's, but even that is so sweet we can't use it for sandwiches and use it only when we can't get anything else. We spent some time searching out a local baker who supplies bread to stores that specialise in healthy foods like and makes bread with only four ingredients. It took some time and effort in the beginning, but we now have a source of good bread (other than homemade) and we are supporting a local business that supplies a healthy, well made, product. |

| Weight Loss | how much fat should I eat in a day? | Mar 02 2007 16:57 (UTC) |
|
|
I eat a lot of fat - I feel healthier and have no cravings when I get enough fat. It also helps with the absorbtion of many nutrients and keeps blood sugar stable. Most of my fat comes from whole milk, cheese, yogurt and butter. I never eat 'low fat' foods, and usually cook with butter or extra virgin coconut oil and use EV Olive oil unheated. In addition to transfats, I avoid polyunsaturated fats which have recently been discovered to be less healthy than previously thought. |

So many of these posts sound like something I could have written. In last two months, I"ve lost one pound. I did lose 8 last summer, but only because I was ill. When I started to get better, it came back. I'm going to give it another try, and hopefully this time it will stay off. I have a question about the journal feature. I'd like to use it to keep track of what I am doing, mainly as information for myself. Can it be totally private or open to only select friends? |

I'm of the opposite opinion - I trust my body (stomach), not some calorie chart any day. 'Enough' is about more than just volume or calories. Often if a food is high in nutrients, it doesn't take as much to supply our needs. If it says it had enough, no need to stuff more in there. |

| I don't know specifically about insulin. I do know that aside from being extremely unhealthy, they have been shown to hinder weight loss efforts. Of course, the results of studies often depends on who funds them... I'm not interested in weight loss at the expense of good health, so I don't touch them. |

| Foods | More ovaltine...I mean.. opinions! please? | Feb 28 2007 20:03 (UTC) |

Wouldn't dream of it. When I get a craving, I have it - whatever it is. I dont' try to subtitute a 'version' of what I want. That doesn't really help. You eat the substitute you didn't want, and still want whatever it was you were craving in the beginning. And for many people, that means eating twice as much. I used to share an office with a women who was queen of this. I'd watch her eating a foot long sandwich (or whatever was on her 'list' of acceptable foods) and complaining the whole time (like I wanted to hear this) about how she didn't really like it (but it was 'healthy') and then a half hour later she'd head out to get something for lunch she really wanted. Me, I just eat what I want - the real thing - and forget about it. Result? No cravings. If I want it, I eat it - so what is left to obsess about? And since the food is so good and just what I want, I'm satisfied with a lot less. Interesting you mention as two of your three examples, chicken - protein, not carbs. It may not be the carbs as other things - like salt, or the texture. Sometimes it helps to think about the foods you crave and what it is specifically about them. And then, sometimes it is just the food :) |

| Foods | hydrogenated soy bean oil | Feb 28 2007 19:40 (UTC) |

|
All hydrogenated oils are bad for you. HFCS are bad for you - and there is no level of either one that is truly considered safe. There are cereals and crackers and other products out there that do not use these substances. The more we chose healthier foods, (and stop handing over money for stuff that will ultimately harm us) the quicker companies will stop using these unhealthy substances and calling it 'food'. |
