If you want to focus on your legs, you can still swim. Just grab a kickboard. Your legs will be doing all the work, without the impact of running. Plus it is totally relaxing.

Finally some movement! small as it is, I am just happy to know that my body is capable of going lower than 140. GEEZ!

Anyway, I think I need to loosen up and tone down my neuroses. Conscious but not psycho, that is the goal.

Congrats to everyone so far this week. Let's see where we are on Thurs.

P.s. I am curious about slimfast. Anyone seen positive results they like?

Also- my bf wants to buy a wii, and he is trying to convince me to do it by promising to buy a wii fit (so I wouldnt have to drive 20 minutes to the gym). Is the wii fit more than just fun? Does it actually make you sweat? I have been trying to find reviews about it, but everyone seems to be reviewing it as a game. How is it as a workout? Can it substitute (or just supplement) the gym.

Merci buckets!

I'm in.

Even though I have seen zero progress in the last forum. In fact, I've seen negative progress. I'm hoping to turn it around this next go. My job's ending in two weeks, which means I'll have ample time to dedicate to the gym (until, well I don't anymore.) anyway- here's hoping!

This Thurs: 140.

This is where I started a couple months ago... clearly I am not doing something right. Clearly.

Hey all

So I took your good advice and bought a measuring tape and measured yesterday morning (and then- it broke, after one use! GNC piece of crap.)

So starting(over) stats

Waist: 29

Hips: 37

But my real problem area is the lower belly (above the hips, below the waist): 35

So anyway, I'll check up on that again in a couple weeks. In the meantime I've been hitting the gym hardcore (to prepare and then make up for the wedding disaster of last night (not mine... just one I attended). It was a whole fiasco, I hadn't had any alcohol in a month and a half, but I decided to make an exception last night, and I went a little nuts... I've always said, the only bad decisions I make when I drink are about food.. but enough of this tangent). I'm hoping if i just sweat a lot, and really push myself that at least my endurance will improve. I just need to see SOME kind of results even if I can't coax them out of my waistline.

SO- weighed myself at the gym this morning. It doesnt really count as comparison, because I usually only weigh myself in the evening (bad, I know. But it's the only time I have access to a scale). anyway it came out as 137.4.

I hope to see that number in the evening sometime soon. Happy Memorial day everyone! Go light on the bbq sauce and indulge in sweet sweet fruit.

Hey guys,

Thanks so much for the overwhelming support. I try to be really honest with my calories, but I'm sure little things sneak in that I don't always remember. I suppose what I should really do is carry a little book around with me and write down everything so i can put it in later. That worked when I tried to lose weight a couple years ago.

I'm also going to take zephyr's advice and start using other mechanisms to gauge my progress. I am skeptical that I am actually gaining muscle because my workouts are cardio based. I suppose I should also try to mix up my exercise a bit. Have other people had success with this? I like my workout because my gym has tvs/dvd players on all the cardio machines so I can watch a show and completely distract myself for an hour while use the elliptical. But losing weight isn't supposed to be easy, so I guess it is time to step outside my comfort zone. What do people recommend for mixing it up?

Again, thanks for all the support. I really appreciate it :)

It's days like today that make me want to quit.

Start weight: 138

Monday: 139

Today: 140

How is it that I can work out every day for 50 minutes, and eat under 1500 cals a day and still GAIN WEIGHT.  Honestly, it is exhausting.

I'm gunna go read a book for distraction. good work to everyone else, if you have any secrets you've got to let me know!

Last Monday: 138.2 (?) I think

Time to get back on track. Good luck to all this week. I'm giving the vinegar cider a go. we'll see how I like it. What is the recommended use? Take before meals? Twice daily?

I love vinegar, so I don't think I'll mind (yes. I know I'm weird. I also love eating lemons by themselves. Yes I know that ruins your teeth. One vice at a time... one vice at a time.)

Man do I hate weighing in on days like this

SW: 138.8

CW: 140.0

I've been doing everything right. Lots of cardio, cals around 1400-1600. It is just so painful to watch the scale climb back up!

I'm hoping it has something to do with 'womanly issues' but I've never blamed that before. Ug. And this weekend the bf and I are going to Montreal (where he's from) to get the tour from his father of every fattening restaurant they ever ate at. Luckily I am lactose intolerant (HA! I never thought I'd say that) and can't be forced to eat the fried cheese delicacy I keep hearing about.

Hmm... not looking forward to weigh in on monday.

