Weight Loss anyone start at 350+ could not walk & breath? Desperately need help b4 I die. May 30 2007

Leeci,

1.  It is FANTASTIC that your hubby loves you no matter what!  That is a positive!  However, YOU and YOU alone have to fix you.  You cannot force your husband to exercise or eat healthy.  Is he overweight too?

2.  Have you given any thought to Roux En Y, gastric bypass surgery?!  I would not resign myself to death.  I would try Roux En Y, if nothing else.

3.  I have been 276 pounds.  My sister is 350 pounds.  My mom is 300 pounds.  My other sister is 250 pounds.  I currently weigh 237.  I struggle every day, every second with this addiction to food.  I eat when I am sad, happy, depressed, anxious, nervous, and for no reason at all.  I go up and down between 265 and 230's and cannot get it totally under control.  But, my sister at 350 cannot function any more.  I have been recommending Roux en Y to her, but she refuses.  She has relented to die first before a Roux en Y.  That to me is silly.  Why not try an intervention?!

4.  I heard a good way to describe weight loss:

70% is what you EAT

30% is exercise

SO:  Leeci, with this equation, which seems correct to me.  YOU HAVE 70% UNDER YOUR CONTROL RIGHT NOW!  If you lose 50 pounds simply with what you eat, and then start walking more, moving more, etc.  You will be fine.

My 350 sister worked 8 hours, and came home and sat on the couch the rest of the night.  She decided that for exercise, she would just simply STAND during every commercial of her shows at night.  THIS WAS EXERCISE AT HER WEIGHT.  GETTING UP OFF OF THE COUCH:  STANDING FOR 2 MINUTES, and SITTING BACK DOWN.

MOVE MORE:  EAT LESS

Those are the two behavioral keys.

Eat:

Lean meats

Whole Grains

Veggies

Fruits

It is all inside our own minds and hearts.  The key is NOT outside of us.  It does not reside in our loved ones, or with another entity.

The answer is inside of each of us.

:)

Marlene,

That is hysterical that you wore that monitor overnight!! I wonder what MY HEART rate goes down to at night.  I might have to try that.  I do have the Polar F4.  I LOVE IT.  IT does base your caloric expenditure on Height, Weight, Gender, and Heart rate.  It rocks.  The machines Elliptical and treadmills etc have to average out things somehow between genders, height, etc.   My heart rate monitor says that I burn less than what the Precor says and more than what the Matrix says, go figure.

I am not an "Eat back your calories that you burned while exercising" person.  What is the point of killing myself on the elliptical machine, if I am just going to eat back 700 calories?

No, no...  I want to keep that deficit.  The people on the biggest loser are not eating back their calories that they burn or they would never lose that much weight in a weeks time.

Mulitivitamin, calcium, veggies fruit, lean meat whole grain, about 1,500 calories per day and burn 700 per day.  THAT for me, is a great plan...   now if I was better at staying at 1,500, I'd be doing good, but I eat out of stress, happiness, boredom, and specifically when I am not even a bit hungry.  :(

Fitness Some cardio days are SO HARD: WHY? Any physical explanations? Apr 07 2007

Now, here is what makes me afraid of myself, you guys....

I took a break yesterday.  I did not do cardio, or weight lifting.

Now, today....  I so don't want to go do anything.

I have this obsessive type of personality.  It is all or nothing.  That is what makes me afraid of myself.  I am trying to enjoy life in moderation, but that is difficult for me.

I am either counting every calorie that enters my mouth, or eating everything in sight without concern.  I either exercise like a machine, or then want to sit and eat Cheetos, and Ben & Jerry's and watch TV.

So, I will pick myself up, step away from the computer and go to the YMCA.

Talk to you all later.......

Hmmmm....

(Thanks)  :o)

I am eating actually MUCH MORE than I would like to.  1,800 to 2000 or more on bad days.  :(

But, I am trying to eat more fruits veggies, whole grains and increasing my protein intake with a serving of canadian bacon in the AM and two 70 calorie eggs poached on an english muffin for instance....

My favorite thing to make is a lower calorie taco salad.  I get the 96 / 4 % LEAN ground beef and brown it into taco meat with taco bell seasoning.  I get a huge plate full of green lettuce and dump 1/4 pound of the meat on it, and 1/4 cup 2% milk cheese, and pico di gallo, and salsa, and light sour cream...........   YUMMY

So, while my eating habits have changed....   if I were eating 1,200 to 1,500 calories per day strictly, the weight would be falling off.  :)

I just cannot figure out why on occassion my workouts are so physically difficult, that I just want to cry.  My mind tells me that I just cannot hang on for another minute (although I do, at a much less brisk pace).

We rock 9 weekers!  We have 8 weeks left to summer.

REMEMBER:

We are NOT Victims of food.  We are NOT victims of other people.  We are NOT Victims of our desires.

We can CONTROL ourselves.  We can CONTROL urges.  We can BE HEALTHY.  We are in control our choices.

Everything that we need to be healthy is on the inside of us.  Everything that we need to be successful at weight loss to a healthy weight and maintaining an exercise program is internal.  It is not about a fancy gym.  It is not about a fancy program, or fancy packaged food.

It is about the choices that we make.

