I'd like to join this group! Height - 5'6" Age - 25 Starting Weight - 130.2 (weight this morning) Goal Weight - 120
I used this site in 2005/2006 to go from 130ish down to 118ish. I maintained that weight with a bit of good muscle gain (up to 122ish) from working out with a trainer for all of 2006 and half of 2007, but over 2008 I gradually moved back to 130 from being slack with my diet and exercise routine. I still hit up the gym and eat healthy most of the time but I know I need to crack down and keep track of my calories and workouts again to lose this ten pounds. I will check start logging my progress on this thread on Mondays! |

| Foods | Ramen Noodles? Bad or Good for dieters? | Feb 28 2008 20:06 (UTC) |

| ramen noodles are BAD. super processed, all carbs, and if you use the packets, SODIUM overkill. i imagine eating some of the noodles every now and then with some other source of protein and fat wouldn't derail your diet, but definitely don't use the flavoring. | |||

| I think lbaxleyl1048's point is that if you are able to do 20 reps of any exercise with ease, the weight you are using is too light to give you any benefit. The point of lifting weights is to get stronger/stay strong, and doing three easy sets will not do anything for you, whether your intentions are to be fit, look cut, or just feel great. You have to challenge your muscles or they will not improve so the last few reps of each set should be difficult. If you're not sweating after fifteen minutes of weights/machines, you're not doing something right! | |||
| Fitness | Does Muscle Soreness Cause Temporary Weight Gains? | Jan 15 2008 16:14 (UTC) |
|
| In my experience I've seen a slight weight gain in the few days after a difficult strength training session, but I mostly see the difference in how my clothes fit. They're much tighter! Both side effects eventually even out after the muscles begin to heal and you're no longer retaining water. | |||
| Fitness | Hey fitness buffs, I need help figuring out my activity/calorie level! | Nov 09 2007 03:20 (UTC) |
|
| I'm 5'6" and 124, too. :) I'm 24 years old.
I use "light activity" and log all my exercise in addition to that. I live in New York without a car so I walk A LOT and I don't count that as exercise, which is why I chose "light". If you're a student, unless your campus is super spread out, you're going to be sitting most of the time, so I'd say go with "sedentary" and log all your activity. Good luck! |

| "Remember computers are dumb."
I'm in IT and I think the more accurate phrase is "remember, users are dumb." Computers are programmed by humans, after all, so computers are only as dumb as the people that create them. :) |

| Fitness | THUNDER THIGHS!! how do i tame these beasts?? | Oct 14 2007 01:30 (UTC) |

| to lean out thighs, it is better to do isolation movements to strength train rather than compound. in other words do the quad machine, and the hamstring machine, and the inner thigh machine, rather than doing squats that work everything at once. doing latter is great if you're looking to build muscle but not if you don't want the area to swell. | |||

| Fitness | Getting a Flat Stomach | May 22 2007 15:52 (UTC) |

| There is no shortcut to a flat stomach. You have to stay away from foods high in sodium and sugar, as well as do ab-tightening exercises just about every day. Even if you only do pilates core moves for about ten minutes/day, it helps to keep your stomach muscles tight and compact. Also, cardio cardio cardio! | |||

| Fitness | Working out-- making me too manly =( | May 15 2007 01:55 (UTC) |

| digdig i think you look GREAT! not manly at all! i have been feeling manly as well. i started seeing a personal trainer months ago and i was scared of bulking up but my trainer assured me that it flat out wouldn't happen because i have a small frame and a female, that apparently it's really difficult for women to gain lots of muscles without serious lifting and protein intake. WELL my thighs have gotten much bigger and i've gained five pounds! YES, it's muscle, but i'm still irritated. i freaked out on the trainer and we have changed my lower body routine to strictly isolation movements (lunges) instead of compound exercises (like squats and presses) so as to hopefully not build anymore muscle, only tighten and cut. Thus far it's working, plus I've cut my calories down a bit. I definitely have to watch my diet or i look bulky. good luck! | |||

| Yes the side effects will go away. For me it was almost immediate relief. It took a while to lose all the weight I had gained (30 pounds) but I instantly lost 5 (mostly bloat/water weight), my head was clearer (not so emotional), and the hot flashes went away. Unfortunately so did the boobs. :) | |||

| Exercise has made my thighs bigger! The rest of me has gotten smaller, more dense, but the thighs! There's really no fighting it, but men love tight muscular thighs on women. They're very sexy so learn to love them! | |||

| If you were drinking liquor, like a vodka and soda, I'd say don't count it, but you're drinking beer, and beer can definitely put on some pounds. :) Believe me, I love the stuff, too, and I have a hard time living without it so I allow myself to drink it but I try to cut back. | |||

| Fitness | Exercise to gain muscle, but not to lose fat. | May 01 2007 01:26 (UTC) |

| I'm 5'6" and 125 pounds as well. I was 118 when I joined a gym last year and I've gained 7 pounds since I began working out doing cardio as well as seeing a personal trainer twice a week for intense strength training. I've gained a LOT of muscle, my fat percentage is down, but my pants are definitely tighter so I've gained some fat, too. To build muscle, you have to eat, and eat and eat, protein especially, and I've found it very difficult to balance gaining muscle and not gaining fat. Since you're my exact size, if you ever find a good solution, let me know!! I added you as a friend, btw. | |||
| Foods | Is to much peanut butter bad | Apr 30 2007 20:07 (UTC) |

| Who says peanut butter is bad?!? It's very good for you, as long as you don't eat the whole jar. One serving is two tablespoons so if you don't go over that, what's the problem? It's loaded with good fat, protein and fiber. I eat peanut butter all the time, too. At least a tablespoon a day. | |||

| Fitness | another question about protien | Apr 30 2007 15:15 (UTC) |

| You need quality carbs AND protein, usually a 4:1 ratio. Clif bars are great. Definitely need protein more than anything IMO though because protein is the only thing that repairs muscle. If you're just doing cardio, you'll need more carbs after exercising, but when you're strength training, protein it up. | |||

| Fitness | favorite arm exercises | Apr 29 2007 19:39 (UTC) |
|
| To really get your arms to pop out, not only do you need to do shoulders, biceps and triceps, but you should work the chest and back as well. There are all sorts of machines at the gym to do this. Push-ups are great for that little fat bulge you're talking about, and not the girlie kind of push-ups, either. Do the real thing. :) | |||
| Weight Loss | muscle uses more energy than fat right? | Apr 29 2007 19:32 (UTC) |

| There's always Amstel Light, but personally I think it tastes like piss. :) So unless I don't have many calories to spare, I stick with a good wheat beer like Blue Moon. Yum! I think I just talked myself into buying a six-pack for tonight's Sopranos episode, haha. | |||
| Foods | So, anybody eat any real food? | Apr 23 2007 19:59 (UTC) |
16 |
| That is true piffany (like FAGE yogurt) but it is RARE to find a product labeled "fat free" with the same ingredients as the real thing, just minus the fat. Most companies add a ton of sugar and/or sodium into fat free foods to make them taste better. I would much rather eat the real higher calorie stuff with the fat than eat extra sugar. Fat is good for you, too! | |||