Hey all,

First WI is pretty disappointing: 138.8

But that's just all the more reason to take this really seriously.

GW for 4 weeks: 134

But I'd really like to hit 130 by mid July, so I must work it hard.

Cheers to us all.

Well, here we are. Last thursday weigh in
SW: 141.4
CW: 138.6
It doesn't look like much improvement, but I am happy about this trend. In the next four weeks, I am going to have to gear up if I want to be 130 by early July. But as long as I know the numbers are moving I should be alright.
I am extra excited because today I finally (finally!) added some wegiht training to my work-out. I have been steadily increasing and intensifying my cardio over the past couple weeks, and today I took the plunge and did some weights. Let's hope I can get into a routine with this too (before you know it, I'll be at the gym til 8 every night!
Anyway, I'm loving the support so I'm in next time.
Goal/Challenge for monday: Don't let mother's day weekend be an excuse to fall into a rut. I want my final weigh in to be 138.

Hey all,
CW: 138.8
pretty decent weekend, though there were some definite low points (like tonight's moussaka. who knew an eggplant dish could pack so many calories... ok, I kind of guessed)
I wish i could stop deceiving myself, and just make some progress. Especially since I am devoting so much time to exercise. Anyway, most of the time I feel good that the numbers on the scale are going down. But I occasionally just bemoan how sloooooooooow it is going.
Goal? More fruits and veggies, less frozen yogurt

Hmm. Still at 139.4
Weighed yesterday and enjoyed a (fleeting) 138.8. I am hoping that is a premonition of next monday's weigh in.

Challenge: Shabbat dinner with friends tomorrow. Dinner is early too, so I might not have a chance to hit the gym first. Goal is to work out, even if I can't do a full 50 min. It is still worth it. Other goal is to eat 1/2 of what is given to me. and NOT have dessert, unless it is fruit. Ugh. it is going to be hard.

Good luck to everyone on a tempting spring weekend.

Sorry for such a brief message yesterday! I was gone all day. Work til 5, Gym til 6, and Atlanta Hawks NBA game til midnight. I can't believe we won. It was SUCH an incredible game!!

But anyway, all the screaming at the game got me so hyped!! I am ready to tackle this challenge head-on now. I used to just sort of see it as an auxilary thing, but if I want to do it, I might as well do it well (hmm this all sounded much more motivational and articulate in my head). The point? Take health seriously. Stop underestimating calories (every bite counts- literally). Start exercising and enjoying the spring weather.

Let's get this party started!

For the first time in (gasp) maybe a year, I think I am actually losing weight.
    SW: 141.6

I know it isn't a bigggg difference, but a consistent difference is the main thing. Up til now? I was just flip flopping around 141.
Goal: Don't screw it up this weekend. I am flying to California to visit my sister, and our family motto is "the sister's who eat together stay together" (that and "there is no such thing as a healthy tan" which is an interesting philosophy considering she lives in California, and I am about to move to Miami... but that is a conversation for another time). Maybe I should encourage a new motto "sisters that bike together (while wearing sunscreen!!)"?
Anyway, thank ye so much. I feel terrific today. And I half blame all of you.

Hepburn: I've fallen for sparkling water. Ask the bartender to load you with limes, and squeeze them in there. If you have something sparkly to drink, it keeps beer and cocktails from taunting you too much (it starts out hard, but gets easier). Decide to be a DD for the evening, and you'll have NO excuse to drink. In terms of eating? things get trickier. I try to order myself a large salad, hold the dressing and just use vinegar with a little oil. But definately eat before you go.

Good luck with your party, and try and have a little fun!!

Hepburn: wow that is such a tough challenge. Great work avoiding temptation.

My goal of the week (to exercise every day for 45-60 minutes) was thwarted this morning when I got in a fender bender and had to wait 1 hour for the police to arrive, thereby sucking up all my gym time before work. Damn it. Now I will have huge insurance bills to go along with my thighs ;)

Lesson of the week? Be a patient driver. sigh.......

    Woo Hoo!
I'm glad I finally have some GOOD news to report
    SW: 141.6
    LW:141.3
    CW: 140.0
I am especially excited about this because this past weekend marked the beginning of Passover, which meant: 2 nights in a row of all you can eat (you are 'required' to have 4 glasses of wine, but since I am going one month without alcohol -maybe longer if i like the results- i just filled my glass with sparkling water). I tried to avoid the desserts too, but flourless chocolate cake? and chocolate covered matzah? I couldn't say no. So today was a happy surprise!!
    !!!!
I also had an EXCELLENT workout today. The boyfriend was MIA, so I didn't have to rush home for dinner. Instead, Mean Girls was on TV, and I just elliptical-ed til I could elliptical no more.