  • Make the right choices this week!  :o)  WE CAN DO IT!!!
Next weigh in:

Weight Loss I hurt my knee Apr 03 2007

1
I had the same issue not long ago.  I was so scared.  I had 90cc's of fluid drawn off one knee and cortisone and marcaine injections into both knees two different occassions within a couple of months.  I also did PT like crazy and did exactly what she told me to do (the PT).

Then I started lifting weights and working out on the elliptical machine like she suggested when I got better.

My knees have still been painful, but I can walk and most importantly is STRENGTHING THE MUSCLES THAT SURROUND AND SUPPORT THOSE KNEES!  Leg presses, leg curls, calf raises, hip adductors and abductor muscle strengthing.....   These help so much!

Stay positive and focused on HEALING.  ICE REST ELEVATION and then strengthing those muscles.  :)

Weight Loss what happens in vegas, doesn't stay in vegas Apr 02 2007

ROFLOL
That is too funny!  I just got back from Vegas.  We ate at Ah Sin @ Paris.  We had Sushi which is a good choice!  Then tempura veggies and shrimp and scallops, Bad Choice.

I allowed myself to eat whatever I wanted, in moderation.  My best friend and I would split a meal and an appetizer.  The alcohol was what was hard for me, as it is empty calories that are non-filling and many icy fruity high calorie drinks.  :)

Have fun...  within reason.
Even Richard Simmons says that Calories don't count on birthdays holidays or vacations.
Let your hair down a few times, but be prepared to pull back the reigns when your vacation is over.

Sometimes, I don't think that it is the actual eating that troubles us, but the floodgate that opens to let yourself continue to eat without reason upon return.

Moderate restraint....  :)
Good luck,
Kathy

Food breaks down in your mouth, mastication, enzymes in your saliva.  You cannot chew and spit out without swalling some of the food.  It is an unhealthy practice.  It is not the correct way to be a healthy person.

Almost everything can be enjoyed in moderation or strict moderation.  If you have the self-will and self-control to chew up a handful of chips and spit them out, then you can use that same self-will and self-control to eat a moderated portion of them.

Would you do this on a date with a good looking guy?  Would you do this at a resturant?  If not why not?  If it is something that you would be ashamed to do in public, then don't do it.

It is silly anyway, as you are chewing, thus still consuming calories as the enzymes in your saliva already begin the digestion process.

Eat normal, healthy, meals allowing yourself one serving of chips or something once and awhile.

Edamame packs some calories!  I did not realize so many!

I read in Nutrition Magazine yesterday that to build muscle in strength training, you should eat 1l2 your weight in protein per day!  DO YOU BELIEVE THAT?  SO, for a 236 pound person, for instnace, to build muscle in weight lifting, you should eat 118 grams of protein per day?!?!!?

That seems way excessive.

You guys all totally rock, by the way!

You are all correct.

Yes, I can eat out, and make better choices.

And, I LOVE MY half and half in my coffee in the AM.  And, I LOVE MY COFFEE.  It is my vice that I must have.  The brownie I could have definately skipped.  The devil made me do it.

OK, so I am having a big plate of fruit for supper and some celery and carrots, with my cucumber dill veggie dip.

I'll be happy with 20-25 pounds off, but I sure would like 30 off by our 9 weeks!!!  :)

Back to positive healthy forward thinking thought processing.

OK dog gone it...

I thought I had the heart rate thing figured out with the 220 - age figure, and now I read this post.

The other thing to consider is that resting heart rates can differ at different times of the day....

So, what the.......   I thought that I have been doing a great job working out on the elliptical even doing some cross-training warming up 15 on the treadmill heart rate in the 135's to 140's and then kicking my own bahookie for 15 more minutes on this cybex thing, like running up hill, into the 160's, then 15 minutes on the lifefitness elliptical for 150's, and then Precor for 15 more in the 140's to 150's.

My heart rate monitor Polar says that I am burning about 700 (a bit more) per work out and it considers my age, gender, weight, height, and heart rate from start to finish.

What say ye?
This is all too difficult to figure out.

I ended up doing a stir fry with fresh garlic, chicken boob, zuccini, asparagus, red bell peppers, orange bell peppers, and scallions.  I will try both of the other ideas too, next time!
Thanks!!

PS  I also split open a loaf of Ciabatta bread put thin garlic slices on that with some mozzerella cheese and put it in the oven.  (Too much calories with this though, and it tastes SO GOOD)

Weight Loss yikes how do i control myself? Mar 28 2007
20:10 (UTC)
Unknown,

"I dono why this is happening to me"

Sometimes, when I am in a mode that seems like self-pity; it helps to remind myself that I am not a victim.  I am not a victim of myself or anybody else.  I am not a victim of food.

I am the result of my choices.

Eat healthy.  Sign up for calorie-count.  Exercise.  15 pounds is not that much.  Some of us have over 100 pounds to lose.  Get out of a cycle of binge, starve, binge, starve, guilt.  That is borderline eating disorder.

Eat Fruit, Veggies, Lean Meats and proteins, and whole grains.

Keep your chin up.

Nothing is happening to you.  You make it happen kiddo.

Great question!
I have been doing the elliptical machine first 30 minutes on Monday Wednesday and Fridays and then doing arms legs back and abs on those days too.  Then, Tuesday Thursday and Saturday or Sunday 1 hour of cardio.

I don't know if there is a big difference metabolically or not to do lifting first and then cardio, or cardio first and then lifting.
