Health & Support Have you lowered your cholesterol with medication or foods? An Adventure! Jun 23 2007

Just got my cholesterol level checked via donating blood.  Went from over 400 something to  (drumroll please...)  now 307.

Still very high!!!!!

But I'm glad that I have made some sort of change, and this is without using meds, only diet changes.

As I keep losing weight, hopefully this will keep lowering.  Also, since it was only through blood donation process, didn't find out my separate HDL/LDL levels or triglycerides.  My insurance from new job kicks in at the end of July and I will get all that info then.

P.S. since I've started a new job 1.5 months ago my weight loss has really slowed down.  But at least I'm not going backwards and gaining again, or reverting to eating trash again.

Good luck to you all.

I make a lot of mistakes and I try not to sweat it - usually just typing too fast.

But thanks for the "a lot" vs. "alot" thingie because I always get that one wrong.

*drilling it into my brain*  A LOT, A LOT, A LOT

I've never read Fountainhead (the library has a looooong waiting list - I'm still waiting for it) but Atlas Shrugged is one of my favorites!

wow I just looked at the members who listed reading as one of their interests:  Found 3349 users with interest reading:
that's 34 pages of people!

Hooray for reading!  I'm totally a book nut and I read everything I can get my hands on.

In college I worked in a daycare, and they always boiled the ground beef - seemed gross to me, but when I tasted it, wasn't much different.

Same with using the ground turkey as a substitute.  Sounded gross at first, but ends up tasting about the same.

I still have to play a kind of tricky hiding method of using the ground turkey now because daughter of mine refuses to eat it if she knows it's the ground turkey, not the ground beef.  But if she doesn't know, she doesn't notice at all!

Ditto on the oatmeal and yogurt.

Also ground flaxseed (makes my oatmeal seem more filling) and most especially WATER.

It took me awhile to get used to the changes but it's true that if you keep it up it WILL get easier and become a natural pattern of choices for you! :)

Congratulations!

I read your profile and wanted to add:  my dad is 61 and he was 220 lbs last year, now down to 160 and so much healthier and happier.  The biggest change - his attitude and life outlook really turned more positive.

Great job, enjoy your success!

I love me some rice and I was surprised how much I liked the brown rice once I converted.  I like to add broccoli and cauliflower (cooked) and mash up a tilapia fish fillet, and add some Ms. Dash salt-free seasoning Tomato, Basil and Garlic flavor.

YUM!  My favorite dinner.
Weight Loss do you eat before you go to bed? Apr 11 2007

Lately I've noticed that if I don't eat a small snack before bed then I am sick all night, stomach pains and feeling like I'm going to puke.

I wonder if its actual HUNGER.  (It's kinda sad that I don't even know, as I've never been physically hungry in my life I guess.)  Maybe my body is now fully trained to expect a little coal into the fire every couple of hours or so...?

Dinner at 7 then bed w/o snack at 11 makes my body not happy.

There is a part of me that loves this stuff, and a part of me that hates this stuff...    but mostly I wonder just how hot I might look after the makeup, professional photo shoot, lighting, airbrushing etc.

Hmm....   too bad it would be "fake".  But still it's nice to know that these people aren't as perfect as the image they are paid to project - except maybe Halle Berry, she's still so cute no matter what!  She was still suicidal at some point in her life, so no one and nothing is perfect.  Hard to remember sometimes.

Making the nutrition changes was hard for me... but I feel like I have the eating stuff down now.  Cheese is a biggie, no doubt.  I miss you, cheese!  Eggs - another biggie, I hate eggbeaters and such.  I miss you, too, eggs!  (do you miss me?)

I don't know if my dietary changes have made a difference because I haven't been in to get bloodwork done yet.  But they must be working, right?!  They must!  The pure slop I was putting in my body was not helping any.  Some of it is genetic but I am doing what I can for the other part.

And I appreciate all the info ya'all put up here re: niacin.  My dad has a little pill bottle of niacin and we've been directed to use it on him "in an emergency" (like if he has a heartattack).  So I never reallly understood what it does, but was thinking it must be like aspirin...   this has been on my mental list of stuff to google for ages but I never looked into it myself.

Positive vibes to you all :)

Please sign me up for 80oz a day (= 560 oz/wk = 2,400 oz/April).  I think you guys who put these challenges together are awesome.

