The Lounge College Presidents ask for debate on drinking age - 18 or 21 - make the case Aug 20 2008

I am a DUI counselor, and have been listening to both young and old people in this situation for many years. I have heard hundreds of people say their drinking decreased (for whatever reason - the kick was gone, they werent quite so young/dumb) when they became 21.

I think the drinking age should be lowered. I dont believe it is effective now. This is a big college town, we have oh maybe 50 bars and many many fraternity and apartment parties all the time. The drinking age was 18 when I was 18, in the stone age, and these kids seem to party even more (which is saying alot).

Anyway, my two cents. I dont think I'll ever lack for clients, regardless.

Weight Loss Brand New...need friends and accountability. Any short ladies out there around 200 lbs? Aug 20 2008

I am another shorty (4 11 1/2) but older - 56. You guys are so smart to do it now, i had two knee replacements last year, not fun.

I gained again during the recuperation and am back at CC, have to agree that good food choices and exercise both have to be in place. Plus, slow is good.

My job (counselor) is also sedentary, but without the food issues. I feel lucky that I can keep fruit, yogurt etc. in the fridge. I just have to stay away from the candy bowl here, which is typically ok, but once I eat sugar - the rest of the day is shot.

Current weight 185, first goal is 150, hopefully by spring. I cant thing any further ahead than that :-) Actually first goal is eating a healthy lunch today. Keep on keepig on !

Just checking in - we have a nice size group, and really some good motivators I think

:-) Everyone have a lovely Tuesday, and those of you down south stay safe out of the storm!

I lost about 30 pounds with CC help in 2006, then had 2 knees replaced and sort of got cocky - thought I could do it w/o logging etc. I do jazzercise 3-4 times per week, and am grateful for that, but the eating out got toooo often and toooo much (do pretty well at home and work). I am 56, weigh 188, but only 5' tall. My first goal is 150 by next spring, so our Halloween date will be a perfect first milestone! Kathi

WOW you really do have alot going on! I am a grandma to 4 little boys - way less stressful than being a parent! They sure have alot of energy though. I wonder if your college has a workout room or something that you could hit for a half hour before you head home? I have taken a couple cool classes like tai chi at our community college also.

My oldest daughter's kids are 1 and 3, she carries the younger one around in a backpack all the time - something must be working (probably chasing 2 boys) because she is slimmer than I have ever seen her (she is 33).

Anyway, keep checking in, and I am going to add you to my friend list if that is ok ?

Fitness knee injury, please help! Aug 18 2008

Listen to your body! Speaking from big experience here - I had both of my knees replaced last year. Not at all fun, and it took a long time to get there. Still, I am in my mid-fifties and docs often say you cant do it before 60. I assume you have a long way to go, and hopefully never will.

The things that required twisting seemed to cause the most difficulty.

All is well now, and I jazzercise most days, but dont jump. We can only pound on ourselves so much :-) Take care, happy healing! Kathi

Count me in too! My name is Kathi and I am (once again) at the beginning of my weight loss instead of the end like some of you. I lost 30 pounds with CC then had knee replacements and sort of lost focus. I jazzercise 3-4 times per week and am sooo grateful to be moving again :-)

Weight now close to 190, 170 by Halloween sounds very do-able! Cheers!

It IS hard to pick just one thing, because they all relate so much, but....

I think exercising most every day helps with the water, staying away from processed foods and soda, feeling better in general. Sort of like a row of dominoes, if you mess with one, everything else tumbles. And checking in here, logging, journaling, is definitely a BIG domino :-)

I agree with everyone above, and have been able to have a "treat" when I need to if I dont get crazy - there's my problem - especially re: sugar - if I have a little, I want MORE MORE MORE - seems to set something off. Dont know if that is just me (there is a lot of diabetes in my family and that scares me) or if most folks react that way.

 Ice cream has been my downfall this summer, now we are going out for some on Sundays and I am not keeping it around. So far, working better....

Looks great Jenn - the spreadsheet wont let me put just totals, so we will need to go back and enter "1" for each section. I have done what I could find, I think you gathered more info than I had. When you get this at home tonight, will you go through and double-check????

Thanks for all you have done, with everything going on at home, ESPECIALLY!!!!!!!

