I completely understand what you're saying but having the body type (as a woman) that so easily builds muscle, I have to be careful with the amount of weight I use. I usually stick with 3-4 sets of 10-12 reps with a weight that will give a good burn after the set is complete (after 10-12 reps). I agree that the 2lb-fast-weightlifting thing is not going to do anyone any good, but weights that are too heavy aren't good either. The best way to tone is slow and steady. Pick a weight that you can feel the muscle working as you slowly move the weight up and down (or whichever direction you're going). |

| Foods | Holy Sodium! | Jan 07 2009 21:33 (UTC) |

One of the things I've noticed is that there is a LOT of sodium in 1 serving of salsa or pasta sauce. If you look on the label, you can find the ones that have the least sodium, sometimes as much as half as much as other brands. I found that ChiChi's salsa is pretty low (comparably) and Francesco Rinaldi pasta sauces are also much lower. If you are in a hurry, try a tuna sandwich instead. If you use a whole can of tuna (drained) it will be just over 300mg sodium. Starkist (fresh tuna packets) even makes a low sodium tuna packet. Or you could even cut up a chicken patty (also 300mg sodium) and put it in a wrap. You could also try making a pork roast the night before and then slicing it for sandwiches. And watch out for salt in condiments and especially pickles. You should also watch out for soups too. Some canned soup Brands are coming out with low sodium variations so you could look for those in the supermarket too. |

| I thought about strength training, but I have a body type that builds muscle really fast. I am afraid to lift weights because my legs could look even more bulky! I used to do very mild strength training on my arms and I gained a lot of muscle so I stopped.
Maybe I do need to step up my running more. A mild mess up really does set me back and it's really annoying that I work so hard and one day could throw me right back up to 135. |

| hey daisyg - I do the same thing. Have been running the treadmill for about 8 months now. I am pretty comfortable with it - gives me a place to run when around here it is hard to find a place outdoors that isnt full of traffic. There is a park down the road, but being a girl addicted to her iPod, I have a fear of running alone outside...
BUT - I made a commitment this year to do a 5K a month and I ran a 5K 2 weeks ago in the cold and it wasn't so bad... and I've been running more & more outside and I can see how people get addicted to it. I think the more I run, the more I want to run and the more I will want to run outdoors in the future. If you like the treadmill, stick with it for now. I would encourage you to try some 5K road races, your pace isn't that bad at all! It is very rewarding too! |

| Foods | chinese food | Dec 05 2006 01:41 (UTC) |

| I have stopped going to chinese buffets and stopped getting chinese takeout. I ordered it once and tried to log everything I ate and it was horrifying. I had eaten in one sitting enough calories for about 1.5 - 2 days! Not to mention, I think the MSG makes me feel sick to my stomach afterwards (full and tired).
I have a hard time saying no to anything at the buffet table, so I stay away. I suppose that if I had to go, I would try eating some soup first to fill me up a little (knowing that there's probably a day's worth of salt in it) then stay clear of the fried stuff. Comparably, terryaki chicken or beef and steamed veggies can't be as bad for you. Maybe on the day you go, log what you think you will eat to get an idea of the calories you will have to work off... |

| wow.
I was about to post almost the same thing and saw this thread. I have been eating really well lately and exercising regularly and I am frustrated because the scale doesn''t budge - and it's actually gone up 2 lbs. I couldn't see how it was possible to gain weight when I was doing all this hard work then I realized my period is probably throwing it off.... |

| Weight Loss | lower belly fat problem | Dec 04 2006 04:00 (UTC) |
|
| I have some advice! When I do stomach crunches, I keep my legs on the floor bent at about 120 degrees - more stretched out than most sit-up positions. This works your LOWER abs more than any other position I've tried. You could even try stretching your legs out straight - flat on the floor! As far as side crunches go, there are lots of things you can do. I have seen people use the gym ball - sit on the ball and lean back slightly and hold a medicine ball in your hands. Move the medicine ball back and forth across your body to your sides. The twisting motion and weight of the medicine ball works side abs great. If you want nice abs, you really should do an ab workout every day. As far as the lipo goes, I would be careful. Have you tried daily ab workouts yet? I heard you are born with only a definate amount of fat cells in your body and when you get lipo, you remove the full fat cells, but there are more that aren't full that can fill up and make you look the same or worse years later. |

| Weight Loss | Question about Fluctuating Weight on Scales | Dec 04 2006 03:53 (UTC) |

| Test your scale.
Buy some weights. Or weigh an object of known weight. Put it on the scale each day before you weigh yourself. If it isn't the same, your scale is messed up. A 7 pound difference seems a little extreme after taking a nap... unless you sleepwalk to your fridge! |

| You are all right.
I guess I was looking for someone to tell me a secret way of getting rid of the bulk. ***blah, silly moment!*** But you are right. I should embrace the muscle and work to tone it if I want to make the best of it. |

| Weight Loss | what to eat | Dec 02 2006 19:07 (UTC) |
|
| I would check the restaurant's website first. Usually if they don't post the nutrition info, it means the food is terrible for you. I eat out often and find the following things as good rules, although it doesn't mean you are eating the best thing in the world, it can stop your calories from getting out of control: Any grilled or broiled meat is best If it comes with sauce, ask for it on the side or not at all If it is a sandwich, ask if they can substitute a multi-grain bread Refrain from french fries, potatoes, and other starches - see if you can substitute steamed veggies or side salad Don't order an appetizer or munch on rolls etc before your meal If you are really unsure, just eat half of it and save the rest for tomorrow! Soup is always a good idea - be sure to drink extra water because it will most likely be full of sodium though. If you are going for fast food, I find Subway or Panera Bread is good. D'Angelo has huge salads, but their subs are not as good for you. |

| Oh I am soooo with you on that one!!! Skirts make me feel calf-conscious! I tried to look online for help but there isn't any real advice for muscular calves... since it is not considered a 'problem area' for most women, they don't really suggest anything for it. | |||

| The Lounge | What's your passion? | Oct 18 2006 12:37 (UTC) |

| Wow this thread is absolutely wonderful!! You all have such great passions! I had to think a little about mine but this is what I came up with: Music: I can't go a day without listening to music. I like so many different kinds and it relaxes me on the way to/from work and is great background for home activities! Art: I have always been an artist, drawing painting. I have recently picked up pastels and I LOVE it! I want to enter an art competition next year and I have always dreamed of opening a gallery.... Running: I used to play soccer but I always was frustrated. I discovered running can be so much fun and I can run to improve my own times and make personal goals, which is really cool. I ran my first 2 5Ks this fall and I plan on running 5Ks and more for the rest of my life as long as I can run. It is more rewarding than I ever thought it could be! Deep Thinking: It sounds weird, but it really summarizes so much of my life. I love to journal and I love having deep conversations with people, getting people to talk about subjects that aren't just on the surface of life. I over think and over analyze everything and I would have to say it is a passion of mine. It also has everything to do with why I am a scientist. Finding out the answers to scientific problems and applying them to life is like making a new discovery - I love figuring out the inner workings of a chemical experiment or making predictions on a test, running the test, and finding out why it worked the way it did (yes I am a nerd). |