So I am in high spirits. Let's hope progress stays positive. It seems like you guys all have it under control, so I will just keep following your lead. Thanks for all the motivation :)

    Ugh, I feel frustrated today.
    Monday W: 141.2 (?? i can't remember, maybe .4)
    CW: 141.6

I have been so excellent with my diet/exercise. During the day, I have GoLean Kashi for breakfast, and then assorted fruits and vegtables throughout the day (with a fresh vegetable salad for lunch) and a late afternoon lowfat yoghurt. And the gym? Super motivated! I have upped my intensity level (with the help of some rockin tunes) and even increased the duration of my cardio by ten minutes.
So why don't I see any changes?!
Incidentally, I feel a lot better. I recently realized I am pretty lactose intolerant. I didn't realize that the sucralose in Splenda (and thus in aaalll my diet sodas/ my favorite low-cal desserts) and sugar-free gum also contributed to this. So for the first time, I have cut out all sweeteners and dairy (except yoghurt, which is A-OKAY)... and I feel terrific. No more groaning and moaning after every meal... Maybe this is why I am not losing weight? Food no longer equals poison?
Anyway, goal is to keep doing what I am doing, and hope my body catches up soon. If nothing changes in a week, then I'll try something new.
Cheers and good luck to all! You are my daily motivation

Today was basically what I expected:

    LW: 141.2
    CW:140.6

Not much improvement (and certainly not improved by chinese for dinner... but I was so proud of myself- I only ate half, and took the other half home! I haven't done that since high school). But I am feeling encouraged, the workouts at the gym have been going really well lately. I even feel energized to do more after (my bf suggested that I should be upping my intensity then. Touche)...
So, all in all? I'm satisfied...
Goal for next week: 139! Slow and steady...

I agree, I have the same little pouch of stress weight around my middle.

When I had 25 pounds to lose (a couple years ago), I was motivated and determined, and 20 lbs came off pretty quickly (if not easily). Now I just have about 10 (well... 15 if I'm honest) and I can't seem to get that extra resolve. I still work out every day, I still count my calories, but I can tell I let things sneak in: chocolate cake once in a while, I go out to dinner way more often then I should (thus making it really difficult to accurately count cals). I never did those things when weight loss was a necessity rather than a luxury.

I guess the best thing I can advise is to make sure you aren't fooling yourself. If you are serious about those few extra pounds (like I would like to be) then just say NO to dessert for a couple weeks. NO Every. Single. Time. See if just cutting out sweets (or whatever is your particular vice) for a little while makes a difference...

    Thanks, Hepburn.
All your suggestions make sense, but I really needed to hear them to make it work. Especially the part about getting the food out of the house. I also like the idea of individual portions. I used to buy individually wrapped skinny cow ice cream sandwiches, and I never wanted to eat them because I knew each one was 130 cal down the hatch. It is much tougher to cheat like that. So that is certainly something to get back into.
    As for today
Weigh in: 141.2 (up from last week as expected, but I've been weighing at diff. times of day.. In fact, I will probably just weigh in on mon. and fri. from now on because those are the days i weigh in after work.
Exercise goals: 40+ minutes of cardio M-F!! And... adding strength training at least one day. (I'm a little afraid of the machines at my gym, so I haven't yet started doing this...)
Food goals: More veggies and nuts. Less chocolate. And lots and lots of H20 as usual. PLUS: new plan - spring clean out the gunk.

I try to be so healthy with my diet. Eating raw foods and lots of protein, but as soon as 8pm rolls around, there's no telling WHAT i will do.

Honestly, I feel like a monster: a vampire or a wolverine or some other ravenous creature that only comes out at night. In Buffy (my favorite TV show of all time) Oz (a wolverine) had to chain himself up during full moons. I honestly feel this way. Last night i ate a 1/2 quart of ice cream and about 1 dozen cookies. Of course then I couldn't sleep all night. Do I need to get locks for my cupboards that only activate when the sun goes down?

Other issue I have been facing lately: underestimating calories. It is my new resolution to be more generous with my guesses, but I still have a sneaking suspicion I am still fooling myself. Any good strategies you all have for not sabotaging yourself, one way or another?

Ok, I won't be able to weigh in until this evening, because I had to be at work too early. Soo I'll go to the gym after work and check then.