Adding water (and eliminating soda) has made a big difference in my health, attitude, weightloss, and especially MY SKIN!

I never drank water in my life!  I drank soda from age 2 or so on, and making the changeover was hard!  Sometimes I still struggle on "busy days" but its getting easier  :)  Yay!  I'm so totally down for this.

My father had his FIRST heartattack at age 36!  He wasn't even overweight.  Since then he has had five different heart surgeries - bypass surgery a few times and the balloon surgery twice.

I am now 34, overweight, and the last time I had my levels checked my total cholesterol was above 400.  I was given the Lipitor and tried it, really gave me headaches and made my skin breakout.  I don't have insurance so getting the meds and getting checked is a problem...

I have changed my diet and although I haven't lost all the weight yet (I'm almost half way) I am MUCH healthier!  I can't wait to get my levels checked again, and as soon as I do I will post them.

Good luck to you all!

260 (past) + 60 (new) = 320 minutes

I don't think I'm going to make the goal, but I'm not going to quit.  I will get as close as I can to the goal.  If I do an hour walk a day, or two 30 min walks a day, for the next week, I will be pretty close!

When I do make myself exercise it really changes my whole attitude/mood - I guess that's the endorphins kicking in.  When I am super grumpy my daughter tells me, "Go take your walk!"

Poop on the rainy weather - I wish I could afford a treadmill or an eliptical so I could do this every night in my living room in front of the TV.

AWESOME!

It was hard for me to quit, too.  I miss the caffeine.  I have had a few sodas in the past two months, but I can never drink more than a few sips of it when I do... it's too much, too sweet, too carbonated, too.... something.

I like to add instant 'onthego' green tea flavored packets to my water, but it's not a necessity.  I never thought I would like plain old water but I really do now!

And I've noticed my skin has really cleared up and looks so great now.

GOOD FOR YOU - I love hearing how others beat the soda!

1.  What song do you remember singing your heart out to the most (pretending to be a rockstar!) when you were a teenager?  Aerosmith's Love in an Elevator, gross I know

2.  Have you ever pulled a practical joke on anyone?  What was it? No, but my sister was the queen of this and they were all pulled on me.  Her favorite was to sneak into my bed in the middle of the night when I got up to pee... when I came back to bed she would grab my leg or something and scare the **** outta me!  MEAN!

3.  If you could use your skills to help the homeless, what is it you would do/volunteer/build?  I just completed my internship at a homeless shelter as a caseworker, it really proved to me that social work is what I want to do

4.  Where are you when you're the happiest...?  Surfin' the net alone at night after I get the kiddo to bed, boring, but pure bliss in it's own way.  It's all MY time, no one else's.

5.  Would you ever consider leaving the hustle and bustle of your life now for one of living off the land...?  Take your family and leave your material possessions behind?  If I knew what I was doing, yes!  I would have to study up a lot to be able to live like that.

6.  What was the best meal you have ever had in a restaurant?  Sauerbraten (sp) at a German restaurant in Kansas City.

7.  Would you ever consider, if it didn't cost you a penny, having plastic surgery wherever you wanted on your body?  What would you choose?  YES smaller nose, smaller boobs, entire body and facial hair removal.

8.  If a friend who was overweight asked you to recommend three things ONLY that would help them lose weight, what would they be?  (Other than sending them to CC, of course!)  WATER, min exercise, PERSISTENCE

9.  What is your favourite dessert of all time?  tiramisu!!!

10.  How is your progress so far at CC?  slow but steady I guess.  Slow.  But it's working as long as I keep at it.
The Lounge No fashion sense........ Mar 21 2007

I have horrible fashion sense.  I feel comfortable in plain, if not "frumpy" clothing, but I also secretly long to dress better.  I wish people would give me fashion advice, but I always feel to embarrassed to ask.

Sometimes I try to mix it up a little on my own, and I put something new on (something more tailored, or better fitting, or stylish, I know this all sounds so generic - I don't have enough fashion sense to explain what I mean here) and feel great, but then I go out into the world and I start feeling uncomfortable and thinking that people are going to laugh at me.  I've always had a large bust, even when I wasn't overweight, and that makes me self-conscious.  If I don't dress all "grandma" then I feel like people are going to be thinking I'm trying to show off my ta-tas.

I need to not worry what other people think.  I want to be hot but I want to be comfortable and not flashy, too.  Is there a middle ground?