Hi there! If newbies come in to check us out ..... hi from team eliminators!!!! My name is Kathi - leave me a message here if you would, so I can add you to my journal list.  You can also go to my profile and send me an email.

Jules has the challenges posted above this thread in the games forum. When you read week one,  it will have you think about recording your weight measurements, also questions about BMI and other things on this site. You can record them in a private place, or your journal. Let me know how you're doing!

Hows everyone else????

Thanks for the recipes - looks great! Jenn's covers two of our challenges this week i think!!!

Could jennelaw and JenneE post a recipe for us this week?

I'll take next week, along with another "someone" -= volunteer?

Getting close to filling out week one and week two points sheets - looks lots easier than the first go-around. Layna is finished, and I am. I will put our points on the sheet tonight (keeping it at home) and anyone else who is ready, or even part-way.

Have a nice Monday, be in touch - I'll be home on puter tonight if you want to email or yahoo chat. Kathi

This is a great post - I am 5', also spread out pretty easily - 165 now down from 190, BUT I anever weighed more than 130 until that change thing..... HATE it

BUT on a positive (well almost....) I feel like I am taken more seriously since I have a few years and pounds. Hated that people think you are childish or not smart because you are small.  And didnt like that getting carded thing very well either. Still will be glad when the rest of the pounds are gone!

For Liz - if you could answer these here or in my journal under week one message, I can add it to our team sheet:
    * a)  *Weight* a Minute!!!
       &nb sp;  o How Much Do {{{you}}} Weigh?
       &nb sp;  o How often do you Weigh?
       &nb sp;  o Why?
       &nb sp;  o If you don't get weighed, that's ok!  Sometimes it's better to put the scales in storage!  The point is to figure out what you do and why!  Then let's keep doing it as long as it works for us in our lives :)  Everyone adjusts what they do when something quits working!  Including Weighing ourselves :)

    * b) *Weight Log*
       &nb sp;  o Have you considered tracking your weight in the free and cool tool *weight log* here at calorie-count or some other place like your computer at home or in a paper journal?
       &nb sp;  o On the calorie-count weight log, do you understand the *blue line*?
       &nb sp;  o Do you understand the *green line*?

    * c)  *BMI*
       &nb sp;  o Do you know yours?
       &nb sp;  o What is it, how do you find yours and how is it calculated?
       &nb sp;  o Do you prefer the general tables, the *formula* or a calculator like here?

    * d) *Measurements*
       &nb sp;  o take yours.
       &nb sp;  o Neck, upper arm, forearm and wrist
       &nb sp;  o Chest (all), Breast for Women
       &nb sp;  o Waist and hips
       &nb sp;  o Thigh, Calf and ankle

    * e) *Exercise*
       &nb sp;  o regular points for
       &nb sp;        + recording what you normally do each week
       &nb sp;               # What are your exercise activities?
       &nb sp;               # how long
       &nb sp;               # how often
       &nb sp;               # how intense or level, incline, weight amount, reps, etc...
       &nb sp;        + What would you like to do or change in the next 6 weeks?
       &nb sp;  o Bonus Points available for doing your normal thing this week!
       &nb sp;        + points for each exercise *session* you do
       &nb sp;        + up to 5 sessions count
       &nb sp;  o Bonus Points available for doing 1 something *extra*
       &nb sp;        + for adding a *new* exercise, or
       &nb sp;        + adding an extra *workout*
       &nb sp;        + doing more, longer or farther, or
       &nb sp;        + increasing intensity
       &nb sp;        + just getting started for the first time
       &nb sp;        + just starting to think about why you should start exercising if you don't

Hi everyone!!! I think we've heard from everyone except twindaze. I'll drop of a note to Jules, so she knows. Not really concerned about a replacement, and I think she's about overloaded with all this.

My weekend was a bust, didnt do too bad on food, didnt journal, didnt computer, didnt do much. Guess you need that now and again.

Working with accountant on last yrs taxes/payroll - if anyone here is an accountant - HATS OFF TO YOU!!! No clue how folks do this day/day. Almost done, cant think about it anymore anyway!

I am right now going to run around and pick everyone's stuff and enter on sheet. JennE - I am going to email what I have to you for a lookover and add to ok????

Back later - happy week!!!! K
