Weight Loss What the heck.... why am I GAINING?! Oct 23 2008

Aimlynn,

I just had to respond to your post. I feel your pain darling!

I'm 5'2 and I love to run but I also gain when I exercise. I ran a marathon and gained 10 lbs! If I don't exercise I'm never hungry, but add a regular running/weight lifting regime and my jeans stop fitting and my face is stuck in the frig all day. It totally bugs me. Now I'm sticking to yoga, mediation, and walking.

awll.. your boyfriend sounds sweet! Maybe he doesn't realize how much these "treats" sabotage your healthy mindset. Some guys don't have a clue what it takes to lose weight and eat healthfully~~ so have you tried sitting him down and letting him know specifically your goals and how you are going to obtain them? I even told one guy exactly what I felt, "No, I can't eat that 3 musketeers- I have 400 calories left today!" Also just verbalizing my goal to him helped me stay on track- even if he thought I was silly. But later when I told him that budgeting calories was like budgeting money he understood.

Maybe reassure your boyfriend that if he helps you then you are going to feel happier and *wink* more romantic and close to him as a result! :) good luck - CB

I think what long_run is saying is that reading the ED posts could be a trigger for her since she has had difficulty with the issue in the past. Knowing the content of a post through the subject line is helpful to everyone and I don't think it's an unreasonable request to be sensitive to each other's issues.

Weight Loss Do you *diet* to lose weight Dec 21 2006

I've always had my ways of keeping my weight in check.

First it was high school- 900 calories a day (felt awful) then the cross country team. 91-120lbs- (Mom made me gain weight or I couldn't go to music camp)

then college- smoking, then smoking AND running (what was I thinking?!) ~105-128lbs. I Finally quit the smoking on grad day.

then a stressful marriage- drink a lot and eat as little as possible since food kills the buzz. :*?- no calorie counting at all- 115 lbs

1st year after divorce- only salad all day then a 2 martini happy hour and lite dinner. No excercise or CCing - 105-107 lbs.

Now 2.5 years after divorce - little or no drinking, CCing healthfully, running a marathon next month- feel FANTASTIC ! I weigh 112-115 now- would like to be 107 again but I like the way I look.

I used to think it was an almost shameful, secretive thing to count calories; I never knew anyone else who did it.-- I'm so glad I've found this forum for support! Knowledge is power :). CB

I've heard so much about brining the turkey, I will have to try it next year. After washing the boatload of dishes and the cleaning up, I ALWAYS say "next year someone else will cook!". I've been saying that for over 5 years now...

Ordinarily I'd agree with you but my Mom always made the freakin' best tasting Thanksgiving dinner ever. Nothing out of a can. I mean everything tasted so good. I managed to watch her over the years and picked up a lot of tips. Most of her cooking was pretty healthy too. Once she put the bird in the oven she'd take us all out for a 5-7 mile hike in the woods and so by the time we came back everything would be done and we'd be starving!

My biggest revelation with running fast is about FORM. Keep the pelvis stable, don't hunch over at the waist, engage the core, shorten your stride-keep your feet landing underneath you-- not in front~~relax your legs~~and enjoy the ride! I did these things and took my 10K to 47 min.- My half marathon PR is 1:56. These tips really worked for me!

Hey Kenzi,

Your post took the words out of my mouth. I'm in the same shoes- mileage and the pace too! I'm 111 and I'd love to be my fighting weight again at 105-107 (I'm 5'2) . I didn't have any success with the 1200 calories diet (got crazy hungry and felt like crap) so now I've upped my calories to 1700-1800 and I run about 6 days a week at 3-5 miles. I'm going to see how it goes with this-- you're not alone with your frustration!

Isn't running great? I love it too--and girl-- you need good shoes when you run! This is essential ! Also I recommend a book that changed me and running forever- it's called Chi Running by Danny Dreyer. He talks a lot about good form and covers shoes too.

I feel your pain! Usually I'm hunting for the sweets-- I sometimes can drink a diet soda or some other carbonated beverage and postpone the urge... it's easier when I'm around other people because they distract me. But if I'm working at home it's harder.

Yeah, peer pressure can really blow it and I can understand when you are around a bunch of guys eating "guy food"! My response to the inquistion is to shrug and say "well I'm a little lady..." . For some reason that seems to satisfy most people.

My town has a turkey trot 10K run on Thanksgiving morning. It's really so much fun because everybody is jogging and talking about their turkey in the oven, what kind of pies they made, the stuffing... seems everybody has the same idea to burn off the feast later in the day!

Fitness elliptical versus treadmill/running Nov 07 2006

Hi! You could make your running regime 'feel' like less work. Try taking smaller, quicker strides and resist the temptation to push off with your legs with every stride. Imagine that your legs are very light and that you are picking up your feet instead of pushing them down. Once you can lower your perceived excertion level with good running form, then you can say both the elliptical and the treadmill are equally easy!

I like turkey jerky and salmon jerky is crazy good too-- but alas if you ask a dentist - they will say,'stay away from jerky' that it's bad for the jaw and the teeth to do that much chewing. I have a click in my jaw when I chew so that's why I don't eat the stuff anymore.

oh where do I start!?

Mrs. Butterworth's sugar free syrup - at 35 calories a 1/4 cup and sooo yummy! Try this one with my recipe for low cal pumpkin pancakes( a good samaritan posted that recipe in the archive - thank you!)- top withberries and a dollop of reddi-whip fat free topping (5 cal. for 2 Tbs).

Ok this one is too simple to post-- cinnanmon and splenda sprinkled on breakfast cereal with half an apple chopped in.--- woo-hoo bring on the season! tralala....

Almond breeze unsweetened vanilla non-dairy beverage. This one you can get at Trader Joe's. It has an insane 40 calories a cup(!) and I use it in place of milk in everything.

air popped popcorn, - 0 calorie butter spray, diet A&W rootbeer

alternative pita bread pizzas- an alternative pita (from Western Bagel co. --110 cal.)with steamed spinach , a little feta or fat free mozzerella and parm. cheese and tomato sauce- a perfect whopper of a lunch at around 200 calories-- I tend to eat two of these.....:>~

Thanks for the responses! Ok so today I ran about 11 miles. I'll probably run 5 miles on wednesday and another 6 mile run later in the week. I have a sit down job so that's why I lead a sedentary lifestyle otherwise. I'll check the tools section but if anyone has some specific advice -please help me with your opinions! I really would like to keep my metabolism healthy but not eat too much to gain weight. Thanks!

I can sooo understand your frustration. I'm going through this phase too-- with work, with life- I'm being soooo tough on myself- don't know if that's good or bad. Probably both!

And the hormones-- ohh man can I relate--- this is tough stuff. If hormones are off,.. well --life really sucks!! -- I hope you feel better soon! CB

Oh thank you! All day I was at work and I thought, "oh please I hope someone has responded to my post!"

Oh this depression is so awful -- if I stopped taking the pills 2 days ago, when does the feeling go away? How long does it take?

My thought-- how the heck can anyone depressed have a hope to eat healthfully? All I want to do is get one of those max packs of assorted halloween candies--- the ones with the mini junior mints, milk duds, mary janes, charleston chews,, you know what I'm talking about? I want to punish myself with junk for feeling so bad!

I just got back from the grocery & bought lots of expensive good-for you food., honeydew, butternut squash, english cucumbers, salad mix, paul newman low fat dressing, splenda yogurt, diet whole wheat bread, fat free whipped cream- (even if I spray the whole can in my mouth it's only 200 calories) . I have the night off-- and I got into the comfy clothes and I'm going to withdraw from the world and watch 6 episodes of the LOST on dvd- drink diet soda, eat this healthy food and hope for the best... what a rambler this post is-- thanks so much for listening--- you people are truly the greatest,....

Hey Petite chicks!

I'm 5"2 and about 112 lbs. I live in Southern CA and it seems like the "beauty trend" here is to be tall and long legged. Seems all I hear people tell me is "Oh you're so tiiiinnnnny!" It started to bug me and I'm so sick of going to ANY clothing store and finding absolutely nothing that fits. Well-- I have a suggestion for the petite fashonistas among us- Ann Taylor Loft! That place is the best-- the petite section has very flattering fits- I'm so pleased! Another thing I did was to google "petite women" on the internet. Seems there are lots and lots of men out there that just adore petite women. Ok where are you guuuyys? Last year I splurged and got lipo on my thigh and knee area-- those parts were not proportional to my slim upper body. I am sooo much happier with my shape now-that stubborn fat had to goooo!
